ROUGH DIAMONDS

by .

WELCOME TO MONDAY.

Quick breeze through today as there’s not much news to take on.

Alex Lacazette is being linked with a move to Atletico Madrid for the 387th time in his career. If you remember correctly, he was heading there before they landed a ban way back when… or something like that. The fee is rumoured to be about £12m, which I find exceptionally high considering he earns £180k a week, but look, I’d take anything at this moment in time.

I think we’d be losing a leader in the squad. Even when he’s playing badly, he stands up, and he never hides. I also think he has some very specific skills we might miss, like his ability to drop deep and roll as a playmaker. Still, if this summer is about reengineering for the future, swapping him out for Tammy Abraham would make a lot of sense. You can’t plan for a future if a player is out the door next season… you also have the post-February drag where there players hunting out a new move start preserving their bodies.

Arsenal has signed Mika Biereth from Fulham (via The Athletic). The 18-year-old banged in 21 goals in 21 games for the U18s last season, he also dropped 13 assists. The player will be picking up the gap left by Nikolaj Moller, who is moving on loan to FC Viktoria Koln for a season.

What do I like about this move? Mostly that a hot young prospect playing in England is entrusting their future to Arsenal. I’ve been writing for years about moving to a Dortmund++ model. The concept is really simple.

  • Hire in developmental coaches
  • Attract young talent with the offer of fast-tracking to the first team
  • Sell one of these young players for HUGE money
  • Put that money into even better kids
  • Rinse, repeat until eventually, this approach brings success

Obviously, things are a little more complicated than that, but we’re already seeing the impact this model is having on the club. Our best youth players are no longer leaving by not signing new deals (Kido/Okonowo/Balogun). Our best first team young players are committing their long-term futures to the project (ESR/Saka/Martinelli). We are attracting top young talent from the continent and they are saying things like ‘I want to play with The Smith’ or ‘I was attracted to the club because I was told the club was building around young guys.’

As I said yesterday, there’s always a lag between perception and reality. A number of Arsenal fans are still stuck in mid-November thinking… well, does it really matter if the players are showing what the project is all about by committing to the club? It doesn’t.

Obviously, there’s still work to do this summer and we need to have a much better start than we did last season.

Transfers need to flow…

I’m guessing there’s no movement on a centre midfielder because Granit Xhaka’s move to Roma looks to be in doubt.

It seems like there’s no movement on a CAM because Martin Odegaard does not sound happy in Madrid and there are Spanish journos leaking that he might leave on loan again.

There’s no movement on the keeper because it sounds like Arsenal are not going to pay £35m for Aaron Ramsdale. If the stories of £18m are true, is the move that bad? The player has been called up to England, he’s won back to back player of the year awards for relegated clubs, he has 75 apps in the Premier League at 23 years old, and Asmir Begovic likes him… remember when we liked Begovic?

“He’s already proved that he can play at the highest level. He’s got a lot of potential still to fulfil.

“The more he plays, the more he’s going to progress. So I’m not surprised to see him linked with some of the top clubs.

“What he’s done over the last couple of years shows everyone the quality he has.

“With his age, where he’s at, the potential is there to become an even better goalkeeper.”

Whatever is going on with Ramsdale, it seems like professionals like him, fans of the clubs he plays for love him, and we just don’t get it.

I think it might be because a lot of us had really hurt feelings over Richard Wright when we signed him from Ipswich and he was terrible.

Anyway, I refuse to get upset over a backup keeper…

What I do find interesting is that there was a massive amount of complaining when we were signing senior players… now we’re looking at players with potential to grow, we’re complaining about that as well?

Tammy Abraham is 23 years old, he scored 48 goals in the Championship, he’s scored 26 in the Premier League, his Champions League record is 13 games, 4 goals, and 3 assists… and people are spitting feathers over that. That is a high potential player, why wouldn’t we be interested in his profile? Adebayor joined Arsenal at 22, do you know how many goals he’d scored in Ligue 1? 22 in 80 games. He was absolutely appalling when he landed with us, but he was young, had all the right attributes, then he banged and became one of the most devastating strikers in the Premier League. If he’d had better people around him, he’d have made it to Drogba levels.

Anyway, point is… young players don’t have ceilings. The point of having elite coaching is that you can take rough diamonds and make them shine. This is the direction Arteta should have been pushed down from day one, the club never should have allowed him the authority to say yes to older players.

Ok, that went on for longer than I expected. Let’s see you in the comments. x

Always liked Lacazette but there has to be a formula the club is settling on. It’s unlikely he would agree to a one-year extension at a lower fee as this might be his last chance for a good contract (not everyone gets as lucky as Willian)

This means sell or let him leave at the end of this season. If we can get near 10m and the weekly 180k off our books then the deal makes sense. It allows us to give more minutes to Balo and Martinelli too.

For the sake of all parties, I sincerely pray Xhaka finds a new club.

Tammy is a good buy even if it’s 40m. Anyone saying he is a Chelsea reject, do not get the difference between Luiz/Willian and a 23 year old who scores but a new coach don’t fancy him!

Mourinho didn’t fancy Luke Shaw (even Pogba) to some extent, doesn’t make them a bad player.

Tammy is the perfect profile we should target. Proven and perfect of age.

Adebayor cost us 3m in 2006 Pedro which even then was a snip.

Abraham is being touted for anything up to 40m. It’s not a like for like at all.

Not to mention we already had prime Henry and an on the cusp Van Persie up front when we went for Ade.

Walking Wounded

I always get so much more excited, as fan, when we buy those who have yet to prove themselves over the proven. I was so much more excited by Pepe then I would have been by Saha. We are not Utd who buy other teams best players and hope they perform similarly. We are a place where players come to prove themselves. Maddison? I’m not sure. I like him, but who else is out there for a third of the price who has a name to make for themselves?

Dissenter

We had some good developmental keepers in the club at the tail end of Almunia time.
Many of the keepers we despised as gooners have since gone on to have very decent careers
We had Szcezny, Fabianski and Vitoi Manonne
Of the three., Mannone petered out but we did sell him for decent money to Sunderland. Szcezny and Fabianskli have turned out to be quite good goalies.

If we buy better midfielders, then our striker won’t have to drop so deep like Lacazette does

I quite like the idea of a focal point central striker , we’d need to sell first, but for £30-£35 mill, and reasonable wages, Tammy Abraham is a decent punt I could get behind

hopefully a few things come to pass this week, 12m for Laca is decent for all involved. Someone will be getting a decent striker with experience and we’ll get 10m+ knocked off the Tammy fee we won’t have to pay till next season. Rich I made that same point a few days ago. As much as I prefer Laca for his ability to link over Auba, I think a competent midfield (new CM and AM) get more out of a striker with excellent movement and pace to stretch defences. In many ways I see Abraham as something of a middle man between Auba/Laca. Not as prolific as Auba and not as accomplished a link man as Laca, but arguably a better overall fit than both looking forward. Personally very content with the profile of players we’re showing interest in. Under 24, good pedigree… Read more »

I like what I’ve seen of Abraham as a player but I’m not 100% sure he’d be a hit here. Given that he (apparently) wants big wages, what happens if he doesn’t work out? Could this be yet another player we can’t move him on until his contract runs down?
Like him as a player, like his age, but not on 100k pw. The risks greatly outweigh the possible rewards imo.

Pleased to see the Dortmund++ model being introduced, what we should have been doing for a long time, progressive & sustainable way to run a football club in the modern era. Things definitely can be won with the kids, both in the short and long term. The only issue I can foresee is the TEARZ from the majority of the fan base when we get to the point of selling the gems we have crafted. That’s not the case Charlie. You’re getting a bit hung up on the ‘sexy names’ aspect like Ishola has in the past. It’s being uncomfortable with us shelling out over 100m for White, Ramsdale and Abraham. 3 players that are midtable calibre as of now with the hope rather than expectation that they will go on to be top drawer ones. For that kind of money you would be hoping for players with a higher ceiling and ability to hit the ground running. Tammy Abrams is more proven than any of the incomings we have had this summer

I wish we had this option last summer when Auba’s deal was up because Laca is the better of the Auba-Laca axis

That said, it makes all the sense to get Tammy now. He’ll easily replace Laca’s goals albeit it with more missed opportunities.
Arsenal can’t afford more players to run down their contracts.

Balogun is three years behind Tammy. He needs to be sent out on loan to a club where he will play week in week out.

Champagne Charlie

Weagle

How do you arrive at them being mid table calibre? Again it’s more a case of you deciding their level before a ball is kicked.

Guns of SF

Tammy is tall, what we need in a striker. Auba is tallish but not a good header of the ball. Not that Tammy is a Jimenez type but having a taller player also helps us on set piece defense. We can actually also cross balls in to someone who can head them in… will diversify the attack somewhat….

Rich said it right, we need better CAMS and CMS so Laca does not need to drop so deep. Its our mids that need a revamp. We still need 2 CAM IMO

WengerEagle

How is this replicating the Dortmund model? Dortmund have paid 25m+ for a player only five times in their entire history: 1) Ousmane Dembele for 30m (Sold him to Barcelona one year later for 130m) 2) Mats Hummels- 27m 3) Andre Schurrle- 27m 4) Diallo- 25m (Sold him to PSG a season later for 35m) 5) Mkhitaryan- 25m (Sold him to Man United for 30m) They have also never paid more than 30m on a player. In only our second summer window under Arteta we will have already spent 25m+ on five players if we do indeed bring in Ramsdale… Read more »

Which means what exactly for how any of them would play for Arsenal?

The two from lower sides have been standout players according to their fans – both voted the player of the season. Bit of a stretch to get that without being a standout. And seems odd you’d discount Abraham leading Chelsea to 4th before last season, apparently his value resides purely in the season he wasn’t fancied by a new manager.

Xhaka won’t stay. The clubs are £2 million or so apart . It’s more a point of principle but you can’t keep someone who is crap who clearly wants to leave. And most Gooners want him to leave . I get all of that Rich but it still doesn’t merit the Dortmund comparison. Our wages for incoming players blows theirs out the water.

You also can’t say for sure that the players will retain their value even bought young. Welbeck and Chambers were bought for a combined 35m at age 23 and 19. We couldn’t get offers for the latter and the former slipped out the back door a few years later.

We have never spent this kind of money on young English players before with fees of over 100m for the trio. That would make Wenger’s head spin.

I’d call Abraham’s 15 PL goals ‘leading them to CL football’ more of a stretch than labelling him midtable calibre. For a fairly basic ST (your favourite and correct description of 10 PL goal Pepe) 15 goals isn’t that eyebrow raising really, he was phased out for Giroud even by the latter stages of that season in the run-in for 4th.

As for Fan’s Player of the Season, who else was even up for consideration for Sheffield? They were historically terrible, I’d take being player of the season for an outfit that bad with a massive bucket of salt.

Rich

WE It’s about context, if we get £12mill for Lacazette who’s 30, and £15 mill for Nketiah, who both have 12 months on their deals We then sign Abraham for £30-£35 mill who’s 23, on a 5 yr deal, on 65% of the wage outlay Then over the course of the next 5 years, that will more than balance itself out I agree we pay our players too much, and that those wages then become detrimental in our ability to sell well But I see no way we sign another striker, without selling at least 2 first, we just don’t… Read more »
