REPEATABLE SPECTACULAR GOALS AS ARSENAL GO TOP 4 PROPER

by .

Arsenal put in another ‘mostly’ professional performance as they picked apart Watford on a pretty breezy afternoon. The two whinges you could have were familiar:

  1. We don’t take enough of our chances
  2. Xhaka is going to Xhaka

Let’s be clear here, the only way we’ll get over those two issues is through a recruitment drive we know is coming this summer. There’s no point in dwelling on it. We have to make it work for 15 more games. Arsenal can do that.

What we should instead talk about is how this team of young players is now dropping scintillating passages of football and matching them with spectacular goals.

Each one of our offerings today was special. They all involved intricate passing patterns, they all involved big finishes, and each of them came from the generation of players that IS taking Arsenal to the Promised Land.

Odegaard started off the run of goals with a beautiful flick that played in Saka, his finish from his left slipped was a touch-BANG goal that was really impressive.

The second goal came from Saka winning the ball back in midfield, Lacazette rolling a backheel into his path, and a ruthless left foot into the top corner. It was world-class and speaks to our new system of creating chances by winning the ball back in dangerous areas.

The third goal was courtesy of my poor intent. I was about the Tweet, ‘GET MARTINELLI OFF’, it was stupid, I’m sorry for my thought crime. Arteta set us up for a quick throw. Cedric made the run, clipped an awkward ball into Odegaard, the Norwegian flicked the ball onto Lacazette who teed up Martinelli for the SCREAMER of a shot into the top corner.

Yes, yes, I will talk about their goals. One was a Trevor Sinclair screamer, congrats, it happens. The other was courtesy of Granit Xhaka trying a ridiculous pass considering the moment in the game. The second one was more annoying because you can’t point to it being an experience thing, it’s just part of the price of Xhaka. How do you stop a player in their late twenties doing dumb things? You sign someone above them like Tielemans.

Arsenal had some moments defensively. Aaron Ramsdale went into that mode when he starts trying to force things and his passing gets a bit wild. He needs to control his emotions in moments like that, because against a better team, he’d have been found out. That was a warning shot for Leicester. Also, there were just some brain dead moments in general from our defence. They were all at it. Let’s put it down to one of those days… a day we got away with.

But how about the positives? Scintillating football with an unpredictable edge. We really are the real deal. Top 4 is in our hands because we deserve it. It’ll still be tough, Spurs and United will still win games, but we’re starting to look like the team with the momentum. Really, injuries are the only impediment to our success.

The table looks good. Really, Spurs are the biggest impediment to our success. But… it’s in our hands. We play West Ham, Spurs, and United. If we deal with them, we are in the Champions League, if we don’t, it’s on us. Momentum is with Arsenal, we have to keep it going.

This group of players IS special. What we’re seeing speaks to elite coaching, top-level scouting, a proper culture, and a group of players that believe they can be the best in the world. This is the sauce I promised 2 years ago. Arsenal are moving to the next level, can we sustain it? Who knows. Today all that matters is this: 3 points.

Now listen to our podcast. I know I say it every week, but THANK YOU for watching and listening. You make the show great. It’s so fun to have you all on during the live session. Next season, we’ll kick it up a gear again IF you keep tuning in. Is that a threat? Yes. LISTEN OR FACE CONSEQUENCES. Love you. Have a banger of a day because YOU deserve it. x

AFC,

We also did red on red in the Europa League last season. I can’t stand the pyjama look. It’s a sartorial travesty and we’re better than that.

Nelson

The biggest discovery of our attack: Laca’s lay back of the ball for other forwards to fire home. I can see that this is the weapon we’ll use in the remaining matches of this season. I wouldn’t mind offering Laca a year extension with an option for one more year.

Pedro

YES SPUDNIK! So glad you like the OTW!

Habesha Gooner

Wonderful win. The goals were magnificent. Saka is clearly top 3 for players aged 20 and around that. Wirtz, and Foden are around there too. But the kid is playing like a pro in his late twenties. Odegaard was ridiculously good again. What a performance. The passing options he sees are difficult to comprehend. Lacazette also had a good game despite his wild finishing. Two beautiful assists. The negatives Our entire left side didn’t play well. Martinelli had a tough game despite scoring a worldie. Tierney wasn’t great at defending today. Gabriel also had his shaky moments. Xhaka though was… Read more »

wow, we are in a commanding position for top 4.

Table is looking good indeed. 12 more games is that it? Lets not spurs things up.

CaliGooner

Oh no! When laca had all day to shoot he produced his worst shot of his career. No he is done here as admirable as his assisted and team play and leadership is we need more from that position next season.

IAT-Robbie

LS,
“We played well today but aside from the three goals, we didn’t really threaten much”
I agree, the data supports that notion too.

“Our shots per game are increasing but a lot of it looks better on paper than in reality. Aside from the home game against Watford I can’t remember a game when we had 5-6 clear cut chances”

Regarding the shots increase, I agree and I’ve said as much in the past. I think the game against Leeds also had a lot of quality chances too

Leedsgunner

Thanks Middy!

That’s a shame because I reckon he would have been an asset today.

Tony

Got my dates mixed up yesterday thinking we had L’pool Wednesday. Good win, but we made hard work of of it and hopefully ESR is back for the Leicester game. Until Arteta benches Laca and Xhaka we are always going to make hard work of beating easy teams and experience extreme difficulty taking points off the top 3. I appreciate the Laca assists, but clearly the lay off back passes around Watford’s area have been worked on in training. We are where I expected us to be and now we need to show everyone we’re not giving CL football up.… Read more »

Tony, we are not where you expected us to be in March. You’ve spent the season telling everyone we’re shit and Arteta is a terrible coach. Not sure how you’ve pivoted to ‘I knew we’d be here.’

Arsenal: The Experience, once again delivered a roller coaster stage of its 17 game ride. I had my fingers crossed from the 86th minute onwards. Phew!!

13 games to go!

Tony

Troll away Pedro as it’s clear you have issues reading what’s in my past posts let alone remembering them. Make it up as you like as you always do. So childish. I’ve always said from the beginning of the season we have the squad for top 4 just that Arteta was a failure for the first 30 months, and was right. Now Arteta is beginning to find his feet and I’m happy winning games we should be winning, but there is still time for Arteta to fuck it up but keep playing Xhaka who you believe is decent but then… Read more »

Tony

Just so you’re clear, Pedro the only reason we don’t get 4th is because of Arteta continuing to play Laca and Xhaka.

It’ll all be on Arteta but won’t matter because you have such small Cojonas, you can’t not have a fail safe in place and even with 3 games in hand you still say 6th is the target.

Excuse at the ready, eh, Pedro? Predictable as always.

Kegunner

Left side of the pitch has been vulnerable and Tierney needs to command that flank better. He should martial Xhaka and Martenelli to better effect. Some games he is magnificent but he sometimes does not sense danger at the back and can also be caught up the pitch.

Seems to be issues with change of systems but he will need all his pace and tenacity to make it qualities he has.

Gonsterous

I don’t know why people are being so harsh on martinelli Our left side is very very weak, especially since we have xhaka there. Who, we are told has great passing but manages to mix that with 0 creativity. Replace xhaka with ESR and you have a strong left side attack. Tierney never fills me with confidence. He is good defensively but average on the attack. Every time martibellu had the ball, he had 2 defenders to take on. Yes, in certain counter attacking moments, he should have done better and im not saying he did nothing wrong but it… Read more »

Arsenal as a collective is playing better and they learn from their mistakes. Early in the season it was clear that the team could control matches in patches mostly early on. They now can play well over a huge chunk of a match. They are still gaps and they will be more bitter lessons ahead. However, it is commendable the stage of rebuilt that the team is in at the moment. A good summer transfer window with better players come in will take the project forward. For one I would like to see Pepe exchanged for one of our striking… Read more »

Looking at next season Im worried abouteho comes in for Laca? The lad is literally all action and a clear leader on the pitch. Hes got the nastiness we need, not scared to dabble in the dark arts, we need him. By all means get another RVP if there is one, but Laca has to stay, break the bank Tets

The Bard

Great win and 3 fantastic goals. Well though Laca is playing please don’t offer him a new contract. Players always excel in the last year because they are looking for a new contract . Look what happened to Auba.
Some good comments on our left side issue. I agree Tierney hasn’t progressed and with Xhaka in support it’s an issue. Xhaka failed to track the runner for the cross for the first goal. Just ambled back. Not good enough.

TallestTiz

Great game yesterday.

Xhaka the weakest link.

Imagine having ESR in Xhaka’s place in this set up against weak teams. We’d be smashing5 goals every game

Markymark

It still amazes me that after a win within a serious run of good form, that a minority remain bent on trying to denigrate and undermine the obvious improvement. The psychology of this is plain odd. I’d say nearest thing I can connect it to is the crazy QAnon when their posting boards started unraveling and their distorted dissonant world view was challenged and peeled away. It’s not like it’s even as it was under late Wenger years where the team would pull off a result to eases pressure on the boss. What we have now is a young side… Read more »

Yesterday, Lacazette did his best impression of Giroud with a couple of sublime touches around the edge of the box to set up a couple of goals.. What i liked about us offensively yesterday was that we went for the heart of the Watford defence when we had the chance. Odegaard was instrumental in most of our good attacking play , he is a different player when he speeds up his passing with one and 2 touch football similar to Smith Rowe’s game. As much as it looks like Odegaard is pulling the strings when we go forward , i… Read more »

Great result.
Great position to be in. Can we make the most of it?

The negative vibes remain because it’s Arteta, it’s really that simple. Hopefully he has learnt by his mistakes but the doubts still remain.
27 months post Emery and we find ourselves in a position where our destiny is our hands, 4th is now a must for Arteta. No excuses.

Graham62

Lacazette is proving his worth.
Also Cedric is a positive.

Emiratesstroller

At the start of this season expectations were very low following three defeats and conceding nine goals and scoring none. Since then our situation has improved and we have built a team, which is now at least competitive and able to win most of its games. I think that on current form and positioning the probability is that we will qualify next season for Europe. Whether that is in Champions League or Europa Cup remains to be seen. The one concern that I have at the moment is that we have a very small squad of just 21 players. We… Read more »

Bob N16

Graham, ‘ Negative vibes remain’ – I’m assuming that refers to your thinking as I’m pretty sure the players will be feeling positive about now. Laca is contributing but the only way he should get an extension is a drop in pay which as NigelT posted, shouldn’t be insulting. We’ve won four on the trot, all by a one goal margin, amazing that we’ve only drawn three all season. I think we’ll need game time from TT, ESR and Lokonga to deal with a busy run of fixtures. We have a tough run coming up and those games in hand… Read more »

ES, agreed we will need to bring in 5/6 but I think we all have residual confidence after the success of last summer’s TW. I think the only complication is having to wait to see where we finish, if we get CL football our targets should be really exciting! Graham, Agree Cedric has been a competent back up but would still be happier if he was upgraded this Summer. Laca is doing what an experienced pro on £180k a week should be doing although ‘what he does best’ is not scoring goals but assisting. I know I can be a… Read more »

At least you’re consistent on Xhaka Pedro. I think everyone on here knows what you really think of the guy.

But got to say, having been at the game yesterday, seems a bit unfair and scapegoaty to pin our entire defensive shortcomings on Xhaka. Really Watford could easily have won that with their chances, we were far too open and gifted them too many good opportunities (7 shots on target to our 4) – but that was a collective failure, not down to one player – and honestly I think you should focus on that.

Samesong

At this stage it’s all about points on the board and staying injury free. I would like to see when Eddie and Pepe come on that they keep the ball a little better and make the opposition commit the fouls on them rather than the other way around. I also hope that Gabi gets that great form back he seems like he’s dropped off in terms of concentration. We need him back to his best. Emiratesstroller

Bob N16 Th two strategic positions in team which need addressing are the central midfield and striker positions. Xhaka is a decent footballer, but prone to mistakes and when these happen in dangerous positions they are invariably consequential as we have seen far too frequently. We need a more mobile and creative player who is also a better decision maker. My personal preference would be Declan Rice. He would be an excellent fit for our team. Lacazette is a good footballer and hard working, but he is no longer a goalscorer. That is what we need. I watched David the… Read more »

Jaroda

4th is in our control now. The question is how this affects us mentally. It’s great being in the position to chase for 4th – if you fail trying then you can say, great effort but we didn’t quite get there. If you are leading it’s much harder to stay ahead and should we fail it has potentially more damaging consequences to the confidence of the group. Ideally we need to keep focussed on stretching for 3rd place now. Go for third and if we fail fine we get fourth. But the group need to maintain the mentality that they… Read more »

I hereby withdraw my view that Öde is a dud.. he is the conductor

raptora

Martinelli is shaping up as a Alexis type of player – quite a decent amount of turnovers but it’s the price you are willing to pay because when he develops a bit more, he’ll know better when to dribble, where to dribble to and when to release the ball or shoot. He’s not been as good as earlier in the season lately, but hopefully this cracking goal will help him. I think ESR and Pepe should get some chances to start in the upcoming games. It’s a similar compromise to De Bruyne who has completed 76.6% of his passes and… Read more »

Goobergooner

Jaroda,

I feel like if our mentality for the rest of the season sees us 4th (or even 3rd), it will bode very, very well for CL next season.

We need a better sized/quality squad as a whole if we want to do well on multiple fronts next season (if we get cl) but if the boys can use this test to build their own mental strength, I will be absolutely optimistic about our chances of proving ourselves worthy of the CL position.

Jaroda

We’re 14 pts better off than after 25 games last season.

Models suggest we get top 4 66% of the time from this position.

Goobergooner

Raptora,

I agree on martinelli.

But his mistakes put us under a fuck load of pressure due to xhaka and Tierney’s roles tactically.

When Saka loses the ball there are multiple players around to pressure the opponent.
Martinelli is way more isolated, so in essence his mistakes look worse.

Dark Hei

Tony Actually I think that dumping PEA and starting Xhaka in his current role is the correct call. I am more of the, “if we win it in the end, it is the right call”. I am certainly not saying that those 2 should continue beyond this season. But as it is we are playing fluently and there seem to be a togetherness in this team. I won’t be so sure that we are 100% better than say Totts or Man United that we can clearly say we have a top 4 squad. If anyone on paper deserve to be… Read more »

Jarod agreed that you should be positive but you have to play what’s in front of you and the league position sorts itself out. I think too much is made about ‘aiming for third’ or whatever, it’s verging on the cliche- you try and control what you do which has only a small tangible effect on other teams points acquisition. As I posted on several occasions the next three games against Leicester, Liverpool and Aston
Villa could decide our season. We are playing three games in 7 days.

If we can win two of these games then I think that we have a good chance of top 4 finish.

Also we need both Tomiyasu and Smith-Rowe both fit and back in team as soon as possible.

Goobergooner

I also believe if Pepe started he would have looked better.

He has the attributes to take the play to an open game, but 20 odd mins after barely any mins just doesn’t cut it for getting your game together

Goobergooner

Cedric is a very capable player and backup option, but the longer a game goes on the more erratic he gets in both passing and tackling.

Can’t say whether that’s just him or lack of proper competitive minutes.

Otherwise he’s doing a job especially first halves

Goobergooner

Also Bob, the more and more I watch the ode backheel to Saka, the more and more I am astounded haha.

He did that with such ease and simplicity as well as being under pressure and on the move, at the moment it happened my jaw dropped haha.

That was an absolutely delicious goal

Bob N16

Goober, I find Cedric a bit of an enigma, he looks really good and then passes it into touch!

Graham62

Bob N16

How’s it going?

I agree, the Xhaka scenario is baffling.

Goobergooner

Hahaha Bob, hes a strange one. I’d replace him no worries. But yeah my main problem is he seems to not lack stamina or something . He drops off a cliff

Pierre

Do we need a goalscorer ? We had one of the best goalscorers in Europe and gave him away ( or did we pay him to leave) . We have a young striker who has probably the best goals per minute in English football this season and is yet to start a league game this season We had a central midfielder who has scored double figures from central midfield in the last 12 months for a team fighting relegation, which is probably 10 more goals than the whole of our central midfield has scored in the last 12 months. I agree that we should focus on finishing 4th. Realistically Chelsea are a better team and
have a better squad than us.

Declan Rice may well be beyond our reach. However, I don’t think that his Chelsea past has any relevance unless they have an option.

Manchester United are such a mess at the moment that frankly if I was a half decent player
I would not be rushing to join them.

Goobergooner

Emirates,

I reckon a draw and a win next 3 games will still see us in a good position.

But I’d definitely take 2 draws and a win let alone 2 wins

TheBlaster

The aggressive press is the difference. It always was. This team remind me a little of Ferguson’s teams. Even in days of the invincibles I used to secretly wish we had that overall team desire to mercilessly batter opponents like United did. If Arteta really has permanently drilled in that mindset of intensely pressuring opponents, then that for me is the holy grail for us. The missing link. A superstar like Haaland would be like dropping a depth charge into the middle of this team. End the hopes of a whole bunch of peopl for career progression. Terrible idea. Having… Read more »

Blaster, well said.

Imagine if laca could still score as well as graft his way through a match for the team. We’d be insane.

Rich keeps harping on it but it makes so much sense. Don’t build a ‘team’ then get the show stopper to ruin the chemistry

Goobergooner

Stroller,

If it was Europa I’d be more inclined to agree. But cl not as assured.

In saying that I’d keep him and improve the midfield and striker position 100% of the time

Goobergooner

I think our ability to play a high press has been more and more addressed since Mertesacker left haha.

In saying that, xhaka still a liability. And I like our play even under latter weng, we just didn’t have the personnel

Jaroda

I thought it was interesting that Saka mentioned that the target was Champions league in the after match interview. That shows they are thinking further ahead than just one game at a time.

DivineSherlock

Man would we need some good quality players next season for Europe . Defense looks sorted with one addition of Saliba and keep Holding + RB (Norton Cuffy bloke is impressing everyone at Lincoln City) , maybe a backup GK if Leno goes . I would promote Patino , Hutchinson . Lacazette deserves to play for us in CL so maybe a sentimental 2year for him . Now the midfield is the most tricky part , get it right and we could be genuine title contenders in 2years time. Tielemans and Neves the obvious options.

Jaroda

Is 70 pts going to be enough for 4th?
We need 22pts more from 13 games.
W7 D1 L5
W6 D4 L3
Conceivably we can take 0pts from the Che, Liv, Mu and Tot games and still hit 70 points.

Bob N16

All good Graham, how’s the south coast?

Very salty Pierre. PEA had to leave, Willock had a mutually beneficial move and Eddie ‘best goal for minutes”Nketiah as long as you don’t worry about who the opposition was!

‘Relying on trio of young strikers’ – we sure are, they’re quality

Goobergooner

Jaroda,

I believe top 4 has always been the target, despite peds saying otherwise.

I just think that the club, having given a rookie a shot, would take a couple of seasons to let that play out without proper responsibility being at the forefront

Divine Sherlock I think that Leno is leaving this summer. Arsenal appear to have recruited Turner the current US National Goalkeeper. I agree with your analysis of our Defence. Pierre it’s an interesting point about whether we need a striker given anyone decent is going to cost huge amounts of money. City don’t have one and Chelsea paid a fortune for 3. Maybe we would be better splashing a lot on a decent midfielder like Rice.

Habesha Gooner

Would you guys take Gabriel Jesus as the main CF signing in the summer? City are apparently trying to sign Haaland and give that Alvarez kid a chance as backup.

I think Jesus has been under utilized at city. And he will be in his last year in the summer. His overall game is fantastic but he needs to score more. Even our top targets aren’t that much better than him. And he is on 90k at city. What are your thoughts.

Rich

The end product will flow for Saka now, he won’t stop scoring, he’ll become prolific, we’re in possession of one of the worlds elite young players. Smith Rowe has got plenty of end product. Odegaard should develop into a double digits goals + assists midfielder, Arteta challenging him to improve his output, which worked with Smith Rowe. Absolutely

Emiratesstroller

The Bard I think that the club’s owners are committed to a large transfer budget this summer. It is fairly clear that the striker position is going to be the major cost requirement. I don’t think that we are going to recruit a “super star”, but I do think that whoever we buy will cost between £50 and 70 million. Agree

All signs indicate money is not a problem, Arteta will be given the money he needs to bring in the players he needs. With two provisos: he gets value for money, and gets finally rid of the unwanted.

We can expect two elite signings – a striker and a midfielder – plus back-ups, plus maybe youngsters for the future.

Rich

ES

Laca was prolific in his last 3 seasons at Lyon, but never came close to matching that output in the PL

Bob N16

Rich is a quality player – no doubt but I think it’s very noticeable how refreshed and at the top of his game he’s looked recently.

Not saying he’s been over played exactly, he’s vitally important to the team but there may be times when he needs to be subbed at say 65 mins if he’s looking a little jaded.

This is a player who plays internationals and tournaments as well as appearing in every PL game.

Bob N16

Saka is a quality player, not so sure about Rich!

RICH Arsenal are not going to buy a superstar striker. We are clearly not going to buy someone like Haaland or Mbappe.
