HAPPY NEW YEAR x

by .

Arsenal vs Manchester City is coming tomorrow.

Mikel Arteta will not be present because he has COVID, but rest assured, the man will be going overdrive to ensure he’s delivering all the strategy meetings and making sure there are no excuses for the players.

This game is the hardest we’ll play all year, City are immense, there is no better-coached team in world football right now.

… but Arsenal cannot let them happen to us again.

We have to show up tomorrow. If we’re going to lose, I don’t want it to be a City gimme. I’d like constructive failure if there has to be a failure at all.

What I’d really like is a point or more.

Everything has to roll our way for that to happen.

City concede about 6.7 shots per game. That means we need to take our chances because they control the space better than anyone.

City average 19 shots per game. We have to be ruthlessly efficient in defence and make sure those 19 shots are speculative.

We also have to have a bit of luck, you simply don’t beat City without all three of those things going your way.

… but why not?

Leicester beat Liverpool earlier in the week and they’ve been awful all season. They nearly made a game of it against City pulling back 3 goals after going 4 down. There is no reason we can’t make a go of it if the belief is there.

There’s a bit of a worry that Tomiyasu wasn’t pictured in training, I know last week they were expecting him back. So fingers crossed on that one, I’d rather Ben White as right-back than rolling the dice on Cedric or Chambers.

Outside that, we’re rolling with a full team. Everyone is in great form right now, so I have no idea who he’ll select, all we can be sure of is there will be a plan constructed by an inside that might give us a chance.

Short post today.

It’s New Years Eve and I want to thank you all for reading.

We had our best ever month with The Arsenal Opinion. We had more listens this year than we did the three previous years combined.

We had our best year for website traffic and repeat visitors.

We gave you 301 stories.

There were 152,000 comments on the blog.

Our top 9 countries by traffic looked a little different. I see you India, climbing into the Champions League spots.

  1. England
  2. America
  3. Nigeria
  4. India
  5. Ireland
  6. Australia
  7. South Africa
  8. Kenya
  9. Sweden

We started live streaming this year and we have a Youtube page. We made 34 videos and people watch them… like, really watch them 20,000 hours of time.. It’s tiny in comparison to the big channels, but it’s still cool, and we are only just starting.

… and most importantly, we end the year with Arsenal in the top 4.

Without doubt, this last year has been one of the hardest I’ve ever had to write for, and I’ve taken on some pretty meaty topics over the years. There’s been a lot of character assassination, a lot of pretty aggressive commentary because of my views, and it’s been very stressful. 14 years of writing doesn’t make you immune to it.

… but we’ve come out the other side. It might be harder being team positive, but people seem to prefer it. I get more traffic on all channels after a win, than a loss. That’s a big change. More people visit my Twitter page monthly than the blog by about double (people prefer to search and read than admit they follow). So the pivot is doing ok.

Arsenal is top 4. People are saying this is one of the most exciting projects in world football. We have a squad of players everyone loves. The fans are rocking in The Emirates.

What more could you ask for? I mean, bar all the good bits continue at a faster clip.

Arsenal might be back people, for once, the hope is well placed.

So here’s to everyone having a great send off this evening, here’s to your health and wellbeing, and here’s to us all having a spectacular 2022.

I love you all, thank you for keeping me going, see you in the comments. xxx

Spurs got the luck, and help we conspicuously lacked today,, but I wouldn’t be worried about them either
Genuine question, isn’t it about time someone from the club had a word with someone high up about the refereeing this team is getting? From what I saw, City got literally every possible decision going? What’s their pen shout really any more convincing than the incident with MO?
They must have a pretty large dossier of shite refereeing from this season alone, I was hoping some of that would die out when Wenger left, but seems to have got worse if anything

Rich

Samesong We know it’s going to be tight at the finishing line, I’d be surprised if there was more than a maximum of 7 points separating 4th-8th Not much between ourselves, Spurs, United, West Ham, Leicester, still 54 points to play for, with plenty of ups + downs in-between Important we avoid defeat at Spurs, a point away would be a good result for us, and a bad result for them If performances are an indicator, then we look more convincing than Spurs right now, our attack is beginning to click I don’t think Saka will look back from here,… Read more »

The reffing in this game was dreadful

How the fuck was Gabriel’s a straight red???? And surely if there is a red card Var should get called upon by default. Isn’t this exactly the kind of shit VAR is supposed to be there for?

There will ofc be zero consequences for such a crap ref performance that ruined the game. He’ll get a pay on the back and a job well done comment from his manager no doubt

Time Up

Spuds good run reminds me of our 22 games unbeaten run. All with fluky results, some with shit performance.

Bob N16

IAT, not sure why having the best foreign refs wouldn’t be an improvement.

Are the refs in other leagues as overly-protected as they are in the PL? The lack of transparency when it comes to explaining their decisions is pathetic.

China1

Time up that is an absolutely horrible stat you shared and matches what we all saw – blatant bias from the ref

Kwame

Xhaka might be a good player in the eyes of Arteta, but the fact is that he has cost us too many points. How can he be an example to the youngsters with this record? If he’s not getting a red card, he is escaping one, else he is commiting a blunder that would cost the team dearly. Surely there are players out there who could be more reliable!

Samesong

Rich

I’m worried that Gabriel red puts him out of the Spurs game?

Yeah we are better than spurs but they also supercheats also. They will be looking for any type of contact in the box. We can’t afford to lose that game.

China1

Foreign refs cannot be worse than PL refs. There’s nothing to lose

Or can we have some championship refs come up instead?

DivineSherlock

China1

It wasnt a straight red , it was a second yellow . Still it shouldnt even be yellow , considering what Rodri did or Cancelo did or Dias did before.

alex cutter

“How the fuck was Gabriel’s a straight red????”

It wasn’t.

China1

Obviously besides the couple of low points we saw, overall I think we did really well today. Proud and happy with the team. Just xhaka’s game costing stupidity that has pissed me off as well as the BS reffing

Like to see Holjberg injured in the NLD.

Gabriel 1 game ban first leg vs Liverpool, he’ll be back for the Forest game next weekend

DivineSherlock

Samesong

Gabriel wont be out of the Spurs game, he will be out for League cup semifinal first leg.

Bob N16

Samesung, one game off for Gabriel I think, that can be the FA cup match against Forest.

Bob N16

I stand corrected…bottom line there are two cup games before NLD!

David Smith

Suspect that the more this team threaten the top 4 , the more of that type of officiating they will see. Wenger was well aware of what he was up against with the PGMOL, he called out the likes of Dean, Riley and others. His policy of generally blowing away weaker teams with goal blitzes before the refs could do anything about it helped keep him in the top four at least for years, even if he did falter against the better teams. and the odd Stoke away. Suspect this team may need to learn to do the same with… Read more »

Bob N16

China, I think I’m right in saying that if a ref ‘does well’ in the Championship then they get the call up to the PL. Still maintain bringing in foreign refs would break the Northern cabal that seems to exist.

Any measure that gets Mike Dean to never officiate another Arsenal game gets a massive thumbs up from me!

AFC Forever

Just back from the game. Once again the atmosphere in the stadium was incredible. Even after the game the fans were right behind the boys. We know that we have a real team in the making here and some brilliant young players.. We are now a well coached, organised & high energy team who just lack that game management experience. Make no mistake we will become a top team with a few additions but players like Gabriel have to learn to keep their heads when injustice rears its head. I was in the West Stand and we all had a… Read more »

Dear Pedro and all fellow Gooners Happy New Year. Amazingly, the game comes second for me today as I first of all have to apologise to Pedro and other posters on here who I may have caused unnecessary stress to over these past few months. Back in September I lost a dear friend to Covid. He contracted the virus back in early 2021 and had suffered considerably since that time, even though he had no underlying medical problems. Last year I also lost a good friend, again through Covid, so anyone who says it’s all a joke and a conspiracy,… Read more »

Wow! What a performance. I stand tall as an Arsenal faithful today. Did we lose? I didn’t take notice. Maybe the table will tell. But in my mind, my delusional mind, of cause, Arsenal won this game. From the tactics and game management, to the believe and mentality of the boys – we won. Not three points. But the spirit, the desire, the sheer doggedness, and mentality. We stood toe-to-tie with City. We got Pep agitated, confused, bemused, and on the edge of his seat. We pressed without fear. We got second balls. We played vertically. We were deliberate. Stuart Atwell turned out to be the same guy who was a VAR official and denied a red card in the Everton game when Tomiyasu was stamped on the face . Why am I not even surprised ?

So to make things worse Sours got a 96th minute winner.

AFC Forever: “Rodri was allowed to make a number of professional fouls without a card whereas we weren’t.” From SkySports: Rodri only made two fouls in the game. The first was on Martinelli right on the edge of the Man City penalty area, which went unpunished. The second was for a foul on Alexandre Lacazette, which was also escaped further punishment and actually led to Bukayo Saka being booked for his complaints to the referee. In fairness to the referee, it could be argued that neither of Rodri’s fouls, although they stopped promising Arsenal attacks, were bookings. However, Arsenal’s grievances… Read more »

Topside Northbank

Very frustrating. VAR inconsistent because of the ref’s poor initial calls.

Odegaard a pen nailed on. With Silva he was looking to go down, Xhaka once again gives a present be it a pen or a red card he simply makes so many poor decisions.

Gabriel two yellows in a matter of a min’s and the chance to win the game gone, we were well on top up until the City pen. So many good positives to take but until we cut out the self inflicted mistakes we will keep throwing points and games away.

IAT-Robbie

AFCF, Rodri’s fouls aren’t even “professional” fouls like Fernandinho’s. His fouls are more clumsy and badly-timed (he lacks agility just like Xhaka), which makes it incredible just how low his card count is. In 2.5 years in the EPL, Rodri has committed 113 fouls in the EPL and that’s not even accounting for “non-foul” calls like the collision with Martinelli. Astoundingly, with a 58% tackle success rate, he has only received 19 yellow cards and no reds (ever in his career). In comparison, with a 64% tackle success rate, Xhaka has committed 245 fouls, accumulated 46 yellow cards and 4… Read more »

Left testicle,
If you read my last (reasonable) comment that way, you’re not very good at reading.

By the way, as I predicted, Pedro is tweeting and retweeting some very positive stuff.

Why do you all need to be such angry little people?

Try looking on the bright side for once in your life.

So many good signs about this club.

Pierre

Watching the game today my initial thoughts as they happened were Keeper foul on Odegaard….that won’t be given Xhaka foul on Silva …that will be given Gabriel 2nd yellow …correct decision All 3 events were the consequence of poor decision making and poor touch by Arsenal players . Odegaard overran the ball with a poor first touch, meaning he was stretching for the ball as the keeper came out.. Xhaka deciding to pull silva’s shirt without knowing if he had cover behind was an action of an idiot. The officials do not fall for his stupid look of shock/horror on… Read more »

Nice recap Alumiasnomore

Except the Odegard penalty, not given.
See the replay again.
Goalkeeper comes on feet first to get the ball. Instead gets Odegard foot, which foot contact pushes the ball. So Odegard got the ball, not Ederson.
So definite penalty

DivineS, MacArthur ‘half volleyed’ Saka with full force, into the air. We all know it’s not just about intent, it’s about whether you are endangering a player- how he got away with that is anybody’s guess. Before the start of the game I was saying to my son and mates that we needed a bit of luck from the ref today. What a fucking shit day in terms of football. How the hell do we end up with nothing???? How is ours not a penalty but theirs is. The Martinelli miss was disappointing but he is still raw and will geyt better. Saka used to miss those 2 seasons ago as well.

Pierre

Underated coq
“When everyone complains about poor officiating, he sides with the referee”

I’m not sure I’m siding with the referee by saying it was impossible for him to tell if it was a foul on Odegaard.

Plus i said “In the 2nd half the ref seemed determined not to be pressured into giving Arsenal any 50/50 decisions, he was handing out cards to Arsenal whilst ignoring the city tackles.”…..not exactly siding with the ref is it , not in my world anyway

Time Up

Since Arteta took over, the most team with red cards by far is errrrrr Arsenal, sad states.

andy1886

AFCF – I’m also in the Upper West Stand and had a great view of the City pen. I wasn’t worried initially as it looked like a blatant dive (something City players did all game). Unfortunately Xhaka gives the ref the chance to give it, just dumb. Still not a pen to me but you can’t give them the opportunity to con the ref.

WengerEagle

More gutting losing that today than any match for a long time as we actually outplayed the best team in the country and deserved at least a point for our efforts.

Some baffling decisions, I had the Odegaard incident a clear pen and Gabriel’s sending off was incredibly harsh.

Martinelli’s miss was atrocious and it might have cost us points today but he was brilliant again, we have our future 9 here and it is exciting times.

Proud of the boys today. We can finish 4th, we have the talent for sure.

WengerEagle

Happy New Year to everyone on here by the way.

Anyone remember the game v Crystal Palace two years ago – the one with the Zhaka meltdown.

In that game Arsenal were denied a late winner by VAR. although PGMOL were never able to give the reason. The VAR official on that day and today Australian Jarrod Gillett,

Akinzo

What a nasty climax. Today’s match confirms that we are on the right trajectory. So much had been said on Artetas lack of acumen to take us to the top but except those still deluded we know something great is in the offing. Thank God Legrovers aren’t part of the management our great club. If they they were we’d been firm favorites for relegation. Everyday I keep feeling feeling left down by the level of moaning and sense of entitlements here. We just lost to arguably the most expensively assembled squads in the world and perhaps the best in club… Read more »

“Gabriel’s sending off was incredibly harsh.”

It was bs. Especially considering the first yellow was soft and a penalty had just been awarded to City.

Usually refs take a lenient approach to Second yellows. I’m not sure a I’ve ever seen something like today, it looked like the ref lost control of his emotions with the whole Var overturning decision fiasco

Bob N16

Time up, Luiz is no longer around, fingers crossed this is Xhaka’s last season. By taking those two out of the picture our red card count will get to acceptable levels. Gabriel has been outstanding so I don’t want to be too down on him.

Bob N16

Underrated, I wondered about the ref’s state of mind too. Maybe we should just make Gabriel captain so he has a greater justification to talk to the ref in a forceful way- he’s almost always the first player to approach the ref when there has been an incident. I haven’t seen the Gabriel second yellow but it was incredibly soon after the pen and then Martinelli’s miss. I assumed it was a professional foul on whoever but I get the impression there wasn’t much in it and that maybe it was the ref not calming down so soon after the… Read more »

Wenger Eagle,
Happy new year to you too. Have to say everytime I watch Declan Rice my heart breaks a little bit more. Now he’s almost certainly out of Arsenal’s reach aswell. The one that got away……twice.

Graham62

Pierre

Agree.

Yes, it was a penalty to MC.
Yes, it should have been a penalty to Arsenal. 100%.
Yes, Gabriel deserved to be sent off.
Yes, Xhaka was an idiot.
Yes, the referee lost it in the second half. MC players were getting away with murder.
We deserved a point.
VAR, because it is operated by incompetents, remains shite.

Listening to Peter Walton(ref watch) in the BT studio was embarrassing.

LoveSausage

Bob,

Couldn’t agree more. With Xhaka gone, 90% of the stupidity in this team goes out the door. I’m still pissed about the result but the underlying performance until the penalty and the red card is the best I’ve seen from us in 2-3 years. If the boys just focus on that and keep the spirits up, we should be clear favourites in the NLD.

Bob N16

Let’s not forget the ref virtually screened Martinelli just before he missed that golden chance.- another reason for the ref losing mental control just before the Gabriel booking, w*nker!

Sorry but Rodri’s tackle was dangerous. Both feet off the ground sliding in at pace, know way was he in control of that tackle. I’ve seen other players sent off for the same thing . Yes his feet were low they weren’t raised, but the way he threw himself in was reckless. To not even get a foul is shocking

Graham62

I thought the referee blocked Martinelli’s vision slightly prior to him shooting over.

Did anyone else notice this?

AFC Forever

Andy

Yes you could clearly see Silva dived. When I got home I watched it and it’s obvious he’s on his way down before the tug. As for the Odegaard penalty, I wasn’t sure at the time but they have proved it was a penalty by replays. What annoys me is the fact the bloke operating VAR is allowed to do so inconsistently without any accountability.

Anyway, great atmosphere again and the fans behaviour didn’t feel like we had lost. We’ll play a lot worse than that and win

Samesong

Sorry for you loss Graham.

Almuniasaynomore

Graham 62,
I’m sorry for the hardships you went through. Your thoughts often entertained me during the year. It was obvious sometimes you were blowing off steam but for what it’s worth I often agreed with your sentiments.

Bob N16

LoveS, at half time we were saying that even if we lose we have just witnessed a half of football that should give us great heart into the future.

As it was circumstances, some of which was down to us shooting ourselves in the foot,, meant that we did indeed lose but not before holding out until injury time. That in it’s way was almost as equally heart warming.

The response of the crowd at the end will not be lost on the players.

Head up boys, onwards and upwards!

Almuniasaynomore

S Asoa,
My take on the Ode penalty is that if he plays for utd, pool, chelski he gets it. However I would prefer if tackles like that were still allowed. Those days are long gone however I fear.

AFC Forever

TYAGN

This out of control and endangering an opponent seems selective. Tomiyasu had his face stood on at Everton, Saka was volleyed out of the game by McArthur and Rodri was lucky not to injure Martinelli. Not sure any of us understand the rules anymore, no wonder PGMOL don’t.

andy1886

Silva got a lot of abuse after the pen, quite rightly. Another player who if he weren’t at City would struggle to be so influential. He certainly wouldn’t get the calls and protection he does at AFC.

Also I may be going blind, but I’m pretty sure that Ramsdale, not Gabriel, scuffed up the penalty spot.

Bob N16

Could be wrong but it looks like Gabriel was booked after he got pushed into the back of the ref by a City player.

Aaron

Best first 50 minutes of futbol I have seen from Arsenal against a top club in over 2 years! vaR is $h*te, and will always be, until a panel makes decisions, if the events in consideration are viewed in real time, not a solitary frame, from 3 crappy camera angles, which magnifies any contact, whether it physically changed the outcome or not (how can it even be measured) will anything change on that front. puP is a smug bastard! Edouard snatching at everything.

Who was it that said he was better than Nketiah?

Almuniasaynomore

S Asoa,
We actually got a penalty like that v West ham when the player got some of the ball but was said not to be in control and actually got sent off for a 2nd yellow. Those are the tackles I don’t like to see called fouls,I’m old fashioned, if you win the ball first it shouldn’t be a foul though I know there are exceptions when some players use the proximity of the ball to hurt an opponent but the ref should be able to use his discretion there.

AFC Forever

Was Gabriel booked for dissent or scuffing up the penalty spot?

Graham62

I think clubs should now be taking a firm stance against the way the VAR system is operated.

Consistency please.

That’s all we ask.

andy1886

Lots of reports saying it was for scuffing up the penalty spot but I think that’s wrong and it was for dissent.

AFC Forever

Almunia

Ederson took Odegaards foot before the ball. Anywhere on the pitch that’s a foul. The debate is why the Aussie doing VAR chose not to refer, not whether it was a penalty or not because it was. We will never know if it affected the result. However, for the integrity of the game these inconsistencies have to end.

AFC Forever

Andy

The radio said scuffing. No idea because I assumed it was dissent like you. We don’t get a lot of leeway.

@Almuniasaynomore

And soufec ( or whatever his name is) had more control than Rodri did with his challenge. How that wasn’t at the bare minimum a foul, baffles me

Bob N16

I wonder whether the ref took exception to him pushing into him, caused by a City player charging into Gabriel. I’m guessing but Gabriel had spoken to the ref but he might not have taken it any further if he hadn’t felt that push! We’ll never know due to the ridiculous protection that the ref’s get not having to explain their decisions.

Nigel Tufnel

On Twitter now… seeing real fans reposting vids… like that fvkker flying in on Martinelli like a freight train.

What did we get for that? Nothing.

The close ups of Ederson getting all of Ødegaards foot, and nothing of the ball… but the VAR guy didn’t even take a close look at that.

Honestly, it’s not even like Øde was diving theatrically like on Xhakas penalty.
Most gooners on Twitter (which is generally a cesspool of humanity) are more intelligent than a good percentage here. Sorry Pedro.

Almuniasaynomore

Afc,
I genuinely didn’t come to that conclusion having watched it several times, though I’m obviously in the minority reading the comments. Will check it out on motd again later but I thought he kicked ball and foot at the same time. The use of var for one incident and not the other is indisputably inexplicable. But its not just us. Check out the lloris tackle late in the Watford game tonight. Var never intervened. Bizarre stuff.

Almuniasaynomore

The replays clearly showed Ederson took out Ode’s foot, not the ball. It was a pen but the argument made by DAZN commentary was that it may not have been a clear and obvious error. That is rubbish. In real time it would be tough to call but VAR should have had him go to the replay monitor. Proud of the boys though. They were the better team and this should help them grow together

Bob N16

Emerson’s was as ‘clear and obvious’ as Xhaka’s in my opinion.

Almuniasaynomore

Yeah, there’s clips of the Odegaard ‘pen’ on YouTube, Brownie has the right of it, there was enough evidence for var to ask the ref to go to the monitor. Given the fact that I watched the replays and still got it wrong would it be worth my while applying for a job with the PGMOL?
