TUESDAY ROUND-UP

by .

Arsenal had THREE players in the starting 11 for England last night. Say what you will about the current project, but that is absolutely immense stuff. The sort of thing that makes local and international fans proud. It’s not like the crop of players we have currently are duffers, this is a team good enough to make the finals of a major tournament.

Even better than that? They all contributed. Ramsdale kept an outrageous clean sheet, keeping one shot on target OUT. Emile landed an assist and his first international goal. Bukayo Saka scored late on.

There’s a really good chance we’ll see Ben White in the squad at some point over the next year if he keeps up his levels.

Project Premium Youth is young, but these sorts of wins give it a bit of vindication. Hale-End is producing elite talent and the scouts/analysts at Arsenal are doing a good job identifying players about to bang.

The news out of Liverpool isn’t exactly marvelous for them. Mane and Firmino are two of the biggest names that might struggle to make the first team. I think in total, they are about 9 players down. They’ll still be fielding the best player in the world right now and they have more than enough firepower, but let’s be honest, this is a pretty decent time for a form side to be playing a team that’s in a patchy moment.

It’s going to be an interesting game. West Ham, Brentford and Brighton just went for it. Liverpool really struggled with West Ham’s crossing and Brentford basically bullied Liverpool with high balls. We’re not quite at their level in the box, but I think our set-plays are certainly going to be a big weapon of ours.

The biggest weapon we have? It’s our defence. They will basically set the tone for the day. They need to bring peak concentration levels, but more importantly, they need to go to Anfield and play with bravery. When Ben White and Gabriel step up and hold that line, it opens out game up. When Ben White and Gabriel break the press early on, it makes other teams think about what they are doing.

We caved against Brighton. We let Palace bully us back for a large chunk of the game. We cannot allow that against Liverpool.

Right, short one today because there’s not a lot going on in the news!

Wow…..1st time ever Tr8phy!
Now let me read

Ashwin Gunner

Good One Mulerise14. DM and N5 will be proud..

Ollie

Who else, other than Firmino and Mane, is out for Liverpool on Sunday?

Leedsgunner

Balogun injured apparently. Hope it’s nothing serious because he could see a lot more playing time in the second half of the season… either with the Arsenal or on loan.

Frankly, if it was up to me I would give all of Nketiah’s time to Balogun. At least he has committed himself and his future to the club.

He just needs a good run in the line up.

Leedsgunner

*in the line up? In the first team!

Mark S

Top 10. I hate International Breaks.

Mulerise14

Ashwin… thanks.
Am due for some tr8phy , after all am an honorable man..lol

Mulerise14

Mane trained today…….I don’t know why am feeling great about the upcoming battle….. bring them on!something tells me,we are going to shock ’em.
Can you imagine letting Tavares loose against Alexander Trent-Arnold?ESR gonna leave vvd to the dust……it’s like we should play it on the morrow.
can’t wait

G

Don’t think Liverpool’s injuries that bad, they’ve got as good a player to replace firmino, Mane should be fit and Robertson hopefully will miss the game

Gogo

I think we will will this game against liverpool with another clean sheet.

Habesha Gooner

Arsenal fans are rejoicing too much over the prospect of facing a depleted Liverpool. But they still have enough to field a strong starting 11. Here is a team that can be available for them. Allison, TAA, Konate, Van Djik, Tsikimas, Fabinho, Thiago, Chamberlain, Minamino, Jota, Salah You could also put Origi in there ahead of minamino. It is still a hard team and it is at Anfield. We have to show up to get a result. I am confident we can get a draw if we show up but it isn’t as easy as some are thinking it would… Read more »

Ollie

Habesha

I think we’re more likely to beat that team than their first 11. Anything that increases the likelihood of us winning is good news let’s be honest

Habesha Gooner

Ollie
Yeah but realistically they are only missing a LB, a CM and a LW. Mane, Keita and Robertson are the ones who are quality that are missing. Firminho is good too but Jota is just as good as him. Three players missing from Liverpool’s starting line up doesn’t give us much edge as many seem to think. We are probably missing Partey too. So it is an advantage but not a lot. Just small margins.

Leedsgunner

The last thing we need to do is underestimate Liverpool. Rather… what we need to do is to press the advantage from the first minute and if we score early turn the screw.

This way we signal to our rivals that we mean business and we begin rebuilding the fear factor that the INVINCIBLES had in their day.

InsideRight

If Arteta goes Galaxy Brain on this one and tries to play a defensive style, we will get battered.

The teams that have got something out of the bin dippers this season have played to pressure them and create chances, not simply to hold the line. Play like we did in the first half against Spuds and we’re in with a shout. Play like we did against Brighton and, well, you know the rest.

GAZZA

Cant see Arteta going for it at Anfield so expect another game like at Brighton

Tom

The teams that got something out of Liverpool are teams that play to their strengths and are excessively good at it.
If Brighton tried to do it Westham style they would’ve failed, just as the Hammers would doing it Brighton style.

Arsenal aren’t going to get anything out of Liverpool by surprising them with something out of left field.

Graham62

Should be an intriguing game.
Never buy into the weak team scenario.
Liverpool will put out a strong team, there’s no doubt about that.
So many players coming back from international duty will make it an interesting encounter.
I hope Arteta doesn’t go too defensive.
Brighton showed how it can be done at Anfield.

englandsbest

Hope Eddie plays

Taylor Swift

Against Liverpool, I would go for a bit more control in midfield and play Ode with Lacs up front and bring on Auba when Laca runs out of gas.

They have one point out of last six so there is a chance as long as we don’t go all defensive.

Br0wnie

I see news that Auba was taken off injured but was celebrating in the locker room afterwards

Biodun

Arteta has to do something different to win Liverpool. We will play a 4-4-2 in the first 60 minutes…Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, Gabriel, White, Tierney….4 man midfield…AMN on the right, Tavares on the left, Partey (if he is fit) & ESR to anchoe. Laccazzette and Aubameyang upfront. We must choke and crowd out Liverpool in the midfield. If we get the tactics right, our goals will come from Laccazzette and ESR and we will hold Liverpool for the first 60 minutes. The changes they make will influence our own substitutions and if we are wise, we can manage the match till it… Read more »

Auba picked up calf injury … nobody is real sure how bad yet, though.. Sat out today.. but he may not be fit for full 90 versus Pool.

That bad news aside.. funniest thing I saw during this Interntional break is Canada making Mexio play on a frozen pitch with 2 foot snow banks all around the edges. Canada does love their hockey.

Dissenter

The Canadian goalie is wearing a hoodie too beat the cold
Never seen that one before

PEA injured?

Is this possibly another opportunity for a youngster to step in and make us better?

Though the list of who seems to almost write itself, and succinctly at that.

China1

I think what we’ve shown is that we’re good at overrunning teams early doors and we’re good at closing shop in the second half. I’d expect us to go for that approach and hope we do. If we manage to go a goal up reasonably early we should be looking to steal a second whilst they’re rattled. There’s a high probability of us conceding a goal but there’s also a decent chance we can limit them to no more than that of our defense plays as well as it has lately. But if we score early then try and defend… Read more »

If PEA is injured I think we should roll the dice on Eddie myself

He’s got the work rate, pace and team play. He is a goal threat. He also must be chomping at the bit for a chance.

I’d keep it 4-4-2 and roll that dice

Tony

China Eddie has said he wants to leave with Paddy interested.

I’d go Balogun or Martinelli who ever is ready.

Habesha Gooner

The 442 has been good for us. But if we have to take out Aubameyang, then Odegaard should play. Put Lacazette upfront. If Odegaard is back to doing the hard work of leading a press then he will be very useful. And he had a good Cameo against Watford. So I think he should be given a shot.

Mulerise14

Balogun is injured too and how Martinelli gets his groove back is gonna be a box office great….we have to be pragmatic about this, Eddie is the most ready to come into the 1st eleven now, contract issue not withstanding,a’thing that brightens our chances must be done.Tets should play him.Eventually,we need one of Martinelli or Balogun to come in and replace Auba and seek Laca’s replacement outside. And who knows,if we guarantee Eddie that number 9 shirt,he just may change his mind.

Tony

Mul 14 I wasn’t discounting playing Eddie, but didn’t know Balogun was injured. Martinelli just needs some TLC and reigniting in him; he has the raw ability, as he always has the passion if not too much passion and too little thinking. He’s been playing Arteta football that came with a handbrake and he was like, “what the fuck is this handbrake?’ He found it alien to what he did well with Emery, in my pov. Guide, but let Martinelli get back to what he did best; running at people with the ball, especially in their area. We don’t know… Read more »

Pierre

Sounds like Aubamayang probably has a small tear in his calf muscle, they normally take a couple of weeks to heal…rest is the cure and don’t come back too early…not that I’m an expert but i had a couple of calf muscle tears, one (serious)felt like i had been hit by a baseball bat and put me out for 4/5 weeks , the other( not so serious) felt like bruising and healed pretty quickly.. Could be completely wrong of course. Eddie should be the replacement but Arteta will probably bring in Odegaard and push Lacazette up top. Out problem when… Read more »

Pierre I believe we will begin to see Odegaard show more bravery as he knows that his Arsenal career could be over before it’s started. It’s very interesting you say this because Ancoletti inferred in an interview that at RM he had expected Odegaard to show far more in training and indeed when he received his opportunity, albeit limited , when picked for their first team. Odegarrd is 23 in a few weeks time he really needs to show more but I am far from convinced he has yet adjusted to the pace, intensity and indeed tactical nous of players… Read more »

Sophie Ellis-Bextor, what a champion.

Rich

Odegaard is a brilliant footballer, I wouldn’t pick him for Liverpool away though I wouldn’t go with Lacazette for this one either, we need a threat in behind, that’s not Laca’s game, he’ll get eaten up by VVD + Konate If Auba isn’t fit, we should go with the pace of either Pepe or Martinelli down the middle I’d like to see this: ……….,……Ramsdale …,….Tomi White Gabriel Niles Partey Sambi Tierney …….Saka …………Smith Rowe ….……..Aubameyang Liverpool will likely have two thirds of the ball at Anfield, we need to keep it tight, ride out the early storm, and hit them… Read more »

Good team Rich although it’s quite a radical change in formation which might be risky!

andy1886

I noticed that Guendouzi came on as a sub in France’s qualifier against Finland last night.

Emiratesstroller

If Aubameyang is injured I would expect Arsenal to replace him with a goalscoring forward
rather than Odegaard ie Pepe or Martinelli.

Arsenal will need to make a decision regarding Nketiah in the New Year. My guess is that Arsenal will try and offload him then and replace him with Balogun in first team squad.

I will be surprised if both Lacazette and Nketiah will leave in the same window. Arsenal’s priority is qualification for Europe and I think that it is highly unlikely that we would offload
2 strikers in same window.

Agreed. She and her mum are a couple of good eggs. She’s talented but doesn’t take herself too seriously which is a great combo. That groovejet track that she sang on is a genuinely good pop tune. Clearly a fun parent too – good luck to her recovering from her dance marathon

Tony

“Arsenal will need to make a decision regarding Nketiah in the New Year. My guess is that Arsenal will try and offload him then and replace him with Balogun in first team squad.”

It was reported a few days ago Eddie wants to leave and Arteta can’t persuade him to stay. Alas reported Paddy is interested in him, but there will be plenty to cash in on our mistakes.

Bob N16

I’d potentially keep Eddie until the summer, as long as he goes to another English team we’ll get compensation even though his contract will have expired.

Chris

I’d like to keep Lacazette where he is playing well, in the hole, and replace Auba (if he is injured) with Nketiah or Martinelli.

Chris

Anyone else just zone out of football during international breaks? I just catch up with everything on Netflix, get some PS4 time in etc

I don’t even realise England we’re playing the other night let alone won 10-0, somebody had to tell me at work! Delighted for the Arsenal lads involved though. I can’t last recall when we had won any young and exciting players featuring in the England squad.

Rich

Liverpool are strong favourites for this one, we’re 13/2 for the win It would be such a big confidence boost is we could get something My heart is telling me we can do it, my head is telling me we’ll likely come unstuck away against an established + experienced team, who know what they’re doing I should be listening to my head, there’s usually less heartbreak that way, but this young team have got me emotionally invested again, which usually means heartbreak I need to stick with my 5th place, 69-74 points, with an outside chance of 4th, as our… Read more »

If I were Arteta……

Bergkemp had hinted about his desire to be at Arsenal when Arteta was signed, maybe also to be around his son who was at the Academy. So also Cazorla stated about he is open to do an year or two at AFC. Both were met with deafening silence. Arteta knew he was out of depth , but guess that is the response of an insecure person. Henry ,of course, is out of question.

englandsbest

Most of the first-eleven pick have the best of their career in front of them, not behind them, a clear confirmation of the ‘young and vigorous’ policy. Of course there is room for ‘oldies’ even a need, they have experience, they can give guidance. IMO Laca is a strong case for an extension to his contract, a year, perhaps two. He has adapted well and willingly to Arteta’s style. Not so Auba. It seems to me that Arteta is struggling to fit him in, a burden almost, but impossible to drop because of his ridiculous salary. Furthermore he is holding… Read more »

It seems that Chambers is being targeted by Everton in the January window in the same report it suggests that Everton are the only club interested and that the maximum they will offer is £5 million but what makes the transfer unlikely is the fact that Chambers can leave for free at seasons end and that he will then become of interest to other clubs who won’t need to pay even a miserly £5 million Bob 16 rightly points out that should Nketiah run down his contract there would probably be compensation and whilst Palace seem to be interested there… Read more »

I really feel sorry for Martinelli…he needs his freedom and Tets would not just let go of the reign….to think of it, Eddie and Laca are of the same mold,as neither is blessed with searing pace to keep vvd and co honest at the back….if I were the gaffer I may just introduce Martinelli as a wildcard… I also think liverpool may not just be the game for Tierney to come back, Newcastle will do.Another wildcard is Tavares who is going to be a menace down our left…

Guns of Brixton

Not being a negative Nelly but I have no expectation but a loss

But it is the manner of that loss that is key. I hope we give a good fight and actually go for them

I still say Arsenal vs Liverpool is the best prem fixture as an guarantee of action and goals.

Muppetman

Yeah I want us to put up some sort of fight and it not be two nil after 20 mins with basically game over.

I go for Pepe up top and rotate between him and ESR on the left , when Pepe drops to the left wing ESR shifts into the 10 position and Laca takes the 9 position same on the right , let Pepe take the right wing and move Saka inside. Tests for Arteta to overcome to show his mettle
Coming from a goal down to win
Getting a result against a top 4 team
Show some maturity with in game management
Hope he shows some more growth against Liverpool

Graham62

PV4 obviously sees the potential in Eddie, I think the majority of Arsenal supporters also see it.
Eddie has been mucked about so much over the past couple of years, you have to feel for the kid.
The word has quickly got out that Vieira is a great coach and leader.
I think he’s building something special at Palace.

Bob N16

Sly, to add to your post, test of the players against Liverpool too!

Obviously Arteta has considerable influence but it’s ultimately the players that need to step up!

Bob N16

Shaun, love your confidence in Nuno but he’s excelled going forward but defensively he’s not come up against anybody of note. I think the wise move is to have KT back starting.

Rich

Bob, we won’t do it, but Niles has worked well at left back, when facing a left footer who likes to cut inside

I’d go with the experience of Tierney over Tavares for this one as well, but the smarter choice might be Niles, who’s our best 1 v 1 defender

Rich

Newcastle, Everton + Palace all linked with Pepe He’s a decent enough player with good end product, we can extract value out of him, but the writing kind of feels like it’s on the wall with only 2 years left on his contract this summer We’ve been strongly linked with Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus, which didn’t make much sense, he’s another lefty who likes to cut in from the right We’ve already got Saka, Odegaard, Pepe, who like to occupy the same area of the pitch Kulusevski would make sense if we could find a taker for Pepe, because he… Read more »

The thing I want to know is why did Edu agree to such low buy out clauses for our players on loan?

Mavropanos €5m
Guendouzi €11m

and now €15m for Torreira over at Fiorentina.

Shame that because of these very low clauses we can’t oven use Torreira as an effective makeweight for Vlahović…

Rich

Pierre, It was Niles who had Sarr in his pocket, not Tavares

https://arseblog.com/2021/11/tactics-column-maitland-niles-shuts-watford-down/

There’s multiple examples of it in this article, in the asymmetrical role you claim to hate

Leedsgunner

Against Liverpool I think I would be tempted to play a 5-2-1-2 to begin with —Tierney as the third centre back. He’s used to playing in that system for Scotland and we’re going to be hard pressed more than ever.

Pepe for Kulusevski would be a great deal. Take whatever for pepe, I reckon it would be be 25 mil+. Juve would take 30 mil for him too. I think he will fit our team more than pepe ever will. My belief is that it’s Eddie’s agent who is the problem. As a free agent Eddie could expect a bigger salary than Arsenal are offering. Arteta won’t give way (rightly, because it will trigger wage upgrade demands from, say, Saka and ESR). Which is why Eddie hardly gets a nod from him. Part of the new culture at the Emirates is not to be taken for a ride by mercenary agents. All that is over and done with. Hooray for that. As it happens I believe Arteta will win the day, and Eddie will sign up, probably fire his agent.… Read more »

Leedsgunner

For those of you that don’t know already – Balogun and Nketiah have the same agent.

The Liverpool game is a game for athletes.

If Odegaard starts, we might as well be playing with ten men.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Do not back off of Liverpool. Like Wenger, focus on your strengths. Brighton and West Ham did.

If Auba is injured, play Martinelli. He’s a hassler.

Forget Nkethia, he’s gone. . Give minutes to players who have a future with us.

Arsenal is rapidly becoming the go-to Club for outstanding young players worldwide. The emphasis is on youth, on bringing players through. Everything in the Club is focused with that in mind. The ultimate aim obviously is that the Club never needs to pay big money for a ready-made player, it will develop all tat it needs.

englandsbest

I never rated Ozil. Buying him figures as one of Wenger’s worst mistakes. A matter of ego on his part, after his foolishness with Suarez bid. All in all Ozil cost the Club in excess of £100 million. But worst of all was the contempt he showed for the Club.

Sly

Bob
When we see what paddy’s done at CP in a short period of time it really lends to the onus resting mainly on the coach to get a great performance out of the team
I do take your point on player responsibility though
It does look like recent improvements have been down to arteta giving more freedom to players
Or maybe they’re understanding what he wants better

Bob N16

Sly, interesting your point freedom to play, not sure what this means in practice.

Playing a settled back 4, moving Saka to the right and ESR to the left (going inside when Tavares pushes forward) having a double pivot, Laca linking the midfield and attack, not losing…. lots of reasons why we are playing more fluently.
