TUESDAY ROUND-UP

by .

Arsenal had THREE players in the starting 11 for England last night. Say what you will about the current project, but that is absolutely immense stuff. The sort of thing that makes local and international fans proud. It’s not like the crop of players we have currently are duffers, this is a team good enough to make the finals of a major tournament.

Even better than that? They all contributed. Ramsdale kept an outrageous clean sheet, keeping one shot on target OUT. Emile landed an assist and his first international goal. Bukayo Saka scored late on.

There’s a really good chance we’ll see Ben White in the squad at some point over the next year if he keeps up his levels.

Project Premium Youth is young, but these sorts of wins give it a bit of vindication. Hale-End is producing elite talent and the scouts/analysts at Arsenal are doing a good job identifying players about to bang.

The news out of Liverpool isn’t exactly marvelous for them. Mane and Firmino are two of the biggest names that might struggle to make the first team. I think in total, they are about 9 players down. They’ll still be fielding the best player in the world right now and they have more than enough firepower, but let’s be honest, this is a pretty decent time for a form side to be playing a team that’s in a patchy moment.

It’s going to be an interesting game. West Ham, Brentford and Brighton just went for it. Liverpool really struggled with West Ham’s crossing and Brentford basically bullied Liverpool with high balls. We’re not quite at their level in the box, but I think our set-plays are certainly going to be a big weapon of ours.

The biggest weapon we have? It’s our defence. They will basically set the tone for the day. They need to bring peak concentration levels, but more importantly, they need to go to Anfield and play with bravery. When Ben White and Gabriel step up and hold that line, it opens out game up. When Ben White and Gabriel break the press early on, it makes other teams think about what they are doing.

We caved against Brighton. We let Palace bully us back for a large chunk of the game. We cannot allow that against Liverpool.

Right, short one today because there’s not a lot going on in the news!

DivineS, I suspect that some posters who were rabidly anti Arteta have now found an indirect avenue to express their feelings by getting onto the PV4(legend) bandwagon

I think he has done a great job so far and I think he might do an excellent job at Arsenal but then sentimentality does come into it!

Bob N16

No worries Tony, all the best.

Wow, the traffic on here is ridiculous. But it isn’t surprising. Qualifiers for international matches isn’t that great. It is very boring. I hope we get regular football for atleast 3 months from now. There is an argument for continuity against Liverpool. But I think we should go for more protection and play a back three. Of we lose to them, it will need to be with a marginal scoreline and we need to put up a fight. A back three would allow us to fight and to not be carved open. Mane, Henderson and Milner all have trained and… Read more »

Devine Sherlock I’m not saying Arteta is not involved in the resurgence, it would be daft to think differently, but the point I was making was that Paddy has got Palace on the front foot playing end to end football where Gallagher has been a real gem of a find on loan from the Chavs. If they improve on their current form, they will be hard to beat when we play them. My curiosity with Palace has been purely Paddy driven. A player and man I’ve always respected on and off the pitch. Although it’s hard to deny their last… Read more »

Tony Everyone is beatable now the playing fields are slowly leveling out – still some way to go. Perhaps the Super League will eventually come into being where the playing fields will finally be level, which is great so long as there is relegation at the end of each season. Everyone has always been beatable as for playing fields levelling up sorry I think that is a myth. Of course one of the top 4 or 5 will go through a period in the dumps but the reality is that other than when a perfect storm happens and a Leicester… Read more »

Tony Most of what Palace and Viera have been able to do is is because they made some astute signings over the years & this season Guehi , Andersen , Olise , Eze , Odsonne Eduoard . I think Roy Hodgson deserves some bit of credit there . He managed to keep Zaha , Benteke & oversaw Tyrick Mitchell growth and they simply managed to beat the drop over the years as well. Injuries to key players is the key challenge here and I do agree with you that if Arteta fails we should can look at Viera as replacement.… Read more »

If by ‘jury’ you mean the anti-arteta brigade and the fence-sitters on here, then yes, the jury is still out or irredeemably hostile.

But if you mean those who attend the games – a far more accurate measure – then no, the jury has made its decision: Arteta is the right man for the job.

We’ll have to agree to disagree.

I see football’s evolution differently to you.

Emiratesstroller

Arteta inherited a squad which contained a lot of ageing players on grossly inflated wages. By contrast the current squad is much younger with an average age of 25.4 [Transfermarkt] and where the wage bill has been much reduced. There will be I am sure disappointments this season, perhaps this weekend against Liverpool, but I do think that we are moving in right direction. I suspect also that future recruitment will be much more focussed than has been the case in the past. This summer I suspect that the major signing whoever it might be will be a goal scoring… Read more »

Divine I understand your Arteta POV and he’s not going anywhere this season so we’ll see.

I just want the team to do well and Palace not as well as us, but we’ll enough for Paddy to show his credentials, as it would be great to see him manage a big Euro club if not us.

Let’s see how he performs this season.

Rich

ES, A goal scoring striker would certainly be preferable to a non goal scoring striker…

I’d still be inclined to go internal, use Eddie as an internal replacement for Lacazette, and offer Martinelli more minutes

Loan out Balogun for 18 months, see if develops into an internal solution to Auba in 2023

Much of our improvement over the next 18 months should be internal, 2 of our biggest jobs should be to tie down Saka + Saliba

Emiratesstroller

Rich

Nketiah is leaving the club. There is no chance that Arsenal will keep both Balogun and Nketiah who are both employing the same agent.

Nketiah may well have been a prolific goalscorer at U21/23 level, but I am far from convinced that his overall play is good enough to replace Aubameyang and Lacazette. For me he is another Francis Jeffers.

englandsbest

Nketiah is potentially far more than just a fox in the box. He has developed into a non-stop athlete who can operate from wing to wing, from midfield to penalty box. Arteta has stated publicly that he wants him to stay. And I’m backing ketiah to stay.

Ollie

Englandsbest

‘ He has developed into a non-stop athlete who can operate from wing to wing, from midfield to penalty box.’

I’d be very interested to know which matches you’ve seen him in that has shaped this opinion. I think Nketiah has obviously put on some muscle and is better than he was last season, but IMO he’s unproven at PL level.

Emiratesstroller

Rich

Yes Arsenal’s priority should be to get Saka to extend his contract.

My concern is the track record of the agent who likes to move his clients. He acts for Iwobi Sancho [Man Utd], Nketiah, Balogun, Nelson AND Saka.

Arsenal are not going to extend contract of Saliba UNLESS he returns to club in summer and secures a regular starting place in first team.

DivineSherlock

Tony

Agree , As I said I wish the club hired Viera over Emery and if Arteta fails then we consider him. What do you make of reports doing the rounds that Laca has impressed in training and might be offered a contract ?

Tony

“For me he is another Francis Jeffers.”

How can you compare when Eddie hasn’t had a full season or two of PL games under his belt. In pre season I saw a bit of Andy Cole in him, but he was injured then back of the queue for minutes. I think the injury cost Eddie dearly because he was beginning to gain admirers.

It’s why Europe is so important for us to keep fringe players happy.

Not for me, ES.

Kroenkephobe

He has developed into a non-stop athlete who can operate from wing to wing, from midfield to penalty box EB I question that judgment about EN’s level of fitness. He looked shot after 70 minutes of that Leeds game. The hassling of their CDs and willingness to close space evaporated. He looked a lot sharper and had more stamina when he had a lengthy run out in the team at the end of the 19/20 season – that goal away at Soton springs to mind when he pressed an error out of their GK. Could be one of two things… Read more »

Bob N16

I find it difficult to see Nketiah as our first choice CF. He may well develop into a top quality player but he needs to play and with PEA and Laca ahead of him, his opportunity may only come through injury (and ACN for a few weeks). There is maybe one more window of opportunity to go up the pecking order, unless of course we sell him in January! January is going to be demanding after the Xmas period and hopefully getting into the SF of the League cup (+ AFCON). Balogun seems to have a little bit more magic… Read more »

Is there anything like a non goal scoring striker! That’s Rich…..of course I jest. Tying Saliba and Saka to new contracts is paramount.hope Balogun goes on a loan and plays with men,for us to properly gauge where he is at in his development… Arteta is our manager,if by omission or commission he deteriorates our assets, then there should not be any defence for such.He acted poorly, regarding some of our players, hope learns from his mistake quickly. He was backed last summer and we all agreed,we need quality over quantity this upcoming transfers.Tyler Adams and Isak would do just fine, then all… Read more »

@ England’s best.I think “ the jury” refers to the infamous Bedwetters collective. They haven’t gone away you know.Just waiting for their opportunity. As for comparing Arteta & paddy & in particular the time it’s taken for both to improve their respective clubs. That theory conveniently disregards the mess( Arteta) inherited & the length of time in Addition for a rebuild. Not that it’s ever accepted as an excuse by them.Once again,we’ll know a lot more by seasons end.Hopefully both will have great success.Only bodes well for Arsenal.

englandsbest

Positive pete Sadly the anti-arteta brigade are more likely to change their user-name than their tune. I wish Vieira well but, given the choice, the Club chose Arteta, not him, as manager. And the reason why is obvious but should be stated: he brought a long-term vision of Arsenal’s future,. He spoke of his plan for all to hear from the start. But because of the awful mess he inherited, getting rid of the overpaid and uncommitted had to be his first priority. Freed of most of them last summer, he was able to bring in plyers needed. But that… Read more »

Mr Serge

KT over nuno all day long away against trent, i would start eddie over martinelli if auba is out

Divine Laca can’t be faulted for effort, but supposedly we’ve said no to a long contract, but might be open to an unspecified short contract.

Laca is an important key component at the moment, but it depends who we buy in the TW with the reported £70m before a decision can be made on Laca.

What happens in training doesn’t always transfer to games with players. Laca can be inefficient often and frustrates.

I think the PL pace has passed him for 90 minutes now and on that basis he should move on to a slower league.

LoveSausage

PV4 is my all time favourite Arsenal player but I still don’t understand why so many people argue he should be our next manager. Spuds landing a top 5 in the world manager proves that the “we can’t get an elite manager” narrative is BS. We’re a big brand and we have money to spend – most elite managers would be willing to come. So if Arteta leaves I genuinely hope we drop the small club mentality and go for elite. No more Europa League specialists or people learning on the job.

DivineSherlock

Tony

It really is weird that now we need a Giroud type striker , who can hold the ball well and bring others into play while scoring goals for fun . Instead of Lacazette who quite frankly doesnt have the energy to last 90mins.

Mulerise14

We need more than a Giroulistic striker I think, not just a target man… speed is of essence.that was why I was not really sold on Belloti……we need to spare no cost in getting our own *Harland……the more I watch Isak, the more I hope we bring him in.

Mb

“But if you mean those who attend the games”

I was attending some and I was still anti-Arteta. The fact that he didn’t make much sense except for last 8-10 matches in 2 years time shouldn’t be forgotten.

The fact that he got 6 good players and now showing a better game should also be taken in account.

Just because he is good today doesn’t mean he wasn’t sh*t.

Call a spade a spade?

Tom

I’m not necessarily sure Vieira has delivered enough to be considered a success at Palace yet, but inheriting the league’s oldest squad with 14 players out of contract at the end of last season might be considered by some a mess and a major rebuilding job.

Not to mention changing the club’s decade old mindset of safety first managerial appointments that considered staying out of relegation scrap year in and year out as a mark of success.

Tee

“Shame that because of these very low clauses we can’t oven use Torreira as an effective makeweight for Vlahović…”

Who says Vlahovic is interested in coming to us? The fast we get rid of all these unwanted players the better for us because I see no reason why we should be stocking unwanted players

Tee

Can we just rest a little on this paddy bandwagon.

Tee

“I hope Josh is keeping an eye on Paddy as he is a good yardstick to measure Arteta by.Paddy is doing in 4 months what Arteta is now doing in 24 months.”

Don’t you get tired of running faster than your shadow?

Care to tell us what paddy has done in 4 months that took Arteta 24 months or it’s just another one of your wailing tactics

Tee

Last season, it was Villa and now it’s Paddy at palace

Must it always be a matter of comparison If and when any manager does well?

Tee

“As you well know certain individuals are made for certain positions. PV4 is made for the EPL. He was as a player and, I feel, he is as a manager.
He is going to be a success”

What kinda reasoning is this? Lampard was even more successful and was sacked at Chelsea.

Being a success as a player in EPL doesn’t translate to success as a manager

Tee

“Paddy was on a learning curve with his earlier club management unlike Arteta who’d lost the only game he had been in charge of, Dark Hei.” This is just too moronic. If you are referring to the man city game when guardiola was serving his suspension then you have to show prove he was the only one who picked that team and that pep had nothing to do with it. Arteta won a fa cup in his first half season but here some irredeemable wailing posters would want to shove it down our throats why the fa cup is shit… Read more »

Does anyone think haaland will actually wind up at chelsea or utd? My god, we stand as good a chance as nabbing him as utd does ffs they have so many fucking strikers. What are they gonna do get rid of martial, ronaldo and cavani in a single window?

Bob N16

Zachary, Haaland to City is my guess although Agent Odegaard could put in a word.

That said I noticed Isak combined really well with Odegaard at Sociedad so could that help? Don’t know much about Kuslevski other than he’s a Swedish winger so could we get two Swedes in?

englandsbest

Haaland for Arsenal? Why not? Odegaard will almost certainly be pulling for him. And PL is easily the most attractive league for a a top footballer to play in. And London the most cosmopolitan city to live in. And UK probably rates highest of any country in Norway’s estimation.

Transfer fee? Circa £100 mill. No problem. NUFC will likely pay half of that for Auba. Hard to think of any Club who will outbid Arsenal. All the top Clubs already have super strikers. Man City? They seem set on Harry.

Zacharse

Can’t help but dream eh fellas
I have read the release clause is somewhere in the 65m range

Isak would be just as great to sign too

What some supporters on here are saying is that PV4 deserves huge credit for what he’s done at CP and in such a short period.
I personally think it’s a load of crock to say Vieira is no good because he had an average time in the US and France.
I think Vieira will prove to those doubters that he can be a top manager and will, within the next few seasons, have top clubs vying for his services.

Graham62

Do I think PV4 would have been a better fit for Arsenal after Emery?……..Actually, yes I do.

Just an opinion.

Taylor Swift

EB makes a great point. The jury doesn’t consist of 12 Arteta out good men. No, it consists of 60,000 good men at the Emirates who have cast their vote. The place is rocking, the best atmosphere literally since the place opened. I don’t go to away games, I’m too old really, but you can tell the away fans are on fire

Zacharse

Graham
Its not that i think your point is wrong or weird etc
Just that its funny to me you even bother to go there after 11 games

Graham62

Zacharse

Time will tell if Arteta is the man for the job but, based on recent weeks, things are definitely improving.
Let’s hope things continue in this vain
My perceptions on Vieira may be irrelevant based on where we are at present and you are right, after just 11 games, he has not earned the right to be considered a great coach.
Based on watching CP over the past few seasons though , I would say that what he has achieved in just 11 games is pretty good.

Rich

Things don’t stay the same, Alexis turned down Liverpool for Arsenal in 2014, Suarez wanted to leave Liverpool for us in 2013, and Alonso was desperate to join us in 2007 Sustaining success is difficult, Man City are the only team to deliver back to back titles in 13 seasons Arsenal will come again, if we add well to this squad, then there’s no reason we can’t build a competitive team for 3-4 seasons that captures hearts + minds globally The amount of young players currently doing well is a great advertisement to attract future stars. We’d likely need CL… Read more »

@EB – Haaland’s fee isn’t going to be £100m, as just about everyone knows due to a clause in his contract he’ll be available for around £65m. The fee isn’t the issue, he’ll be on massive wages, probably Ozil level or higher. Even if he wanted to join us it isn’t going to happen.

Can’t see us going for Bellingham either when we clearly need a striker (expect to see Xhaka get minutes when fit, sadly he’s going nowhere).

englandsbest

kris No, I don’t know Haaland, never met him. If you have, and have personal knowledge, how he thinks, how he behaves, fair enough. If not, it’s worth taking account of how people generally feel about taking a new job, moving to a different country. All the points mentioned by me come into that context – having a friend there, for example, people from your own country. You describe him as an ‘obsessive winner’ as if that puts Arsenal beyond the pale. On the contrary, young players are seeing the Club as the perfect place to go if they want… Read more »

Andy 1886

The clause allows Clubs to bid for Haaland, but the final fee will be higher.

No idea what his current wages are, but Arsenal could probably treble them and by Ozil/Auba standards they would still be low

China1

I don’t see Haaland wanting to join us. He’s already done his development time in Austria, then more at Dortmund. He’s already understood to be probably a top 2 player of his entire generation. How long are you gonna spend on these stepping stone clubs until you go to somewhere seriously aiming for CLs each season?

Only he knows the answer but I really doubt he’s join arsenal right now if he could join Chelsea, city, or liverpool.
