EDDIE MAKES THE CASE, BUT FOR WHO?

by .

Well hello my darlings, how are we today? Good I hope. VERY good.

Hot topic of debate is the Eddie issue. He looks… good. Right? This isn’t just the one game he played, this is his mindset since preseason. He looks more powerful, his game is more deliberate, and he looks very focused. Amazing what the insecurity of having no new deal can do… and what growing up a little bit can add to your game.

I think there’s some concern at Arsenal that if he doesn’t sign up, he could be a sleeper-Emi Martinez for us next season. He’s a good player. He’s extremely young. He could add a lot of value to many clubs in the Premier League. As fans, we do tend to get into the mind that you are either an elite 17 year old or you are a failure. Not everyone can break like ESR or Saka. Ivan Toney is 25 years old, he’s making waves in the Premier League this season. There are loads of examples of players that are not great until they are. Patrick Bamford at Leeds is a prime example, even Leeds fans lamented how poor his finishing was… then things clicked last season and people were talking about big moves. He’s 28 years old! Let’s go a step further… Serge Gnabry was binned off by Arsenal at 22 after failing to stake his claim under Tony Pulis, now look at him? You can’t tell me anyone saw that coming.

It’ll be a shame to see him go. Folarin Balogun ain’t there yet. The third striker berth is open this summer with Lacazette going. It could be his. Let’s see if Arteta can persuade a player I’m pretty sure has little love/trust for a manager that benched him for a season.

I’m feeling pretty good about Arsenal at the moment. One of the interesting things about the Leeds game, which was a great spectacle, was the speed we were moving the ball at. The lethargic passing of last season seems to be cycling into something a little more one-touch and a bit more purposeful. There’s a rhythm to what we’re doing and it doesn’t look as one-dimensional as it did. When we spoke to Nigel Winterburn last week, he talked about working under George Graham and the relentless coaching of the defence. I asked him if he believed in over-coaching and he said he didn’t. The coaching is there to help you make better decisions on the pitch, but it’s down to the players to be bold and make them. I think one-touch passing is helping us. It wasn’t there before, now it is. Long may the confidence continue through every level of our squad.

Leicester at the weekend is another huge test. I do like that we set each game up as some sort of definitive moment in our season.

SPURS: Good side, if you can’t win the derby… well

Aston Villa: Good side, their midfield is better than ours, if we can’t beat them… well

Leicester: A real test, because they are top 4 contenders, if we can’t beat them… well

I’m going to keep it going. I think this is a real test because I see us at about the same level as Leicester City. They have great players, a well-coached operation, and they spring surprises. Brendan Rodgers is sharp and he certainly played us like a fiddle at home last season.

This game is a big one for us. We’re doing the business at home, but can we go away to a big atmosphere and win the occasion?

I really hope so. 9 games unbeaten has a nice ring to it. Moving 3 points past Leicester in November is a good omen heading into some really tough games. More confidence means we get to where we need to be faster.

3 points are important because there are a few games between teams that are rivals.

United vs Spurs

Liverpool vs Brighton

Villa vs West Ham

Wolves vs Everton

If we win our next two games, I think there’s a fair chance we’ll actually be in the top 4. That would be a lot better than how we were shaping up this time last season.

Right, that’s me done, see you in the comments.

Would have been nice to see Eddie in the squad and coming on, as it was set up perfectly for him to run the channels and put there defenders inder pressure, i suppose Arteta has his reasons for not including him in any premier league squad this season, just wish it was for footballing reasons. ..

If you are reading this , I sincerely apologize to even question the price of Ramsdale. Thats the transfer of the summer right there. Absolutely brilliant . Martinez who ?

Nigel Tufnel

Also Peter Schmeichel tweeted that’s the best save he’s seen in years.. haha and that includes his own son, who is pretty good. A lot apologies due the kid from the football experts here.

Nigel Tufnel

Sherlock …. very cool!

G8

Great win and top top defending display
Ramsdale and Gabriel were beyond immense
Team energy dropped after 30 mins is concerning
Auba still not convincing with his movements off the ball
Laca can’t do his hassle every week it seems
Michael Oliver did everything to ruin it for arsenal but we held on, well done boys

Arteta just said:- “Really happy (with the result) against a top team. Really hard to come here and win. We’ve done it, the way we’ve played the first half. The way we had to suffer against a really dangerous team that create you issues. And how we managed the game in the last 20 minutes. Overall, I’m really happy. Second half they were going to change players, formation as well and they were going to get at us. There were moments we didn’t manage certain situations well enough, some spaces they wanted to use and they created issues. Credit to them.… Read more »

Ødegaard sub not a bad idea, thinking of adding some control. He’s also a really good presser, so he’s never a waste. He actually put Saka in place for a couple good shots. Bukayo needs to work on the far corner shots.

I expected Ainsley to come on, but I liked the Kola move because I want to see more Tavares.

Ishola70

Some here are underestimating how Leicester can take the game to many teams in the EPL.

The game was won in the first period of the first half.

There is one thing to be totally outplayed by Burnley away in the second half earlier this season in comparison to being under pressure from Leicester.

Kroenkephobe

I thought Oliver’s performance was a curate’s egg. He did us quite a few favours in the first half but agree he was like a 12th player for them in the second.

Nigel (yeah right!) stop crapping on about Ramsdale and England. That’s the last thing we want to see as Arsenal fans. The fewer players in the NT the better our prospects you dunce.

Buckagh

Great result for a team that is only a short time together,
Fuck all the begrudgers on here

Chika

What a fantastic performance by Ramsdale and the lads. Kudos to Arteta as well.

Happy to see Partey get an extended run in the team. You can see the class and presence that he brings. Would be great if we could sign a quality CM in January to cover for him and eventually partner him when he returns from AFCON.

Jamie

What’s it going to take to get Johnny from the podcast to pen a guest piece here?

AFC Forever

Nigel, yes it’s about having options that can change the positioning of players. We struggled to get out that changed because of the positions Odegaard took up, just a positional tweak to create movement and pull Leicester players out of their shape.

Dissenter

Liverpool are in a crazy form
They will beat 18 teams not called city or Chelsea. 5-0 in this patch.

Glad we don’t play them soon

Northbanker

Ode will come good with some more game time. At times we get to see his superb passing ability and quick feet, but it is marred by his lack of concentration. He is better in the no 10 position and not really the player we need when under the cosh. However what i will say is that the point when we started getting control of the game again was actually when Ode came on. Let’s not write him off too quickly the way The Ram was

Jamie

“Glad we don’t play them soon”

We play them in 3 weeks. At Anfield.

Emiratesstroller

What a fantastic result and performance.

How ironic that all the fair-weather supporters who have been baying for blood and the head

We have played a young team who showed their mettle today.

that ramsdale save will be shot beautifully for the amazon doc.

Amazon calling all the expert photo editors to use all the colour grading to make that piece a masterclass

jokes aside, great win, the team played well
Arteta not the best in the in game management, i felt brendan Rodgers was trying different things but mikel stuck to what he knows best (plan A)

Maybe he could have made the subs a bit earlier but i dont want to be too critical

Feels good to sit inside the top 6 after so long

“Happy to see Partey get an extended run in the team. You can see the class and presence that he brings.”

Absolutely. He is so important. Only returned for the Norwich game so he’s yet to get back to his best. . He has a presence and takes up good positions. Xhaka will replace him during AFCON, I suspect.

Lucky we missed Partey & a lot of todays players for those first three games and not against teams we’re actually fighting against.

Bob N16

Loved watching the game. Leicester put pressure on our defence and we kept a clean sheet. Thought the subs by Arteta were all sound and the timing was right.

I know this might come across as a little harsh but I felt with Ramsdale’s outstanding save, it would have been more comfortable if he’d been a couple of feet to his left. That being said he’s Arsenal and England’s No.1 – a legend after 7 games! Gabriel is class! I’d be surprised if he isn’t called up for Brazil.

Northbanker

ES – MA has somehow survived 3 sacking points. I would have got rid of him after Villareal but we didn’t. He has made mistakes most of his tenure over selection, transfers and tactics. We saw some of that again in this first week of the season. I still have doubts as he still selects Kolasinac and would choose Xhaka if he could. But here we are – he /Edu have made some great transfer decisions finally this Summer (exc Xhaka re-signing) and it is gelling now. So for now he has my support and maybe he is learning his… Read more »

How is it ironic? Everyone here is an Arsenal fan. We want Arsenal to succeed.

Honestly you sound dim.

“:However what i will say is that the point when we started getting control of the game again was actually when Ode came on.”

It was. Clever tactical tweak because Leicester’s shape was controlling the ball. When Laca came off, Odegaard’s positioning moved the Leicester team around. It was no coincidence we gained more control when he came on, thats what’ Arteta referred to in his comments after the game.

Leicester 0-2 Arsenal

That second Arsenal goal came from a misplaced pass from James Maddison to Jamie Vardy. Less than 30 seconds later, the ball is in Leicester’s net. Ruthless.

Rich

As much as a senior call up would be nice for Gabriel, from a purely selfish point of view, I’m happy for him to sit out the international break

When he went down in the first half, my heart skipped a beat, early days, but looks like he’s growing in stature this season

AFC Forever

Bob N16

Absolutely. I used to hide my eyes whenever crosses or corners came into our box. Not any more.

Also, these boys really fight for each other. The number of blocks and the way they hunt players down shows real desire. Tomi today made two incredible interceptions. As for Gabriel he is clearly benefitting from the players around him, looking another top quality signing.

Kroenkephobe

How ironic that all the fair-weather supporters who have been baying for blood and the head of Arteta have now changed their tune.

You egregious hypocrite. In your cozy world only a select few are allowed to call themselves Arsenal fans. Bullshit – I’m ten times the Gooner you are and I won’t be talked down to by cold-hearted, robotic, pompous, ballbags like you. You equate imagining being part of the Arsenal establishment with real fandom. It’s nothing of the kind.

bacaryisgod

Man City fans moaning every time there’s a misplaced pass. How spoiled can you get?

Nelson

That is not a red for Laporte

bacaryisgod

Almost a carbon copy foul on Zaha from Laporte to the Evans one on Auba. Red Card, of course.

MidwestGun

Diss we do play Liverpool soon.. as Jamie said. Only 2 matches from now. Thats why a Watford win is important.. to go into that one with supreme confidence..

City down to 10 men with an almost identical tackle on Zaha to the one on Auba.. Refereeing is so incinsistent. But City in trouble.

Major_Jeneral

It is a red card for Laporte , It is the same thing with the Evans one on Auba. He is the last man and the distance doesnt matter.

AFC Forever

bacaryisgod

“Man City fans moaning every time there’s a misplaced pass. How spoiled can you get?”

Yes. How does that help the team play better?

Got to say, I’ve been to two games at the Emirates this season and the fans have been brilliant.

AFC Forever

Agreed and away fans have been immense too.

“It is a red card for Laporte , It is the same thing with the Evans one on Auba. He is the last man and the distance doesn’t matter.”

Yes. What is all this bollocks about distance? Stopping a striker through on goal is stopping a goal scoring opportunity. end of.

We got stitched up against Palace by VAR after Dean missed the assault on Saka. That’s another two points stolen from us.

Northbanker

So impressed with our defence – it is shaping up to be our best collection of players since the Invincibles. Early days yet of course but shaping up nicely. The main addition now needed will be a back up keeper when we sell Leno. However I’m tempted to see how Okonkwo and Hein can develop.

Dissenter

The VAR official for our game was the Australian that denied PapSoks goal against Palce two years back.

AFC Forever

Diss, those two fouls with different outcomes tell you something we have all said for a very long time. It’s no longer funny.

Emiratesstroller

Kroenkephobe

What an idiotic statement. What exactly are your credential as a supporter.

Like most of your kind you look always at the short term when expressing an opinion.

I suggest that you take a look at most of my comments. From the outset I suggested that he
was an excellent appointment as a head coach albeit I thought that his promotion to manager was premature.

I maintained always that he needed to be given two years to prove his credentials.

MidwestGun

I didnt see much difference.. in the fouls. Auba;s was higher up on the neck too.. and more dangerous but same distance from the goal by my eyes. All I ask is they be more consistent.. maybe they should do like the NFL and have a central location making all the var decisions..

AFC Forever

Australian?

Not surprised, they can’t even play cricket fairly.

Chika

AFC Forever

I also suspect Xhaka will take his place and Arteta may choose to make do with what he has until summer. I strongly believe we’ve got a shot at finishing higher than 6th and I don’t want anything to diminish that.

Really excited with the way the team is shaping up!

AFC Forever

Correction:

They can’t even play cricket.

Nelson

This 4 4 2 formation demands too much from our two senior strikers. After 30 minutes, they both slowed down and Leicester took over the match.

AFC Forever

Chika

Yes mate, agree. A team is about a sum of all parts and I think we finally have that. We will get better because we’re only a handful of games into this first eleven but there will be bumps in the road. 6th is about right but you just never know because we are only at the start of developing this team. Squad additions in the summer will play a big part in any future success. If they’re half as good as the ones last summer, well.

Bob N16

Are we hoping for a Spuds v United draw?

Guns of SF

Great win today. game was on too early for me to watch lol

Remember that, he gave it for a Chamber foul, another decision that was really hard to justify

That Saka one against Palace was insane, he wasn’t even looking at the ball, if Saka’s leg is planted, it was a potential career ender

Rich

We certainly are Bob, with plenty of red cards and snapped limbs

MidwestGun

Yep Im hoping for a draw… where it ends up both sides are angry … in the Spuds v Mancs. Plus if Spuds win big by chance.. could spell the end of OGS. Think we want him to stay around.

To my mind no, Spurs must always lose (except in those cases in the past when we were vying with manure for a title). I remember having an interesting exchange with Almunia who was more anti man utd than spurs. Depends how you come at it I suppose.

High scoring, red card and injury laden 5-4 win to the mancs after being 4 nil down would cap a good day.

T20 WC also looking promising at the moment.

Also agree on the officiating of our games. Really really is poor some of these decisions we don’t get. Very strange. Personally I think the EPL should try get more refs from Southetn England. They’re all fucking northerners and biased as fuck

Northbanker

Bob

as they sadly can’t both lose, i agree a draw is all we can hope for

Enjoying England beating up the Aussies.

I think an injury ridden 4-4 where Spuds are 4-0 up and United get back to draw with OGS hanging on!

Today was supposed to be the perfect day. Got up late. Family time. Steak for lunch. Then it was going to be the janes bond movie followed by takeaway and the match

Instead during lunch I got told about an urgent work problem and 10 hours later I haven’t finished yet. Had the game on as I worked but wasn’t able to focus on it

Clearly I missed out on a lot. I saw some incredible saves from ramsdale tho. He looked like a 50m keeper today, absolutely incredible

@ Bob N16

Totally agree with that comment. Any game we beat the Aussies at I’m happy. Tiddlywinks bowls, don’t give a hoot as long as we smash them 😆

China1

Some outrageous long balls from ramsdale as well.

I couldn’t watch closely but it looked like a 10/10 performance from him, really. Unreal save onto the post at one point and so many elite moments. Proper wow performance

If he can maintain his overall level this season his high price rate will turn out a bargain

I definitely hate Spurs more than I hate United

But the longer OGS stays in the job the better, and while I don’t think there’ll be much in it, I think we’ll edge Spurs this season anyway

In terms of practicality, a draw probably suits us best

Alumunia is one of my favourite posters, always balanced + reasonable, and his sketches were hilarious

Have to agree. There has been something very biased about PGMOl for a long time.

The 50th game was obviously fixed and every season we end it with more bad decisions than any other team. It really isn’t coincidence. Wenger warned about it after we had so many broken legs and ankles.

MidwestGun

Saw the Ramsdale interview after the match .. was pretty interesting he said in practice with England Maddison had favored his freekicks to the short side of the goal… so thats why he was shaded that way.. But he was very humble about that amazing save and then said he had given away all his kit even his boots after the match because he just can’t say no to all the kids asking him for stuff.

Love Ramsdale. His personality is beaming out of him. That was a world class performance. We have a absolutely replaced Martinez with a younger version. Every one makes mistakes on player transfers. The trick is to learn from it and correct your mistakes.

And that was a gritty performance that was needed. Now we need to slaughter Watford and go into the Liverpool game with confidence because we are going to need it.

If Ramsdale keeps this up he’ll be one of the best in Europe. So far his decision making, his distribution and his saves have been 1st class as has his attitude
