JOY JOY JOY

by .

I spent the day listening to all the great podcasts, reading all the blogs, and even venturing over to some Spurs Youtubers that were most entertaining.

‘WE PLAY LIKE BAGEL FC, FAM’ one of my favourite lines.

I particularly loved The Arsenal Vision Podcast opening statements, do check them out.

Everyone seems to have bought into the project now. That’s a big shift from where we were a few weeks ago and the club has to be applauded for moving on the loose threads.

Everyone knows what we’re doing.

We can’t be City or Chelsea, so we have to go the path that is the smartest. That’s signing established young players about the bang. Does that get to CL glory as fast as signing 5 Jack Grealish’s? No. But we can’t afford to be that club moving forward. The problem with that strategy is the expense. Jack Grealish is a now player, in 3 years time, he’ll be fading out. We’ve had a crack at that approach, what did we learn? We can’t afford to hit Jack G levels, but we can afford older more experienced players… and it doesn’t work.

Arteta and his team are working hard to bring the fans into the process. We are part of it, whether you like it or not, and the manager knows that this whole vision fails if he doesn’t have us onside. YankeeGunner read into the end of the game a little hard, but it was pertinent that all 6 of the summer signings were on the pitch after the 90. I think the rest of the team was made up of players he’d given deals to. What does that say? This is Arteta’s team now.

The overarching theme of it all is joy. I’ve penned a piece about the meaning of Arsenal for The Gooner, which you must buy to read. But one of my themes is joy. Arsenal fans control the narrative. We decide if we want to back an idea or shit on it. We have decided that we will control our mood this season. We won’t cave to the attention seekers. We won’t cower to our inner demons and give up like the meek. We’ll show up and get behind this group of young players who are outrageously likeable.

I’m a Ramsdalian, no doubt. I watched that 90 back. He’s electric, as Dissenter in the comments said, he’s a bit of a showman. We’ve needed that. Leno is a top keeper, but he’s a bit meek. Tomiyasu, what a fucking player. Arteta bought in outrageous specificity with him. He wanted a right back that could play centre back so he could tuck in and support long balls over the top. The move was pure genius. No one is crying over James Maddison because Odegaard is going to prove a better signing. Ben White just quietly got on with dominating Harry Kane. We can now look back on our signings from last season and say… maybe there were some good ones? Gabriel looks like our best centre back, dominant, great at passing, far calmer on the ball. Thomas Partey is a top 3 midfielder in the league.

I don’t even need to sell you on the Hale-Enders… but one thing I will say: Arteta rolled out AMN, not Mo Elneney. That is progress. We’ve shifted out 30 odd players in 2 years. We’ve promoted from within. Signed very young players from all over the world. We just won a NLD Derby with the youngest ever starting 11.

Are things looking up? They might be.

Short one today. Check out our podcast. Small not on that, we ranked 55 for Sports podcasts in the UK this week. That is huge for us considering how good the podosphere is. Podcasting is a different level of commitment and it is absolutely painful to build an audience. So thank you for sticking it out as we searched for a formula and thank you to Johnny and Matt for making the shows so much fun.

…. and yes we’re still basking in the glory.

Damn right I’m still basking…. 🙂

Another huge positive is that the players we’ve signed this summer are already contributing to a great extent without needing the usual “EPL adaption period”.

Pierre

How good would it be to have a player like this who could come in and replace smith rowe or Saka as they tire…willock is made for the way Arsenal play now, put him in the inside forward position and he would score 20 a season….unstoppable

The young team looks better than Haalandless BVB. Dortmund has a good reputation of catching them young

With more time training during the week instead of worrying about Apoel Haifa, I believe we can make big strides. Win or lose, I think the fans just want performances that they can support; a season that gives hope to the coming years. They want to see players progressing and growing in skill, stature and becoming world class footballers. If we get to Europe, that’ll be a bonus.

NJ Gooner

I’m ambivalent: still enjoying the victory but looking on enviously at today’s Cite – PSG game. Longing for us to get back in the game with the big clubs.

Let’s hope that Arteta can take us there sooner rather than later. But if it’s three years then that’s an awful long time when you reach a certain age!

Dat guy Pepe

Can’t wait for that night the commentator will say, “ladies and gentlemen, Arsenal are back in the Champions league and the Emirates stadium is rocking for their first home game. And damn, do they look good in their famous red and white strips. Kierran Tierney leads this side which has gone beyond everyone’s expectations and I don’t think anyone will dare discount the kind of challenge they’ll mount this season. Fasten your seat belts boys and girls. Grab your beers, pop corns and get ready to be entertained”

One thing is for sure: the Arsenal crowd at the Emirates showed that JOY you speak of. They were fully and vociferally behind the team and the manager.

On here, I am not so sure.

With the Amazon doccie in play one could be forgiven for believing that there was a Hollywood scriptwriter involved in the opening scene of Act 1. And if so, no doubt there will many twists and turns before a climactic end to the season.

The Bard

Im all for the current joy even if its based on one game. The problem with the ‘long term’ argument is its rubbish. There is no long term in football these days. If we have a good season and I hope we do, the vulture will come sniffing ( see Grealish) They will make offers for players that turn heads. If you want to play CL or get paid serious money you move to a better club than Arsenal. We had it to some extent under Wenger when we were in the CL. We lose ESR and Saka and we… Read more »

They were and they will be if this continues. No one hates a coach or player in person. It was the poor decisions earlier which made us (at least me!) Not like Arteta. It was poor football and bad team selections. Last couple games looks better. We are all behind Arsenal. If this continues, we are/will be behind Arteta too. NJ Gooner. You still got a good memory for an old guy then. I Can’t remember the last time we went into a CL clash with a big hitter without gnawing anxiety of a brutal humiliation. I’d happily wait 3 years to go toe to toe with the big money.

Pierre

Many(not me) did take playing on the champions league for granted..

Maybe people now understand what Wenger meant when he said qualifyimg for champions league is as good as a trophy.

Wenger does tend to be right as will be proven with his 2 year world cup theory

JP

The Bard….cheer up.

By definition of a good season we end up either back in the CL or at least EL.

If its CL why would the players want to move? If its EL and other big clubs come sniffing and, as example, ESR and Saka want to leave then we have them tied down to 2026 (ESR) and 2024 (Saka) so they will have to pay big money.

Would hate to lose them but you take the money and re-invest like Liverpool did.

Habesha Gooner

Pierre Wenger’s fault lies in the fact that he was finishing 4th in a league where there were 3 good teams at the end if his reign. Man United were in a long decline after Fergie left. Liverpool weren’t that good until klopp showed up ( one season also with rodgers) and the only teams that were good back then were oil clubs City and Chelsea. I agree, getting top 4 now is an achievement. But it wasn’t when Wenger was in charge. He didn’t have to compete with the level of top teams that are on show this season.… Read more »

Most of us thought you were Pedro Positive Pete – unless your post is a clever double bluff!

Anyway seems to be stories Brighton might be down half their team at the weekend including their ex Arsenal star and their next future Arsenal star.

Words on a blog

Like others, I miss the ChampionsLeague.

I don’t really miss the Europa, though, and I’m delighted we don’t have to appear (I refuse to use the word “compete”) in the new Europa Conference League.

More time in the training ground should help to drill a few more “automatisms” into this group of players.

Also, for the first time in ages, the squad looks reasonably well balanced, even if a touch light in central midfield.

Hopefully we can now move on, get some consistency, properly compete, and get back to the Champions League for next season.

Leftside

We have to keep the majority of the 11 that started on Sunday fit and we could make a charge for the CL places.

Saladin

Xhaka out for 1.5- 2months apparently. Could this be a blessing in disguise? I sound like a proper cunt saying that because he played pretty good against Spurs this weekend.

Spudnik

Pedro,
I also think that the joy on the faces of the club’s staff around London Colney this week will be a huge boon to the moral of this young team, especially after the rockin reception they got at the Emirates on Sunday.
There’s a freshness now around Arsenal that I haven’t seen for years. 30 players out? That’s a lot of deadwood.

Karaul

I really look forward to midfield duo Partey – Patino in lets say .. two years? Replace Auba and Laca during that time with young CF and we have great team for next 5, 6 years. Dont really care about Xhaka injury – we can play with Pepe And Odegard or moře defensive way with Lokonga.

Johng

If Xhaka is out for a month or two he will be missed as I do believe we are still a little light in midfield. Sambi could well take his place and do well as he has already shown but we all know Partey has been a bit fragile since he has joined us and without another good midfielder to bring on to rest Jim we might be in trouble

Johng

Him not Jim, don’t know any Jim’s currently playing in the midfield

Karaul

What you mean another good defender Jim? What about Faraon Elneny?!

Johng

Elneny and Amn are a step down from Partey Xhaka and Sambi in my opinion

Ernest Reed

Everyone is still basking in the joy of Sunday past. As usual our resident stick in the mud cant find similar joy so he resorts to where he always does, in the Wengerverse of etheral bliss. Suck in the ether laddy, suck it in for all the good that it will do ya!

Tom

Ramsdale has been a revelation and whatever hype about him there was, it’s proving to be well deserved so far. Looks very much in Emi’s mold so this seems to be very much Arteta the arsonist/ firefighter case. White, for me, not quite there yet. I mean, he’s been ok but it seems like because his signing was getting trashed by many before he even kicked the ball , now he’s getting accolades for doing the basics most CB are required to do without much fanfare. There’s a difference between winning an aerial duel against a CF who’s trying to… Read more »

Never took playing in the Champions League for granted, just never liked the way the club capitulated so easily post the group stages over the years…An absolute Wenger Hallmark of never quite reaching perceived potential and getting found out by better managed clubs.

Johng

Yes Tomiyasu was a real under the radar great find

Raulishuss

Maybe niles can become our bissouma? If he doesn’t eleborate and becomes complecent he can become a good foil for partey. A little less technical but more athletic and good for recovries and defensive duels. I’ve been impressed lately, hope he’s becoming mature. He can be a very very useful player.

bacaryisgod

Pedro

‘We’ve shifted 30 odd players out in two years’

Where did you get that number from Pedro?

Ernest Reed

I sincerely hope these Alexis return to Arsenal rumours are just that, rumours. Don’t want him anywhere near the club, the selfish malcontent.

Venga, Dani

Still buzzing for sure. The one thing though is central midfield depth. Think if Partey goes out of the team there is a huge drop off of how we play. That’s got to be addressed.

Raulishuss

Tbh i’ll prefer a partey-niles pairing vs livepool, chelsea and man c to any duo at the club.

Johng

Ernest Surely after the Willian transfer we wouldn’t be stupid enough to bring in a player on a downward trajectory even if he did score quite a few goals for us in his first stint

Tom

“”‘We’ve shifted 30 odd players out in two years”

Where did you get that number from Pedro? “”

Arteta’s talking points in one of his pressers

Chris

I loved Sanchez, the best version of him was the player I based myself on when I actually played football. Tenacious, direct, high work rate and explosive moments aplenty.

I’d rather stick to his best of goals for Arsenal on YouTube than see a return however. It’s a shame how it ended for him here, but I don’t bear him any grudges.

Muppetman

How the hell do we end up playing on a Monday night on 18th Oct then the Friday against Villa? Surely they could’ve scheduled it better

zacharse

i count 15 or so ‘shifted’ over the last 2 years

Muppetman

While the win was good we now need to be consistent. That result means bugger all if we go on and lose a couple of games in the next five. Let’s not parade Arteta as the all conquering hero quite yet.

Chris

Absolutely still buzzing about the Spurs game still, obviously. We have to bottle this buzz, both in terms of the fans (important we stick behind the team after the next bad result) and the team with this new found confidence. They need to keep the faith in themselves when things aren’t going to plan, knowing they can produce a performance like they did against Spurs. To that end the Brighton game will be very interesting, and a big test. They showed their own steely determination last night not giving up until the very last and are a very good footballing… Read more »

if i remember right White hit Auba from his own box on the edge of puds’ and auba had a bad touch. that was the pass of a defender who if not already, will def be worth 50m in the near future. won’t be surprised if he pulls something like 5 assists with boots like that

Mark

Whoever had the mentoring chat with Mikel over the interlull did a great job. Arteta may have an eye for a signing. Long rest as no Europe is great.

Pierre

Leftside “We have to keep the majority of the 11 that started on Sunday fit and we could make a charge for the CL places.” Yeah Gary Neville said something similar. Personally, I’d prefer it if we continue to play through the middle of the pitch and continue to only cross the ball from open play when we are within the width of the penalty as per our 1st and 2nd goals v Tottenham.. No more horse shoe passing along the back line from one touchline to the other, no .more of saka ,pepe, amith rowe receiving the ball on… Read more »

Zacharse That glorious ball was from Partey, not white. I genuinely believe we won’t miss Xhaka. If we had signed any of Koopmeiners, Guimaraes, Bissouma or Anguissa, we would have been a force in midfield. Bissouma and Guimaraes would have cost 30 mil and I would have understood after all the spending. But Koopmeiners moved for nearly as much as what Roma offered for Xhaka around €15 mil. And now you guys will see how much of a killing Atalanta will do on him. They will double their money in the next few years. Anguissa also moved serie A table… Read more »

Pierre

Did you take for granted that Arsenal stood no chance of winning the CL? I did in the last years of Wenger’s reign when his blind egotism took over. And when I asked on here ‘Why bother to enter a competition when you have no chance of winning, the answer was invariably, ‘It’s the money, man, the money.’

Far better to stay out for how ever long it takes to build a side that stands a chance off winning the competition. In my view, that kind of approach defines what an elite club is.

Habesha Gooner

And If we have bad results, it won’t be because we are missing our “Lynchpin Maestro” in midfield.

englandsbest

Pierre

Oh my, another one who contradicts himself within minutes.

Do you believe that losing habitually – and KNOWING that you will lose – breeds confidence?

Dissenter

Pierre is a centrist here now, better to avoid trying to nitpick his posts every time.

“Far better to stay out for how ever long it takes to build a side that stands a chance off winning the competition. In my view, that kind of approach defines what an elite club is.

How are you going to attract top players and pay for them when you’re out of Europe perpetually?

Where’s Wenger Eagle?

Is he in forced isolation until his boy, Sancho decides to step up to a competitive league?

Not down with celebrating Xhaka being out for 2 months. Partey is now even more important, absolutely need him injury free. Big worry there since he hasn’t shown that yet at Arsenal. Elneny and AMN are good for some drudge work but either one will probably be worst option in the entire 11 on the ball. Behind even the GK and CBs. Opposition can just sit on Partey and let AMN turn the ball over or Elneny pass it back and put everyone under pressure. Big opportunity for Lokonga though. He has the game but understandably seems to lack defensive… Read more »

As Pedro said, it is Arteta’s team now. So maybe it is time for the nay-sayers (they are the ones that live with their parents, have ordered FIFA 22 and watch #Lee Gunner videos) to wipe the slate clean. Forget about Artetas mistakes, forget about the FA cup. His team played its first game Sunday. Lets sense prevail.

Habesha Gooner

Dissenter It was obvious Sancho was going to struggle in his first season in the premier league. He is a good player but I don’t believe he will have as much impact as a Grealish or a Sterling. He isn’t powerful like a mane or very quick like an eden hazard either. And he is a bit weak defensively. He would have killed it in Laliga or Serie A though. I am still not writing him off but the premier league is a different beast. I think Greenwood will have a much better impact on United’s results this season than… Read more »

One of the key moves on the wknd was dropping Pepe and moving Saka to the right side. Everything seemed to click. I just don’t see how you justify tinkering with that lineup and formation to try to shoehorn Pepe back in. I’m convinced that we really don’t need him but how do you put a $70 Mil asset on the bench.

Leon Bailey seems to be adjusting well to the premier league, a lot better than Sancho.

Is centrist your word for a fence-sitter?

I take it you mean ‘attract the players you want’. Quite clearly Arteta has pretty much done that.

If by ‘top’ players you mean ‘the most expensive’, then in or out of Europe, ManC, Chelsea, PSG , R Madrid (of old), etc will beat us to that. But after Ozil, who wants them anyway

If by ‘perpetually’ you mean ‘for ever’ then I have news for you: Arteta will have us back in CL soon enough.

Matt B

Pedro, Matt and Johnny: Brilliant podcast, thoroughly enjoyed it

— thank you

Tom

“Is centrist your word for a fence-sitter?“

Since when calling strikes and balls for what they are and without bias is fence sitting?

Half the time the things you say on here about Arteta wouldn’t be out of place from a five year old in a playground my dad is better than your dad pissing contest.

Chris

“ We were never going to win the champions league with AW”

Well we were only 14 minutes away you know…

But I get what you mean, if you are taking about the latter era Wenger efforts at the competition. Not getting past the last 16 for 7 years in a row was disappointing.

Chris

Meant to say that the 5-1 at Inter probably the best memory for me in the CL. If only we had seen off Chelsea that season. We would have won it.

Tom

Yea, where’s Weagle and CC?
Arsenal won three in a row, shouldn’t CC be back by now?

T

Quietly wondering if this current team is already strong enough to finish top4..

I think we can cope with a couple of big injuries this year in midfield and attack..

I guess the season is really riding on the fitness of our new back5. If they keep playing week in week out I can see us finishing top4. If 1 or 2 gets a long injury it will cost extra points..

Bradybunch

Taylor . Given that most of his squad have been available since Cite, I’d say count the last 3 games. I’m really pleased that this team can win ugly aswell as in scintillating fashion. Let’s not have the Seagulls Nick our ice cream.

Venga, Dani

Just looked back at highlights and boy oh boy did Ben White get lucky. Gave away a pretty clearcut pen against Kane that wasnt called. Lost one of Kane’s runs and I dont know how Harry missed the target from that chance.

On another day Ben White is responsible for 2 goals

Ernest Reed

Xhaka out 8 weeks is a blow to the club. Whether you like or dislike him you have to recognize his overall importance to the club in terms of leadership. Time for others to step up and take the opportunity (AMN, you awake finally?).

MidwestGun

Hey y’all How’s … things? TH 14 on the American TV Champions League coverage.. Still love that dude. Man I miss him in the Red and White.

Anyiow….. Love that you get the poll results instantly, now. Peds. Good improvement.! I put my 2 cents worth in.

MidwestGun

I never want to see a player injured.. Even Xhaka. But in the long run it might be a good thing for the team..development.. It will force the integration of Loko and most likely AMN a little sooner. We are a little light in midfield. But we might see ODE sitting deeper at times to help out.

Rumors linking us to Weston Mckennie of Juventus.. Yes please! all for that.

MidwestGun

Nkunku is on fire in the CL.

tunnygriffboy

We will miss Xhaka. We a very young exciting team . We will have tough moments. Will need his experience and shit housery.

At this point in time Saka is adapted to the league and doing better. And he is suited to the league due to being more robust and physically well equipped.

Anyway that is a shocking tackle by debruyne. He should be off.

Habesha Gooner

Wow he didn’t get red carded. How is that possible? He might have ended his career right there.

MidwestGun

Yep… I thoght it looked like a Red on KDB too..

Habesha Gooner

How much do you want to bet if that was an Arsenal player, he would get sent off right on the spot.

MidwestGun

That’s the thing that drives fans crazy .. there is no consistency. Clear as day ankle breaker… no red card.

Habesha Gooner

This tackle made Xhaka’s tackle on Cancelo look like a normal foul that happens every day though. I don’t know in what world that isn’t a clear and dangerous play. It is ridiculous KDB is still playing.

salparadisenyc

On the footballing front scoreline really flattering PSG forgot Messi was even on pitch in that first 45.

Dissenter

Bernado Silva should have his wages docked for the week

For me Verrati is out playing Messi. But PSG generally are flat as hell everytime I see them play… compared to the hype. It’s not clicking.

Dissenter

Idrissa Gueye seems to have found his scoring boots late in his career
He can’t stop scoring belters to the top corner now.

Tom

“It is ridiculous KDB is still playing.“

Because he is KDB.

Not sure if it’s right or wrong but serial offenders do get a harsher treatment.

Also not sure the timing of “if this was Xhaka “ is the best considering he get away with quite a lot yesterday without even a booking, especially his clumsy tackle on Ndembele that started out with a slap to the face.

salparadisenyc

Don Simeone has the perfect moment to figure his attack out playing against 10 man Milan a goal down. Felix just subbed on for Trippier w/ De Paul, Griezmann, Cunha and Lemar on the bench.

R.S.P.C.Arsenal

Reality check
Another good talent we let go , Donnell malen scores again…

He’s gonna be big

salparadisenyc

Croydon De Bruyne makes that pass.

Habesha Gooner

Tom
Serial offender or not that was a red card challenge by the rule book. Xhaka will always do dumb things. But it doesn’t matter if KDB did that for the first time.

PSG do look flat though. Handling the Ego of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe at the same time will be tough. Suarez was a team player and he knitted them together. Mbappe is a more selfish player. The MNM looks great on paper but it has to work as a system.

tunnygriffboy

If Xhaka made tackle KDB made he’d be off
