MATCH DAY BLOG: ARSENAL VS PALACE

by .

Well, here we are, the chance to go into 9th position in the league with a win against Crystal Palace.

This is the sort of high pressure / low expectations game we’ve usually not done well in under Arteta. This was the sort of game we lost last season at this stage. That needs to change tonight.

We’ll have a home crowd.

We are in decent form.

There will have been plenty of work delivered over the break.

We basically have a fully fit team to choose from bar Granit Xhaka. Yes, ever Gabriel Martinelli is back in the mixer.

The key things we’re going to be dealing with:

Wilfried Zaha is a menace and has caused is no end of problems over the years. Tomiyasu needs to be at his best this evening because if you keep Zaha quiet, you keep Palace quiet.

Their press. No doubt they are going to give it a go. Slightly harder for them to do away from home. But you know the routine. They’ll target our midfield like Brighton did. They’ll have a crack at our centre backs with some roughhousing. They will make it difficult. If we roll over and let them do it, it’ll be a tough night. But if we play through them early, then we have a good chances of making something happen. Part of doing well against the Palace press is to stop Villa doing the same on Friday.

The first game after the international break is usually a slow mover, but we can’t have that tonight. The fast starts we’ve had in most games needs to happen this evening. The fans need to be on side, the atmosphere needs to be intense, and that is partly powered by the sort of Arsenal that shows up.

Over in France, Matteo G dropped a beastly performance chalking up 2 goals and an assist. If he wasn’t such a whopper, you’d expect Arsenal to cut short his loan move this January so he could come back and support a midfield that will probably still be lacking a Granit Xhaka who is expected back into full training around then.

Finally, the return of Patrick Vieira happens tonight. Truly, one of the greatest captains that ever wore the armband. I had the luck to go from Tony Adams to Vieira. The French midfielder was something else. An absolute hero. A gladiator of the midfield. People say his technical ability wasn’t rated at the time, but that is utter nonsense. We all thought of him as far more than a bruiser. His rangy legs, tight controls, and the way he bring a ball down and beat a press was magical to watch.

Now he’s a manager. He’s finally made it to the Premier League. I hope it’s not a pleasant return outside the plaudits he’ll get from the home fans who miss his on-pitch leadership.

Right, On The Whistle Podcast will be recorded after, have a great day!

Celebrating an equaliser at home to palace like we’ve won the Champions League. Embarrasing.

This just papers over the cracks and prolongs the agony.

sly

fan boys its ok to come out now lol

Domagoj+B

Fuck this. Better we lose than hear now about mental strength etc., with us drawing against mighty palace. 1 point is still absolutely not enough, and us not having a clear plan, shooting crosses in panic in the end, I’m fed up with this shit.

Terraloon

Any objective follower of football, any follower who doesn’t view Arsenal through red and white glasses will know that this Arsenal squad are a country mile away from being top 4 contenders likewise the6 will have known that Palace are a far better team than many on here were suggesting I pointed out that Palace would cause problems but not even I thought that they would find the game as easy as it was. Far too many of the players at Arsenal, and yes they may be young ,are not going to develop into top performers. The late equaliser papers… Read more »

Samesong

4th draw with Palace since 2019.

Dissenter

Tierney needs a long spell on the bench
That’s what a proper manager will do
It’s like he’s trying to settle a grudge with Martinelli

Gazzap

Fuck Arteta survives another week. We’re a really poor team though.

Luteo Guenreira

Wow. Can you believe our luck. Wow. Way to fucking go Laca

LoveSausage

Saved by Laca. Love the little midget! He needs to start next game.

DaveB666

Fucking lucky……

Samesong

Teraloon we discussed this before the game that Palace weren’t going to be a walkover.

Habesha Gooner

It doesn’t matter whether we got a scrappy draw tonight. We need to sack this fraud. I think 8th is the best we could do with him no matter the players.

Luteo Guenreira

Laca deserved a goal though to be fair. That’s what Palace get for trying to kill time at the end.

TheLegendaryDB10

One has to be honest.

This is a heck of a plaster papering the cracks.

MuddyGooner

Played Laca but actually felt sorry for Vieira .
Arteta is a jammy sod

Domagoj+B

I know I said it already, but I’m really done with this sorry excuse for a club until mikel leaves. Also can’t stand the sight of a male model Edu, we’re not getting anywhere with him. And don’t get me started on kroenkes.

Time Up

We should be celebrating a point under the Con Artist that managing us.

Terraloon

Samesong

Yes we did but far too many thought it was an easy 3 points

TheLegendThatIsDennisBergkamp

Lower half of the table, the new norm…

Left Testicle

Started the game with a 4-1-5 formation. Selects Pepe for some strange reason.

Useroz

Tierney 95% passed back when received a pass in final third…. so un Tierney so logical to conclude he got instruction from the arteta. Commentators wondered throughout the game.

Dissenter

Terraloon

“Yes we did but far too many thought it was an easy 3 points
Who did?
There are no easy points for this Arsenal

MidwestGun

Oh man… so basically I feel exactly like I did pre match… perplexed. Its like we plan to shithouse more then dominate.. I guess thats the plan.

Laca was a boss though… pumping up the team and rescuing them… He needs to start away matches for sure.

Josip Skoblar

Arteta narrowly saved his skin.

Danny

Arteta fans will say that both Palace’s goal were scored becaue of our mistakes and that we didn’t lose so all is ok but in reality we are fuckin’ awful, horrible to watch with a manager who needs to be sacked now.

Jamie

Tomorrow’s headline:

10 points from 12 still on lads

Jacko

Well done Laca. Proper fighting spirit.

Arteta out, out……. Fucking out!

David Smith

Whatever Supposedly clever thing Arteta is trying to do, it relies on too many things going our way and is taking far too long to bed in.
We struggle against lesser but organised teams, Norwich and Burnley could have easily beaten this team, the only convincing win was when Spurs went missing for a big part of the game.

Mulerise14

Can a’body defend this performance? I really wanna believe Arteta can lead us back to where we belong….. but it is becoming clearer,he may just be our own version of a time waster…a lá Man U n Ole

Dissenter

Arteta fans have their excuses lined up when Villa gets at least a point on Friday

They will say we played two games in 4 days

Dissenter

What’s the use of HOME advantage when the manager sets up a team like that?

Chris

That was a largely bland and uninspired performance, grabbing a pin ball like goal in the dying moments of injury time to claim arguably an undeserved point. Palace will be kicking themselves for retreating so deep when they had us where they wanted us playing the way they were. The crowd seemed to react obviously happy for the quantiser but distinctly subdued for the final whistle, I suspect we would have heard a few boos had we lost. We are still largely disjointed in attack. Martinelli near the end had the ball looking to crate something with none of our… Read more »

S23

Sadly it seems the 1st half against Spurs was a fluke.
Way too many players stealing a living, they have never heard of pass and move,Pepe(who played poorly)is given the ball and no overlapping runner to pass too, same for Martinelli.
The same with the sideways and backwards passing.
Arteta has to have it reiterated to him-6th place or its time to leave, because next season it is 4th place or bust-and I cant see with performances like this us getting past 8th place for some time.

azed

Palace clearly the better team.

MuddyGooner

Come on Pedro, no more excuses ……. just admit this man isn’t right for our club

Ishola70

Lacazette had a liveliness about him when he came on. You feel he has to be involved from the off now in some of the upcoming matches. A disappointing result and a disappointing performance. The Arteta propaganda should really stop. It’s as clear as day that we are a bang average team under Arteta. It was a mistake starting Partey as an isolated midfielder. If Odegaard was meant to be his CM partner for this match it wasn’t evident. There was a warning regarding Partey in the 1st half when Palace pressed him when he was isolated all on his… Read more »

Elmo

Do we only have a good 15-35 mins to start the first half in us (Spudz/Brighton/tonight)?

It’s good that we no longer completely capitulate and enter a tailspin when we get pushed back and the pressure piles on, but it’s all workmanlike after the initial free-flowing burst at the start of the game.

2 second half goals in 8 matches so far in PL.

kristoman

Is this really arsenal fc?

UTarse

When will Pedro and his arteta pom pom posse give up this pathetic re-writing of facts ? The football is insipid, the trend is flat at best, we lack a pattern of play, we generally lack purpose in our game. It’s utter mediocrity at best, oh how the mighty have fallen now where “fans” big up palace at home to be a tough game. Don’t get me wrong, there aren’t many easy games in the premiership, but at home to a small club who have a new manager 7 games into his job, we should be doing better. Palace were… Read more »

Mr Serge

We were awful got away with that one for sure Arteta ball so sterile

Habesha Gooner

I do believe we can play better and one touch football with the right guy in charge. We would probably have a 5th league finish if he is a really good coach. And then we can go from there. But with Arteta, it is a guarantee that we will be finishing below Europa league places. And it is not because he hasn’t been given time or funds. It is because he isn’t very good at all. He is a salesman. Part of the reason why the kroenkes like him so much is because he defended them eloquently when they were… Read more »

‘Second game in a row being outplayed by a side missing their best player and the atmosphere in here is terrible tonight.’

No wonder the atmosphere is shit if you’re sitting there texting on your phone you silly cunt.

Mysticleaves

At this rate EFCC needs to be banging down Arteta’s door. The guy is a fraud. End off!! #artetaoutnow

Dissenter

Arteta is incapable of learning from his mistakes
After the calamitous tactics against Villareal last season, he’s still playing a midfield of one, like Partey carries Mjölnir, the hammer of Thor.
It’s like he’s never watched tapes of Atletico to know how to make Partey count.

Mulerise14

That guy Gallagher was there as if he lost a final, says it all…. crystal palace dropped points…. the lethargy is coming back now.

Ben D

Is there a more frustrating team to watch this season? Damn!

Useroz

We didn’t play after 10 minutes and until added time. That’s unacceptable. We see the same type of passing people bashed Emery for….. that’s passing from right to left to right via both CBs in that sickening U shape. Did we not buy White. to do vertical progression? White failed in most of his attempts passing forward and gave up.

Sambi has been well adapted to Arsenal play… having unlearned his initially forward passing and making foray into final third, and now specialises in 5 , 10 yard backpasses most times. Sad really

Swap Arteta for Viera anyone 🤣

Ishola70

To sum it all up we went 1-0 up early and not one poster on here was at all convinced by the team after about 20 minutes into the match.

Average personified.

Cannonball

Dissenter

‘What’s the use of HOME advantage when the manager sets up a team like that?’

He started with 5 attacking players. What the fuck are you on about? 2 mistakes gifted 2 goals .

Ben D

But English refs are a disgrace. That kick on Saka is as blatant a red card as you can see

Terraloon

Dissenter

No need to look further than Pedro.

Arsenal at this point in time are a mid table team . I am surprised that others see far more from this group than I do. Many of the squad are young and do have potential but far too many are overrated or in some instance their development seems to have stalled.

Still a point is a point

TeeCee

Odeargod and Pepe, both Arteta favourites, both WAY out of their depth in the PL. Tactically, Arteta is retarded, and the players show it, to a man we’re dumbfounded when we get to the edge of the box . Shocking stuff.

TheBayingMob

Get out of jail free. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200

Luteo Guenreira

“ I do believe we can play better and one touch football with the right guy in charge.”

This bit is pretty obvious but that isn’t the most frustrating thing about the support for Arteta. For me it’s mostly that the level of leadership and results he brings could easily be found/replaced/improved on by pretty much any experienced PL manager, it’s been such a pedestrian performance so far. He hasn’t earned the level of blind worship he has received from some fans but yet it has persisted.

Tom

New manager three months in the job, their best player who always gives us fits missing with illness………we play at home in front of a supporting crowd………… still get outplayed by bang average CP.

Crystal Palace are NOT a good side. Just go to 7amkickoff and read Tim’s stats on them.
It’s just that we are just about their level.
Sad.

Zambian Gunner

It’s gonna be a long season, very long boring season. Urgently need a new signing, oh I mean new coach.

Habesha Gooner

Thank you and Good night
Absolutely. Swap him a thousand times. I wasn’t that impressed with what he did with Nice in France. But his team has been fun to watch so far. Third game I saw of palace and this is not a fluke performance. They slaughtered spurs. They were unlucky to draw vs Brighton like tonight. He looks way ahead of Arteta.

Elmo

Lol Graham – you’ve got a long trip home if you still have a Victoria train to the south coast! That’s commitment.

Did you miss the equaliser to get to the Tube in time?

MuddyGooner

To late for that, Pedro is going down with the Arteta ship.

Haha, that image reminds me of the credits at the end of Captain Pugwash !

GK

This is no way to go at all. Arteta making zaha-less palace look like prime Real Madrid. Everything was wrong wt the team ds evening and it wasn’t a selection. That’s obviously the whole team playing out there. What it comes down to is a tactics/motivation problem. The players really seem to play like they got bricks tied to their legs. No freedom, too regimental. That’s how Arteta set them up to play. And it’s been like that since he took charge of this team. At this moment I think we need a change of manager. Where’s the progress in… Read more »

Frost

Crystal Palace came to the Emirates stadium & OUTPLAYED us like most teams have under Arteta. But you’re gonna wake up tomorrow to idiots spinning this to some sort of positive.

MOST TEAMS OUTPLAY ARTETA’S ARSENAL & that’s somehow okay.

He’s gonna win just enough to keep some deluded few believing that it’s all gonna magically click someday. But 2yrs with less than 5good games under this manager shows we on a slow journey to nowhere.

Markymark

The guy who got us out the hole is apparently going to be sold as apparently no good despite his brilliant body language and constant hard work – Lacazette will be sorely missed and fits our style better. Auba could have been sold for 50m and Martinelli given the boost to fill the boots over 2 seasons
Poor decisioning

Tom

“2 mistakes gifted two goals”

Some have a weird idea of what a gift looks like.
Must’ve had a hard life fella.

Graham

Elmo no saw the equaliser. Walking to Finsbury Park now. Only have to go to Reigate

Ishola70

For people that are saying Palace are good.

They are decent on their day.

Where do Palace finish in the league every season? Just around midtable or below. That’s where they will end up yet again by the end of this season.

That is what Palace do.

I can see why Pedro built up Palace though before this game. To give room for excuses for results like tonight. There should be no excuses though. Everyone saw that the overall team performance was lacking………..yet again under Arteta.

Bankz

Honestly anyone still out here defending Arteta at this point must really be seeing through a crystal glass we don’t have access to.
There is no way we are making it higher than 8th come May.
That will be 3 straight seasons of finishing below 7th.
We are super fucked.

UTarse

4 points off 4th, 5 league games unbeaten…how’s that for spin ?

Leftside

Stadium is full of fans echoing the same sentiments about Arteta. It’s only the echo chamber of some sections of Legrove and Artetas loved ones that believe he has a bright future as coach of Arsenal

Ishola70

Frost

“MOST TEAMS OUTPLAY ARTETA’S ARSENAL & that’s somehow okay.”

It’s not okay.

And Arteta’s finishing position by the end of the season is most likely going to reflect that it is certainly is not ok.

As ever with Arteta we are talking about a major turnaround for the team. Always this.

Pierre

This reminds me of the final days of Emery when Lacazette scored v Southampton in the last minute to equalise in a 2-2 draw. That goal probably kept Emery in the job and tonight Lacazette scoring has given Artera a little more time . In all honesty , i think we deserved the draw, the 2 goals we gave away were sloppy . Gabriel and white failed to engage the scorer for both goals and allowed the palace players to get their shot away. Of course losing possession in midfield didn’t help. Lacazette did well when he came on ,… Read more »

Awful watch. Years of this crap ahead of us. Killed every bit of enjoyment and hope I had in Arsenal, Arteta hasn’t a clue and just shows how far we’ve fallen when he’s allowed run our club

TheLegendaryDB10

I am at the stage wondering when this process is going to bear fruition. How long are we going to wait until we see it all click together.

By Pedro’s own admission they had plenty of time to train.

Yet, time and time again, we still get to see safe slow passing around.

There were a number of occasions where quick passing forward or switching wing would have helped us move forward but due to being too ponderous we end up missing that chance for the quick pass/ cross and end up settling for that sideways pass.

Elmo

Fair enough, Graham. Enjoy your trip home.

I think it’s the other Graham here who lives in Hastings!

James

I’ve wanted arteta to succeed but I don’t see signs of progression and 2-2 at home to palace is a poor result. We’re mid table, don’t deserve to be higher and I think that’s where we will stay. A typically unimaginative, dull performance with no signs of growth

MuddyGooner

Where is Pedro anyway ?

Left Testicle

Watch Pedro spin the f*ck out of that.

Terraloon

Ishola Palace are a decent unit and the change of managers has lead them to a rebuild. They probably will finish mid table but from what I have seen they will be pretty close to the position that Arsenal occupy come the last day of the season. But this has to be more about what sort of team Arsenal now are and whilst it’s easy to celebrate a last minute equaliser Palace were better organised, better coached and could and should have taken 3 points tonight. The Villa game will be a challenge and in truth Villa have some decent… Read more »

Leicester win against Manutd was not a demolition it was more of a lackaisical attitude from the Manutd players even Carragher and Neville attested to this on MNF. Now to the Match.. They allowed CRY to come onto them. Bar the mistakes from Lokonga and Partey for the goals, the main problem here is that the latter was quite isolated and this sets the tempo of the game going forward as other players starts to sit back. And this continued in the second half despite Lokonga’s introduction. Odeegaard isnt working with Partey in Midfield . Except for Xhaka’s ocassional switch… Read more »

Palace are nothing special at all, just like any number of organised, predictable English style teams we used to blow away, at least at home, but are now unable to deal with. Say what you like about Wenger , but these games were usually wins and goal of the season fests at home, I actually miss those days , if not other aspects about Wenger . A bit of street football is nice to watch now and again , and yes, I know teams are different now. we now struggle with Norwich , Brighton, Palace, wait until this relatively easy… Read more »

Finished club mailing it in with an incompetent fake manager. How long must we keep enduring this nightmare??? All talk with no action or fight or know how. Does anyone really love the club anymore because things aren’t changing for the better. Just keeps getting worse every passing season. Arteta and the whole setup needs to go and Kroenke needs to sell up and find a new venture. Fucking depressing.

Cannonball

Leftside apparently in the stadium spends all game posting on a blog….complains about the atmosphere.
Couldn’t write it

G8

Problems remain the same, our midfield is too weak and upfront we lack ideas
everyone remains static when they pass the ball , Lacazette with all his obvious shortcomings he tries to pass and move and get a head of the ball
I dont know what we do in training.apart from backward passing and aimless crossing
Shit football

Useroz

It’s one thing being positive, half full, can do, support the team and all… but blind to incompetence, conscious or otherwise, is an entirely different matter…

Would people put up with, excuse and tolerate novice,
incompetent , arrogant politicans doing subpar work, failing most promises/ expectations and setting worse.records, one term after another? You still vote for the person when supposedly better candidates are out there?

Left Testicle

Win, lose or draw – Arteta wasn’t going anywhere. The earliest he goes is at the end of the season, and what ‘meh’ season it’s going to be. Not good enough to compete, not bad enough to go down.

Graham62

David Smith

You’re being incredibly disrespectful.

Football has changed.

What I can tell you though is that if PV4 had been in charge of Arsenal for the past 22 months, with the same set of players, we’d be playing a far better and more productive brand of football.

I await Pedro’s spin and of course his excuses.
