ARSENAL DELIVER UNFESTIVE SPANKING TO SUNDERLAND

by .

OH MY WORD THAT WAS PURE JOY!

Mikel Arteta and his band of merry men beat up a team of League One upstarts by torturing them for the best part of 90 minutes.

Martin Odegaard showed all the Christmas spirit of a Grinch, teasing and torturing a team he knew he could bully.

Eddie Nketiah channelled his inner Scrooge by stealing from the poor to give to the rich!

Nicolas Pepe was like the burglars in Home Alone, except he wasn’t trying to take elite goods from a rich New York estate, he was stealing careers, time, and space from an embattled blonde northern child on the left side of defence.

Let’s be honest, Arsenal FC offered up very little festive spirit to the Mackems yesterday, and my oh my, was it an absolute feast of the eyes and belly.

Ok… I’ve run out of average festive metaphors.

Overall, that performance last night is what you get when the cogs at a football club are all working together.

The first team players you’ve pulled down to slum it in the League Cup all play like they’re dissecting a big team.

The peripheral players you give some minutes all put in a shift like they might have a chance at the Boxing Day game.

The young kids that earn a moment to shine all try to shine.

It hasn’t always been like that over the past two years. You weren’t guaranteed that David Luiz would bother his backside in a game like that if called upon, he was above it. You didn’t know if players like Saed and Mustafi would be offended that League Cup was their lot in life. You had no idea how that would affect the kids.

Not last night. The overall quality was very League Cup. That’s a team of players that haven’t had the gift of minutes this season. But all I was looking for was how they grew with the game, how they stuck to the core principles of the first team, and how hard they fought.

Nico was probably the prime example of a player that was rusty but worked himself into the ground and delivered. The man delivers, just like the Post Office. It might not always be what you like, but he’ll always have his name on a parcel by the end of a game. His game is deeply frustrating, Arteta was shouting at him, Ben White was shouting at him… then he rolled up with a goal and two assists. He’s such a nearly player.

The big story of the night is how ridiculous Arsenal fans are with the hyping of players we’ve ‘discovered.’  Charlie Patino is the most 18-year-old player I’ve ever seen. Tall, extremely youthful, and very normal looking… like he’d help you set up your gran’s phone in Carphone Warehouse normal… but we’ve seen the videos. We’ve seen Jack Wilshere call him immense. We have been willing him on for a long time. He landed his debut as sub number 4, then he popped into the box, stealing a 4th goal from Eddie with a simple tap in.

WHAT A MOMENT, HE IS A GOD, WE WERE RIGHT

I think it’s pretty much football lore that the best players score on their debuts. It seems we might have a gem. Arteta said he was keen to cook him slowly. Which is kind of menacing, but also very on-point with my Christmas messaging. It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes to see him more regularly. Will he take a loan? Will he hang about for Europe next year? Who knows, but one thing is for sure, there’s likely a big future ahead for him. Hale-End does it again.

Our obsession with newness might take away from the bigger story.

Eddie looked very good.

I’m worried we might have some Emi-Regrets™ with this one if he leaves on a free transfer. Say what you will about how he’s dealt with his chances in the past, this season, right from preseason, he’s been delivering when given minutes. He looks like he has his manpower, the confidence is there, and no one in the men’s squad knows where the goal is like him. He has that fox in the box gene great players like David Trezeguet had. His overall play is also improving, just look at the chances he created against Everton. Why couldn’t he become our Divock Origi?

Remember, he’s 22 years old. A child in the grand scheme of Premier League strikers. I wonder if there’s a way back? Can he do it in the league? Either way, congrats Eddie, you can only ruin the Christmas of the team you are put in front of, you superstar Scrooge.

It’s worth talking about Folarin Balogun because he was given his debut on the left. We’ve all been clamouring for him. He had his chance last night and he didn’t hit the heights. For me, he was trying to force the game. He snatched at shots, made greedy decisions, and nothing really fell for him. Again, we have to remind ourselves that he’s 20 years old, he’s never been on loan, and raw talent takes time to mature. He’s not strong enough for Premier League, yet. As Matt said on the podcast, he needs a loan up north, in a very cold place, with a manager that is going to knock him into shape. I’d send him to a place that doesn’t have internet. He has a lot of work to do, but that’s elite football. Huddersfield made ESR, Millwall made Kane, Palace made Ashley C, Newport and Leeds made Ben white. No one is beneath a loan move and Folarin needs one. That is no shame, it’s just part of elite player development, and he is going to be elite.

As part of a bigger picture here, it’s a bit of a fan habit to assume every young player is ready now. Gabi is back in the side, he’s ripping it up, and instead of people acknowledging Arteta and his team has done a good job shaping a player that had been terrible for 6 months… people make statements like ‘I SAID HE WAS READY IN JANUARY 2020.’ This is average fan chat. If you hold the idea that Arteta needs to be a top 4 manager in your head, you can’t insist he rolls out with a teenage forward line just to satisfy your amateur view a good comp video is better evidence than working with a player every day. No manager keeps a ready player hidden away for months. If you want the club to progress young players / move up the table, you have to be prepared to wait for the players to be ready. How many young players have Arsenal brought through now? Enough for there not to be a huge debate every time someone is loaned or benched.

The game wasn’t all Christmas lights and fairy dust. We did concede a goal our starting 11 might have dealt with. Ben White isn’t as strong next to Rob Holding, football is about partnerships, and he doesn’t have a good one there yet. Bernd Leno isn’t built for this current system, this January, he’s going to have to find pastures new because he’s not ever making it back to our starting 11. I hope the scouts at Arsenal have some ideas for a back-up keeper, because he’s not the one. Cedric landed an assist, but the gulf between him and Tomi is absolutely huge, and we really would be in trouble if the injury to Tomi is serious. A big part of making it to the Champions League will be how we fill out the backup players because we’re very thin in some very key positions.

Back to the game. Martin Odegaard is really pouring cold water on all the bitchy Arsenal fans that wrote him off earlier in the season. What a dreamboat he is. He showed up to the league cup, led by example, pulled strings like a demon, and absolutely punished Sunderland for giving him space over and over again. He has it all… we’re starting to see the class player Madrid thought they were getting. His confidence is there now, he knows the fans, the team, and his role. I am VERY excited to see what we’ve unlocked. Again, he’s just 22 years old.

I talk about it in the podcast, but as a fanbase, can we just be a bit more like the fans inside the ground? Are we over the hurt of the past decade? Can we trust the club and the decisions a bit more and stop with the mean behaviour? Willian quit because Arsenal fans were horrible to him. He came in on a cloud of very dodgy decision making, so I don’t feel totally sorry for him, but that is a grown man quitting because he felt bullied. Is that Arsenal? I don’t think so. The fact that Martin Odegaard had to quit social media because of scummy behaviour online should be a lesson to us all. These guys are human, our actions have consequences, and we shouldn’t tolerate fans that behave like this. They are not us. They are harmful. It has to stop.

Final shoutout to the IRL fans that made it down to the stadium. It had a bit of a preseason vibe. Loads of people going to the game for the first time, lots of youthful faces, even a weird phone light thing that looked like a modern version of the Mexican wave. Fuck anyone that criticises people that show up for games that are usually hard to shift against lowly opponents. We could hear the noise, the players reacted to it, you are stars.

Right, that’s me done. Tune into a festive podcast. Ignore my terrible voice. Just enjoy us all lavishing praise on the team for an hour. We had a lot of fun.

Great draw

Time Up

Liverpool play the 3rd in the league cup. We’ve a chance now our players without European football should be fresher.

Let the Spud and Chaves slag it out.

My prediction Arsenals v Spud final

Saladin

Fuck off man, just fuck off. Could have been lousy ass Leicester we played in the semis lol

Zacharse

Home bb. Wish i could be there

AFC Forever

They say 1st leg is on Monday 3rd Jan but we have Man City on Saturday 1st in the PL.

Time Up

Samesong

No way we beat Liverpool. Jota to screw us.

Dissenter

Is the semi final a one leg affair or is it still home and away?

Always hated this moose cup, one of the Wenger carry overs.

AFC Forever

Probably move us to Wednesday 5th. FA Cup following Sunday at Forest. Great start to the New Year.

Mr Serge

It’s two legs although they are talking about doing it

AFC Forever

Dissenter, two legs. First two weeks of Jan.

AFC Forever

They will change to one leg if China Virus shows signs of escalating. Let’s hope not, football is so much better as it is!

Time Up

Liverpool in the league cup easer than the Foxes.

The Foxes will put out stronger team due to being out of Europe.

Dissenter

Liverpool are beatable in a one-off game, not sure about over two legs.

AFC Forever

Zacharse.

Yes brilliant. I will get to go to either the City or Liverpool game. What a tough start to 2022 though and a chance to see some great players. I personally prefer games under lights, something about it despite the long, dark journey home…! I wish I could afford a chauffeur but the butler takes all my cash..

AFC Forever

Dissenter

Yep, the Anfield factor needs to be considered. That place is seriously hostile!

Arteta won’t be judged based on the moose cup

Graham

How did you forget Steve Bull?!!!

salparadisenyc

Was hoping to put Spurs onto the path of heartache but Liverpool will be fun. They look shaky at the moment, notably without VVD who wont be risked in this tie. Hope Chelsea do the right thing and meet us in the finale.

AFC Forever

Sal

It’s amazing what a difference VVD makes to that Liverpool team. I’d like to play in midfield with him behind me, just so calm & composed. £75m well spent.

englandsbest

Of course we can overcome Liverpool over two legs.

There are so many unknowns, unexpected variations – covid, other matches, signings, injuries, etc – anything can happen.

bacaryisgod

Sorry Graham-i just saw your follow-up!

Well, certainly didn’t want Liverpool but it brings back memories of being a kid listening to 3 F.A Cup Semi-Final replays against Liverpool in 1979-80. We won that 3rd replay but the team was so exhausted we ended up losing in both the F.A Cup final to West Ham and the Cup-Winners Cup Final to Valencia.

Still, beating that Liverpool team with Dalglish, Souness, Hansen etc was a great achievement.

AFC Forever

Bacary,

The Brian Talbot winning header after Ray Kennedy slipped in the penalty area. Kennedy, RIP, was aiming to be the first player to win the double with two different teams. Those pit he’s were so heavy in those days, I think it caught up with us in the Final.

Topside Northbank

Great draw for us Liverpool be it over 1 or 2 legs.

They always play a weakened team in the league cup and will have to anyway Keita, Mane and Salah will be at the ACON.

We are missing a couple ACON but Liverpool also have Europe and a title chase it’s the best draw for us.

Topside Northbank

With Chelsea coming out at home to Tottenham, no way Levy will want 1 leg.

Away from home plus the £ of a home semi final.

Pierre

For excitement and entertainment, the league cup delivers for me in many ways.

domestic Cup football at night is something special, whether it is the league cup or fa cup..
Only fans who have never experienced live cup football at night belittle the competitions.

The semi finals v Liverpool being back great memories for me, I went to the epic semi when Talbot headed the winner up our end, then saw us lose at Wembley to West ham and finally went to the crappy Heysel stadium in Belgium when we lost on pens to Valencia.

Pierre

Tottenham league cup 2nd leg , white Hart lane, 1968 I think , John Radford last minute winner , header top corner up the park lane end , win 2-1 on aggregate , great memories.

Off to Wembley , lost to 3rd division Swindon in the final.

Nigel Tufnel

Pierre…. You describe a really exciting vision for our young, developing front 4-5 … energetic and dangerous will make us a handful, especially if we can shore up central midfield. Also I like the appreciation of Ødegaard there. Over the coming years, there’s going to be some great highlight reels of him feeding and scoring for us. He put through an incredible ball. Weighted to perfection for Pepe(?) on the right to run onto. The ball almost stopped right when the corner was turned. Led to a goal or great chance. Midwest.. I looked at some stuff on Jovic. If… Read more »

Liverpool will be seriously weakened for Caribo Cup. Both Salah and Mane will be missing
since they will be competing in Africa Cup. That will be a huge hole in their team.

The only player from our starting eleven who will be missing is Partey.

Pierre

Nigel
yes, the pre assist from Odegaard was very good

For me, the pre assist is very underrated, very often more important than the assist.
I have a particular fondness for the ball inside the full back as it can take the whole defence out of the equation, it is a pass that has to be timed perfectly with perfect weight..

MidwestGun

Hmm well Pool wasnt the best draw…. But it will be entertaining. Klopp v Teta …especially given the throw down last time.

Must watch tv. I think we can beat them but it will be a serious challenge over 2 legs. Definitely if we win this Cup you can’t say it was a fluke. Taking on the best. Happy for the Young Guns to get this opportunity. Hopefuly everyone will be fit at that time. Also, I would like to see Ramsdale in goal, Just sayin.

rollen

Four good games in Smith Row, can’t complain.

AFC Forever

Pierre, totally agree. I’m not a lover of the assist stars because, like all stats, they are often misleading. As you say, that pre-assist in build up play is often the most important pass. I think once the team really gels we will see more of the Odegaard influence. & those perfectly weighted passes. That one inside the full back was stunning. You have to have people on the same wavelength knowing when & where to make runs. We saw that with peak Ozil with Alexis & co. But that will come as the squad develop together.

Gonsterous

Pool is a great draw in the league cup. We know arteta will field a strong team, and we know klopp has other priorities.

We could win the semis and face Chelsea in the final.

Would be nice to be in a final again, and maybe arteta can deliver us a first league cup

Leedsgunner

Comparison to Emi Martinez with letting Eddie Nketiah go is a very apt exercise. Why did Emi leave? He left because he thought he was worthy of wearing the no.1 shirt somewhere else. For a little while, it seemed like a poor move from us, letting him go and Arteta and Edu were heavily criticised for it. Yet, how did they respond to the criticism? They realised that Leno wasn’t good enough to do what Arteta wanted and they signed someone better after a lot of searching and scouting. How good has Ramsdale been? He has been, I would argue,… Read more »

Good chance the semis will be in empty stadiums. As good as the crowd at Ashburton has been – anfield is mental.

Advantage Arsenal.

Leedsgunner

Half point, Player of the season contenders? In no particular order…

A. Ramsdale
T. Tomiyasu
G. Magalhães
E. Smith Rowe

Johnno

Ramsdale for me Leeds. He’s been great – but also reminds us that football is a team game – it requires teamwork, positivity, guts and character. It isn’t just step overs, neck tattoos and hair gel.

He has brought Victory Through Harmony

See what I did there ?

Leedsgunner

“Half point, Player of the season contenders? In no particular order…”

If they continue with their recent good form?

Lacazette
Odegaard
Martinelli

Like I said, this year is a very strong field for player of the season…

💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Leedsgunner

“ He has brought Victory Through Harmony…”

Very good. 😂

zacharse

so fiorentina have bought a striker form lille. clearly a vlahovic replacement.

China1

Leeds I fully agree with your list of contenders

Ramsdale has been the overall best
Gabriel has been excellent but also exceptionally consistent
ESR has been a creative goal scoring heartbeat of our attack
Tomi has been really good but also gets extra credit for being so consistently good fresh off the boat

China1

I don’t think laca martinelli or ode fall into the same category as none of them have been as consistently influential or involved from the start of the season (whether or not through any fault of their own)

But yeah if they play really well until the end of the season they’ll put themselves in contention

Steveyg87

If we lose Partey and Mo to afcon, would it be such a bad move to string our boy jack in on a half season pay as you play contract? Im sure he would be up for it

China1

Liverpool are demonstrably better than us but I doubt klopp will risk more than 5 or 6 first teamers for the league cup so we should definitely have a solid chance I’d love us to win the league cup. Yea it’s secondary but what better way to set up a top 4 finish and get these young and new players absolutely buzzing than to be lifting silverware before heading into the final stretch Give them that taste. It’s different from last time we won the cup because it didn’t feel like that team was building towards anything. We actively wanted… Read more »

China1

Honestly I’d rather we won the league cup and came 5th than won nothing and came 4th anyway

But hey let’s do both

China1

Also winning trophies is a habit. We all saw what happened when in the 2010s we were great but couldn’t get over the finish line.

The mental weakness that kicks in and the doubts that come with always falling short. It’s the absolute philosophy of Spurs and it’s useless and very damaging.

Much better to be a team that’s lifting smaller silverware frequently than to win nothing but occasionally brag that you competed for big ones.

Habesha Gooner

Drawing liverpool isn’t great if we are thinking about going to Wembley. But earning a trophy always brings that much more belief in players. We have wanted to draw weaker teams now for a decade atleast. And that shows the lack of trust in our team to come out on top if Arsenal drew a half decent team. We need to test our young players and playing Liverpool is the right way to go about it. If we win and go on to win the final, then our players will eventually believe they can compete for the title.

DivineSherlock

Liverpool dont need the fixture pile up , I think they are doable over two legs , if we keep our cool . Plus they’ll be missing Keita, Salah , Mane . And besides we did beat them last year in the same competition. I’ll be disappointed if we didnt make the final. North London Derby in the final incoming.

Terraloon

I have just watched the highlights from the Brentford v Chelsea tie. What was 100% evident was the impact that Chelsea had once they introduced 5 substitutes. Not so much the number but the combined quality that they were able to add from their bench. The reason I mention is that it seems that there is another PL meeting today and it’s highly likely that the 5 sub rule will be reintroduced to the PL . There seems to be so much pressure from the PFA and indeed certain head coaches that in one those squads with real depth in… Read more »

Eddie found his level against Sunderland, always will be a lower league player at best, easy to see when you watch him play.

The Bard

Pierre all these stats need taking with a pinch of salt. Elnenys pass completion rate must be high but he hardly even passes forward. The only stat of relevance is win/lose ratio.

Terraloon

Tee 100% with you on that Eddie isn’t PL , well not top half PL posters on here really need to get a realistic take on the extent or more to the point the limit of his abilities Sunderland really aren’t the sort of team to use as any sort of barometer they are in effect a third tier team Whois seems didn’t even go full strength . Sunderlands first team play in the EFL trophy a trophy that Arsenals under 21s play in . Ok you can only beat teams that are in front of you but I really… Read more »

On the point of the EFL trophy I don’t know if many realise but Arsenal u21 have been drawn to play Chelsea u21 in the next round game to be played on 4 January

Graham62

I beg to differ in regards Nketiah.

I think he’ll score goals at the highest level based on his predatory instincts close to goal.

Yesterday I highlighted Dean Windass, who scored goals for teams that didn’t create too many chances. Looking at him you’d think how the hell can he move let alone score goals. He knew where the goal was though.

Eddie looks so much stronger now and I’m convinced that given the chance he can be a major asset for Arsenal Football Club.

Bradybunch

It would be timely to give Eddie a run in the PL now ,so that these impressions we have can have a bit of meat. I’m not sure MA is ready to change his current formula tho. But 2 LC games against Liverpool . There’s Eddie’s chance to win him/ us over.
I wish he’d go a bit more berserk, like Wrighty, when he scores .

Rich

China

Completely agree, hypothetically I’d rather finish 5th and win the league cup, than finish 4th and got trophy-less

I get the argument about financials and attracting a better caliber of player, but you can’t beat winning a trophy

Think we’d also have a better chance of winning the Europa next season, than we would the CL

We’ve been to the final and 2 x semis, be a brilliant platform to win the Europa next season after a League Cup this season

Karsa

Who would you drop to accomodate Eddie?

Bradybunch

To see Eddie perform in the position he would be kept on as,…it’s got to be Laca, in the current formation. And I don’t fancy the current shape being changed to accommodate both up front..

Emiratesstroller

Bard

Elneny is totally predictable. If you want to hold onto the ball with short square and back passes he is the right player to do this.

However, the problem with this player is that he is incredibly slow in recovery and is easily
passed by a mobile opposition midfield.

Hopefully he will leave the club and be replaced in squad at end of his contract this summer
if not earlier.

Northbanker

I’d still like to see

Smithy – Marti- Saka

Ode

as the attacking line up. No place for Laca or Eddie other than on bench

Bradybunch

Said similar yesterday also. Too slow and safe also during playing out the back. Allows the press to move in due to his predictable ‘safe ‘ passes, and lacks the vision to pick the outball required to make the press think twice.
Big Mo, lovely man I’m sure, but time is up.

Bradybunch

That’s fair NB. I’m not calling for Eddie to start in PL. Just musing on how to answer the questions remaining about his potential before we let him go for shit.

Leedsgunner

If Eddie does well in the semi finals of the League Cup to convince Brighton or Crystal Palace or West Ham to pay £25m instead of £10m, I’ll be happy.

If it will enable us to grab someone like Isak, Jovic, En Nesyri or Jonathan David this will make us stronger.

Ideally I would love him to stay but failing that if we receive a good sum I’m not going to be too disappointed since we have Balogun coming through.

Terraloon

Rich

We’ve been to the final and 2 x semis, be a brilliant platform to win the Europa next season after a League Cup this season

Winning the League / Carabo Cup doesn’t give you an EL berth.

Yep finishing 5th would as would possibly finishing 6th would but the second EL berth is allocated initially to the FA Cup winners

Terraloon

Leeds

Would be staggered if anyone was going to pay anywhere close to the sort of numbers you suggest for Eddie.

If, and a big if, he leaves in the January window then my estimate is it will be for around £5 million.

The likelihood is , should he not sign a new contract, that he will go to the likes of Brighton really aren’t going to spend big on him in January nor would it be in the players interest to sign now when in a matter of half a season he will leave for compensation

Karsa

Liverpool and Wolves games postponed. That will give Wolves a massive advantage against us.

Karsa

Hopefully Wolves won’t have enough fit players for next Tuesday’s game.

Bob N16

Wolves going to be fresh for our game on 28th, now their Boxing Day called off!

Dissenter

‘ Wolves going to be fresh for our game on 28th, now their Boxing Day called off’

That’s is what I feared.
Once you cancel one game in that chain of two goes on Dec 26 and 28, cancel ALL the other games on that day.

There’s such a thing as anti-competition

Bob N16

Let’s hope Wolves have a limited covid outbreak that takes out say 4 first teamers to balance things out!

Halt

“I think I’ve seen enough of Edu and Arteta’s vision to trust they can get this call right too, especially if they can sell Eddie for a good sum.” It is interesting to see how much the fan mood can swing from one end to another, I think your having a bit too much confidence in Arteta and Edu to be honest. Undoubtly they did great business this summer, and they did subpar business the previous summer. As for Eddie isn’t his contract expiring this year anyways? Whose going to pay to get him this winter, when they can get… Read more »
