6 NEW PLAYERS BUT WE’RE ALL SAD?

by .

What absolutely batshit crazy few weeks it has been.

In the end, ignoring the circus around Arsenal, the transfer window was pretty decent.

We signed 6 players.

  • Lokonga > Ceballos
  • Odegaard > Ozil
  • Ramsdale > Runarsson
  • White > Luiz
  • Tavares > Xhaka (LB)
  • Tomiyasu > Bellerin

It’s weird to sign that many players and not feel on top of the world. Most Arsenal fans are sad. Each signing is an improvement, all of them are young, and we’ve moved on some drossy deadwood. But I think the main issue we all have is… can you trust a system that has so consistently let us down?

The signings certainly aren’t for the next 3 months, they’re for the next three years. The hope is that each one of those players bangs, but we know that rarely happens. Whatever the football scenario is, one thing we do know is that the next coach is NOT inheriting a bag of shite. Yep, I’m sad, but I like the squad, I really do.

You have to look at the players holistically and sprinkle a lot of hope on potential outcomes.

What didn’t we have last season?

Auba dropping 25 goals. Everything needs to be geared around moving the needle there.

We’re still yet to have a decent run of Thomas Partey, easily our best midfielder. Historically, he’s fit, we need him to get back to what he is.

We haven’t had a settled defence, despite having the 3rd best in the league. Logic would say better technicians make the defence better.

We haven’t had an in-form keeper since Emi Martinez left us. Ramsdale after the break could be that guy.

Hope, hope, hope.

Lots of things have to go right in the next 1 month to save this Mikel Arteta shit show. To my mind, he’s dead even if he wins 10 games on the bounce. He has soured his relationship with the base badly this summer. As Matt said on the podcast, don’t treat an Arsenal supporting Hale-Ender like shit, or you’ll feel the full force of the fanbase.

What can’t be denied is that it’s pretty much nailed on we will be better after the break, in spite of Mikel Arteta. We’ll have better players in a system that we know can be decent, and the mood will shift. I’m sure Arsenal will have some behind closed doors games this week to get certain players back to match fitness. Our new right back needs to hit the ground running, Ben White needs to get his bearings with Gabriel, we need Thomas Party in unrusty shape. No way Arsenal roll the dice on a fast Norwich start.

As for the last day of the window? What a mess.

The Ainsley thing is utter madness. We tried to push him out, he blew shit up on social, now there have been clear the air talks with Arteta and he’s part of the plan and valued? Imagine being Ains. What a nightmare.

Willian hated the project so much he passed on £20m. Good for him. But shame on his agent is dragging Arteta in the media. Even worse that he’s dragging the transfer strategy. He’s either saying Arteta is a fraud and has too much power… which makes Edu redundant. Or, he’s suggesting his client has poor taste in players, which we know to be true, based on signing two of Kia’s boys. Either way, this reeks of your mum telling off the kid who bullies you at school. Not a good look for either party. Wouldn’t happen at a club with leadership.

Reiss took a loan to Feyenoord, which is good news for him. He needs a shot of confidence and some love from a coach that sees the potential. He also needs to ground himself. He has the talent, now he needs to shine otherwise it’s League 1 for him.

Eddie didn’t move to Palace, which is a disaster for him personally. I like the player, he’s very talented, but he’s not getting minutes this season… but where is the clarity? Who is 3rd choice striker, Folarin or Eddie? Both share the same agent. Utterly incoherent planning.

‘Flipping burgers and yachting while Colney burned’ would be a fair line of attack if Vinai had any courage.

Kola, now a centre back, asked his Turkish suitors for too much money, so he’ll not be getting a squad number this season.

Mo Elneney dodged the window like Messi dodges tackles. Super performance from a player that offers nothing to our midfield.

We still have all the centre backs.

We still have Soares.

Arsenal sold… 1 player. In an entire summer. Isn’t that staggering? We had a whole season to plan exits and only managed one. Unreal. What a black mark against Edu.

So, not really sure where to go now.

I am excited about the unknown qualities of the players we’ve brought in.

I am hopeful for Arteta’s personal picks. Absolutely praying the right-back, and the keeper, are actually good.

I hope the new strategy and the better-scouted players can deliver sooner rather than later.

I hope the older players pick things up.

I hope the younger players go into their new deals and shine.

I hope there are consequences for our farcical leadership.

While you’re here, we did a deadline day special. Watch or listen to it via a podcast application of your choice.

Again, thank you to all the new listeners, we had quite the summer!

See you in the comments.

People are sad because Arteta the novice is still around and we didn’t get to grips yet again with central midfield.

When Arteta states that Xhaka is a key player in the side there can only be sorrow.

If you don’t sort your central midfield out then the whole team suffers.

And that’s in addition to a manager who is obviously failing.

It’s just a case now of waiting on for his inevitable sacking or if not just watching this club fall further and further behind.

Jim Lahey

“It’s just a case now of waiting on for his inevitable sacking or if not just watching this club fall further and further behind.”

This exactly, why is the club delaying this? The longer they wait the more damage Arteta will do to the club.

Mr Serge

I hope we are ok but I fear we won’t be and Arteta will be gone after the NLD for sure. Whoever we bring in needs to be organised and know how to man manage what is essentially a young squad now bar a couple of elder statesman

Gary Ssss

I don’t know why everyone is so up in arms about the treatment of Maitland-Niles??? He is the guy who had the opportunity to make the right back berth his own at the start of last season, but insisted he was a central midfielder. So much so, he decided he’d rather go out on loan to West Brom rather than play right back at Arsenal, and this was after he had made the England squad as a wing back???? Everton offered a two year loan deal, after which his value would tank due to the length remaining on his contract,… Read more »

As they say, hope is not a strategy.

Shit window that could have only unfolded at one club, Arsenal.

Black Snake

We had hope we Pep Zero came in but he slowly and surely enough ground that away. When the team is clearly getting worse under his management and all sorts of shit records are being broken we’d be better investing our hope in him getting sacked.

Jim

Think the window looks shit because we spend the most money in Europe and only ended with the players that we have. Personally I think they’re all smart moves and improve the squad but not relative to the net outlay, or even for the personnel outlay. I think it comes down to this … “Arsenal sold… 1 player. In an entire summer. Isn’t that staggering? We had a whole season to plan exits and only managed one. Unreal. What a black mark against Edu.” That’s really pathetic in all honestly. There was defiantly money to be made from our squad,… Read more »

This has to be the starting XI every match if fit.

Subs – Leno, Tavares, Holding, AMN, Martinelli, Pepe, Laca.

Get AMN playing in midfield & filling in at RB when needed, He should get minutes most games & he’ll be a valuable player IMO plus he’s a Gooner!!

Xhaka, Mari, Elneny, Kola, Chambers & Cedric should never wear the shirt again. But they will & mike will be sacked.

We all know why “we don’t feel top of the world “.

It’s because we’re bottom of the league and a certain manager is in charge.

He stays…….then there’s no “hope”.

How much did we get for Artita ?

Leedsgunner

I thought we would be done with relying upon hope when Wenger left…

Remember when Wenger relied on hope to justify himself when he refused to sign anyone?

Arteta has signed people and his apologists are still relying on hope to buy him time.

The thing is if he was good enough we wouldn’t have to rely on hope. We could rely on careful planning, expertise, experience and skill.

They had all year to plan our outgoings. The fact that they only managed to sell 1 player for a decent sum is really pathetic.

Black Snake

We had a manager at my local football club who kept saying “keep the faith” – in one season he signed near enough 100 players, constantly trialling throughout the season. Needless to say, they were in a relegation battle in the last two months. Faith & hope are basically excuses for people that don’t have a fucking clue and think that at some point it will come good.

The depressing thing is that if Arteta was on the verge of getting sacked, he’d not have the power to push for yet another CB/RB hybrid. Ornstein said that Arteta personally pushed for Tomiyasu. How do you let a manager that is supposedly hanging in by a thread, to have input on the incoming transfers, and especially when he is pushing for a player that was a CB up until the last half a season when he also had games as a CB and LB to play RB for us. I’m not even saying anything bad about Tomiyasu. I’m questioning… Read more »

It’s all so confusing

Jim Lahey its not going to be easy to find another decent manager willing to take on a bottom of the table club so of course they will stick with Arteta for a bit while they check out other options. I dont see Arteta being there at Christmas.

Arsenal Truth Willian is not losing £20m by leaving Arsenal. Got a £10m signing-on fee (banked) + £100k p/wk salary, so he would have earned £10.4m over next two years. However, his £72k pw/k salary at Corinthians not too shabby and will earn him £7.4m over next two seasons, so he’ll lose £3m. Simon v. Orsouw I was lead to believe he was on closer to £240k p/w at Arsenal. Which would have your figure way off. So how are we attracting those players if the BB is still here?

6 new faces aged between 20 to 23 years signed for £150 million – I hope I am wrong but the way Arteta has been supported in transfer window it doesn’t look like he is going anywhere very soon.

alexanderhenry

raptora

I believe the club will stick with Arteta unless we get relegated.
Even a bottom half finish will suffice.

There is a three to five year plan at arsenal which we’re all supposed to believe in.
A gradual build focussing on youth and shrewd acquisitions that we can then sell on at a premium.
The emergence of a new dynamic, modern footballing style and philosophy, with arsenal returning to the elite in the next few seasons or sooner.

Habesha Gooner

To be honest we are being built like a Conte team right now. We have potentially 6 center backs, two of which can play RB. Chambers, Tomiyasu, Holding, Mari, Gabriel, White all are CBs. Two rightbacks in AMN and Cedric, Two Leftbacks in Tierney and Tavarez. I am not counting Kolasinac because his contract should have been ripped by now. I can’t believe Arteta played him at city. That sent him the message that he might play this season. If he was training alone like Torreira did, he would have canceled the contract. So we look like a 3 at… Read more »

This is pretty balanced on Willian. I don’t think he was on 250k if we paid him a 10m signing-on fee. In any way, he is saving us some money but he is not losing 20m, because he’ll get quite a decent salary at Corinthians.

Black Snake

TR7 – I get that vibe as well. Absent owner & clueless board gives rookie loads of money in the “hope” it will come good eventually. If it does it will be by fluke buuuuttt if Arteta may find players stop playing for him if he’s a nasty little shit.

Kroenke needs to review urgently his management and coaching structures if the club is going to progress. The reality is that since Wenger’s departure there has been a revolution with almost complete turnover of staff. When you adopt such a process it is inevitable that mistakes are made and teamwork can evaporate. “So we look like a 3 at the back team. I think Conte would take our team if he is promised significant investment in midfield and in attack after this summer. ”

Yes that’s a fair observation and as you remarked you need a good midfield with a back three and wing backs and ours is not fit for purpose.

Conte had a very good centre midfield when he won that title with Chelsea. No good central midfield for Chelsea that season would have meant no title for Conte.

raptora

Samesong,
if I was a quality player I wouldn’t touch Arsenal with a barge pole. Kia was spot on when he said that every player that has arrived here recently has been a disaster. Tierney exluded.

Now, change the manager with a Conte, ten Hag and the technical director with Overmars/Edwards and the vibe will change. A lot of players would join us the moment we have competent, proven specialists.

At the moment we are a laughing stock. No doubt about that.

raptora

Everyone knows we are a laughing stock and ruled by amateurs. The clubs, the players, the journos.

What didn’t we have last season?

1) A manager capable of coaching more than the second slowest progressing football in the whole league

2) A manager who motivates and leads

3) A blogger who doesn’t abuse people who look at the evidence and so far see that the manager is failing

Danny

So we spent 145 million quid, more than anybody else, but it’s not quantity but quality at the end of the day and sadly as we’re no longer a top team, we simply can’t attract the worlds best. I know I’m stating the bleeding obvious but let’s hope that these 6 new players will all do well but the problem is still regarding Arteta.
As I said the other day, if the players decide like they did with Emery (vs. Frankfurt) then Arteta wont last through September, lose to Norwich/Burnley or/and especially Spurs at home then it’s curtains.

Karsa

The Turkish transfer window hasn’t closed yet. There’s still time to move on Kalasinac.

Davey

Besides the Arteta shit show I had fairly high hopes for Pepe now we have 2 10’s with the signing of Ode it seems ESR will be the inverted left winger and in many Arsenal fans line ups Pepe is on the bench. IMO A Central midfielder was more of a priority and can’t help feeling we spent 50m on the wrong Brighton player as it should have been Bisouma.

T

6 new players this window. all of them look like something between good and promising. looked at the list of deadline day transfers in premier league. most of the deals were loans except for a few striker deals. They may kid themselves and be planning for a long term future with the used car salesman but its up to us fans to voice displeasure with him at the games. The media have started to question his decisions, tactics, lack of playing style and lack of results/progress as well.

Unless he can get a consistent (I mean in terms of personnel as the idiot keeps changing the side every week) side playing well, scoring goals and winning matches he won’t last long here.

hope” is the last refuge of fools and victims, and Pandora’s last curse

Arsenal have more deadwood piled up than an Alaskan preparing for winter.

There is no point in getting all these ball playing defenders when we have two ageing and misfiring strikers plus a midfield with Xhaka in it.

We don’t create enough and we don’t put the few chances we get away.

The fact we moved on so few players even with fewer games to be played shows how inept the set up is. I really feel for AMN, he’s been sold a pup like Willian. Disgraceful treatment of a young player who’s been with Arsenal since age 6.

Habesha Gooner

Oh Balogun and Martinelli would be subs to the target man. Conte usually switches between a 352 and 343 depending on the types of players that he has got.

Dark Hei

“Why would we go through such a shitfest when we could have given the money to Conte and he’d have us compete in his 2nd season?”

I think we need more modest managerial targets than the likes of Conte, Zidane, etc

Don’t think for a second that the Kronkes purchased 6 players due to altruism. They are taking a loan for these investment in hope of making a tidy profit.

These are signings that Kronke made to future proof their spending

JP

Would love to be proved wrong but cannot see in a million years Conte taking the Arsenal job in this situation. He just walked out of the Italian champions because they told him they would have to sell his best players and there wouldn’t be money to have a run at the CL.

It is perfectly clear what Arteta has learned: an old dog can’t (or won’t) learn new tricks. He came with a project in mind, and a method of play to achieve it. He believed – wrongly – that the players as a whole would take to his ideas. But many – notably the old – did not. Some tried but invariably reverted to the old way at critical moments. Arteta took over a team that made the EL Final and missed out on CL Football by a point and has been given over £200m to ensure this team gets back in the CL places. That means he needs to deliver now, not in 3-5 years. If it looks like that isn’t on, then show him the door.

Ishola70

Let’s get in defenders that can actually look after themselves physically and even bully the opposition rather than the other way around all the time.

Ditto with the midfield.

And a striker that is physically imposing as well can come in handy.

There are some areas of the pitch where we can still have the flair but the spine should be about physically imposing players.

JP

Habesha Gooner

By the sounds of it Kola and Eddie priced themselves out of moves not us.

Too early to tell, but if this is now a 3-5 year project (reframing and lowering expectations is what Arsenal fans do well) then he will stake a claim for this unwanted “feat”.

Black Snake

Even if Artwatta cant coach the squad into better shape, how about just booting them into the gym and getting them to bulk up so they don’t get pushed around on the pitch.

Charlie’s idea of getting in Tammy Abraham wasn’t a bad idea at all. He can play a bit for a big lump and he would give a much needed physical presence to this side. But that’s just one example. We need a GK that can bruise it with the opposition and at least one CB that enjoys the physical along with at least one midfielder with the same traits and CF. Then attach the flair players around that physical base. Arteta wants us to be a passing side. It’s not going to work when the transitions and overall play is… Read more »

I don’t think that Ramsdale is a replacement for Runarsson.

Surely Ramsdale is a replacement for Martinez/Ryan.

I would have thought that Runarsson after a couple of games was our third string and replaced
by Okonkwo.

People wasting their time thinking up lineups Conte would have if in charge LOL
Why not Klopp. I mean he could leave Liverpool and join us, right? 😀

Conte will not be coming to us unless we have at least a 10% chance of winning something big, like EPL or at least Europa l.

JP: “We may have spent £150m but that 1.5/2 players in Conte’s world, plus massive wages.” Conte made Inter champions for the first time in more than a decade with a total NET spent of £135m across 2 years. Inter had a record of 72 pts maximum from 2011 to 2019 when he joined them. In his first year they managed 82 pts, in his second year they managed 91 pts. When Conte left, this Inter squad was either sold out for a huge amount of money – Lukaku bought for £66m, sold for £103m, Hakimi bought for £39m, sold… Read more »

alex,
I know you weren’t agreeing with it. Only an idiot would.

I think that the club did much better than their rivals in this window and we probably closed the gap to top4 a little bit.

Some of them even think Conte is too temperamental for Arsenal. I read some even recommending Eddie Howe and Thomas Frank lol.

It’s not just the management that’s screwed up at Arsenal.

Spudnik

If the words dictatorial and bullying are being bandied about on the Le Grove podcasts to describe Arteta, you have to ask what is being said by the players at the training ground. Minor squad players who wanted out, can’t get out. A fringe player has had to have ‘clear the air talks’????? It looks like Arteta will be given time, but is he really going to turn the atmosphere around at Colney? As for the transfer window.??? Arsenal have had to pay through the nose for players because the sharks in the market know we are desperate to improve… Read more »

What you are outlining is “long term” planning.

That will not appeal to most of today’s supporters. They want immediate success. There is only one way to achieve that and it is to follow the Man City/Chelsea models.

Arsenal have changed in last 3-4 years their entire management and are in process of rebuild mode. Most of the appointments made both on or off the field are inexperienced and
untested in roles provided.

It is clear that a lot of mistakes are/will be made along the line.

Habesha Gooner

Raptora A lot of people have the idea that Conte spent on his way to getting Inter their title but that is not the case at all. He spent enough and then he improved what he had like a proper coach. The fact that people think he won’t come is down to our ownership and management than him. 200 mil has been given to a rookie coach who hasn’t improved one bit. But some people think it was right. I think he would come if you promised him a way to win. If you got him the players he wants… Read more »

Habesha: “But our rookie coach might not even move forward from the 8th position he got us last season after spending 200 mil+. It is ridiculous.”

I don’t think we will improve on 8th. It is ridiculous.
