SALIBA STAYS

by .

It didn’t take long for the Arsenal media to fire up into power mode with regards to transfer movement this summer.

Mikel Arteta finally came out and said what I told you months ago.

“William Saliba has to come back. He has the experience to be competitive with us. We sent him to Marseille for his growth”.

“William wanted to be regular starter as you know but now we want him back at Arsenal

Oh my, so many spleens vented, so much projected angst, so many tears on the internet… and in the end, the loan move was about development, now he’s developed. Bill Saliba is coming back to Arsenal to compete as a centre back.

What a madness. I truly cannot believe how mental people went over him this season, hopefully now we can stop talking about the most boring story of 2022.

Next up, The Athletic are talking about the club tracking a left-sided centre back to give cover to Gabriel next season. We really do need to make sure that all the centre backs we have can do the same job. I love Rob Holding, but he limits and changes the way we play. Ben White and Gabriel also need some competition. This job could go to an up and coming centre back from around Europe, or it could go to a gamble, like Umtiti on loan. Bob Holding didn’t break 1000 minutes last season, the reality of a back-up signing is a club like Arsenal has to gamble. Do you find a cheap European option like Tomiyasu (Or Schlotterbeck), but run the risk of them turning out like Tavares… or do you take a gamble on someone with the right experience, but they have fitness challenges.

I don’t have the answer, but I suspect those discussions are going to be on the table this summer. We’re going to lose the experience of Lacazette at the minimum this summer, that will leave Cedric as the only 30+ year old in the side, I think we need to think about that. If you could get Umtiti on a loan for a year, it might not be the worst idea. He’s a World Cup winner and a triple La Liga Champion. David Luiz was many things to Arsenal fans, not always pleasant, but he was a hero to the younger players. Worth noting.

Kieran Tierney is also being linked away from the club, this time, it’s Newcastle weighing a £50m offer. Now, KT is talented player, one of the most powerful at the club, but it’s clear he has struggled with robustness having only played 60% of PL games he’s been available for. If there were an offer on the table, I think Arsenal would entertain it because we could certainly use that money very well based on what we did last summer. I’m just not sure the player seems like the sort to leave? But who knows…

The question then becomes what type of left-back do we want to replace him? KT is a power and pace beast, but he is a little one dimensional at times. Do we want someone that is a little more creative like a Cancelo? What have we learned from this season that we lack?

There was a story doing the rounds that Eddie had been given the #14. I’ve heard that isn’t confirmed, but we have to be real here… a new number is going to be part of the negotiation. I expect Saliba to be given a proper number and if Eddie stays, he’ll wants something symbolic that says he’s important. Also, he should defintely sign a new deal. We’re being linked to some 19 year old Czech player called Hlozek, could be the next Haaland, but we have no idea what he could do in the league. Eddie is a guarantee of goals and we know he fits into the squad and playing style we’re looking at.

The Brazilian media is double keen to insist that Gabriel Jesus is the main striker this season on the striker front. That might be true, but remember, the media gets played by clubs. It works for Arsenal to have lots of noise in the papers because it can distract and also shake out clubs looking to shift their wares. Charles Watts is saying Victor Oshimen’s agent was in London last week. For me, this is the sort of profile of player we’ll be looking at ahead of Gabriel Jesus. If you have the choice of a player that has it all, why would you opt for one that doesn’t have it all? We need a tall striker that can dominate the box, run the lines, and occupy defenders all game long. Jesus is a luxury option for me. A top player, no doubt, but a luxury option without a history of top finishing.

Ok, we’re going to do a podcast tomorrow, so stay tuned for that, Johnny might have a little cry about how happy he is about Bill Saliba. In the meantime, check out the latest NON-written content.

“ I truly cannot believe how mental people went over him this season, hopefully now we can stop talking about the most boring story of 2022.”

Curious if Arteta has actually told Salina of the clubs plans, or does Salina find out through the media? This much is known, Saliba is a far better defender than both Gabriel and White. Let’s hope Arteta does not squander this opportunity as he has with Eddie.

Ernest Reed

Saliba…damn this auto-fill.

Steveyg87

Still plenty of rumblings around Tammy Abraham, I remain hopeful

Killroy-TM

Whether Saliba will play for us is not a final deal. James McNicholas said on the Arsblog podcast he doesn’t think he will] play for us. There is the small master of CL games which means more bonus money for the player vs EL games and the competition from elite clubs for his signature. He has to sign a contract first, then you can repeat your jubilant post but at this time it is pure hopeful wishful thinking nothing more.

The painful truth for all the Arteta lovers out there is that in the 2 most important games of his tenure, he was gapped by 2 better managers: vs Emery’s Villarreal vs Conte’s Spuds No arguments needed. He lost both games. First one with Xhaka as LB and ESR as false 9. Second one, with high line Holding and RB Cedric vs Son with Tomi on LB. Galaxy brain lost both games for us with his idiotic ideas. I’m aware that it isn’t exact science if a manager will be a success for a given club or not, but the… Read more »

Or we could be looking at a LS CB because Gabriel is off. Plenty of links to Juve.

By the way Xhaka will be 30 in September so if that’s important (and I’m not sure that it is) then that ‘experience’ will still be there. Cedric isn’t a good example to use, being a liability and all that.

Hopefully we will get our striker and CM ducks in a row first before we more on a CB. I’d rather have Tammy than Osimhen (not Oshimen btw).

For what it’s worth, and I expect not much, the “Hard Tackle” claim Arsenal have slapped a €30m price tag on Saliba. If so, it would continue Arsenal’s current trend of buying high and selling low.

Killroy-TM

Pedro
Don’t know if you only read what fits into your Saliba narrative only fair than to quote what others say about his possible return.

“According to L’Equipe, Arsenal are willing to sell William Saliba for €30 million in the summer transfer window.”

Doesn’t fit your hoping and wishing, does it. Saliba will demand a starting position and since MA doesn’t rate him he he more likely will move on in the summer TW.

raptora

On Saliba – the player is being cautious on whether he will play games at Arsenal, or he’ll be rooted to the bench similar to Holding. I don’t think that Arteta will bench White – it’s his buy, he went to war and made the club pay premium price for him. If he slots in Saliba in Whites place, he’s basically admitting that he wasted 50m pounds in a similar way to City with spending on their Ake’s and co. The more expected action will be to have Gabriel and Saliba fight it out for a starting place. Now, I… Read more »

Clear the decks for Bellerin et al.

Keep Saliba (new contract). Add James Ward-Prowse (30M?), Neves (30M?) and Martinez (free plus signing bonus). Tammy as well if we can afford him (60M?) or less with a swap for Xhaka. Then the gap to Liverpool and Cite would considerably narrow and we’d have all the X-factor we’d need.

NJ Gooner

Just a thought on Saliba starting: White to occasion to right back or defensive midfield, Tomi to left and Saliba at centre-half to ensure some game time for Saliba.

That might be the thinking – with the addition of Hickey (spelling?) if KT does go for a big fee.

Killroy-TM

The moving on of those on loan is going to be difficult. Torrera, Bellerive & AMN don’t want to play for Arsenal anymore but the clubs that want them can’t afford the asking price and the clubs that can afford them don’t want them. A typical scenario where we will lose money or keep deadwood.

Brian Muff

I’m just wondering what happens if Saliba gets benched and gets a gob on. Squad harmony and all that.

As for a valuation of €30m after paying out £27m for him before he developed the profile he now has, that has to be a joke. If it’s true does this club not learn a fucking thing about the value of its assets?

Naija+soccer

“William wanted to be regular starter as you all know, but now we want him back at Arsenal”.

Hmmm interesting statement. I get the feeling that we are gonna need more than “Now we want him back at Arsenal” to make him stay.

Mr Serge

Well of course be bloody stays all the Doom and gloom around him has been ridiculous

Naija+soccer

Our links to a left Centerback better be because we are maybe considering selling Gabriel to Juve. The last thing we need this summer is another fucking centerback.

Vintage Gun

I conclude nothing definitive from Arteta’s Saliba quotes personally. It’s not as if Arteta is going to say ” I still don’t want him here” is he? Saliba said he’d prefer to stay in Marseille which i believe, and Arteta wants him to return which i also believe. What’s intriguing is the fact that Arteta’s special power is that Saliba in still under contract so will HAVE to return, Saliba’s special power is that he only has 2 years left on his contract and if he refuses to extend we will be in the “sell now” territory or risk losing… Read more »

Mr Serge

Pedro I heard Saliba has the number 2 shirt for next season

IAT-Robbie

NJ Gooner,

I would like to see Ben White tried in CDM (if Saliba is ever to play for AFC) next season. While I think he is yet to even justify his transfer fee, FBRef does have him as a good progressor and dribbler of the ball. These are attributes we’ve witnessed in his games and I think they could be useful in front of the defence, in partnership with Partey.

Mr Serge

We would really sell saliba for what we bought him for ? Come on now please what waffle

IAT-Robbie

“it’ll be a dark day as we can’t afford to rip through managers like other clubs can…not to mention it lack class.”

To be fair, Brian, with the way we’ve ripped through players under Arteta, I wouldn’t be worried about us lacking class anymore. That notion is as wishful as the Tooth Fairy.

Mr Serge

We the saliba ultras will revolt

LoveSausage

I don’t think anyone doubted that Arteta wanted to bring Big Willy back for next season. The doubt is whether he wants to come back. He’s been called up to the French national team. With WC approaching fast, he might not want to take the risk of ending up in Arteta’s freezer. We’ll see I guess. I certainly hope he’ll give Arsenal a shot, especially since it shouldn’t be too difficult for him to push White to the bench.

Leftside

Newcastle for KT? They can well and truly eff off. They played us last Monday like it was a CL final and put the final nail in our coffin as far as CL was concerned. If they want any of our players we need to quote extortionate fees.

Jonko

Nkiteah being our main striker next season after being linked to Vlahovic would probably be the most depressing moment in the history of this club. How have fans accepted such a mediocre passive striker just because he had a few good weeka. Baffling. It’s like some Arsenal fans are under some cult like spell.

NJ Gooner

IAT. I agree. My point is that there are several ways in which MA could slot Saliba in for plenty of game time. MA (like Pep) favors players who have lots of utility. White can play an inverted full back position, a defensive midfielder or CH. Saliba can definitely play CH or RB. Tomi can play either full back position. So, offering Saliba a contract extension, a low squad number to reflect his importance and an assurance of game time shouldn’t be a problem. Hickey can reputedly play well with either foot. So, can you imagine not having nightmares if… Read more »

Let’s hope Saliba is as good as we’ve been told.

I think it more likely Arteta will keep Tierney and bring in a quality back-up. If all goes according to plan Arteta will have the numbers to rotate players next season without lowering the quality.

Dissenter,

Yeah, that’s always a risk with Arteta – he only gives players a chance when his hand is forced. And I’m sure Big Willy is well aware of that. Hi n the flip side, the sheer increase in number of games might force him to rethink the way he does things. If he sticks with his current approach, he’ll break players.

Habesha Gooner

We don’t need another fucking CB. Arteta tried that with a left footer in Mari. And it didn’t work out. He has already signed 3 CBs and gave Holding a new deal. Now we have to keep Saliba and rotate those three defenders regularly to keep them fit. Holding can play in early group stage matches of the Europa league and a the cups. As for Tierney, we can’t sell him. This won’t be about money. It would be about statement. Newcastle would be trying to send a message. If we accept now for 50 mil then they will come… Read more »

The club has work to do in tying down to long term deals Saliba and Saka, to name just two.

Perhaps all the noise about Gabriel in the media has some truth to it, and Saliba will be the one to step in. I’m that case we would need another centre back as we’d have Saliba, White and Holding.

Not going to lie, if we were to receive a £50 million + offer for Gabriel, I’d be considering if.

I think a lot of people forget the attacking presence Tierney was giving us not so long ago. He is very capable going forward, as has been shown in the past by his ability to get forward and provide cut backs a la Robertson, and his goal at West Brom.

His fitness is obviously a concern but if he is rotated when needed with the lad coming in from Bologna hopefully that may help him keep healthy. Hs to be said although he may be brittle he has had rotten luck with some of the injuries.

Chrispy,

No one is “a part of the problem” for enjoying a game. I’m not sold on Arteta but I’d certainly enjoy myself at the Emirates. As an overseas fan, I haven’t been able to go for a while. My last game was a home defeat to United during the Emery days. The fans were absolutely shameful. Whatever other faults he has, I definitely give Arteta kudos for the atmosphere. And any normal person should be able to enjoy a game and support the team regardless of how they feel about the manager.

Dream10

Newcastle want Tierney for 50m?
Take the money and run like Usain Bolt.
He is injury prone and is a player whose reputation is greater than his ability. A 7/10 player is billed as a 9/10 player. Drive him to the airport ASAP

Greg

I don’t get the hate for Nuno and do t agree with writing him off so soon. Clearly not the finished product, but he’s 20, incredibly athletic, was really good while Tierney was out the 1st time. Sat on the bench while Arteta overplayed Tierney and lost his mojo. Have a bit of patience.

Since Arteta joined, Saliba’s development has been an afterthought of Mikel’s. His (initially botched) loan wasn’t even treated seriously for a player that cost £27m . When we had an injury crisis in 20-21, Saliba still wasn’t registered in any competitions, despite being fit. Instead, we played Kolasinac, Xhaka and Elneny at CB. For the 50 million please sell Tierney. One great replacement for him is David Raum. Great defender and better attacker. No nonsense gritty defender that will give nightmares to attackers on the left. He has shades of Martenelli in his determination.

In the midfield we need a player who plays like Rodri of Mancity or Fabinho of Liverpool. Arsenal are currently weak in aerial duels in the midfield. A perfect player would be Monaco’s Tchouameni. A cheap alternative is Bordeaux Jean Obama who is tall athletic and a great tackler and carrier of the ball deadly in maintaining and stealing the ball and a tool in turnovers in the midfield.

Are there not other blogs out there that strike a more pessimistic, concerned chord, for your liking, you howling banshee??(Vieira,/Karen)

Milo, do you ever bring something football-related to the conversation or are you just the functionally equivalent of the old man on the porch waving his fists? how terribly sad

I do hope people realise Saliba is still contracted to AFC and it is not really his decision what happens next ?. None of us here know what has gone on between him and Arteta so I will say we all need to chill and stop “using paracetamol for another man’s head ache”. On a different note, signing Osihmen will be a great mistake, he is so over rated and not all that too be honest. There is a social media post he made recently which tells me he is unfocused and being from his neck of his wood and… Read more »

Why are you so rumbled??

What exactly would you even want to hear from someone who you just said should be institutionalized?? Lol.

What could I possibly have to offer, oh sage one??

To be quite honest I am afraid that we will not get our required reinforcements for several reasons. 1. There are not the quality strikers we crave to have at the club for a reasonable price. The elite striker that we have been promised may not be available. AFC contacted Napoli, however DeLaurentis is a very difficult person to deal with and he is holding out for 110mill euros for Osimhen. 2. United and Newcastle are bidding for the same talent we are in search of. 3. There are 3 teams that will fight for 4th place assuming Pool, City… Read more »

@Tai “I do hope people realise Saliba is still contracted to AFC and it is not really his decision what happens next ?” That is correct he has 1 year left with an extension of a 2nd year. However after the Sanchez and Ozil debacle Arsenal set policies in motion that when a player has two years left he needs to sign an extension or new contract. Therefore starting this summer before he plays he has to sign on the dotted line. But all the negotiation power is with him and his agent, Arsenal has no leverage when it comes… Read more »

Milo, please keep in mind who first went out of their way to enter the fray without any provocation…so I guess a simple apology would suffice(lol)…I get it though, you went out for a little evening troll and things took a little turn that you didn’t expect…it is what it is…now that I know your gig, I’ll react in a much different manner next time around…happy hunting

Terraloon

Morning all

Anything happen on here when I was in my pit ?

Oh morning Nigel been eating that red meat again ?

What did appear to have happened that Chelsea’s sell now been approved and a chunk of wedge will now be spent by the incomings !

Tai

It actually is. He can give notice and cancel his contract and sign for other clubs . Yep there would be compensation but no transfer fee

Mr Serge

Terraloon if he did that with his contract there would be pandemonium in football that’s never gonna happen

Let’s see what happens with him when he comes back in 3 weeks

It’s allowed under Article 17 of FIFA rules( and has happened. It’s know as a Webster . Ok there hasn’t been that many published incidents but the threat of its use is far more powerful when it comes to the player either wanting a bigger contract or forcing the club to agree a transfer

Think about this for one second and I guarantee it will shock.you.
How many of the current Arsenal squad are 100% happy and trust in the Arteta process?
Look at their body language and you’ll soon get the answer to this question.
There’s only one player in our squad who’s pretending to show commitment to the cause and that’s Mr Xhaka.
The trouble is Arteta doesn’t see any of this.
