YOUNG ENGLISH STARS MISS OUT + THOUGHTS ON PHASE 3

by .

Well kids, how are we doing on this fine day? I’m in Miami making deals happen. Well, ok, maybe not doing that. But that’s beside the point… the point being is that you are in the rain and I am not. So I am bragging about it.

Let’s move onto the latest in Arsenal opinion.

Gareth Southgate is back on the shit list after he passed on Ben White and Emile Smith Rowe.  Aaron Ramsdale did get a call-up, but you know he won’t start.

Now, on the one hand, we can take solace in the fact that two of our star performers don’t have to travel. On the other, you have to respect that they’ve both been better than some of the dross in the England setup and it’s a bit unfair. Still, that is international football. Reputation quite often beats out the hard facts of performances. There are a few in the current squad that are dining out heavy on the past. I’ve no doubt there are starting places in the future of all three players. They are young enough not to need to worry.

KT is back training with the Arsenal squad. It doesn’t sound like he’s ready for action, but I suspect he’ll be well in contention after the international break. I wonder if they’re going to line-up another friendly for the players that stayed at home? I do think KT will go back into the starting 11, though you’d be hard pushed to give a justification outside him being a top, top player. Nuno has done an excellent job in his absence, I hope some of the things he’s been doing will inspire the Scot.

Don Unai has passed on the Newcastle job. I think that’s probably for the best. Let’s be honest, the Spaniard travels extremely badly, and I have my doubts he’d get the control he has at Villareal under a megalomaniac at Newcastle. Eddie Howe is the frontrunner. It’s not as sexy as some had hoped, but I think it’s a sharp move. Eddie suffers from the English name tax. If his name was Ediano Howistzer and he’d taken a small Spanish team up 4 leagues, he’d be a hipster wet dream. But he’s not. He looks like he could paint your garage door in another life, so he’s written off. I struggled with the same thing, Peter Wood is a boring name, so I went to America where I can create endless hours of joy by just saying words like ‘Tally-ho’ and ‘blimey guvnor’… always go where you can be an object of joy, life is so much easier.

We play Watford at the weekend. We’ve been good against them over the years, we smashed them in preseason, but this is the Premier League, and Arsenal are that box of those chocolates Forest Gump was banging on about. If we show up, play with focus and energy, we’ll come away with the desired result and phase 3 of the season will have been a rip-roaring success. If we draw or lose, it’s a setback, but hopefully Arteta and the players will have done enough not to set the ball in motion for the whiners to get on the front foot for the international break.

It is fun to have a better flavor of conversation right now. All the things people complained about are slowly but surely being addressed.

The biggest win of the last phase was the senior players for me. Auba, Lacazette, and Partey have all decided that they are going to give us fitness, form, and leadership. Art De Roché had a great piece in The Athletic where he mapped out the numbers, Auba is pressuring more than ever, so those lying eyes of yours might be telling the truth for once. Lacazette has found the zone, he looks connected to the squad, he looks at ease with the beautiful game, and he’s playing a stunning role no one else in this squad can play. That one touch movement in the false 10 position allows our build-up to go faster, his aggression sets the tone for the team, and he’s showing up in pivotal moments.  Thomas Partey looks like a £50m player right now, that’s all we need to say there.

The young players haven’t ever let us down really. Saka and ESR have moved their games up a level, of that there can be no doubt. Smith Rowe is offering end product. Saka has been a little quieter on that front, but he’s still been good. Both of those players will grow in stature this season, they’ll become more reliable on off days, and the numbers will improve.

But how about the new signings? Talent ID was a big issue for the fans and rightly so. From what I understand, some of the cheaper signings with certain agents arrived at the club because that was all that was on offer from a certain operations guy that doesn’t work in the game these days. Since he exited the building, we’ve been laser-focused on getting the deals right. This Project should have started a year prior, we’d be so much better for it if we had, but there we are. What we have now is very exciting. We’ve aged down the squad, each of our 6 signings has offered something fresh to the side, the entire squad feels bigger in character for it.

We’re also offering performances now. Actual good football. Can we make the good football last longer? Yes. But that’s not the point, these players have been together 7 games, performances will get better, that’s a given. What we needed to see was that there is in fact a promised land and a clear identity. Well, we’ve seen it. We cannot unsee it now. We know the potential and we want to see more of it. There are going to be more rough moments. I’ve read and heard people doubling down on Brighton and Palace performances, like those 90s were moments of shame. Brighton should have beaten Liverpool. Palace beat Manchester City. Shake the idea from your mind that this is 2003 and there are whipping boy teams. It’s not the case. Every game has the potential to be tough. The league is so much stronger than it was even 6 years ago. We are going to suffer at times this season, as will every side. We’re 5 points off 2nd. Why? Because the league is tough this year.

The final part of the equation isn’t Arteta. It’s the fans. I don’t know what the pivotal moment was, but I do think the accusation that we were cheering City goals really stuck with a lot of people. It was not true and since then, it’s like the fans have gone out of their way to go all-in on the squad. The Emirates is loud. You can hear it through the TV. There’s very little groaning. The young players need that. Anyone can offer their energy when things are going well, but that’s not when they need it… they need it when there’s a disaster class brewing. Our fans are there for kids and it’s fucking beautiful to see/hear because our summer was radioactive online and there was a big fear that’d be in the ground.

The internet is not real my friends. I am glad about that.

We had our best week ever for podcast numbers. We broke the top 50 for UK sports podcasts again. The most interesting twist for the podcast is MORE people tune in for winning podcasts. That trend happens on the site as well. It wasn’t that way in the old days. Are we… the place for positivity? Did we move from the darkness to the light? Did someone just drop the keys to the hashtag #TeamPosiGooners through the letterbox? What turnaround. Anyway, thanks for listening (and watching), it means a lot. X

Nice positive post, can’t argue with any of it.

I’d just say considering the run of games we have after the international break, we really need 3 points against Watford

We have Rambosdale now on our side. We are getting difficult to beat

Case made empirically and persuasively. Good job mate.

Bob N16

Kroenke – mystifying post – too much time on your hands?

Leedsgunner

No complaints. All I ask for is three points to start. Clean sheet if possible and if I was being greedy four or five in the opposition net to help us improve our goal difference.

With Claudio R on the other bench they will set up like Leicester and look to counter attack. We need to play Leicester lite like we played against Leicester heavy, but not take our foot off the accelerator.

Dat guy Pepe

Thomas Partey looks like a £50m player right now,

Pump your breaks Pedro. Maybe I missed it but Partey is yet give us an Athletico type of performance. I’d say he looks like a £30M at the moment

Ramsdale will be England #1 soon enough. It’s funny that a country that produces so many good players always seems to produce dodgy GKs. I’m struggling to remember a single great English keeper since Seaman. But Pickford is dodgy even by English standards so Rambo will take over that spot soon. White has been great for us with the ball at his feet but he’s still suspect defensively. I can see why a conservative coach like Southgate wouldn’t want to take a chance. I hoped The Smith would get a call up. It’s a risk for us but it would… Read more »

A joyous post, Pedro. Thank you – and enjoy the sunshine.

Bob N16

If I come up with something Kroenke, I’ll surely share!

Tom

Pedro, it’s a cliche but the real magic happens on the training pitch, so complaining young Arsenal players didn’t get the call up in the same breath with saying they’ve only been together for seven games sounds shortsighted, considering the likes of White should get 8-10 additional training sessions with Arsenal under his belt, instead of bench warming he’d be doing for Southgate.

Not to mention Arsenal play Liverpool right after the break, and everyone of their starters will most likely be on international duty……………advantage Arsenal.

Emiratesstroller

Bob N16

I was not critical of your point of view.

However, we have far too often recruited an oversupply of players in particular positions and that has proven counterproductive.

Do we really want to repeat recent events of having on our books 10-11 Centre Backs?

It was not long ago that Arsenal Supporters wanted to see Bielcyk promoted to first team.
We landed up selling him to Derby for £6-7 million.

Ballard may well turn out to be an excellent player, but I don’t think that it will be at Arsenal.

Tierney away with Scotland
Partey away with Ghana
Lookonga away with Belgium
ESR away with England under 21
Saka away with England
PEA away with Gabon.

Ok white and Lacazette ain’t off on their travels but the vast bulk of the “ starting 11” are away post Saturday

TR7

Eddie Howe is an underwhelming appointment for Newcastle. Many people think Howe is underrated but I think he is quite overrated.

TR7

Liverpool, Arsenal and Leicester will be missing many critical players due to AFCON.

United, City and Spurs are going to be largely unaffected.

Chelsea will be without Mendy who has been absolutely brilliant. Don’t think they will miss Ziyech that much.

Leedsgunner

Ballard has done well on every loan he has gone on. In fact you could argue that he is following a trajectory very similar to Benny Blancos at the same stage in his career plus …he is even a regular Northern Ireland international.

He deserves a shot in the first team to see if he can fight for a spot in the squad with Saliba.

Mari and Chambers should go before Ballard

Pedro, interesting that you should mention Don Raul as I was just reading about him yesterday. 10 days before his ‘departure’ the scouting department was removed. WTF was that about? We were never told his reasons for leaving. Was Arsenal on the hook for something he did? That was August 2020. The difference to where we are now is huge. It frightening to think of what Arsenal would be like if he had remained.

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1517095/Arsenal-transfer-news-Fiorentina-Dusan-Vlahovic-London-meeting

I know, I know – in all likelihood it is just clickbait but think about it… what if it were true?

Brilliant for two reasons:

1. We need a young proven goal scorer with Lacazette and Nketiah most likely leaving at the end of the season.

2. We keep him away from Spurs. More than one source saying yesterday that Vlahovic is Conte’s top target.

So whether it be Jovic, Belotti and now Vlahovic it seems like we’re pushing hard for a striker in anticipation of Alex and Eddie leaving…

Leedsgunner

I wonder if Lucas Torreira will be thrown in there to lower the price…. after all he’s on loan in Fiorentina…

Leedsgunner

Is Tierney fit? Why don’t we pull for these Scotland games in light of the fact that he’s just recovering from an ankle injury?

The last thing we need is for Tierney to get injured again needlessly playing for Scotland.

We all know how Tierney will play… he’ll throw himself into those games 100%… with everything he’s got.

If anyone needs a two week rest period more than ever, just to recover and to regain his football vibe it’s him.

Leedsgunner

*pull him from these Scotland games…

Tavares can feel very hard done by if he is dropped straight away for Tierney. He has done nothing wrong in the two EPL matches he has played and has been good in a winning side. Really should be the case that Tavares is dropped when he has an under par match and then when Tierney gets his chance then he should show himself that there is no reason to revert to Tavares again for any real length of time. There has been a vibrancy about Tavares which we haven’t seen from Tierrney in a long time. Regarding the internet… Read more »

Good post Pieter Would! Southgate has done Arsenal a favour by being his usual uninspired self. The kids will get their opportunities simply because they are that good. If Southgate wants to hedge his bets on a poor and out of form Hurry Kane, thats on him. In time the right players will be on the squad, but I suspect after Southgate is gone. The next step for Arsenal under Arteta in regards the real belief stakes is to win a match in a hard fought game where we have been held by the opposition in the first half not scoring but go on to win the game in the second half or even come back from a goal down. Watford should be disposed of.

They have only beaten a drab Everton side and Norwich in recent times.

If anyone watched Everton being outplayed by West Ham at home in their previous game before the Watford match then they would not have been massively surprised that Watford won there although the dramatic final scoreline may not have been expected.

And then of course Everton went on to lose against Wolves as well.

Everton are not in a good state at present.

I’ know where you are coming from but I’m not much of a fan of the Carabao Cup to be honest. Never have been even when it was the Rumbelows Cup, The Milk Cup etc. For me it gives us a chance to play extra games and give the fringe lads minutes just in case they’re needed in the PL games. Anyway it was the last trophy the Spuds won so I. have to trash it….!!

Chika

First, we needed to beat the spuds to show our mettle, next it was villa, then Leicester away. I wonder what the next metric would be. Perhaps we would need to be losing by four goals in the first half then go on to score eight goals in the 2nd half to show we’re making progress.

Indeed the signs are certainly good. We’re making steady progress and I like the harmony within the team.

Last season, losing Tierney would have adversely affected the team, but today most fans can confidently say he shouldn’t return to the starting eleven yet. That’s another instance of the underrated growth a lot of fans are reluctant to acknowledge.

Speaking of England and substandard keepers, one of the greatest ever football quotes was capellini admitting he asked the players if he should pick ‘joe hart or calamity James’

Can you imagine your own manager calling you ‘calamity’? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣

“A CM who can play 6 n 8,same as Partey n Lokonga, that way a cover comes in for Partey while at African nation’s cup.”

Very crucial for us in January. I wonder if we could still get Bruno Guimares from Lyon or a similar player. Want us to really make a push for a strong finish.

Dusan Vlahovic reminds me a lot of RVP. Left footed with high technical skills, which is unusual with big guys. 6ft 2″ and Serbians are tough cookies too, so he’s made for the Premier League. Only 21 too. Exciting signing if it’s true, which you never know nowadays with our media.

China1

Mulerise yeah asking lokonga to mimic xhaka makes no sense. Xhaka has to play in that very specific way because he’s a really limited player who needs to be saved from his own glaring weaknesses. If you have a CM who is less one dimensional you should be playing to their strengths.

We built an entire system around protecting xhaka from himself lol. Sambi is not yet consistent but in terms of what he can bring to the table he has so much more to offer

The Vlahović story from Di Marzio is bonkers

Don’t know anything about him, but surely there’s zero chance we’ll pay £70 million for a player with 18 months left on his deal?

The vast majority of the clubs are skint, the player is reportedly refusing to sign a new deal, and we already have a surplus of strikers

Di Marzio was first to report our interest in Tomiyasu though….

Before you gloat to much about being on the beach in Miami, I just wanted to point out:

1. I just walked down 5th Avenue in Midtown. It is a gloriously sunny Autumn day here, the type I never saw growing up in England. Straight out of a good film.

2. If you are on a work trip then you are probably stuck in an office that is so air conditioned that it probably feels like a fridge. No flip-flops there.

3. And good luck finding a good football bar in South Beach where you can watch Sunday’s game!

No real surprise that Villa continue to flounder. Did they honestly believe that by selling their talisman star that he would make no difference and it really was the rest of them that brought on their previous success?

Great example of poor management and vision. And for the record, is it just me or does Emi seem very “ordinary” these days?

Someone’s going to pay the price for someone else’s decision to sell Grealish and replace him with unremarkable talent. Serious relegation candidates if they don’t turn things around soon enough.

Maybe, who knows but I certainly notice the difference. From seeing clapping in previous years. To now Arsenal Arsenal Arsenal ringing around the stadium. COYG!

I mentioned that the other day. I’ve been to two games and the atmosphere seems so much better. There was none of the groaning you used to get. Fans aren’t silly they know there is a plan in place & support the process. It will help the team too.

I think they know they owe the fans after the European Super League fiasco. Also, to increase the value of an asset you have to invest. If we do get someone big in January we can’t really ask for much more. That would be a massive statement. However, I am always cautious about media stuff because there’s so much click bait today.

Express story? And you believe that?

Every week I love the delicious bonus of watching Emi the villain get closer to relegation.

He made a big miscalculation, even though Arteta gave him the #1 job with us, and everybody here was blaming our club and manager, creaming over Martinez and Villa.
