ARTETA TALKS CHARACTER

by .

Here we are people, welcome to Friday. It’s been a fun week.

There’s not a lot of news doing the rounds. David Ornstein set tongues wagging when he suggested Arsenal might not have the funds to finance a Maddison deal.  Honestly, that sounds about right… Arsenal dropping £70m on a creative midfielder felt a little bit wild to me. If we went to £35-40m for Buendia, that seems closer to the number you would expect. That said, odd that there are so many strong stories that the player wants Arsenal. Surely Edu wouldn’t harass a player without knowing the costs?

There’s a lot of general angst in system about how we’re spending money we haven’t spent.

I don’t think Arsenal will pay £32m for a backup keeper if Bernd Leno stays this summer, that would be a wild amount of cash to send to a club that has just been relegated… who cares what they paid for him in the first place. There can’t be a recession in football with the only club not benefitting from it being Arsenal.

There are still plenty of bargains to be had around Europe, Houssem Auoar scored a cracking volley for Lyon last night, and we know they are looking to move on talent to raise funds.

Quite incredible how slow transfer business everywhere seems to be dragging.

Granit Xhaka still hasn’t moved. This Roma negotiation is painfully boring considering the hype started before the Euros. I can’t blame Edu for standing firm on a decent fee. The Swiss was in the team of the tournament and he’s only 28 years old. He’s literally at the peak of his powers and we can only squeeze £20m for him.

Ralph Hassenhutl made a point that seems to be very on point.

“At the moment, in the transfer market, it’s always the same,”

“Everybody wants players; nobody has money.

“Everybody wants to have the most money for his players when he wants to sell it and that keeps everything on hold.

“Therefore, a lot of players are running down their contracts and finally leaving for free. This money is what smaller clubs are missing then.

If Stan K hadn’t tried his luck at the super league, we’d be in the same boat this summer, because there’s no way we’d be raising enough capital to splash properly

The interesting thing is that no one is accepting the deflationary realities of the game for almost everyone. If all clubs just operated at a lower level, things would move, but it seems like no one wants to blink first just in case other clubs are hoarding pots of gold.

Arteta has been talking about what he wants from players at Arsenal and I like it.

“Absolutely there is another character in this dressing room that transmits every value that I would like to transmit to the club and our fans [and it is Kieran],”

“Again, it is young, hungry, talented, and people with huge desire and again he has all four ingredients – and he didn’t want to talk about anything other than staying here.

“That character, I think it shows on the pitch – when anything happens that is not going for us, you don’t give up, you just raise your level, try to be better and transmit that to the rest of the team so they all believe.

“Kieran has this capacity, and Emile as well, to lift the crowd with an action, Gabi Martinelli has this capacity – and this is something you either have or you don’t have.”

The vision is coming out piecemeal, but this is something I think most of us wanted to hear heading into the new season.

  • Clarification on what sort of players Arteta wants to take us to the next level.
  • Confirmation that there’s a type of player he loves.
  • Some certainty that young/hungry players are the future of the club.

Well, it’s all there. We’ll see more Gabi next season, ESR won’t be a bit part player replaced by a clogger, and KT is probably in the running to be our next captain at some point.

There’s still plenty to do this summer, but tying down the future is an achievement, and signing players at a lower age profile is exactly where we want to see things head.

Right, see you in the comments. Watch the additional content below. Have a GREAT Friday night.

Going to secure…

4th place, let’s hope Arsenal can do the same.

azed

The vision is coming out piecemeal,

Took just 18 months to get….

By 2040, we might finally get the full package.

azed

I should be 4th, because I read the post

Pedro why isn’t var used on this blog?

azed

Like I’ve said many many times in this blog, if we have 70M for Maddison, we should be giving that 70M to Aston Villa for Grealish along with Reiss, AMN and Eddie.

WengerEagle

Well we better see more of Martinelli this season Pedro is all I can say.

It has taken Tets a long time to appreciate his potential, he preferred Eddie Nketiah for far too long.

azed

Grealish and ESR on either side of Partey with Saka and Pepe either side of Aubameyang against bottom 10 team will get us closer to 4th.

Its one of the reasons why I think the Ben White spending wasn’t smart.

Jonnygunner

I read the post first…that’s what honesty does for you

azed

Well we better see more of Martinelli this season Pedro is all I can say.

Don’t get your hopes up WE.

I predict we’ll see the return of Aubameyang to the left this season.

azed

Holding, Chambers, Gabriel, Mari are good enough for this season.

Rather than spending 50M on Ben White, we should have spent 25M on a right back like Tierney, then add the remaining 25M to the 70M for Maddison and get Grealish.

At home and against bottom 10 teams away, I’ll play this

New RB —– Holding —- Gabriel —– Tierney

ESR ————– Partey ———– Grealish

Saka ———- Aubameyang ———- Pepe.

That team will score lots of goals and concede less because teams would be scared to attack.

Love to see your team play for us…not an expert but I’d probably have Mbape as a ‘rush goalkeeper’, failing that Martinez 🙂

If a CL team wants Grealish he won’t be coming to us no matter how much we offer.

4th place is delusional, with the money spent by City Manure, Pool and Chavs how in the world will the AFC squad better them? Either they have an open line to bribing the Refs and Var operators OR AFC has an open wish with a football genie to grant them top 4, otherwise not going to happen this season with a newly minted squad by end of September the talk on le-grove will have shifted to the 2022/2023 season.

Ray+in+LA

Sheba

Chambers is under-rated

That looks quite a strong right side, especially as White is able to cover at RB

Have better ingredients for three at the back with this squad if needed

[more likely Laca instead of Abraham]

MD-Gunner

AFC is NOT buying a backup GK they are buying a GK. Leno will leave, that is a given, and after this season he has 1 year left so they are buying a replacement for Leno. What a fuck up having to spend big on a CAM and now also on a GK, welcome to the newbs at Arsenal Management.

Arteta ““Kieran has this capacity, and Emile as well, to lift the crowd with an action, Gabi Martinelli has this capacity – and this is something you either have or you don’t have.” If I was one of these 3 I would be slightly concerned.. Praise from Arteta means nothing , ask Ozil, AMN, Martinez, Nketiah and saliba.. I have a lot of faith in him.” Arteta on Ozil”his attitude in training since the day that I walked in… Read more »

Kroenkephobe , You sound like a man could do with a few drinks and taking your mind off our current ‘leadership ‘. I can’t help you with the former but I trust you can sort that out yourself. As for the latter, I’ve been thinking of the greatest saves( in my lifetime). Bloody difficult I can tell you, narrowing it down to 5 meant dozens of incredible saves had to be excluded. But for what it’s worth here’s my final 5,in no particular order. What do you think mate? Who would you add/ exclude? I’m sure I’ve forgotten some crackers along… Read more »

Pierre,
The 2nd save alone was incredible, unbelievable reflexes in fairness. But when you sit down to pick your top 5 the amount of sensational saves you have to omit is insane. But that one is close, I’ll give you that for sure.

WengerEagle

Almunia

Fair few to choose off of this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny2S4YURXBA

1:14 is an absurdly good save, the pace and direction of that bullet header going straight into the top scorer and to get a strong enough hand to turn it around the post. Not sure who the GK is but it looks like Joe Hart maybe?

The GK header off the crossbar and reflex save combo too is stunning, think it happened in South America.

And my own bias kicking in here but Seaman’s save vs Sheff Utd was breathtaking. 40 years old making that save…

WengerEagle

This Buffon save vs Zidane in the World Cup Final in ET has to be up there too, for the importance along with save itself. That was an absolute rocket header and would have gone through any other GK.

Whatever happens, after the spend this summer, I expect Arteta has 6 months to make it look like it MIGHT work! If we’re languishing in 9th or 10th come November/December, only one thing can happen surely?
The other thing that has hardly been mentioned is that it matters not if Ek comes back in with a 2.2billion bid, this is the Kroenkes saying they are committed!

We are definitely rolling out with the misfits for the Brentford game. It’s in like 20 days time or so.

I find Arteta’s ‘comms’ difficult to understand because I’m always hoping for plain, honest language. But I don’t think that’s the worst of his problems. It’s much more to do with flaws in his thinking and an innate stubbornness and tendency to be over cautious. He speaks really good English but he sounds like he could be David Brent’s boss at wernham and hogg. You’ve surely been around some serious corporate bullshit terms in your career right?

Almuniasaynomore

Wenger Eagle
That’s some montage of saves, Christ almighty. I think you’re right,it was Joe Hart. The one where the keeper heads it onto the bar and then recovers to make the 2nd save is incredible. I’m not as impressed with the Buffon save, pretty routine for a class keeper, though he did a nice job for the cameras!

“I don’t think Arsenal will pay £32m for a backup keeper if Bernd Leno stays this summer, ”

That doesn’t sound very convincing. Like a part of you knows it’s the kinda stupidness Arteta would do. It’s not like you’re saying ” There’s no way we getting our trousers pulled down again and pay £32m for Grim-sdale!”

So if Leno does go this summer then £32m is alright for him then, yeah Pete?

Graham62

JHC, , there aren’t still folk on here who have faith in a manager who got rid of one of the best keepers in Europe, only to approve the signing of an Icelandic Fisherman and than, amazingly, show an interest in Ramsdale.

What a frigging mess.

Lot of hype around this Dressel chap in the swimming, been beating Phelp’s records in preparation for this Olympics. You seen much of him? Heavy favourite to win Gold.

GoonGoonerGone

Here we go once again about Arteta’s vision. The same vision that clearly saw the hunger in Willian, Mustaphi and Runarsson.
Figuratively speaking, it’s a cockeyed Arteta with a blindfolded Edu next to him.
It’s a pity the blind ones at Arsenal hired Arteta to learn to be a manager on the fly.
Six months I say, with Arsenal stewing in the usual mediocrity under our visionary manager, before the trigger is pulled.

Yeah maybe I was romanticising the Buffon save a bit because of my love for Buffon and Zidane but I do think that it’s an above average save given the pace of the ball, was very similar to Henry’s header winner vs Man United that went straight through the great Van Der Sar.

And it was close to being a World Cup winning save, bought them penalties.

When you have to quote teenage Cesc Fabregas it makes the point for me. Obviously there’s exceptions, but anyone that’s watched football for 5 mins knows that players aren’t the compete ticket in their teens – they’re not expected to be either.

Fabregas moved Vieira on at 16, Saliba had loan moves to Newcastle and Marseille. They are not equal. You play young players and you ride the inexperience out as they develop. It’s basic.

A bit random but it’s stange how Pepe can go from struggling to control a simple ball to being the 2nd coming of Messi with his dribbling skills and superb finishes.. Bernardo Silva as a Xhaka replacement?

He’s the very definition of a press resistant technician, would be our most accomplished central midfielder since Cazorla

Rich

Pierre

Completely agree on Pepe, he’s the best finisher at the club

We need to find a way to get the ball into him as early as possible in the final third of the pitch

He’s not really my style of player, my preference would be a technician rather than an impact player

But since goals are a problem, and we’re probably stuck with him, we have to try and extract maximum value out of him

I can see Pepe posting some really good end product numbers this season

Kris

Bernardo Silva IS amazing. Would be a fantastic addition. The only issue is a lot of lefties then – Saka, Pepe, and him. And he’s just as one-footed as Pepe. But he’s not defensive AT ALL. So never in a million years a Xhaka replacement. He could alternate with the trio I mentioned earlier. You have those 4 for the 3 positions right behind the striker, you’re made. Also, agree with Pierre. Pepe is excellent if he 1. plays regularly, 2. plays as a right wing forward instead of a right wing midfielder hugging the touchline. Actually think a 4-4-2… Read more »

Kris Cazorla wasn’t a defensive player either, but the best football we’ve played since the 2010/11 season, was in the first half of the 2015/16 and 2016/17 season, before Cazorla got injured Had Cazorla stayed fit in 2015/16, I think we’d have won the title I’d have no issue with Silva sitting next to Partey in our midfield, he played 18 times there for the Champions last season His versatility is a big asset, but having a deep lying midfielder who can take the ball in tight areas and beat the press, and also dictate the whole tempo of the… Read more »
