SALIBA BREAKS 16 SECOND SILENCE + TRANSFER CHATTER ROUND-UP

by .

William Saliba has broken his silence after about 16 seconds. The French centre back has this to say on his loan move to Marseille.

“I don’t think I left for England too early. I don’t care about all that,”

“I chose OM because it is the right choice. I pushed to come here. We will see what will happen next season”

Remember when I told you players choose their loan deals? There you go. I think it’s like an employment law thing or something. Whatever, William made the decision he’d head back to France for the third time and I have to say, I think the decision is a bit meek.

If he was serious about a career in the Premier League, he’d have taken a move to Southampton or Newcastle, learned the language, acclimated to the cuisine, and developed his game. Instead, he opted to go back to a low-intensity league and deliver more of the same. Very, very odd.

The more worrying thing? Marseille, a club in dire straits financially (unless dealing with Arsenal), have made some centre back signings that might make you sweat if you are William.

  • Luan Peres (26),
  • Leonardo Balerdi (22)
  • Micky van de Van (20) (strongly rumoured)

They already have Duje Caleta-Car and Alvaro Gonzalez on the books, though one might leave. Saliba has jumped out of a club with severe centre back congestion, into one that will have purchased three. There were already rumours that Sampaoli told Saliba he has things to work on and that he was concerned about his experience. I really, really hope he doesn’t end up sitting on the bench for 3 months, because you can be sure he’d have landed more minutes at Newcastle, who seem very happy to play younger players.

In other news, more of a general Arsenal gripe about some of the average opinion that goes around on the internet. Namely, anything Arsenal do is a joke, anything any other club does is a spectacular show of ambition.

We’ve had it with Ben White, who was a rip off because:

  • We had our pants pulled down by Brighton
  • There were bargains to be had in Europe
  • People didn’t know about him

Then Spurs go out and sign Romero for £5m more, a player from a slower league, with a similar rise to prominence… and no one bats and eyelid.

Yesterday, the mask really slipped. People just want to complain for exposure even if there’s no statistical grounding in what they are saying. Aston Villa signed Danny Ings, out of the blue, for £30m.

‘Such ambition’

‘Proper striker’

‘This is how you do a summer’

Errrrr, what?

Let’s look at the ‘THINGS ARSENAL SHOULDN’T DO’ checkbox.

  • 29 years old ✅
  • Dirty injury record ✅
  • Inconsistent performer ✅
  • No better than what we have ✅
  • Massive fee ✅
  • Last year of their deal ✅
  • Retirement vibes ✅

I honestly cannot fathom anyone thinking that this is a good deal, nor those same people saying the same things if Arsenal did that piece of business to replace Saka.

Here’s how he stacks against Lacazette.

Ings goals last 4 seasons:

  • 13
  • 25
  • 8
  • 2

Total: 48

Lacazette goals last 4 seasons:

  • 17
  • 12
  • 19
  • 17

Total: 65

Here’s how the assists work out over the same time period.

  • Ings: 10
  • Laca: 28

There’s a community of people with names like @SalsicciaGustosa14 that drop consistently horrendous football takes, and people lap them up because they are so, so dramatic. If you are reading those accounts and you are sad that we didn’t replace Lacazette with Ings, I need you to hand your digital equipment to a friend and we’ll GoFundYou to a football detox retreat.

‘Hi, my name is @CapelliLisci08, I’m here for my bad football opinions. Last week, I said Ings was… elite.’

As the afternoon wore on, the pivot shifted to… they get their business done early. Excuse me? The football season starts next Friday. Villa spent half the summer convincing their fans they were bringing ESR to their mottled rug to play with Grealish and Buendia. Now they’re having to pivot after selling a player more spectacular than a burger at 4 Charles Prime Rib (if you know you know). They haven’t had a textbook summer of greatness.

Anyway… back to football.

The challenge on Wesley Fofana was an absolute disgrace. I cannot believe some of the things that have gone on during preseason. To break a fellow professionals bone in any scenario is horrendous, to do it in what looked like a petulant retaliation in preseason? It’s unforgivable. Thankfully, it looks like just a break so it should be a clean recovery, regardless, this sort of action needs a punishment to match the crime.

The Arsenal transfer front doesn’t appear to have moved very far. Leicester have said no to the players we have on offer, though one would imagine our collection of centre backs might be more interesting to them now. I really hope there’s genuine intent for them to sell and that we have a deadline on this, because it’ll be messy if we don’t sign anyone.

There are a few ‘voices’ on the internet that no one has ever heard of talking about the Ramsdale deal, indicating the scouting has come from the keeping coach. Please… people have to stop believing every handle with more than 6 followers. If we’re interested in Ramsdale, it’ll be because the scouts have seen something they value for the system. Maybe it’s the passing, maybe it’s something interesting Wilder (who is an innovative coach) was doing… whatever it is, the recco won’t have come from the keeping coach. If you want further confirmation that Arsenal are doing things properly, take a read of what the agent of Ben White said.

‘The way he plays is very conducive with the way that Arsenal like to play, and it was very fascinating the attention to detail that Arsenal put into scouting the players that they are going to sign, whether that would be artificial attention, data analysis or video analysis… it’s all very impressive.’

There’s a vision for how the football should be played, a set profile of talent that makes that system work, and a list of players who fit. We’ve moved beyond ‘the keeping coach knows a guy’… thankfully. Sure, we’ll make mistakes, but at least it won’t be ‘bad advice from <super-agent>’

Right, that’s your lot. Jump into the latest podcast and enjoy it so much, you leave a 5* review and some money.

Why are you comparing Villa to Arsenal?

Ings is an excellent signing for them IMO. PL proven, will def give them something extra.
Buendia, Bailey, Ings.

That is excellent business for them.

The fact that Ings wouldn’t be the right signing for US is irrelevant to that.

Saliba will start in nearly all games for OM.

Pedro implying that Saliba has made a wrong choice cause it will be so competitive there, doesn’t matter. Saliba will be their best CB, just like he was the best CB for Saint-Étienne and Nice.

Arteta is a dud for not giving Saliba a chance.

Demetrios

There are some “fans” that just want us to fail so they could say they were right, simple as that.

Window isn’t closed yet so I’d rather reserve judgement on our summer until our business is completed.

If it ends this way then fans will be right to be dissappointed, but I’m sure things are going to move considerably in the last week of the window.

Anyone here with first hand view of watching Aouar over the past few seasons at all? Strange we seemed so hot on him last year and barely a bleep this year even though seems could do a decent job at half the Maddison price? Yes there is always the risk of international bedding in time (and boy do they seem to take a while at arsenal) but the benefit surely would be extra funds available to upgrade significant portions of our squad no? Never miss an opportunity to disrespect Saliba eh?

Tom

DM Agree, Pedro apparently knows absolutely nothing of Ings but the few stats he looked up to push back on someone else’s tweet. Well, I’m not on Twitter but I do watch the Prem and concluding Ings signing has a retirement vibe about it is just wrong. You can have a serious reservations about his injury record but not his approach to football. This from Klopp: “Honestly, if you could bottle character and spirit, his would sell worldwide- he is so incredibly positive and full of energy”. I’m definitely not saying he’s what Arsenal need , not with his injury… Read more »

I’m not botheres about Ings tbh but everyone picks stats convenient to their argument. Ings goals per minute ratio is better than Laca’s, overall goals is moot when one has had European competition to play in (against some pretty dreadful teams) while the other doesn’t etc., etc.

I’m more interested in if we’re going to fix our dodgy midfield than what teams like Villa are up to.

Tom

Andy, at least Pedro dropped the “Saliba should’ve gone to Newcastle to prove Arteta wrong thusly regaining his Arsenal place “ line…… well , at least until the Willock situation clears up anyways.

Gunnergetyou

Come on Pedro, it’s obvious that Saliba will never be given a chance under Arteta. There are personal problems between them so it really doesn’t matter where he decided to go on loan. His value will plummet as his contract continues to run down but I think Arteta is more concerned about his ego than anything else.

Tom

No one should be bothered by Ings Villa transfer, Andy.
They have spent the Grealish money on three attacking players, one of whom has a bad injury record. If Ings can give them the same minutes he gave Southampton and the g/a per minutes ratio, they’ll be absolutely happy with that.

salparadisenyc

“This from Klopp: “Honestly, if you could bottle character and spirit, his would sell worldwide- he is so incredibly positive and full of energy”. ”

Interesting was that before Klopp loaned him out to Southampton then sold?

When it comes to the internet and social media, everyone has an opinion, but very few people have one that counts. The bottom line is that more than 90% of people talk a complete load of crap when it comes to football. Personally, although the market has been so slow so far, I am relatively happy with the business that Arsenal have done. But our squad is obviously too large, so we need to move several players on, preferably for a mix of permanent transfer fees and one or two loans. The bear minimum we need to bring in, is… Read more »

Danny Ings is a good footballer, no doubt about that but he is completely different player to Lacazette who I also rate. I would also guess that Ings goals have given his team more points than Laca`s for us, mostly because Arsenal cant win games by scoring just 1 goal and we almost always concede in each game. Anyway, strikers are not our keenest problem…..far from it

KAY Boss

Pedro, 85% on what you’ve posted. How people think Ings is better than Laca is beyond comprehension.

Pedro, back here in Accra, most Arsenal fans are less confident in Arteta.

Tom

“It’s a bit weird to have a vendetta against your own club on an Arsenal blog, is it not?“ What vendetta are you talking about, Pedro? On Ings, I said he’s not what we need but I can definitely see why Villa would sign him. When healthy he’s a handful for defenders and a great character to have around. You compared him to Laca not me. Show me an industry in which someone can be looked down upon when they can deliver 73% of another’s output at 40% cost, which is what Ings has done in comparison to Laca. On… Read more »

Pedro your use of stats to compare Laca to Ings is unfair.
They don’t play for the same team or create the same quality of chances … Put Laca in Southampton’s team and Ings @ Arsenal and then we can talk.

DivineSherlock

Pedro

No ones saying Aston Villa has done a masterclass here . But you have to atleast see what they are doing , They lacked a target man( A plan B if you will ) Watkins can move to the left . They have Bailey , Buendia and Bertrand Traore to play on wings as well. They lacked options upfront , they’ve addresed it. Its a gamble just like Lingard was for West Ham . Sometimes you really get offended over everything.

Godfather

Not saying Ings is better than Laca but it’s unfair to compare them based on simply goal stats.

Alex

Absolutely, whole heartedly agree with your take on average(terrible) opinion twitter accounts, I’m not even sure they’re Arsenal fans tbh. While this is slightly off topic, one thing our fanbase needs to really get a grip on is devaluing Arsenal players so publicly, so consistently and with such ferocity at every chance they get. It does nothing for the players confidence (and future performance), and does far less for the players value. While selling this summer has been hard for every club, we don’t do ourselves any favors by bashing everyone in the squad bar 4 players, branding them “deadwood”… Read more »

Godfather

Laca is simply bang average at everything

Average in dribbling ,
Shooting
Heading
Pace

His greatest strength is penalty conversion and he is above average at hold up play. No surprise he is nowhere near the French National team and Giroud who so many panned at Arsenal is chosen ahead of him.

DivineSherlock

Meanwhile we are week away from the start of the league and are waiting for a CAM , not yet upgraded our slow aging midfield which came 8th in the league . Already have our best CM injured for a month and have no idea who is our best striker yet.

Tom

Sal, Ings had a horror show injury record at Liverpool and to resurrect his career he asked Klopp to let him go to Southampton where apparently his family is from.
Klopp obliged.

salparadisenyc

Pretty basic regarding Lacazette and Ings, neither are good enough for this club currently.
Hence links to Lautaro Martinez which looks an absolute no-goer with Lukaku madness.

bacaryisgod

Overall good post Pedro but can’t agree with your take on Saliba. If he’ll struggle to make the Marseille first-team then I’m sure he wouldn’t be starting for Soton or Newcastle. As you rightly said, Ligue Un is a much softer league overall. Also, Marseille can offer the Europa League, something neither Soton or Newcastle (or Arsenal for that matter) can offer.

Zacharse

locatelli deal falling thru w juve. Liverpool might mKe a move. Really Like this guy. Hope we wind up w an extra 30m and about 100k a week for the fella

jdawg

I have to call you out again!

Romero for spurs isn’t a bad signing and cost them £47M. I am not saying White is bad, both are equally good. However the scum has just signed a Copa America winner who has played Champions League football. Last time I checked B White hasn’t played at the very top yet!

Both signings are a risk and I suspect White will fair better this season as he has prem experience. We will then see the following season who was the better signing.

Chris

Why has the Locatelli move to Juve fallen through? Are they really THAT broke? Bad times.

Doubtful we move for a player of his profile now that Xhaka is staying.

It’s that creative midfielder we desperately need and it does seem the club are working to secure one. The transfer window seems to have come alive the last couple of days so let’s hope to see something materialise real soon.

bacaryisgod

Also, not really fair to accuse legitimate Arsenal fans of a vendetta against their club because they don’t like the current management. No-one accused you of a vendetta against the club when you went guns blazing (correctly) after Emery.

On the substance, I agree with you on Ings, especially if it’s a 3 year deal as reported. I guess they have 100m burning a hole in their pocket. I would also assume that he’ll be primarily a second option to Watkins upfront. Not sure how well they would play together.

bacaryisgod

Fair point Pedro, but Newcastle also want to stay in the Premier League. If Saliba was proving to be a liability, I’m sure they would get him out of the starting line-up in a hurry.

I guess we’ll find out soon enough whether Saliba will be a regular starter for Marseille. Either way, with Europa League too, Marseille probably need an extra CB than Newcastle and we also don’t know who might be leaving Marseille yet.

andy1886

“Tom and Andy out here defending the indefensible… of another club”

Odd, I literally said that I don’t care what Villa are doing, not sure how you twist that into ‘defending the indefensible’.

I’ll file that under ‘deflection’.

Zacharse

Jdawg
What about mari? He played a bit of south american football and won a few trophies there. Why is romero instantly better?

bacaryisgod

jdawg

Yeah, I’m confused on that too. Yesterday Pedro said White was a 55m signing and pretty sure Romero is below that. I have no idea who cost more but they both need to perform!

Zacharse

If we could in theory move on elneny and a few youngsters we’re not far from the locatelli fee. The question is whether he wants to come
To england I guess and if so, whether lpool will mKe a play.
The juve contract broke down over the obvious, fee and wages

andy1886

Bacary, Villa played with Barkley behind Watkins last season, I assume that Ings/Watkins will play off each other in a simlar fashion (like an old style #10 striker playing off a #9).

I have no opinion on if it’s a good buy for Villa, still concentrating on what we do to improve our midfield which is all that matters.

jdawg

Also amazing how Arsenal are so focused on Villa’s progress. I guess that’s our level now. Should we not be worrying about Chelsea, pools & united’s progress as it’s top 4 we should be chasing not 8th!!

jdawg

Pedro, of course I agree. I said this season 21/22 White will be better but the following season I think that’s when we will see who is the better signing. Just because Romero signed for spurs doesn’t make him less of a player (well maybe).

I will be looking forward to see how Ben White fairs live at every home game this season : )

DivineSherlock

Romero played under Gasperini , Atalanta is literally the Serie A version of Leeds . Not sure you whether you dont know about this or are choosing to ignore this Pedro . Dont even begin to compare Romero to White please .

andy1886

Pedro, nope I commented on the selective use of stats which is something everyone does – pick figures to support their argument. Regardless of who we or anyone else signs ultimately the thing tat decides if a buy is good or bad is the ROI. In this case the ‘Return’ is measured in point at the end of the season. Question is will our ‘return’ be maximised by making the purchases that we do or would that return be greater if we invested in different players for different positions. My view is that replacing Xhaka would provide a greater ROI… Read more »

Joke Thursday (thinking about Aouar’s non- stickability for the entire quatre-vingt dix minutes).

Aouar signs for Arsenal and is picked to play against Brentford.Tets takes him to one side before the game and says, ‘given you’re new and going to find English football a bit full on, I’m going to pull you off at half time’.‘

Sacre bleu’, replies Aouar, ‘at Lyon, Monsieur Aulas only gave us a slice of orange’.

‘That leaves maybe ESR who if he scored more than 5 would be doing well. There’s no suggestion that Odegaard if we signed him would be prolific. If we’d have signed Buendia I’d have been more confident about letting Willock go, but as it is I think we could do with his goals.’

Andy,

But that’s why we are getting Maddison!

Or are we not getting Maddison again?

Maybe its just me but its beyond obvious that proper due diligence was not done with respects to Saliba. The fact that he’s not favoured by Arteta or seemingly anyone at the club, makes this a stupendously bad signing.
