KING EDDIE LEADS CHELSEA SPANKING

by .

‘I was SO wrong about Eddie’

Mikel Arteta holding his hands up after the young English striker showed the whole Premier League their ‘League 1 Eddie’ banter was a total nonsense.

Arsenal went to Stamford Bridge after 3 losses on the bounce and scored 4 goals. Everything I said in the build-up to the game still stands.

We have the youngest team in the league.

We were missing 4 first-team players.

We apparently don’t have a recognized striker.

Our manager is apparently so bad, he should be fired, or not get a new deal this summer.

Yet here we are with 6 games to go:

5th, level points with Spurs, after smashing the European Champions in their own backyard.

Let’s get the difficult conversation out the way first. What is the biggest lesson Mikel Arteta has learned over the last 4 games?

Squad rotation.

We didn’t need Vlahovic in January. We didn’t need Arthur. We needed to give our squad players more minutes through the season. Mikel Arteta has learned all the tools he needed to make top 4 this season were within his grasp if he’d just shared around the minutes. Now, there might have been draws where there were wins, there might have been losses where there were draws, but over the course of the season, if we’d have rotated, we’d have had our best players available for longer, and we’d have had our squad players ready when injuries happened.

Arteta had no choice but to lean into his squad for this game. But he didn’t lean into the obvious places. There’s been a weird notion in the fanbase that he doesn’t have a plan b, when the reality is Arteta is one of the most tactically astute managers in the league. Yesterday, he proved it, with a beaten-up squad against the Kings of Europe. He went 3 at the back adding holding to the mixer, he had Taveres on the left, Saka as a right wing-back, he put Big Mo next to Odegaard and Xhaka, then let Eddie and ESR run the show up-top.

People were whining pre-game, but what choice did Arteta have? What he was doing wasn’t working, and Chelsea are destroyers.

The formation was perfect, it disrupted Tuchel’s game plan, and it gave life to an Arsenal team that was struggling. I won’t lie, we were very messy at the back early on, the nerves were on show for everyone to see. Inexperience is a weakness, most of our players aren’t Premier League hardened, none of them are seasoned winners, and against Chelsea, it showed.

What we did have was attacking cohesion. Eddie has power and pace. He worked like a Jack Terrier, he never stopped, and he opened the scoring capitalising on an errant backpass, he broke free of Sarr and buried a low shot past Mendy. The finish was sublime, Lacazette couldn’t have scored the goal, it blew the roof off the away section.

League One Eddie? Get out of my life with that bullshit. EDDIE IS A KING.

The second goal was dim from Eddie. Arsenal were trying to break the press, he one touch passed when he should have collapsed over the ball, Chelsea then summoned all their lucky charms as Timo Werner squeezed a flukey goal from a deflection. Would Ramsdale of September have saved it? Maybe.

Our second goal was the good, the bad, and the ugly. Our playout the back consisted of Ben White nearly giving the ball away, Mo Elneny nearly breaking a leg with a wild slide tackle, Bob Holding nearly gifting possession >>> Followed by Granit nutmegging then releasing Odegaard, who fed Saka, who found the return for Odegaard, who found ESR, who SLID HOME A PERFECT SHOT INTO THE BOTTOM CORNER.

Mr Boring Odegaard has created the most chances in the Premier League since November. Quite something for a team that has no attacking capabilities.

Emile Smith Rowe, who earned his debut against Chelsea, is now a record scorer like Rooney for his age class.

Chelsea found their way back in, Ben White was fouled, Moss let it go because he’s a disgusting incapable ref, Tavares didn’t track a run, we conceded again.

I don’t mean to mean about overweight older people (I am one), but honestly, Moss is overweight, old, and he is a terrible ref. How can someone in that condition be chasing 21-year-olds around the pitch?

The second half could have gone either way, but Eddie wanted to be the difference-maker to make sure the Le Grove agenda was kept intact. He pivoted on a Tavares cross, made it into the area, lost it, then poked home a loose ball.

I LOST MY MIND BEFORE SETTLING INTO A HELLISH FINAL 35.

We locked shit down. We fought like crazy. Everyone put in a shift.

Before we get onto Arsenal, I hope the fans that spent all week calling Arteta a fraud know that Thomas Tuchel is the first manager in 28 years to lose 3 home games in row. Did you see him blame the pitch after? Stunning stuff, honestly, NSFW content.

Now let’s get back to The Arsenal.

That was a real deal performance against the Kings of Europe.

That was a tactical masterclass from one of the best young managers in world football.

That was a statement of intent from our inexperienced players that should tell you this: We are on the right path regardless of how this season goes.

The average age of our squad is 23 – YOUNG PLAYERS GET BETTER

We don’t have enough cover in midfield – WE WILL ADD TWO MIDFEILDERS TO COMPETE WITH PARTEY THIS SUMMER

We don’t have our elite striker – EDDIE WILL SIGN WITH US AND WE WILL GO BIG ON A PROPER PLAYER

Our manager will get wiser and sharper – HE WILL ROTATE PROPERLY, SALIBA IS STAYING NEXT SEASON, ARTETA WILL BE NICER

Everything is going to get better.

Online fans need to take a leaf out of the IRL fan playbook. Be better. Stop catastrophizing. Take in the bigger picture.

Arsenal will compete for the title in 2 years time, we are in it for the long game, if we recruit well this summer, we will be infinitely better next season.

Top 4, regardless of that result, is still a stretch goal, and Spurs are still big favorites. Success for me right now is making that Spurs game a cup final.

Beating Chelsea is going to make United double take this weekend. It’s going to make Spurs late game a little bit tougher against an in-form Brentford. West Ham might not fancy getting run around by Arsenal because they are trying to do things in the Europa League.

This win could potentially be a big, big moment for us… but we have to take it one game at a time. We have to accept that the Premier League has many twists and turns to come. But at the very least, it looks like it’ll be competitive.

That’s all I wanted this season, a competitive run at top 4, we’re there, no one expected it, so let’s enjoy the run, and be really fucking noisy this weekend.

… but just before I go. We spoke about culture this week. A lot of people wrongly thought the culture workshop at Arsenal was driven by sporting issues. Wrong. If you had any doubt about the culture on the sporting side, just look at how Big Mo, Eddie, and Holding played. Those types of players 6 years ago would have mailed it in, but they didn’t, they care about the team, they care about the project, they delivered when they could have been dreaming about Barbados. That’s what a proper culture gets you.

P.S. OUR AWAY FANS WERE FUCKING IMMENSE! Home fans, what you got this Saturday?

It’s also good that everyone is calling out Pedro. It’s beyond ludicrous at this point. Trying to Marshall everyone to toe the “Arteta is god” line just won’t work. And it doesn’t mean we are shitting on the club. For more than 8 years you were vividly Wenger out. No one questioned your love for Arsenal. Readers like me saw an online platform where I could vent and really say what I felt cos going to the pubs to do that would get you a broken head from the Wenger loyalists. A wounded animal is still a dangerous animal
United will still create chances against us. We are not Liverpool.
These early kick off also.

Quietly nervous about this fixture although United are shite they always seem to raise their game against us. We will need to score first in this game.

“Pedro-please tell me where I was on here shitting on the club? It’s really a repulsive line of insults you are taking here but your blog, your rules as all the people you’ve binned can attest to.”

Bacaryisgod please let Pedro be. This is his blog and he is “usually right” according to him. I enjoy the blog especially the diverse opinions of Arsenal supporters.

“Pedro does this mean you were in the ground singing in Arsene we trust but on here spouting shite about him like a true ‘online supporter’” Yeah. Hard to say anything against that when Pedro was at the spearhead of 2 Arsenal managers getting sacked, he was actively asking for people to raise banners at the stadium, not go to the games, have protests before the games. Now the fans that don’t support Arteta are branded “online fans”, the bad chunk of the fanbase, the people that don’t support their club , an embarrassment and much worse than the stadium… Read more »

Already moved on. Now just one day before United so that’s all I want to spend my Arsenal energy on. United will be more rested but we have the momentum.

“Page upon page of misery”

Yup, ironically half of it is people being miserable in complaining about how miserable the other half are….

Pot, kettle, black as they say.

andy1886

Please no excuses for United already, they really are rubbish. We should take three points if we put in a half decent performance.

Midfield is key, in the reverse fixture we were bullied by a United MF of Fred and McTominay which was pretty shocking given how terribly average that combo is.

Let’s hope that they’ve already thrown in the towel on this season and on Ralf.

Northbanker

When you go to the game one key factor in watching is that you don’t get the benefit of action replays that are easily visible and repeatable ( and none at all for controversies) and you don’t get the commentators and pundits slant

So you watch the game ‘raw’

My take the other night was that Arsenal did play a flat back four and Ben White was most certainly playing RB. I also didn’t get any sense of Saka being a RWB although of course he had to track back and the distinction can often be a fine one

Emiratesstroller

Yesterday I had a long chat with a friend who is a sports journalist and follows closely what goes on at Arsenal. We discussed recent events specifically the January transfer window recent performances and results. Both of us agreed that there were mistakes made in the January window in allowing six players to leave without replacement and leaving us so exposed to having only 18 outfield players on books. His view was that this was an “Edu” decision. We moved on then to the Aubameyang saga. On this matter he believed that the decision was taken above Arteta, but that… Read more »

Here we go again now Manchester United are easy. There are no easy games in the Premier League, especially a team that has the individual talent they have. On top of that they have had so much thrown at them, they will certainly be up for it.

Northbanker

My caveat to my comment above is that I have no idea what Tavares was supposed to be doing and you could easily put forward an argument that he was a LWB but probably because he was out of position

ES – I’m sure most of us would agree with most of that I’d keep Nketiah as he has now demonstrated he can press and create a threat albeit it has taken this last game to see it and he has done little as sub previously We need one CF and 2 CMs. I don’t think we need any more than that . Three great signings would put us as serious contenders next year . Apparently the worst kept secret on Merseyside is that Dominic Calvert lewin is a done deal !
Very disappointing if true , if that’s all they can find with all the time they’ve had to find a top striker .

Le grove is a funny place. If Eddie has a bad game tomorrow no one would be saying let’s keep him loool.

Let’s be clear, Emery was fired primarily because of failure to communicate with the players. They showed lack of respect for him. I was one who wanted him to have a fair crack of the whip. He inherited the mess Wenger left made worse by some awful transfer deals for which he was blameless. For me the man for the job was Arteta for reasons given so often that I won’t repeat them. As for Pedro, to accuse him of prejudice is utter nonsense. But some of the anti-arteta brigade are prejudiced, and to an excessive degree. They blame everything… Read more »

Northbanker I don’t see Arsenal recruiting more than one midfielder in this summer’s transfer window. DEFENSIVE/CENTRAL MIDFIELDER Arsenal need an experienced player to rotate with Partey and Xhaka. I would look for someone slightly more creative than these two. However, the club will have also on books Lokonga and as I posted there are a number of younger players in U23s who need also a pathway to first team squad in next 12 months. ATTACKING/WIDE MIDFIELD We have got Odegaard, Smith-Rowe and Saka playing in those positions and by all accounts the next big thing coming through system is Hutchinson… Read more »

Emiratesstroller

I don’t see Arsenal offloading Xhaka this summer. I think that Arsenal will want to keep
2 experienced players in the engine room. Arteta changed slightly the role of Xhaka and
the partnership with Partey worked well.

I agree with viewpoint that we need upgrade, but if we qualify for Europe then we will need
certainly three players to rotate. Xhaka is most definitely good enough to play in Europe.

Samesone

I think my real concern is that there is a dearth of decent strikers

There’s plenty strikers out there whether they are affordable is another argument.

Its funny how things change from game to game. After the Brighton game, I was angry and pointed out to fatigue being a key factor in us losing. Most players had on bandages around their legs and body and were clearly looking to be in the red zone. Then we have the game against Chelsea and everyone is back to being fresh and motivated. Being a school level footballer, I know that feeling all too well. It mostly depends on the squad and the opposition we face. Andy1886 “Please no excuses for United already, they really are rubbish.” This is the premier league there are no easy games. They have done the double over Spuds and have lost fewer games than any of their top 4 rivals. Probably owed more to the fact Ronaldo digs them out of holes tbf. Agree that we should keep Eddie and sign a top class striker. I would also say give Laca a 1 year extension to allow the new striker to adapt and give some depth, sending balogun out on another season long loan. 2 CM definitely required, 1 to replace xhaka and one to provide competition and cover. We also have lokonga, big Mo and azeez. Saliba should return and we keep Holding unless the Trusty fellow will replace him. We also have to sign 1 full back who can play on both flanks as cover. This would allow us to challenge… Read more »

No matter how shit United are, they have individual superstars who can punish u if u underestimate them. United is the most important fixture for me as they always seem to know how to beat us when it matters. At least we at home so we have a good chance.

kjelli

Article makes sense, but Arteta will have to eat a lot of humble pie before next season.. Mo Elneny
is worth a mention here he does what he does with the occasional error, but he had a good game
he should be kept if he wants to. We will have AMN next season and they will provide cover
for injuries, fatigue etc.. My only real fear is that we don’t convince Saliba to be with us next season
Guendouzi is also an asset ??

Valentin

No ifs, no but, we should beat ManUtd, not because we are brilliant, but because they are in a worst state than us. Because of injuries they currently don’t have a midfield (no Pogba, No McTominay and potentially no Bruno Fernandes) and because ofbpoor pastcrecruitment their defence is a shamble. Their main CB organiser (Varane) is injured. Varane may be getting old. but he can still organise and guide his CB partner. Maguire is a mediocre, aggressive defender made to look good with a good guide beside him. Without one he lose confidence and the worse trait in him re… Read more »

My belief, based on squad numbers, is that many players will be signed in the summer window. A thin squad will get thinner with likely departures such as Leno, Laca, Eddie, etc. The return of Balogan and Saliba will help, but my guess is a minimum of six newcomers will be needed to complete the squad

andy1886

@AFCF, true but for every win against a very out of form Nuno Spurs side they’ve had an equally poor result against very average sides. Losing 4-1 at Watford for example.

I believe that the reason we do so poorly against them is a mental thing. I can’t see any other explanation, we’ve played them before when they were in awful form and lost for that not to be an issue.

So I say let’s be positive and convince ourselves that we’re going to kick their arses. Then a few beers after the game to celebrate another great win.

Berg10kamp

EB, agree however 6 is too much if u want quality as we won’t have the spending power this is why I say go big on 1 CM and a ST as that’s the dire need. Then sign a few cheap gambles to cover other positions and give depth. Then give youngsters a chance.

Leftside

Ronaldo, Varane and McTominay will be available to face us tomorrow.

Andy

Yep that is true. I never play into the playbook of easy games because I’m too long in the tooth. There are really tough games against the best like City, Liverpool but generally the Premier League has no easy games. It’s why gambling firms sponsor so much football, they know football fans are mugs with predictions. If we are on it and have finally found our shooting boots, then we should be too much fr them. Have to keep Ronaldo quiet, he is the ultimate big game player!!

englandsbest

Berg10kamp

Yep, that’s the way the window will go. Spend BIG on a goalscorer, medium big on a midfielder. The American GK will replace Leno. I imagine most of the deals are pretty much set up by Edu.

Samesong

Please no excuses for United already, they really are rubbish. We should take three points if we put in a half decent performance.

It’s United still. This game they are coming in as the underdogs so we can’t go into this game lax and with the same attitude that we just beat Chelsea and we have done our job. I hope I am wrong but we need to start this game fast and with an early goal. Ronaldo still poses a big threat if he plays.

The Bard

Untd will be a tough game. Many of the players will be playing for their Untd careers with the new manager looking on. They are shite but will put in a shift.

salparadisenyc

If its this miserable on here after beating Chelsea, can’t wait to report back after hopefully dusting Spurs.

Nigel Tufnel

A couple of negatives. Chelsea was playing for absolutely nothing, and it showed, even from Tuchel.

Saka penalty, if Mendy guesses correctly, he probably saves it.

Still happy about the win, but have to be honest.

Emiratesstroller

Arsenal may bring in 6+ players this summer, but I would expect that will include Saliba
and possibly Balogun as well.

Also I expect Arsenal to promote at least one player from the Academy to beef up numbers
as well as meet home grown quota assuming that the player is registered.

The trend has been over last three to four years to promote at least one or two players annually.

Tom

Because if it was……….. consider the irony lol.

None of the current academy players is even remotely ready to play in the premier league. Either physically not ready or technically/nous not ready. Balogun may be able to help in domestic Cup competition, but throw him to even middle tier premiership tems defenders and he will like a lost lamb in a pack of wolves. Against Chelsea, Saka trapped Azpi’s forearm between his torso and his arm, throws himself to the floor and gets a penalty. The Bard

We may need as many as 6 players but there is no way we are going to buy them. We just don’t invest like that. A decent striker will probably cost north of £50m and another midfielder very decent money. I would think that will be it.

Karsa

I can see 4/5 signings this summer.

A big money striker and similar in midfield, coupled with 2/3 squad players/young prospects.

Nigel Tufnel

China posts have been solid. Agree with a lot.

I don’t see him as one of the haters at all. We could use more of the middle ground. Of course I get called an Arteta lover by the the brainless negative crowd.

Then they said I was out of line to criticize Arteta back in November, December. Like I’m not allowed have a nuanced opinion.

englandsbest

Within reason I don’t see money as a problem. It’s a case of ‘for want of a horseshoe the battle was lost.’ Having come this far, having cleared the decks, it’s more likely the Kroenkes will provide the wherewithal to complete the rebuild job.

AFC Forever

Karsa Yep. There will definitely be a few new signings. We had an over-bloated and unbalanced squad, lack of grafters and ego problems, so there has been a necessary culling. The club know this leaves us thin but it was part of the plan. Being in a top 4 fight will have surprised everyone at the club I suspect, so that probably gives even more belief we are on the right track. Emirates,

I really think we have to get 2 midfielders. Sambi has disappointed Arteta too much. We can work in some youth, but if in Europe at all we won’t have enough.. even ElNeny as the last resort is leaving. That means we’ll either upgrade him or work in a youth player for that spot.

Agree with Hutchinson to maybe provide some depth on the wings…but still would need to replace Pepe if he leaves, which I could see happening.

Valentin

We are likely to qualify for a European competition. Wolves and Leicester are too far behind to push us to 8th that is the first place without Europe. With the extra gale, we will need: + 2 strikers if Eddie leaves. Balogun is not ready. If our main striker is injured, we would have to rely on him and that should not even be considered. + 3 central midfielders: * 1 upgrade on Xhaka * 1 player who can rotate with Partey to avoid injuries. * 1 back up player to replace a leaving Elneny + 2 wingers * 1… Read more »

Mr Serge, a solid ‘No’ to me on Jesus, it’s not just recently but throughout his whole career his scoring record reads like a replica of Laca’s. Simply not good enough 👎🏻

It’s way to early to draw big conclusions from the Eddie but if it’s shown us anything so far, it’s the benefit of an actual 9 over this false 9 BS. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, peak Messi is the only player I’ve even seen perform at consistent level in that position. Jesus is just another unreliable false 9. We can do better.

BacaryisGod

Karsa Quit being obtuse. I literally said a few days ago that the primary reason for our recent run of defeats was the loss of Partey for the last two games and his post-International break bad return game. Losing Tierney and Tomiyasu has been extremely disruptive too. It also doesn’t make you anti-Arsenal to point out when other teams have injuries. I think the type of rumours like the Jesus one from Jorge Niicola, a Brazilian journalist, is what we can expect for a while. These journalists know Arteta has a good relationship with City players, Edu is Brazilian so it’s an easy ‘guess’.
