AUBA DROPPED AND NO ONE MISSED HIM

by .

I attended my first game since football returned yesterday and it was GOOD to be back.

It rained. It was cold. The opening 20 minutes were dreadful.

Then things started to get very fun.

My big takeaway was the fans are all very much with the team. The temptation on a very cold day is to moan and groan when things are going badly and that didn’t happen. It’s all well and good being with the team when they are doing well, but it’s more needed when they’re not.

The start of the game felt very Everton. Granit Xhaka was having a very torrid time of it. Odegaard couldn’t find his range. They both gave the ball away, and didn’t look at the races. It was clear that Southampton were there to rattle us early on to see if they could capitalise on our shakiness.

The team didn’t panic though, they worked their way back into the game, then made it count with some precision passing. The team had heart, I was looking for that are the mental fragility on show in the week.

Aaron Ramsdale looks good on TV, but it is a different experience when you see him do his thing in real life. He’s a massive character, his confidence really does radiate… he’s almost a bit of a troll how he sets up out the back. The Southampton players were getting a little bit annoyed with him, they wanted to catch him out, but his passing is so accurate and breathtaking, they just couldn’t.

Our first goal came from one of our classic moves out of the back. Everyone connected well, then Saka drove into the Southampton box, looked up to see Lacazette there, threaded him in, then let the Frenchman one-touch finish into the top corner. Masterful stuff.

The second goal was scruffy. Tomiyasu looped a big ball to the back post. KT headed his second attempt at a cross hopefully at the front post, Odegaard was there to grab our second and his third in three games. Does anyone still think he’s shit?

We entered halftime with 3 shots and 2 goals. A nice change of pace to be so efficient, but we really needed to open up our game in the second half and show the home fans that the Everton game was an aberration, not the start of a shite attacking run of form.

That happened.  The second half was loads of fun. We had 12 shots, 3 on target, 2 hit the post, plus a goal that was disallowed. The football was fun, it had variety, we even played through the middle on occasion. The players ate up the horrible weather. Everyone in the ground was bouncing.

Our setpiece game was on fire. Gabriel was a total monster in the box. He had one goal declared offside, but he came roaring back to score a little later, celebrating the news of a baby on the way. Martinelli put a peach of a cross into the mixer, no one was beating the Brazilian to it. Isn’t it nice to have a centre back that can do John Terry like things from corners? All our players that take corners now beat the front post and the movement from everyone is so much more positive.

We had two ‘nearly’ goals of the season. One from Saka making some magic on the edge of the box only to hit the post with an innovative striker from under his feet. The other was Martinelli firing at the back post and striking it.

Our defensive game still needs sharpening. Southampton managed to get 6 shots on target, which is pretty high for an average team away from home. Aaron Ramsdale has to do a little too much work in most games this season. Now, what I will say is I do think it’s sustainable for him to keep making those saves. That’s the point of him. It’s why we paid so much. He’s an absolutely top-class keeper that will be knocking on the door of world-class before long. The issue is when we play better finishers, those clean-sheets don’t happen. The struggle Arteta is battling is that when we open up attack wise, we open up at the back.

I do love that our players are so interactive with the home crowd. Martinelli, Odegaard and Saka are all very engaged with the supporters. They were geeing us up to make some noise. I love that. Patrick Vieira used to do that back in the day and we responded to it. These youngsters all have big personalities, it’s nice to feel that in the ground.

Did anyone out there miss Auba? No.

I’m always shocked to read the cold sludge takes when a player is dropped. He broke the rules, the manager dropped him, he had to be honest about why that was because Arsenal Twitter makes up stories if the club feeds us innuendo.

It is not the job of Arteta to coddle badly behaved stars.

It is not the job of Arteta to shield players like Auba with fake stories if he’s disrupting the squad.

It is never acceptable to create a dual structure of rules: One rule for him, one rule for everyone else.

He’s not giving us performances, he’s being emotional in training, now he’s breaking club rules.

Are we at the point now where it’s time for a new captain?

The biggest criticism of Arteta for me is that he gave Auba so long to sort himself out. Where has it got us? Nowhere. It’s clear the player has dropped a level, it’s clear he can’t be the striker we need for this system, now it’s clear he can’t function as the leader we need him to be.

I keep seeing fans using the Nagelsmann comment on management being 70% about emotional intelligence. I have to tell you people, emotional intelligence in football management doesn’t mean ‘let Auba do what he likes.’ There isn’t an elite manager in the game that would let Auba get away with the things he’s been up to.

The absolute positive is the team didn’t need him. Others stepped up and took the lead. I’m not sure there was anyone in that ground bothered he wasn’t in the starting line-up and that is very telling.

Martin Odegaard is starting to find his way. I thought he was fantastic yesterday. He’s scored 3 goals in 3 games. His movement off the ball is getting better and better. His passing is opening up games. The early season criticism of him was very unfair. He’s only 22 years old, there’s so much more to come from him.

I also want to give a shoutout to Martinelli. He’s been so good at waiting for his moment, now he’s owning it. He was very good yesterday, he never gives up, and his really trying to focus his game on finding the balance between Bang-Bang and a player that can play with a bit more thought and control.

Beating Southampton for me was expected. Now we have to really make a difference to our season by taking down West Ham on Wednesday. That will be a real test of character, they’ve been magnificent against bigger teams this season, they have been extremely consistent, and they’ll do damage if we’re as open as we have been this past month.

Still, one step at a time, win that game, which is a 6 pointer, and we’re right back where we need to be for the season.

Let’s see what the team has got.

Podcast will be landing a little bit later.

P.S. The most majestic thing I’ve seen at The Emirates was Bob Holding rolling onto the pitch with a full head of hair. Receding men around the world rejoiced… ANYTHING is possible if you have enough money. Such a touching thought heading into Christmas.

I understand what you’re saying Charlie that opinions can change as a player or club improves throughout the season(s). It’s a valid point. Ramsdale I knew nothing about, so didn’t comment other than the obvious re his high goals against count. My comment was to wait and see. Nothing definitive said about the keeper. Ditto Tomi and I was waxing lyrical for his NLD performance. Tomi dipped a couple of games that made me wonder about him, but since then he’s been our best purchase along wot Ramsdale. I generally make decisions after watching a player for a while and… Read more »

Pedro if that was you on the Frednerk, then I’ll take the L on that one as you got me triggered. I fell for it hook line and sinker.

I wondered for a while but it was the racist angle calling China a Chin that you wouldn’t use a racist tone in a wind up.

I’ve aimed enough at you, Pedro, so well played if it was you.

You have so many aliases that it’s hard to keep up with. If you get to Don’s level, you might want to seek professional help.

Just saying.

Bertie Mee with the killer post re Xhaka.

What makes me (sadly) chuckle is that Xhaka was loathed since day 1 ever since he’s been her once it was figured that he was too slow for the EPL.

But…. for some veey mysterious reason (not helped by his excellent propensity to convincingly suck up to every manager) he is still at the Arsenal plying his trade.

He really needs to be sold so that we can finally get someone more mobile to finally take his place.

TheLegendaryDB10

What makes me (sadly) chuckle is that Xhaka was loathed since day 1 ever since he’s been her once it was figured that he was too slow for the EPL.

Remove “he’s been her once” to make sense of that sentence.

TheLegendaryDB10

How on earth Xhaka has been our MF for so long remains a total mystery.

He is the one player who has been very consistent with our decline in MF yet no one at the club has recognised this as him being a problem. This is beyond worrying.

Tony

The irony here DB10 is that Wenger preferred the more expensive Xhaka to Kante.

Guys, we have to grow up and not pretend to be big time business moguls. Ben White : “I think he’s good but not for 50 mil” . 2 sides … one really wants something the other has. One has no obligation to sell at all. Good luck.. go do the negotiating. We wanted him. I’m glad we got him. Now: “I wanted to extend Auba but not on such big salary, for 3 years”. I admit, we all, myself included… are a bunch of clowns blogging, and most of us will never lead a complex multi-million £ contract negotiation.… Read more »

I wasn’t sure about Auba’s extension so I used the old saying “if in doubt, leave it out” that has served me well over the decades.

Where I have a serious problem is not having non-negotiable caveats in the contract. This isn’t the first time Auba has flagrantly breached MA’s rules or other senior players.

I feel we are weak in contract negotiations and always have been, hence Ozil, Willian (did the decent thing) Sanches, Ramsey, Auba, Laca and the list goes on.

How many millions lost?

TheLegendaryDB10

‘re Auba Let’s be honest…. we were all happy that he was re-signed after that fantastic season . I certainly was happy he had resigned. He was our most prolific goal scorer and in a sense a “winning leader. This was all during the very early stages of the team rebuild and a decision had to be made: deal with the massive team issues or get a replacement goal scorer for someone, who, at that point in time, was goal scoring. So re-signing him made sense as he was the least of our issues. The current Ozilesque situation is unfortunate… Read more »

Tony

Define ‘we all’, DB10? I agree many did, but equally many didn’t citing age and motivation and being wary of the Ozil situation, at a time TW money was tight to our rebuilding needs. However, what has me wondering is why Arteta signed Auba if he knew his ‘process’ (and I use the word very lightly ) was going to change where it no longer suited Auba’s close range goals play. Just have to chalk this one down to Arteta along with the long list of other issues Arteta has brought and continues to bring to the club. It’s his… Read more »

I am not going to respond to the usual personalised attacks of Tony. However, Tony suggested yesterday that his management preferences for Arsenal were Ten Hag and Rangnick. So please explain why you consider Rangnick aged 63 an ideal “long term manager for us. He has had 15 jobs mainly in Germany with second rate clubs. Most of his contracts have lasted 1 or 2 years and the only job in his entire management career which lasted more than 100 games was at Hoffenheim. He has been appointed interim Manager at Man U with option if successful as Football Director.… Read more »

ES, are you seriously saying that being manager of Ajax is not as much pressure as being Arsenal manager ?….they are expected to challenge for the title EVERY SEASON and look at their pedigree in European competition !

Holland maybe an inferior league to England but Ajax is a not an inferior team to Arsenal, far from it.

Tony

So what you’re saying ES is you don’t rate Ten Hag or Rangnick.

They wouldn’t do better than Edu and Arteta?

Right glad you’re not on the manager section committee, then.

Emiratesstroller

UTarse

Yes I am saying that working at Ajax is not as pressurised as at Arsenal.

That does not mean that Ajax is not a great club, but the Dutch League is not as intensive
as the EPL. There are effectively three major clubs in Holland which are Ajax, PSV and
Feyenoord.

You need to read Le Grove to understand the huge demands and expectations imposed on
Arsenal and its management. We had a run of 11 games when we were undefeated. This
was followed by three recent defeats.

The mood change swings with the results.

Emiratesstroller

Tony I did not say that. I asked you a simple question, which was what are your reasons for suggesting these two managers are what we require. In the case of Rangnick there has to be questions about his competence. A manager who has had 15 jobs lasting mainly 1 or 2 years and has only managed 100 games at one club is hardly a recommendation. Contrast his record with Klopp and Guardiola. Both these managers have had just three senior management jobs. Klopp has averaged 7 years at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool and Guardiola has managed Man City for… Read more »

Emiratesstroller

Tony I did not suggest or discuss that Arteta and Edu were better options. I asked you a direct question about the merits of the two managers you seem to think are better options. If you consider that they are better than Arteta then please quantify their achievements. Rangnick has never coached a major club in his life and as far as I am aware has not won a league title. His main claim to fame is that he applied to be German National Coach, but was not appointed. Ten Hag has better credentials than Rangwick in that he reached… Read more »

Signing Auba disappointed me, because of his age, the length of contract and, most of all, the ridiculous salary. I suspected it might put him in the comfort zone. At the same time, as you point out, letting him go seemed risky.

Arteta’s long term process was clearly a ‘young and vigorous’ policy, and I believed it better to bite the bullet than dither. I guess after Auba and Willian, Arteta won’t make that mistake again.

Fingers crossed, Howe will take him in Jan. Yesterday’s 4-0 defeat must make a proven goalscorer his prime target.

Emiratesstroller

Rich Arsenal have rebuilt their squad and we are now playing with the youngest starting X1 in the EPL. Athletic has reported exactly what has happened with Aubameyang.

The club allowed Aubameyang to travel to France last Tuesday to collect his mother on the
understanding that he would return to London the following day.

Aubameyang returned on Thursday and factoring in Covid Testing was sent home rather
than train. He was not therefore picked for Saturday game.

However, he has returned to training today.

A brilliant article, one of which I agree with particularly where Auba is concerned. Saturday’s win was a statement of Arteta’s intent carried through by the players. I get the feeling that the naysayers will always exist (the “Arteta’s shit, the team’s shit, Kronke out, top 6 isn’t an improvement blah blah) therefore we have to find a common ground to exchange perspectives. But Auba’s perceivable attitude, performances and behaviour is not substantial enough to overshadow the progress that is happening in Arteta’s stead. The Aubameyang disciplinary infraction isn’t as clear cut as it seemed.
The player has been on a precipitous decline for a year and is a poor leader.
