Arsenal made Ben White their third signing of the summer in a deal worth £50m. It’s a monster transfer fee and a massive bet from Edu and Arteta. The player will pick up the #4, a legendary number at the club, and hope to take us back to past glories.
So what is all the fuss about with Ben?
Whether you like it or not, for an Arteta system to thrive, we need a ball playing centre back. It’s not a secondary consideration. David Luiz was the player that best reflected the profile of defender we need, the coaching staff believed him to be our best defender, and it’s hard to disagree when you look out how our attacking play was dented with him out of the team.
Remember the mission for the summer? Reduce errors in the system by half, become 20% more clinical down the other end of the pitch.
The gamble on Ben White is that he has the core skills David Luiz has. He’s supremely confident on the ball, so passing out of the back will be more comfortable. He also has the ability to drive passes through the lines, a part of our game that really struggles when Rob Holding steps in. His most impressive attribute is how he literally carries the ball up the pitch like a midfielder.
The biggest difference between him and David Luiz? About 11 years. Those 11 years are the difference between slow and fast which is reflected in red cards and sloppy penalties. If you want to reduce errors in the system, signing a ball playing centre back that can run is a good start. 11 years is also the difference between, ‘I’ve been there, done it and I can’t be arsed’… and ‘I have it all to prove, and I will go to war for this club.’ David Luiz was a bit above Arsenal. He’d won it all, played for the greatest managers, and just didn’t fancy it in certain games. Remember the West Ham game last season? He didn’t show up. Remember the City game when he was benched? Luiz is an immense person to have on your team in big games, but if things aren’t perfect for him, he can be a disaster. You always knew which player had showed up after 12 minutes. We deserve a player that will always show up.
Ben White needs to solve for the above.
I like the idea on paper. It’s a pricey one, but if you want Arsenal to get back to the top, these are the sort of deals you need to do. United signed Harry McGuire and everyone laughed at them, it’s not so funny now, is it? Big clubs invest in big positions. The major question is whether this guy can make the jump, but I like his character. Binned by Southampton, sent out on loan to Peterborough, Newport, then Leeds where he played nearly every game on their way to the title. Then a big season at Brighton where he landed a call-up. He’s starred for two highly technical managers with very different systems. That shows his intelligence and ability to adapt. It hasn’t been a straight shot to the top, nor has it been guaranteed… but for me, if you’ve slummed it, when something big comes along, you grab it.
Mike Arteta is very excited about the move.

He has benefitted well from two very good coaching set-ups and has shown with both Brighton and on loan with Leeds what a strong talent he is.
“Ben is an intelligent defender who is very comfortable with the ball at his feet and his style fits perfectly with us. And of course, he is still young, so his age and profile fits with what we are building here. We are all looking forward to Ben being central to our future long-term plans.
This transfer has to work for the manager. It’s a huge move and it makes the team he has now very much his own. Now it’s time to deliver. We need to see speed through the team, we want to see more variety in our play, and we want all that with the same level of defensive security we’ve had for the last 18 months.
There’s some other news doing the rounds regarding Xhaka. Amy Lawrence suggesting Roma are messing around and we’re going to offer him a new deal to protect value.

Protect the value of a player no one wants to buy for another 5 years? If he doesn’t leave, it’ll be a really dark moment in our summer. He’s a good player, but his limitations can’t continue to be propped up by special strategies. We need to move him on and bring in someone like Bruno Guimarães. I also struggle to see Xhaka wanting to stay, surely he’s done with Arsenal? Hopefully, this is just the standard negotiations tactic from Arsenal.
Finally, St. Louis is suing Stan K for £700m. Daniel Ek thinks that might result in Kroenke selling. I have my doubts.

Simple equation really, AFC need 15 more goals this season or it will be more of 8th or worse, no matter what.

I do hope we are getting Ben White to solve our playing out of the back issues… so many hospital passes from Leno to whomever and our CB’s panicking and vice versa. At times I was literally praying for Leno to just hoof it up to the center circle..to stop the pain.
If Ben White can help crack that code.. I am excited about that.

Charlie I recall some time back you citing stats along the lines of win % with and without xhaka in the team as evidence of his importance There are several stats here which correlate with what many of us feel we saw with our own eyes which was that he wasn’t making any noticably positive influence on our games compared with the 3 other CBs rotating there. Gabriel and mari can both pass pretty well and Gabriel is a progressive dribbler or whatever we’re calling these guys. Not everything has to be nuanced or non-binary. If the question is did we overpay for White ? The answer has to be a binary (Yes or No). Nothing wrong in saying yes we overpaid for White.
If the question is could we have better used the money for a midfielder ? The answer has to be either yes or no. Nothing egregious in suggesting we should rather have signed a midfielder.

How is it the same Charlie? Take Van Persie out of that 2012 Arsenal side and we are midtable, take Luiz out of this Arsenal side and we would have been no worse off, even slightly higher up the table even if you extrapolate the data.
You can talk about ball progression till the cows come home but ultimately it did not translate into us being any more successful on the pitch or better offensively.

I have the gut feeling that White is a very good footballer. Only problem I have with him is that his physical presence will undoubtedly cause us problems. He is lacking around 5 cm and his physique doesn’t fill me with confidence that he’ll be able to win many aerial duels or that he’ll have enough in his locker to hold physically the stronger attackers. At Arsenal we aught to be focused on whether a particular defender is good at defending not passing first and foremost let the likes of city and whoever the fuck focus on that sort cause they’re already possession based teams anyway whereas we’re a bit of a mess with no real philosophy to speak of. Don’t think that anyone sceptical of the deal believe that it will although it’s not likely to help him as we’re soft aerially at the back as it is.
When you have to reach for Sergio Ramos as a case in point to defend the height issue, you’re reaching. Especially as the PL is a different kettle of fish to La Liga for balls pumped into the box.

Despite Luiz’s stupendous passing skills our play was drab, slow and bereft of quality. Great midfielders create great play, not ball playing defenders. KDB is City’s MVP not Stones.
WE, I’m telling you what I hear from Arsenal. You don’t have the access to the mad stuff they run numbers against at Arsenal. The team functions better with Luiz in it. He opens up the field better than any defender we have and the difference is super clear when you watch the games he played in and the one’s he didn’t.
Doesn’t mean I wanted to keep him, I stated above the issues he caused last season… but you can’t deny his skillset makes us move forward quicker with more authority.

I understand skepticism with the White signing given the profile and fee, especially given other CBs moving this window. But comparing Luiz and Holding is madness. I think most of you all will agree with me on the fact that Ben White takes the good part out of David Luiz’s abilities ( passing and good technically on the ball) and cuts out the bad parts ( mistakes and unforced errors). Plus he is young and lots of potential to improve .

It’s Fofana’s fault that in 19/20 Leicester had Chilwell and healthier Evans, Soyuncu and Rodriguez. In 20/21 all of them missed gigantic parts of the season and Chilwell was sold. Fofana to blame that he partnered with CMs moved to play as CBs though.
Being dominant in the air isn’t as important as it used to be. Headers per game are decreasing year on year. I’d prefer my CB to be better on the ground as that’s where the majority of the game is played.
I also seriously doubt the stats are as sophisticated as you think. They will be as prone to questioning as every other stat that exists in football. The game is not a mathematical equation, it is an art not a science.

Simply judging a player on aerial duels is not good, I think the way Arsenal play most regularly against teams who concede possession to us and low block us , in the hope that we dont create much and hit us on the counter . Aerial duels become more important against teams like Burnley and Southampton , where we can play Holding instead of White .

Personally, from what i have seen i would say Saliba is more of a ball playing centre back than White as he has a touch of Rio Ferduband about the way he drops a shoulder bringing the ball out of defence. Aerial duels are always important. West Ham, Everton, Villa, Wolves, Spuds I can keep going. All of them rely on their tall forwards. Having someone that handicaps us in that regard isn’t very good.

Sorry but how do you run data on intangibles ? I am no data scientist but I did study two courses on data science during my MBA. Never thought it was possible to run data on intangibles. Intangible investments sure but intangible aspects of management ? Val and PhD any input on this ?
