ARSENAL BATTLE POST-SPURS TEMPTATION OF COMPLACENCY

by .

Let’s talk young players.

William Saliba had a run out in Europe against Galatasaray. It’s interesting to actually watch his impact on a game over a 90 versus the curated hype videos. His passing is fantastic and fairly measured. I don’t think he’s quite as ambitious as Ben White, but he has that in locker. I think his best attribute is his calmness in one vs one situations, he’s certainly no lunger. The thing he needs to work on is his passivity as a defender, I don’t mean fighting players or standing up for himself, I mean that fire that Gabriel and White have to snuff out danger and rifle into the back of players with a press as soon as a pass moves. That’ll develop, no doubt, but I think he’d have arrived there faster if he’d taken a loan in the Premier League. I’m still caught in two minds as to what was best for him… but really, hard to argue that 40 games with Marseille is better than 12 with Arsenal. He’ll come back ready to bang.

I also took in some of the U23 game against Brighton. The kids did a really good job. It’s clear that Balogun and Patino are miles ahead of everyone. Balogun pulled off an outrageous piece of skill to win a penalty and his execution was cold as ice. He’s quite a way off fighting for a first-team place, he needs a loan in Championship where he’ll get minutes, accrue some battle scars, score some goals, and adapt to the physicality he’s really lacking at the moment. Patino is a dreamy player, his movement is outrageous, he’s 3 seconds ahead of everyone else, and his passing range is simply stunning. U23 looks too easy for him. His launched pass is a thing of beauty, you just can’t believe a man of that size can hit the ball with such power. The reality is he’s a little light for the Premier League right now. A bit like Billy Gilmour was last season. He needs to fill out if he’s going to endure the rigours of the league. But he’s still very young, that’ll come, and I’m sure that’s why he’s not on the bench right now.

All three names I just mentioned are going to the first team at some point. Arsenal has so much talent coming through. The best thing about this summer strategy is the more chances we give to young players, the more elite young players will be willing to push for a move. There’s a reason Haaland went to Dortmund. He knew they’d develop him, we need to be that club for the Premier League when everyone else is sticking to older.

Arteta took a serious tone in the press conference. I think he’s likely acutely aware that there has been a little bit too much joy from the fanbase this week and the players could easily slip into complacency. Beating Spurs won’t feel quite as special if we drop 3 points at Brighton away. They are a good side, they’re where they are in the league because they deserve it, Arsenal needs to show up with energy and purpose.

The good news is Bissouma is going to be a late shout for selection. It’d be nuts for Potter to risk one of the best players in the league so early in the season, but we’ve seen crazier things. If he’s out, that’s good news for our day. They just aren’t the same team without him making things tick over.

We’re without Xhaka. His injury is serious. Young players need to step up. Thankfully, the choice this season isn’t Ceballos. The man who will likely land the nod is Sambi Lokonga. I think we’re all on board with that power move.

As you can see from Scott’s thread, Granit Xhaka is pretty decent at a few things, and knocking the ball into the final third is one of them. Sambi isn’t quite there yet, but he’s close. He has to use this next three months to adapt to the pace, sharpen his game, and make the time count. What I love about the Belgian is the ambition in his passing. He doesn’t take the easy option. He’s also far more mobile than Granit, his movement after he passes is so smart. There will also be minutes for AMN, another player that needs to make this bad news work for him. If he’s called upon, he needs to find that semi-final concentration. It’s great to have him back in contention, but this is last chance saloon, we need the best he has to offer.

The goalkeeping questions keep cropping up in the pressers. Bernd said he didn’t know why he was dropped. He’d clearly missed the regression in his passing, the lack of dominance in his box, and the mistakes. Also, Arteta said that he’d spoken to the player, which I believe. Bernd only has himself to blame here. This #1 position is now Aaron’s to lose. Let’s hope the England back-up keeper makes it count again.

What do we want tomorrow? A full force game of the new Artetaball. Nice passing combinations, some long balls, some sharp counter-attacks, some great stuff around the box… and contributions from everyone. This is a big day. The pressure of consistency is on. Are we up the challenge? We’ll see.

Tune in after the game tomorrow for an On The Whistle with Johnny and Matt. Have a great night.

I grew up in Welwyn Garden City and moved to the States 20 years ago. I just bought tickets to the Arsenal-Newcastle and Manure-Arsenal games in November. I’m taking my American 18 year step-daughter and step-son to their first Arsenal games! Putting aside the crap start to the season and Le Grove arguments over where we are as a team, I am just so damn excited to be taking my step-kids to see the Gunners play for the first time.

I know Xakha provides some important qualities, but I don’t think he’s good enough for where Arsenal want to get to. Even though they might suffer in the short term with Xakha out, I am hopeful giving AMN and Lokanga minutes will be beneficial in the future and worth the short-term loss.

It’s also more fun to watch the kids.

Seemed like there was no one here ,! My take on Granite is that Mike ,and Edu , would have happily sold him for decent money , but couldn’t get Jose to cough hard enough. Only renewed to salvage value. Sadly it meant they couldn’t justify spending on another DM , well , maybe they’d have spent on Locattelli, anyway, but he had other dreams. My point, oh dear it is late on a Friday, is that I don’t think they / WE can’t do without him. . AMN got good minutes under Sam, , and Sambi looks promising if… Read more »

Let’s hope that our new focus on player character will pay some dividends. We’ve been suffering mentally weak players for almost ten years. The sort of characters you couldn’t trust to maintain a consistent level of application over a string of games. If this bunch is different, now is the time to show it.

Words on a blog

Expat,

Really hope that you and your step-kids enjoy the two games!

Words on a blog

Pedro,

I know you don’t rate him (I remember something you said something about him being a “spreadsheet warrior” in the past), but 7am kickoff posted an interesting take on where Brighton are at the moment.

His analysis shows that, just as Brighton massively underperformed their XG last season, they are massively overperforming this season, and have had the benefit to date of a pretty benign fixture list.

We really should be able to get a decent result against them tomorrow.

Spudnik

Pedro,
Tomorrow is big in consistency terms. I never imagined I’d be saying that about Brighton. Johnny in the podcast was right when he said we’ve been here before with Arteta, but you know what, I think this is a massive opportunity for him and these young guns to forge ahead and get some momentum. They put the rabble that are spurs to the sword under the pressure of the NLD, it’s now time to grow with some juicy away points. I think they’ll do just that.

Barnsbury

Xhaka has bounced back into the first team on several occasions following acts of blatant stupidity, and outrageous disrespect towards opponent, teammate, manager and fan alike, so he’s clearly got some kind of massive charisma and influence and skills of the sort that keep him going as a jobbing professional in spite of it all – and on his day I would say he can at best achieve a 7.5 out of 10 for performance, but underlying all of it….; ….the geezer has NEVER been of the right temperament and quality to start in the middle of the park, or… Read more »

Is it fair to say that Brighton’s Neal Maupay might have had a greater impact on Arsenal than any non-Arsenal player in the last 5 years? Think what an incredible chain reaction his nasty cheap shot foul on Leno had on our future. -Martinez comes in and is instrumental in our F.A Cup win. -This sets off a rivalry for the number one keeper spot, which Arteta is unwilling to guarantee to either player -Martinez requests a transfer and we agree to it in part because we need to use those funds towards the Partey signing. -Arsenal sign Runar Alex… Read more »

Brighton looked quite stationary without Bissouma on Monday.

It’ll be down to us to score first so that it’ll drawn them out. If they score first then I fear it’ll be a long afternoon (in the US).

Come on arsenal

In the wenger days we’d always follow up a great win with a complacent defeat.

None of that please. 3 points by hook or crook. Good performance preferable but optional

Saladin

Wait is there another international break after Brighton? We just had one after City away. We better get the 3 points otherwise I am going to be pissed for two damn weeks.

Just Another Customer

it may sound too negative but I’m wary of complacency since we went 3-nil in 30 minutes last weekend

in my mind there must always be some kind of blowback to things lol I need to check myself to a shrink

Tony

Pedro I agree Saliba potentially has a very high ceiling and his temperament is not really in question when you read others’ comments on him. When it was first reported we were buying White and I looked into the player my immediate thoughts were he’s got DM written all over him. I had hoped we’d bring Saliba back in as RCB and White start at DM. Now Tomi is functioning well from his early showing and can only integrate better, my resolve is to see a back 4 of Tomi – Saliba – Gabs – CT with White as DM… Read more »

Damn, I forgot. The Maupay foul also jump-started Guendouzi’s meltdown and lead to him being frozen out. How could I forget that?! On that subject, still think Maupay broke a code by discussing what Guen said publicly. Trash talking goes on all the time in football. Sure, if it’s a racist comment then the player should inform the club to make an official complaint but this was just Guen shooting his mouth off about how much money he made. Obnoxious, but I’m sure worse has been said between players during games.

Tony

Pedro you notice I didn’t hit you with flip flopping on Saliba — oh shit I just did it.

It’s what drew me to your post. Clever use of click bait Saliba is like Pierre baiting the Ozil oe Wenger hook and getting plenty of bites.

Fun to watch, though.

Tony

BIG
You mean like Materazzi and Zidane?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvNkkdfNwEg

“What did Materazzi say to Zidane in Italian?”

“After the third clash, I frowned and he retorted: ‘I’ll give you my shirt later’. I replied that I’d rather have his sister than his shirt.” So they’re the words from Materazzi that made Zidane see red when the entire world was watching his every move.

Part of defenders jobs is to wind up the forwards so much they lose their edge.

Major_Jeneral

Good Post Pedro.

I am confident that Arteta would have cautioned the team about being complacent. The NLD win was just the beginning of something new. In order to keep the momentum it is crucial that the agreession, commitment is topnotch.

Partey and Auba knows this and so I expect them to lead the group on the field of play. The minimum we demand is a great performance. All the best to the team. Always Forward.

Nigel Tufnel

I think the idea of Ben White as a dm is interesting. His passing quality already would have him as great in that regard for a dm, but I think maybe you’re aiming too low. If he can be an above average CB defensively (big IF, but so far so good…. let’s not crucify him, or Ramsdale when they make an error that leads to a goal, PLEASE), …with his ability to move forward from defense and distribute those passes, as he is already doing, makes a huge contribution for a central defender, something very special. As a dm, he… Read more »

About who could take Xhakatin place in the midfield, feel Sambi has broken the non Negotiable speaking of how he felt disrespected waiting to come on during City game. Looks like a long spell in Coventry a la Martinelli to curb his ambition, unless the Leopard has changed his spots. That is akin to breaking a bull to get used to an yoke. First you crush his testicles. Comes easy to the Matador clansman.

Nigel Tufnel

Watching Saliba, the thought occurs also that if you wanted to find more minutes to split between White, Saliba, and Gabriel, Saliba can also get games at cb if White were to give occasional rest to Tomiyasu, instead of Cedric. Having 3 great cb’s can be a great problem to have. White’s versatility makes it possible.

The BigBen

Would be very interesting to see how Arteta tweaks his lineup today against a very impressive Brighton side, I know most people would say Lokonga is the man to naturally take Xhaka’s place but I wouldn’t be surprised if Arteta goes with Odegaard instead of Lokonga and plays Smith-Rowe in Odegaard’s usual position, I mean Odegaard is like a combination of our 3 best CM of last decade put together (Ozil + Santi + Ramsey) and he is the best to play deep lying midfielder than everyone else in the squad (if he’s not playing upper the pitch) but I… Read more »

Nigel my view of White as CB is not much of an improvement on Holding. Holding better in the air and White better on the ball. He can be a decent CB, but he’ll need to bulk up a bit in the right areas. Not too big but more muscle for the instant power Gabs has. I’d keep Holding snd take a serious look at Mavs for progression and ceiling. Then make a call. Saliba has always had that something you can’t put into words for me. All good points Tony, I’d only differ in that you’re undervaluing White’s ability as a passer from defense. It’s what sets him apart, what we paid for, and it’s more than just good. But I do agree, imagine him as a dm against the top teams. It gives the manager a great option.

Lets go Arsenal!
We going to beat up Brighton tomorrow
3 -1 arsenal

Northbanker

Hoping to see the game today but ship has just sailed into Barcelona and it’s an all-dayer

So in meantime thoughts have turned to the possibility that we may only need to sign absolutely outstanding starlets in the future and rely on more Hale Enders to build the squad

I love watching the u23s and occasionally the u18s. I know we’ve been there before but you live in hope with these kids

Guns of SF

Im not so sure as White as a DM,
you need to power and foot speed. He seems to lack both.
He does not come close to a Bissouma… which we should still be after to be honest

China1

For now I think no need to consider White at DM but if Saliba is all that then we can see what to do

Sid

Except for Ngolo Kante, good DMs tend to be tall athletic tough looking Africans

Northbanker

White may give us that DM option but see Partey developing that role in a more ball playing role as being more interesting. Lokonga might also be an option in in that role. Saliba should give us more CB options next season which we will need if we’re back in Europe

Emergence of Patino as a deeper CM to link with Partey / Lokonga is one for possibly even next season

Left Testicle

?

Tony

Nigel, I wasn’t really: there are always trade offs in life and White’s is what he lacks aerially he excels on the ball better than others.

It’s why he’d make a good DM with his reading of the game. Abilities he can make up for loss of speed/acceleration.

It’s what annoys me on his price. He’s a 35m at best now.

However, his potential versatility could well make up the financial shortfall with White’s value in the next 2 years.

Early days yet.

I don’t see white as a Defensive midfielder at all. He might have played there for Brighton but being a midfielder and a defender is completely different things. When you are a CB, all of the game is in front of you. But if you are a DM, you have to constantly check 360 degrees to play the game. And from the little that I have seen of white, he is not great facing his own goal. As posted previously the price is whatever the club is prepared to sell at. White at £50m and ready to play may yet prove better value than Saliba at £28m and not ready for at least 3 years

Northbanker

And better value than Pepe at £72m and at best drifting in and out of games with the odd dangerous moment

Tony

Northbanker I wasn’t really making a fuss about him being overpriced just that, he was and if he improves his versatility the loss will be made up. Let’s not kid ourselves here, NB, White was way over priced for a CB with poor aerial skills and good feet. £50m should buy both skills with a potential elite ceiling that a great coach can get out of the player. Apples and Oranges bringing Pepe into the argument. Pepe has just been played in the wrong position by a very poor manager. Getting serious pacy Pepe to hug the touchline in a… Read more »

Gabriel + White are the youngest central defensive partnership in the PL

Our keeper is 23, right back 22, left back 24

I think we should remember Tomyasu is more than capable at CB. At the moment we have limited quality back up at RB or RWB so Tomy as CB seems less of an attractive option. In the next 12 months I would be keen to ‘tidy up’ our defence; out with Holding(too slow), Chambers( too slow, jack of all, master of none), Soares. If Saliba returns then our CBs would look excellent- we would have no problem playing a defensive three, with KT able to play LCB if needed, Tomy, Saliba, Gabriel, White all fast, ball playing players. Arsenal have currently the makings of a decent starting eleven based on the team we sent out last Sunday. However, the club needs realistically at least 18-20 players in the squad who are good enough to rotate for injuries and resting who are of the same quality. At the moment I think that we fall short of that requirement by three or four players. I would hope that over the next two transfer windows that process will be completed. The obvious requirement will be to replace Leno and Lacazette. Other players who are likely to leave the club are Chambers,… Read more »

Have to say I had no idea what to think about buying Ramsdale other than the obvious Emi issue. I like his all or nothing commitment to commanding his area and keeping play moving. Ramsdale looks to be a quicker decision maker than Leno that, even in 10ths of seconds can mean the difference to keeping the ball out or in the goal. I love winners whatever their goals are. Ramsdale is a trier, so that’s all that matters with the hell he’s been through between the sticks. He’ll not want to go through that again. Ramsdale’s sure to have… Read more »

To clarify the point about Centre Backs. The club needs realistically three players good enough to “start”. At the moment we have got two in White and Gabriel. The fact that Leno is angry at being demoted is quite astonishing.

Firstly, it proves he has no self-awareness.

Finally, going public has done it for me. Keep looking in that mirror grooming yourself Bernd and start planning your future away from the club.

Tony

Graham I’d be surprised if it wasn’t the same griping that got Emi to think stuff this 10 years of grafting with the carrot just unreachable after seizing his chance and then some. Leno didn’t go public that time and shortsightedly did this time adding zero value to his cause. Arteta should very diplomatically tell Leno to fight or go, as he had been backed previously and not delivered. Third best defence last season doesn’t ask questions of the defence, does it? Along with the deserved attention on Charlie Patino, apparently Tim Akinola, 20, also played excellently in the middle of the park for the U23s last night. Obviously there’s a big step between that level and the first team but hopefully we’ll get to see these players in action soon.

Not at all true. Ramsdale is a big upgrade. Did you watch Leno with the ball last season? Leno is a great shot stopper but he was one of the reasons we was poor playing out. He was also not as vocal. The passion Ramsdale shows when defenders make good clearances is really infectious & you need that with young players. Great signing

Samir

Ramsdale is ABSOLUTELY an up[grade on Leno. What are you guys smoking?

MUCH better communication, commands his area and actually catches the ball. MUCH better distribution….
Maybe Leno is slightly better at reflexes but Ramsdale is young and has time to get even better.

Ramsdale + Leno competing is a healthy place for Arsenal to be

Leno will likely want to move on soon

The biggest mistake we could make is to not sign an adequate replacement, who’ll push Ramsdale all the way

The last thing we need is another player entering the comfort zone

If one of our keepers goes to sleep, then they need to know they’ll be spending some time on the sidelines

We need direct competition + cover, and a ruthless meritocratic squad system

Samesong

People are so knee jerk. I rate Ramsdale and never said a bad word against him. I prefer him to Leno, But we are talking about a coach that tinkers around with the team alot.

Jamie

Samesong is an absolute bedwetter, am I right superfans?

Pierre

For a full back, Tomiyasu’s ability in the air is a bonus as besides being a very good pacey full back with great attitude, he rarely loses a ball in the air from open play and from set pieces he is stationed at the near post….looks a great buy who just maybe needs to work on the offensive side of his game to become one of the best full backs in the league. .
