SIEGE THE MOMENT

by .

Remember a few months ago a certain section of fans were losing their minds because our xG didn’t match to our Premier League position?

I wrote:

xG is a stat that is designed to give you a deeper understanding of results. Weaponising it when we’re 5th in the table isn’t sharp unless you have a good angle of attack, especially when context would say fans that actually go are very happy, and pundits were asking Arteta if Arsenal were a title threat before the Liverpool game.

Our start was brutal. We had a covid outbreak that wiped out 5 players, plus 4 injuries. We lost to Brentford, then had to play the European Cup finalists back to back. That was not good for xG. We deserved to lose, but there was context to those failings, and I think we’ve all accepted them now.

We’re 5th. Even after getting spanked by Liverpool this weekend.

We are 5th after our worst start in Premier League history. This position been earned.

We are 5th after reengineering our starting 11 with 6 players under the age of 24. These players have had 9 games together.

We are 5th after playing Manchester City and Liverpool away from home.

The xG sample size is small, it lacks context, and the eye test isn’t really telling us the things the Emery eye test was.

So now things have settled on our season, Arsenal is 55% into it… where does the xG have us now?

via Scott @OhThatCrab

We are where we should be based on the context of the season, where we are in the table, and the eye test.

We are not better than City, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Three clubs that are mainstays of the Champions League latter stages and always in contention for the title.

… but we are no deservedly in the mix for top 4. We’re most tightly huddled in that table with Spurs and West Ham… United are not far behind.

Those three games at the start of the season, which hurt our xG badly, still hurt us, but even with those moments included, we’re extremely competitive.

Let’s be more specific, since the first international break Arsenal is 4th for points (4 points behind CFC with 3 games in hand). 4th for goals scored. We have the 3rd best defence (Wolves and City better us by 3 goals). We have to keep it going, but anyone telling you we aren’t improving is a little too wrapped in their own agenda to notice how things are really going.

The action continues against Wolves. As you can see from their table, their issue is Arsenal in the first season under Arteta. A great defence combined with a poor attacking output. No doubt they’ll score three past us on Thursday.

Our weakness has widely been considered to be the attack. To some degree that is true, but really, when you look at it on paper, it’s not a debilitating issue like some make it out. We’re within 3 goals of a United team dripping in attacking players, they’ve played 2 more games than us. We’ve scored more than Spurs. West Ham has 9 more goals than us, but they’ve also played 3 more games.

Could our attacking output be better? Absolutely. But there’s also the context of the striking issues we’ve had this season. The underlying mechanics of how we play was a problem last season, not so much this one. 3rd most shots attempted in the Premier league. 4th most shots on target in the Premier League. If you keep that level of output up with a young team, eventually the goals should follow.

Arteta spoke in his prematch presser and he was bullish.

He said he was the solution, alluding to Auba being the problem.

He was adamant that there wasn’t an option to strengthen with a player that would have improved us.

He was bullish on the players he has to work with.

‘I trust my players’

He also seemed pleased with the midseason break. The players are focused, the spirit is good, and we’ve worked on things we need to improve on.

As my good friend Alfred said, we have all the ingredients for siege mentality.

Everyone in the squad counts. The odds are stacked against us. There is unity in the squad. Each week is a cup final.

That’s exciting. Best case scenario we make the Champions League. Worst case, these players experience something very new and it builds out Arsenal IP for next season.

Right, short one today, jump into our podcast, and really enjoy it hard.

I had a bad feeling going into the Burnley game, tired legs, stretched squad, disappointed we dropped 2 points, but not particularly surprised.

I’m reasonably optimistic about tonight, if we can keep 11 players on the pitch, I can see us winning

If we can get a goal, then force Wolves to commit bodies forward, we could have some real joy in behind.

When we dropped 2 disappointing points at home to Palace, we followed it up with a win at Leicester, we need to see the same type of response tonight.

Wolves 0-3 Arsenal

Tom

Bob, Willian was a signing , Coutinho is a loan with no obligation to sign. I wasn’t agitating for bringing him in as much as I was saying I’d take him because he wasn’t done as a player, and a definite upgrade on some of our talent. I know there’s a project youth wave sweeping these shores and Pedro and a good number of others have been riding it with gusto, but I think it’s foolish to believe it will yield the required resultswithout a handful of players in their prime sprinkled in. You know it’s been taken to the… Read more »

Saka in the EPL after 20 games:

2020/21 to 2021/22
goals scored – 5 / 6
shots taken per 90 mins – 2.45 / 2.54
assists – 2 / 4
chances created – 23 / 32
final 3rd passes completed – 190 / 222

Not going to lie, this is some minimal gains over the course of 1 season. I’ve expected a bigger improvement honestly.

Tom

B63, how could Bruno Lage take wolves 5 places up the table and transform their leaky D into the second stingiest in the league without any spending and\or player reshuffle, to the point where half of this board think avoiding defeat will be a good result for us?

Must be a miracle worker.

Bob N16

Tom,

Sterling and Bernardo Silva being turned down- must have missed that.

I suspect there may well be 2/3 more experienced players coming in to flesh out the squad come the summer, I essentially agree with the strategy of signing 21-23 year olds but feel sure that it’s not going to preclude the odd older player if they seem a good fit. Just have to be careful about length of contract and how much they’re paid and of course whether they’re good footballers and have the right attitude!

Raptora Saka is 20, look at the issues both Sancho + Havertz have had since coming to the PL There’s very few players south of 25 who get into double figures in the PL, in recent seasons I can only think of Rashford. Foden got 9 goals + 6 assists in the PL last season, but he’s playing in a far superior team, he’s also 18 months older, so last season Foden would have been 6 months older than Saka is now. Saka is on to at least match Foden’s 9 goals + 6 assists this season. Cristiano Ronaldo At… Read more »

Still a pretty decent output from a RW.

Tom, Maybe Bruno Lage is a miracle worker, they are joint top PL performer over the last 5 games with Man City, winning 4 and drawing 1. We have also moved up 14 places since our 3rd game of the season when we were bottom, We also had 9 players out for those opening games but I guess that doesn’t count for anything in your book ? They also coincided with two games away and one at home including games against Chelsea & Man City. It’s not inconceivable that we could have been sitting in 4th now with games in… Read more »

The only time I like Rich’s stats (only kidding man). Rightly said, he is only 20 years old and doing far better than players of his age and even older than him.

He is keeping Pepe on bench. rap – I’m on pessimistic side and generally agree with what you say but for the sake one – agree to disagree.

Tony

Bob I get what you experience but for me it’s diluting the excitement. I prefer to dispense with the emotional safety net and kick every ball and dipping shoulders when appropriate. My boy and I are synchronized it makes my wife laugh.

Mind you this has only happened recently a few times. Before it was pitiful to watch.

I’m expecting a City performance or better so we’re up for it here expecting us to kick on after the rest and Arteta/coaches’ work on the squad.

Rich

Saka has 6 goals + 4 assists. Thats 10 goals contribution in 21 appearances. Like you said, his stats are nothing to be sniffed at such a young age.

Will be interesting to see how he keeps improving and he will.

raptora

I’m saying that Saka’s numbers have improved minimally. It’s not a matter of ifs or buts, it’s a fact.

I didn’t say that his numbers aren’t good to begin with. Just that I expected a bigger improvement. Which goes to show how high I rate him and what I expect him to become.

Bergkamp63

Wolves have won 4 and drew 1 of their last 5 games ? Maybe we are being too expectant of a win against them today.

Bruno Lage giving me some ‘very good coach’ vibes.

Naija+soccer

Saka is basically averaging a goal or assist every other game.

raptora

The other teams around us fucking up actually give us a chance to make another fuck up unpunished. A draw today will totally not be the end of the world. Certainly more reasonable to draw here than to Burnley at home like we did. But this is what it is, if we win today we allow more fuckups later in the season. If we don’t win today, we need to make it up in the next games. But at least we are afforded to draw and still have a chance. Cause the teams around us have been pretty bad.

Naija+soccer

I m still hoping that Arteta will experiment with Pepe in the Ronaldo role for some of our remaining games. I think he will be flawless near the 18 yard box, far way from the wings.

Bob N16

Tony,

You’d accept my excitement is not diluted if you saw me when we score a goal and I jump around and hug everybody around me and for that matter when I kick the seat in front of me, spinning around with my head in my hands after a golden opportunity missed.

Kroenkephobe

force Wolves to commit bodies forward, we could have some real joy in behind

A powerful image there… I thought I’d inadvertently tuned into my favourite website http://www.lusciouslupinelabias.com

Bob N16

Not sure if I dare click on that link, Kroenke- suggests bestiality(no offence)!

Terraloon

Rich

The lad Armando Broja on loan at Southampton from Chelsea ( he is slightly younger than Saka) has 6PL goals in 1057 minutes ( Saka 6 in 1578)

Bob N16

What’s your point Terraloon, that if you look hard enough you can find a statistic that makes an Arsenal player relatively worse? Striving for a truth or just being a contrarian on an Arsenal blog?

raptora

Bob, the sheriff is here. Every comment goes through his supervision. Beware.

Rich

Broja
6 goals + 0 assists
1057 minutes
A goal contribution every 176 minutes

Saka
6 goals + 4 assists
1580 minutes
A goal contribution every 158 minutes

Our boy smokes that bum, and he does it from playing out wide, not from playing centrally.

Bob N16

raptora, don’t you think it’s reasonable to comment on an Arsenal blog?

If I’m in the mood I react to posts that stink of negative agenda- is this not allowed, are you ‘policing me’? (ironically!)

Mark

You just know we’ll get given some soft yellows from this Rat faced Cunt Oliver! Softer than the wolves fouls he’s not given any cards for so far. 😡

Mark

Toldya. And now the Arsenal bookings start…

I hate Oliver Ray faced Cunt!
