SIGN ARTETA TO NEW DEAL

by .

There are some big games in the race for top four this weekend.

United are having a good go at West Ham right now.

Lucky Spurs are going to get another crack at the fragile Thomas Tuchel operation tomorrow.

That means there’s no other option on the table for Arsenal, we have to beat Burnley at home.

January has been poor results wise, but really, the only true shocker was our second string against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup. The rest of the games don’t sit in ‘OH MY GOD’ category. 75% of our games came against top 2 sides. We played incredibly well against City and lost in the margins. We did really well against Liverpool at Anfield with 10 men. We lost the second leg because we didn’t have enough fit players, but remember, we reduced Liverpool to 3 shots on target, 2 went in. No shame again. 3 reds in those games as well.

There will be shame if we don’t do the job against Burnley. We’re not expected to beat top 2 teams, but we are expected to beat teams sitting on 11 points, that haven’t played a game since early January. Having seen United, Spurs, and Arsenal do very little with a break, it’s starting to feel like COVID breaks aren’t that much of an advantage, unless you are Liverpool, and there was no COVID in the first place.

Decent performances without results can turn into a sharp upswing, or a miserable downturn. Our month on results paper has been poor, if we put a performance together with a win tomorrow, we’ve come out of January unscathed when it comes to the Premier League, then we’ll have 17 days in Dubai to regroup, recuperate, and plan the next attack on Phase 6 which is basically a group of games where you’d expect a high points return.

Transfer news still seems a little bleak. Nothing appears to be moving forward. Not that we’d know. The striker deal is the one that worries me. If can’t land our primary target, I hope we don’t get emotional and sign a second rate striker that we’ll be lumbered with for years. I felt we did that when we signed Giroud who basically became the replacement for Robin Van Persie. We moved from power, pace and poise to something that didn’t anything above top 4 aspirations.

Oddly, a Giroud in this system would be a huge upgrade on what we have. But we really need to try and have it all. Goals, power, pace, relentless work ethic, and a hunger to win. Don’t push strikers at me that don’t score goals, we have a superb link player right now. I’m also a wary of Arsenal signing a player with a chequered injury past. History is a good indicator of the future, as Colin Lewin said on The Arsenal Opinion Podcast a few months ago.

If we’re going to sign a striker, make it as perfect as you can, especially if you are waving mega pound notes at the deal.

The final story of the day is that Arsenal are looking to offer Arteta a two year extension to his deal. I don’t know why this is causing consternation amongst anyone. Well I do, certain people don’t have much vision, can’t fathom that young talent gets better, and they always think there is one manager that can unlock title-winning potential from the 15 top players we have.

Ask yourself these questions:

Do you like having the youngest team in the Premier League?

Do you like the ruthless deck sweeping that’s happened over the last two years?

Do you like that we’re in the mixer for top 4 at the end of January?

Do you like the new players we have and what they stand for?

Do you like seeing youth prospects develop?

Do you like the pride everyone feels for the club?

Do you like that The Emirates is a fortress of noise?

If you do, then I don’t understand why you’d be against a new deal.

Here’s the reality with Arteta, he’s one of the top young coaches in the world, without doubt. Whether you like it or not, he’s reshaped the club inside two years and outfitted it with a modern vision that feels very different to anything we’ve done in the last 5 years. You might want to see him finish 4th for us to get that deal out, but remember, 4th is a new objective most have put on the club because of the progress. There was a large section of the fanbase that thought he’d be out by November. If your expectations are 4th, then you must see the promise. Reality Check: The objectives he was set were not 4th this season. Europe this season. Top 4 next season. Title challenge the season after.

Also, the sort of people that say ‘we should wait’ don’t really understand the human side of this. Waiting is not a show of faith. If you don’t show faith in the manager, players will see that and that will affect performance. If you make a manager wait and he succeeds, do you think they’ll stay loyal to you? ‘Wait’ is what insecure execs do. Tie him down like Brighton did to Graham Potter. You think he’s not moved clubs because of his talent? No. It’s because he has an expensive buyout clause.

The irony of all the angst over all of this is if Arteta does make top 4, Manchester City and Barcelona will drop in for him, because they’ll look at the body of the project, the restrictions, and the age of the players he’s coaching, and say… this is a good coach that fits our philosophy.

Also, it’s quite fun to ask people what the alternatives are now, because we’ve seen literally all of them in action. How is Ralf doing? Does anyone watch lucky Spurs and want a piece of Conte? What about Thomas Tuchel, just 9 points ahead of us with 3 games in hand. Is that the levels everyone was telling me we were missing? Those are rockstar names. Not to mention those that have already fallen in this league.

Anyway, big game tomorrow, let’s deal with Burnley and make sure we go into the Dubai break on a high.

You can link our current problems to the poor squad planning decisions made back in the summer

Nowhere near enough quality in the middle of the park and we lack somebody ruthless up top, the old boys are past it and Martinelli is too young and is still a bit raw to be relying on.

underrated Coq

Depressing watching Lokonga in midfield, the player has no personality. Xhaka over this one, every day of the week

EdTheREd

Well, that was totally predictable. No goal scored by Arsenal in over 7 hours of playing football. Last time that happened was in November 2020, 14 months ago. Process my arse.

It was criminal negligence to spend £135m in the summer and not bring in one proper CM. Lokonga was a raw kid from the Belgian league that was always going to need time to settle in, a season or two at least.

Batistuta

Also again, he may not be a world beater but absolutely horrible decision letting AMN go out on loan without getting adequate cover in said position, one we knew since August we’d be without 2 players by January

David Smith

There were mitigating circumstances including officials who judge other players by different standards to some of ours, Westwood should have been sent off, as anyone in an Arsenal shirt would for what he did. But, Arteta has to take some of the blame here. He leaves substitutions way too late, he’s worse than Wenger on that front. And , if you are going to loan or hound players out, at least have replacements ready. Arteta hasn’t done that, now , we are likely to play the rest of the season with a thin squad, and two strikers, both off the… Read more »

Lokonga was worse than Elneny
He has to be shorn of all confidence , that was a cowardly performance

Makes the decision to go into a pivotal season [ first without European football in 25 years] with Elneny/Partey/Xhaka/Lokonga look even more stupider by the day

Batistuta

And when we highlight how unnecessary the Ben White signing was despite how good he’s been for the most part, it’s because we knew our midfield and attack needed more work than splurging on a fancy defender

Batistuta

Also same with the Auba situation, he was out of confidence e.t.c. but need your full squad available for the most part.

Having beefs with players and banishing them especially in a position where you’re short is just madness if you ask me.

White has been solid but has he really added much of an impact on us that it justifies spending nearly half of our summer budget on him? Is he doing a job that Saliba or Mavropanos would have been incapable of?

Pedro and others swear down that he was ‘essential’, I can’t see how anyone watching us lately could say that.

underrated Coq

Lacazette missing the Sitter after Smith Rowe’s brilliant run sums up his Arsenal career. Pound to pound probably the second worst player we have signed, after Mr.Pepe

The state of the midfield is the result of dumb decisions ‘
We all knew Lokonga was one for the future, yet he’s expected to carry the team through Jan

Then you add sending AMN to Roma in the first week of January
Whatever happened to holding on to players until you sign replacements.

S23

Another dismal showing,we must enter the transfer market now-but I fear 4th has packed its bags and left us.
We have all been here before, out of everything before February begins.

Samesong

Did anyone see Ziyech goal today? Worldie

DId anyone see Jacks Paddy power advert looking for a club?

Who’s still. bigging up Tierney as one of the best left full backs in the league?

He’s too mono-talented. It’s like trying to mimic Pavarotti with only one tone of voice.

Dissenter

Eddie Nkettiah shouldn’t play another game for Arsenal. He’s looked like he’s in a vacation fir a while, just waiting to see how much sign on bonus he gets in June.

Removing ESR for him was crazy.

Skipped the post because I’m not in the mood for Pete’s marketing campaign today. I’m sick of hearing about Arteta. He’s fine, he has us in a decent spot at this point in the season, but if he finishes eighth again than he absolutely should not be extended. Good on Johnny and Matt calling out Pete’s “top four has always been a stretch goal bollocks. He’s spent a decade abusing Wenger for the failure of making top four every season and, every now and then, mounting a half hearted title challenge. Now saying that sixth is good enough is absolute… Read more »

Yeah Tierney has seriously regressed to the point I have my doubts as to whether he’ll be a staple for us long-term.

Remember wanting Theo Hernandez that summer before Milan snapped him up but not being too bothered about it given how well Tierney took to us initially.

In hindsight, Theo would have been a much better signing.

Mr Serge

Kk needs to be dropped he offers nothing atm this was a massive opportunity missed we had so many chances but we’re toothless up top, unless we get a proper striker in the next 2 weeks top 4 is not happening. Today really pissed me of

Dissenter

Arteta made some basic coaching mistakes today

Why didn’t Saka and Martinelli switch wings during the game, that’s just elemental coaching.

Arteta stands on the sidelines, just barking away. He needs to sit down and watch the game more, not run commentaries from the sideline.

Mr Serge

KT I mean obviously

White has grown on me but when you see the performances of Mavropanos and Saliba in particular, you just think maybe we could have taken that 50 million and thrown it at a Ruben Neves and we’re probably better as a team this season

Batistuta

When the unreliable Xhaka is your best midfield option, then yea the planning over the summer was quite bad.

Don’t think we’ll ever move forward till we fix that position

Samesong

I can’t help thinking Citeh game really affected us mentally. It’s really weird we had momentum going into that game and since that game everything’s gone pear. The 3 sendings off have killed us.

Dissenter

I laughed every time the Emirates crowd berated the referee for allowing Nick Pope to waste time.

Didn’t they realize we were wasting as much time while setting up to take goal kicks?

GAZZA

Pleas stop the negative posts on Lokonga he is still raw & learning & shouldn’t be expected to run a midfield basically on his own at this stage of his career.. the criticism should be correctly aimed at Xhaka & Partey for their brain fart indiscipline plus Arteta for letting AMN without replacing this month..

Soham

Will be lucky to finish top 6 this season…Arteta not confident of new signings as well ! Will then have to reintegrate Auba at some point.

I blame Arteta 100% for Xhaka still being at Arsenal.
He loves the dude and blocked his exit last summer and January 2020.

Batistuta

Yea can’t knock Lokonga too, it’s his first season and for a youngster who again had to do it all on his own, he didn’t do badly. What we needed was more experienced players in that position brought in this summer

WengerEagle

It’s clearly not Lokonga’s fault he is raw and unready for first XI PL football on a team contending for a CL spot.

It’s on Tets that one. Not that many on here will ever admit that.

S23

Some of the decisions again this weekend are atrocious, especially Jota jumping into the keeper for a penalty,Firminho offside, but declared not interfering with play-yet one of our players is getting investigated?
I dont think any of the fair minded fans are blaming our young players, the senior pro’s definitely should be getting pelters.
Arteta saying the January window is difficult-surely loan someone or offer a short contract with options at the end if they perform,a lame excuse.
There have been some fleeting high points on the season so far,but Arteta rightly or wrongly is also learning on the job.

Nigel Tufnel

Very depressing loss .. feels like a loss…we have to carry this garbage for 2 full weeks now. Disgusting. This was the worst time for this.

Went from favorites for 4th, in my view, to longshot already.

A couple great saves on Øde and Emile frustrated, and wasted opportunities. Need a killer striker in the middle which would make the whole team better. They cam double cover both wings as we are.

Graham62

Dissenter I have just watched the highlights of the game. The result doesn’t surprise me as, over the past few games we’ve looked bereft of ideas and energy. Burnley hadn’t played a PL game for three weeks but that shouldn’t be used as an excuse. Your Saka/ Martinelli point is just typical Arteta. He stands shouting and gesticulating but it’s as if he doesn’t see what’s playing out in front of him. He has no flexibility in his coaching and game management and if anyone tells me he’s still learning I’ll go ballistic! He is so one dimensional and this… Read more »

Nigel

Yes you can blame the players but………come on, don’t deny it …we have a manager that lacks imagination and flexibility in his methods and his in game management.

I just know the excuses will be based on our players being inexperienced and give them time.

I point the finger of blame only at one person, not the players.

Kegunner

I agree all players with six months to leave and sidelined players should be sent to the under 23 squad. They have nothing they are playing for and most likely they will worsen any deal they get in the summer by poor play.

Give them a break get new players or youth players in the squad.

rollen

Good timing with shilling Pedro.

season over by January.
