YOUNG ARSENAL TEAM SHOW UP FOR BURNLEY FIGHT AND WIN

by .

Arsenal showed up to Burnley away and put up a fight to be proud of. The oldest team of brutes in the Premier League did exactly what they always do… they battled, threw long balls at our defence, and they worked the second balls like demons. Arsenal were more than a match for them and they showed the sort of character that gets the fans moist at the loins.

The difference on the day was a Martin Odegaard freekick. After 2 seasons of watching David Luiz sky shots into the car park, it was a relief to see the young Norwegian place a freekick over the wall to break the deadlock.

The toughest part of the day was watching the clunkiness in the final third. We’re just not quite there when we break. The positions we’re taking up are good, the distance we’re out isn’t far, but it’s apparent that we’re not a well-oiled machine yet. The players are too good for that to remain the case for much longer. But it needs work.

Burnley don’t make it easy for you. The grass is a bit longer, they don’t water the pitch, and they close down space really well which makes it hard to play behind the lines. That didn’t stop us having a crack, but everything was a little bit off. Our players, when breaking at speed, were playing balls a little bit behind the runners. Some of the decision making in the box was very average. We didn’t make enough of our shots.

The Hale-Enders didn’t have their best day out. I thought ESR was off the pace most of the game and he struggled with the physicality. Saka has been off all season, he’s clearly struggling with a Euros hangover, but it’ll come. Bergkamp came back from the World Cup in 1998 and he was very poor for a while until he broke his duck with goals against Aston Villa. This is our reality though, we have a lot of young players who are going to be in and out with form. What I love is that our fans are on fire this season. Now they understand the path we’re on, they are backing the kids, because getting on their backs isn’t going to help anyone.

Defensively, we were really very good when you consider that 60% of the players are new. The boring droning of fans throwing shade at our summer has been ‘BEN WHITE IS SHORT AND CAN’T HEAD THE BALL HE IS ALSO GOING TO GET BULLIED BECAUSE HE IS PRETTY.’ Well, that didn’t really work out. He won 4 of 7 duels and he made 6/6 headed clearances. That was a better percentage than Gabriel, who was also excellent. Oddly, Ben White’s problem was on the ground, he was caught out a few times and he made a few uncharacteristic erroneous passes.

Gabriel was a man-monster. He matched Burnley’s strikers for brutality all day. He was absolutely dominant. He’s a great counter to Ben White and I’m sure the partnership they are about the form is going to be very exciting. Tomiyasu won 4/4 of his aerial duels. He’s some player. To adapt to the Premier League like he has so fast is a testament to his talent. I think we have a player there. Lots to come from him.

My MoTM award goes to Aaron Ramsdale. The vicious internet stuff that went on before he signed looks even sillier than it did a few months ago. The keeper is vocal, he makes very fast decisions, and he’s dominant in the box. Watching him take responsibility for high balls and catch them was something else. He was a real difference-maker. Moping up for Ben White with the tackle that was nearly given as a penalty was a 3 point saver. I’m not even really fussed about his shot-stopping, it’s all the other bits he has that Bernd doesn’t. It’s early doors, but I really, really like what I see.

Auba wasn’t exactly at his peak from a striking perspective, but he created three chances, he did a lot of dirty work, and I thought he ran like a captain. It’s hard for him, the system we play need a Calvert-Lewin, but regardless, we need to get him more chances in the box. He has to be a 30 goal a season striker this season, so something needs to be amended so we can release him.

A special shout to Martin Odegaard who looks a Rolls Royce of a player. His freekick was the special sauce we’ve been lacking. Stunning stuff. Overall though, I just love what I see. He’s aggressive with his pressing, he’s great at controlling possession, I like that his passing is getting more ambitious, but I really love his leadership. He’s always trying to lift the team. Nothing is more motivating than getting binned off by a mega club, he’s going places with us. A top game from him.

Also, a shout for the subs. I thought they were good today. Tavares did a solid job, his run was so, so powerful. He has it all if he can apply himself. Lokonga and AMN came on a did a good job in midfield. I was particularly impressed with Ainsley. He looked super focused on the job. Bigger picture here, Arteta is learning from past mistakes, he’s brought the player in from the cold and he’s giving him a go after the debacle of the summer. Fans will love that. Player has to do a job, but it’s nice to see him getting minutes.

Arsenal have done the job that was needed. We’re not off track now. There’s a big game midweek in the league cup, we’ll want a win there. Then the big one, the cup final, a North London derby of great significance. Spurs have been ropey this season, Arsenal have also been off colour, this is the first mega test of faith. If Arteta delivers a result, it’ll go a very long way to restoring a bit of faith. Lose? It’s not even on the agenda.

Right, listen to the podcast or watch the video. It’s me and Matt. Johnny has his boys birthday party. IT IS STILL GOOD THO.

Say it again. The place for a Captain is Central Defender. My prediction,Ben White the next for us.

Northbanker

Reality is that whoever the manager is now is going to have to spend a few months blending this new and (yes it IS relevant) young team together

Delighted with a win at the New Mordor and will always be happy with that

For me the acid test is the team selection next week. Xhaka is presumably available ( think the League Cup clients as a game to be missed??) so does he get picked again? Will MA revert to type and once more pick Leno?

andy1886

RIP Jimmy Greaves.

Enjoyed his Saint and Greavsie, his playing career not so much.

Sid

Ben White will be a bencwarmer when Mertesacker takes over, our CBs will be Magalhaes and Saliba

andy1886

Northbanker – honestly think that Leno is toast. Xhaka however will continue to haunt us unfortunately.

Andy

Yes Wimbledon was bad, but the next night when Liverpool put 5 past west ham made it a sort of us against the world so to speak, coz no one outside of Highbury gave The Arse a chance to win 0-2 on the Friday night.

But as Brian Moore said, “Arsenal kept its powder dry” 🙂

Does anyone think that once The Arse swings into action after this re build that Haaland is within reach?

englandsbest

Fear stalks the whiners. It’s okay, guys. nobody is gonna say, ‘I told you so.” Not if you change your tune now. From your usual dirge to ‘He’s aJolly Good Fellow’. You’ll feel so much better. Like swallowing a double scotch on a murky Sunday afternoon.

GG9, Sadly no chance of Haaland, he’ll have his pick of clubs when that £64m clause kicks in next year. But a striker will be on the agenda next summer bar a miracle like Eddie coming good and signing a new deal.

Northbanker

EB – even if we go on a run and now and end up in the top 4, it isn’t going to alter the clear mistakes in selection and transfer strategy mistakes being made. Those mistakes combined with poor in-game mgmt in previous games have meant not winning the Europa Cup lasr season and not competing in Europe this season. I do however think the club bought well this Summer but had we not sold Martinez we would not have need to buy Ramsdale. Many of those players were not available in the first 3 games but MA’s tactics and… Read more »

RIP Jimmy Greaves the greatest Sputs player of all time imho

Sid – I hope that Saliba is still here to fight for his place. A 3-4-3 could see both being deployed. White would then be critical in being the most progressive to link defence with midfield.

Oh goodness. As someone who was trying to fuck with a certain poster, is it wrong of me to think it’s hilarious that his son asked him why I think he’s gay in real life? That can’t be real, can it? 😭🤣😂 If it’s all true though, I mean, forget my joke, “flip it” being his worst swear word is a more damning sign than anything else. Also I agree we need to be up there in top 6 at the very least . This season it should be the target

Raulishuss

It’s ok to have reservations about arteta as up til now he hasn’t proven anything yet but the constant negative about our new players when they hadn’t even kicked a ball shows some weird agenda. Even yesterday some were already beating how ode is crap and auour would be better and how ben white is going to get bullied blah blah. Notice val doesn’t comment when we win but he’ll be the first to rally the troopz if we even draw

“Reality is that whoever the manager is now is going to have to spend a few months blending this new and (yes it IS relevant) young team together”
____________________________________________________________________________

We haven’t change our personnel for the attack since last Christmas. I don’t trust this coaching team to improve our attack. The front three are too static when we have the ball. They also lack chemistry among them.

Raulishuss

I’m sure you expected villareal to be beaten by man u. How you can say for certain his tactics prevented us to win the europa league when it was in the semifinal is kinda strange.

Emiratesstroller

andy 1886

I am not losing my marbles.

The expression 1-0 to the Arsenal originated from the George Graham era. Arsenal’s outstanding defence was built during that period and continued through to Arsene Wenger’s
period at the club.

The point was that Arsenal won many of their games by a single goal and the club’s foundations were built on a tight and mean defence. That defence was built in similar fashion to the famous Liverpool sides recruiting players from lower divisions or unfashionable clubs. Messrs Winterburn, Dixon and Bould were all costing peanuts. Adams
was recruited through the club’s academy.

Raulishuss

Is it just me? But the signs are there, the chances are coming, we are just missing that decisive touch, control, final pass and clinical edge atleast thats what im seeing this past two matches

andy1886

Stroller – good to see that you still can’t admit when you make a mistake. To quote you:

” It should not be forgotten that fans used to celebrate “1-0 to the Arsenal” when George Graham was the Manager. We won two league titles in that fashion.”

No we did not. The one-nil era occurred after those two title wins and was a total change of tack from the seasons previous.

Northbanker

Raulihuss – no one can say for sure what would have happened with different elections etc but ridiculous formations selected by Arteta (eg false no 9) in both Villareal games cost us the semi final.

Luteo Guenreira

Watched a replay of that match, I liked the starting lineup. Hope that group gets more time together to gel. Gabriel and Tomi were solid. Thought White didn’t carry the ball forward much at all today, isn’t that what he was bought for? I liked Odegaard playing next to Partey, with Ode showing his intent to be so positive from midfield I thought Partey showed a lot more discipline without trying to force anything forward like he has in a lot of games. ESR continues to not be at his best when playing with Odegaard as starters. Not sure if… Read more »

I don’t have any constant negativity towards our new players before they’ve kicked a ball Tomi has played two games and done great. If he keeps it up he’ll be a great signing. Sambi the same. Tavares was cheap as hell and not done anything negative and shown promise. Ode isn’t really a new signing so he’s treated as an existing player. Ramsdale I’ve been very positive about his performances, has been very good and should remain a starter. White I’ve not written him off by any stretch of the imagination but I’ve said his performances so far haven’t been… Read more »

I did not make a mistake. George Graham was manager not just in the two seasons you referred to.

The point was that Arsenal conceded fewer than 1 goal per game during the George Graham era and many of the games we won were tight affairs. The term 1-0 to the Arsenal highlighted how many games were won in that period by close margins and not specifically that we won goals by that score.

Luteo Guenreira

Like many already pointed out, the lack of finishing quality from our forwards is going to be the main issue this season. A return to history and “1-nil to the Arsenal” might work against Burnley and Norwich, but we’re gonna have to score to compete against the better clubs.

What are we playing for this season? Top four? A return to Europe? A cup trophy? Or are we at the point where we want to see any type of progress and evidence of hope for the future?

Tee

“Saka has been rubbish in this game. I guess Arteta’s generational coaching is yielding results.”

You just have to laugh at some posts like this during the Burnley game.

Calling Ramsdale a relegated keeper only goes to show the kinda posters you have here.

Emiratesstroller

andy 1886

For reference Arsenal finished 10th in 1992-3 season scoring just 40 goals and conceding 38.
Ian Wright was top goalscorer with 15.

So even in a bad season under George Graham we conceded few goals.

andy1886

Stroller – you referred to our two title wins won that way.

They were not. Simple. Sad that seems to be beyond your understanding.

I’m trying to puzzle out how Arsenal can come 4th in PL with a manager who makes clear mistakes in transfers and selection. Unless you mean Arteta was a rookie who has learned in the job. In which case, bully for you.

Patience pays off.

Pierre

Just watched the game and I’m not sure why the players/team should be so criticised. Burnley never really created a clear cut goalscoring opportunity, was a scrappy affair but that is what you would expect playing Burnley. The new signings. Tomiyasu looks like a player at right back , he was against Burnleys most creative player and nullified him to the extent that Mcneil was moved to opposite flank…a very disciplined performance. Having Tomiyasu defending the near post at corners is a bonus as we have been weak in that area.. Ramsdale looks to have some of the characteristics as… Read more »

Andy 1886 Yes I referenced the two league titles in that period, but I pointed out the defensive record during George Graham’s time. Indeed many successful Liverpool Teams were built around their defensive solidity rather than being prolific scorers. When I discussed the two latest results where we won 1-0 with reference to George Graham era it highlights the importance of winning games rather than the style of the performance. Arsenal are currently in a situation of having to grind out results. I will be very happy if we win 1-0 against Spurs and the game is as dull as… Read more »

This was a good win through hard work. Thought Tomi grew into the match as it progressed and Ramsdale was solid and confident. Was very surprised at how uncomfortable White was with the ball, timid passing that on several instances almost proved calamitous. He really does need to improve his game or perhaps as many suggested, he’s going to be better suited out right. Still a lot more work to do and hopefully this eleven is the eleven that can finally settle in. Hard earned win that was not pretty by every standard, but take the points and move forward… Read more »

Ramsdale is the perfect example of what I mean when I say. Everything going on at Arsenal depends on YOUR perception of the club. No disrespect to Ramsdale. Nah, Andy was right. 1-0 was never winning us any league titles. BTW, Andy, is that true about Haaland’s £64m clause? I mean, are Dortmund’s chiefs mentally disabled? They could have sold him for 180 this year. Are they willing to lose 120m for one season of Haaland???? Bonkers if true. What, they were hoping to lose that amount so they can finish 2nd instead of 3rd? EB – I don’t think we will come 4th – my point was to look back and analyse whether a team under MA, making the selection and transfer mistakes he has made, could come 4th. If Im wrong and suddenly all those mistakes are yesterday’s news, then great

It is promising that he does seem to have bought well but even during that process, Xhaka’a contract was extended.

Kris

BTW,
Pedro, please don’t keep avoiding this question:

How many points is the absolute minimum for us this season?
Wenger’s by far worst season which was also unluckiest had us at 63. Next year Emery got 70.

So 65 points is a realistic target for a much better team than the one that got 70, right??

Pierre

Kris
Pepe not brilliant but far from having a poor game.

Arteta will do well to persevere with Pepe as he is not too far from having a massive impact on the team…

He did a good job in supporting Tomiyasu defensively and created a couple of half chances and if Saka’s touch had been better when it mattered we would have had a couple of one on one’s..

Eloquently worded, first by Reality Check, and subsequently, Almuniasaynomore..
Good win, but elsewhere, Southampton nullified an attack that tore us apart.

R.I.P. Jimmy Greaves.

Tom

“How many points is the absolute minimum for us this season?“

Kris, I thought this has been settled already by Edu’s non-committal answer to a similar question.
There are seemingly no standards or requirements for this season other than players staying fit and gelling.
My guess is even the repeat of last years league position would be framed as signs of progress, but Arteta keeps his job, with Pedro’s approval, even with a lower placement.

Jimmy Greaves – I was fortunate enough to play with him when he was 45. It was a corporate mid week game.
