We’re heading into a weekend game with a team harder than Hibs and still things are dragging like a bag of feathers through tar.

The good news about this transfer window is there isn’t much choice when it comes to signing players. We don’t have enough quality to survive the season. We have one keeper, we don’t have a serviceable right back. We’re back to having one creative midfielder. Our midfield is still painfully limp. If the club wants to move back to the promised land, they’re going to have to start kicking things into gear.

The painful story doing the rounds in the media is it appears our interest in Martin Odegaard has not completely fizzled out. The Norwegian creative was very much the priority at the start of the summer and there is clearly still a feeling the youngster might be booted out on loan again when Carlo realises he’s not going to make the Champions League winners this season. I don’t like this sort of gamble because it shows that we’re not learning from past mistakes. We did this last season, spending all summer chasing Aouar, only to miss out, then have the least creative start to a season since 1887.

When is the cut-off point? Who are the players we’d miss out on if we wait? What are the consequences if it doesn’t happen? Do we have time to enact a back-up plan?

I cannot be hearing Arteta bemoaning the lack of time with new players… because we have known about this summer for a long time.

Waiting is a luxury a broken squad doesn’t have. We should be moving faster than this. Easy for me to say… but come on, hard not to lazily correlate Edu and his yacht parties with minimal action in the transfer window. Hungover, hating life every morning, palming off his duties to the super-agents… we’ve been here before.

Even the positives feel a bit wet. Arsenal is prepared to go all out for Locatelli… but the player wants Juventus. The back-up? Neves apparently. Like heading out to Oxford Street with your mum to buy your new sneakers in Sports Direct.

Again, all rumours, but the heavy rumours have been pretty accurate so far this window

The only thing we can truly temper these problems against is that we finished 8th. The fact we’re trying to spend big on quality players at all is pretty exciting. Romano said that Locatelli appreciates our efforts… a bit of a pat on the head, but there you go.

Finally, the new kit. I like it on people. The red is powerful, the players look good in it, I think it would be gut supportive. Not my fave, but totally acceptable.

BIG QUESTION. Why do the kits get leaked so early? Is there nothing Adidas can do about that? ESPECIALLY THE RENDERS.

I won’t be holding my breath for transfer news.
The whole market is slow and I expect Arsenal to be slower than the rest.

  2. Bill

Locatelli to Neves? Sexy? Hell no, but I think that’s an optimistic view.
    I’d rather have Bissouma.

Dither about Odegaard, miss out on Aouar. Waste time dreaming of Maddison- end up with……Buendia. oh no, he’s gone to Villa.

  3. Valentin

Real Madrid are not going to send Ødegaard on loan again. They will want hard cash currency and unfortunately Ødegaard should not be near the list of players to solve our immediate problems.

The last time Arsenal spent millions that they did not have on a slow, one footed midfield player, with problem to adjust with the pace of the EPL, the DoF got sacked and ultimately it cost the manager his job. I hope that Arsenal would not be stupid enough to repeat the mistake, anyway I would be fine with the sacking outcome.

  4. Marc

You really wonder what the “team” who are supposed to be doing transfers both in and out of the club do for most of the year. The transfer windows do not stop teams buying players – they just can’t be registered to play.

Whilst I appreciate the Euro’s were always going to slow things down I still don’t know why we didn’t have one or two lined up incoming or outgoing. We’ve got a really tough August with the season now exactly 4 weeks away. The rate we’re moving we’ll be starting with Xhaka still in the team and no arrivals. I can’t believe the Kroenke’s put up with this level of mediocrity with their employees in more commercial ventures.

“We have one keeper, we don’t have a serviceable right back“

    Come again?

Bellerin, Cedric, Chambers, and AMN are on the books. You could comfortably pick 2 of those and negotiate a season trying to crack top 4.

The area for concern is midfield. We have Partey/Elneny only, with Xhaka half out the door, and Torreira crying somewhere in the corner. Lakonga isn’t moving the needle next season, he’s part of rebranding the player profile (important) and at best will be surprisingly good depth.

ESR is the only playmaker at the football club. This is a huge issue coupled with above because beyond Thomas Partey on the pitch there’s a vacuum of creative ability that visibly stifles us throughout matches.

Not interested in a new RB, pick 2 of the 4 at the club and put funds into the heart of the pitch.

Biggest question is what CM is intended to look like next season. Double pivot deliciousness? Or double 8 delight?

I’m of the opinion we’ll see guys capable of playing in both systems, meaning mobile and tactically astute players that can pressure well and deliver with the ball at their feet both in terms of progressions and raw creativity. A tackle and pass sideways merchant isn’t going to work.

Not enamoured by our wait-and-see approach to Odegaard, he’s a fantastic talent and I’d love him here, but this path is a familiar one and we don’t walk it well. That said, I can understand leaving a creator late because ESR will start the season fit as a fiddle. CM needs addressed sooner however, cannot be starting the season with Elneny in the first XI – he is not good enough despite the laughable praise of last season.

Expect White to get over the line, followed sharpish by a notable midfielder.

  6. Guns of SF

ESR has shown some durability last season but kind of faded towards the end of the season. Came in with a bang in Jan. WE do need a CAM sharpish as a knock to ESR in the early stages screws us up pretty bad. The slowness of every TW is an indicator of how poor we are in the market.
By now, we should be finalizing deals for all targets… unless we are going for top players who were at Euros and need to start biz with them

  7. Guns of SF

A big no to Ode. Please no more.
Fella is not a needle mover that we need.
Does not seem excited about returning here anyhow…..

  10. NJ Gooner

This transfer window is slow because everyone is waiting for a first move to free up some cash. The Euros didn’t help that process. Sancho is the only big move to date that I can think of. Anyone else so far?

I may be wrong but assume Edu is waiting to sell (Xhaka? Willock? Torreira? or dump Willian???) to generate the cash to buy players. Otherwise, he risks getting stuck with releasing players for free or getting very little. The Kroenke’s won’t like that, and he knows it. THAT might actually get him sacked.

If I am right, then we will see a plethora of sales at the end of the window, when the cash begins to flow between clubs. Like any system, it needs a lubricant!

  11. Havyn

Arsenal has already been sold off to Kia Joorabchan, Sanhelli and his corrupt group through Edu.

They better sack Edu before its too late

  12. WengerEagle

Have little to nothing to contribute to the political talk on here but always enjoy reading it, the views from both sides of the fence.

It’s slap bang in the middle of summer and there is literally nothing Arsenal to talk about, it amazes me that there are people that have an appetite to talk about us every single sleepy day of the window but fair play to them.

I personally always welcome the change of pace when other topics are broached on here when there is little happening.

Perez has always struck me as a disloyal piece of shit.

How you treat your club legends says it all and Casillas and Raul especially had embarrassing ends to their time there, in stark contrast to Xavi, Puyol and Iniesta at Barcelona.

Even Ronaldo was barely given a goodbye after helping them to 4 Champions Leagues.

Yes, Perez hates everyone except Zidane and still the French legend has had enough of him. I think quite a few players have alluded to toxic atmosphere at Madrid and hostile fan base. Perhaps it explains sudden dip in form of some top class players who moved to Madrid.

Who could forget this gem imparted by Flo Perez in the wake of selling Makelele:

”His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and ninety percent of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways.

“He wasn’t a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makelele to be forgotten.”

Real Madrid in Makelele’s 3 years at the club:

    -x2 La Liga titles (2001, 2003), x1 Third Place (2002)
    – x1 Champions League title 2002, x2 Semi Finals (2001, 2003)

Real Madrid in the 3 years after his departure:

    – 0 League titles, x2 Runners Up (2005, 2006) , x1 Fourth Place (2004)
    – 0 Champions Leagues, x1 QF (2004), x2 Last 16 (2005, 2006)

Iran, Iraq and Syria on the one hand. As tricky as you can imagine, esp Iran.

Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil on the other. I preferred the latter ones by a long chalk unsurisingly. I once transferred from Tehran to Rio without passing through London. ‘Odegaard is a fantastic talent,’
With respect, that is one hell of a statement to make.
    Hyperbole at its best.
Perhaps, I was watching different Arsenal matches to some of you last season.
I saw no fantastic talent in Odegaard. I can’t think of a single match where he stood out because that’s what ‘fantastic talent’ do. Teams throughout the world are not really bothered about getting this fantastic talent for themselves.
It’s only Arteta who loves grabbing these rejects from Madrid like Ceballos and Odegaard and try to con the Arsenal fans that they are world class, giving them time and opportunities on the field while others suffer.
Real potential like Saiba is sent for the third year to develop without being given a single chance to prove his worth while the likes of Kolasinac et al who are not wanted by Arteta are given further opportunities to stink the place out.
There is a saying by Abraham Lincoln:’You can fool some of the people some of the time, you can fool some of the people all the time but you can’t fool all the people all the time.’
Pedro needs to understand that Arteta can’t fool the Gooners all the time.
Arteta is simply not cutting it at Arsenal and his most famous praise singer over here has lost the ability to pull the wool over many of our eyes anymore.
Spin doctoring can only take you so far because ultimately what you see happening on the field is the real thing, not this nonsense about how players love Arteta’s training methods.
Players are PRs for their clubs too. I always take whatever they say with many pinches of salt because they are so well paid by the club, they have to do a PR job to cover the manager’s flaws.
    Enough said.

Maybe,we can list the banned words here in ‘one’ word, then we know which words to omit from our posts,if that’s possible?

    I don’t know,just a suggestion.It’s all open to various ideas.

There is less than a month left until the new season and our squad is actually WORSE than last season. Incredible.

No backup GK, Mari and Holding our only CB options going into the first few games, Bellerin looks to be gone so who is our starting RB? Cedric, Chambers? Xhaka is gone… who is going to partner Partey at this point? Elneny?

Lacazette on his last year. Nelson doesn’t get any minutes, and he doesn’t look even remotely ready for the first team due to Arteta’s mismanagement. Willian still here?! Kola?!

What the fuck is going on at this club?

I love talking about Johnny Bostic – a terrific keeper and as you know up there in my pantheon of Gooner goalies. I’m guessing it’s either to do with career longevity or playing on into their 40s. I know Stanley Matthews played forever much to his credit.

It’s funny, I was idly watching the 87 cup final on TV a few days ago, when Sillett, Oggy and Houchen thoroughly pissed on Spurs’s chips in the final. A great schadenfreude memory.

Was only wondering there recently if there has ever been a player to be successful over a season in all 5 of the top European Leagues?

Cannot think of a single one to check all 5 boxes, best I could think of was Ibrahimovic who had a strong season in every league but the Bundesliga and Obafemi Martins who never played in France but had a semi-decent spell in all 4 of the other top leagues.

Could be an ambition of Ronaldo’s before he retires? Lol, nothing would surprise me with the man. A season or two at PSG followed by a season at Bayern Munich.

I love to talk NBA, UFC and Tennis as well as football but none of them are particularly popular subjects on here other than football and even at that, you can’t stray too far away from Arsenal talk a lot of the time.

Was a great fight for as long as it lasted, I was very wrong in my prediction. Dustin surprised me with how aggressive and confident he was and the lack of respect he gave to Conor’s pressure, was absolutely wailing on him like a red-headed step-child before the leg snap.

Conor should be finished but he will die on the hill of the window of excuse that opened up and push for that 4th fight with Poirier. And is Dustin really going to turn down another mega payday and a likely win? Doubt it.

No not me, but I had a friend and colleague also in the diplomatic service who was arrested by the Iranian police (pasdah?) for several hours because he was playing squash with an Iranian civil pilot. A few months after I left. We all were followed everywhere – properly sinister at times. I breathed a serious sigh of relief on the plane out, looking forward to the relative hedonism of Brazil.

I’d say Ibrahimovic is as close as you’ll get. Playing for several top teams was almost unheard of before the prem. Loyalty maybe, but the lack of agents manipulating moves was probably a bigger reason. Mark Hughes played for utd, barca and Bayern before moving to chelsea but they were a different club pre Abramovich.

And Connor was sad.Totally disrespected Poirier.Insulted his wife and everything else. His trash talk was lame. Not that,I’m into that-unless it’s funny and factual.

That said,Connor has hit his peak-pre Mayweather. As Khabib said, you can’t hit your peak twice.

Connor is just out for the pay day,and unfortunately or fortunately he’s taking his legacy down with his humanity.

He has no respect for any opponent or any human.

He’s inaction in the ring, lifestyle, hunger, mentality all contributed to the ankle break. The game’s moved on,Connor has not.He was a broken man on the floor, caught in a bear trap-screaming dog’s abuse to the world and sundry. In the throes of his meltdown, disrespecting Poirier’s wife about being in her DM’s.

Terrible image for UFC,if I’m being honest.

The man is toast. And they want to bring him back.Lost respect for UFC after that outburst from Connor lying on the ring floor, just showing the worst of humankind.

I like technical well rounded fighters and have a bias towards those who are jiu jitsu masters. Dariush is another, Khabib, Oliveira

So, no hostage taking in Tehran then?No not me, but I had a friend and colleague also in the diplomatic service who was arrested by the Iranian police (pasdah?) for several hours because he was playing squash with an Iranian civil pilot. A few months after I left. We all were followed everywhere – properly sinister at times. I breathed a serious sigh of relief on the plane out, looking forward to the relative hedonism of Brazil.

Yeah Conor disgraced and embarrassed himself in the build up to the Khabib fight as well as this Dustin fight, the post-fight shite about the wife was completely out of bounds and smacked of desperation. He also tweeted a picture of Dustin’s daughter this week, guy has lost his marbles and has gone off the deep end with the death of his star power and aura.

I never would have called myself a massive fan of the guy but his trash talking was entertaining back in the day vs Aldo, Mendes, Diaz, Faber, etc. Much lighter and actually funny. He was also electric to watch in the cage.

I’m actually a massive Rafa fan funny enough, I just fight Djokovic’s corner on here because it is filled with Fed and Rafa fans. Objectively I am not sure how you can honestly say that he will not retire as the GOAT if he finishes with the most Slams, positive H2H records vs Nadal and Federer as well as all of the weeks as World Number 1, Master’s 1000 titles, etc.

He is on pace to win the Golden Slam this year if he wins Gold in Tokyo and the US Open for which he is the massive favourite. Would be an unbelievable achievement at age 34, nobody else in the Open Era has ever won all 4 slams in the Calendar year.

He is also the only player in the Open Era to have won the Career Slam twice and slayed the beast by beating Rafa at RG.

Rafa coming back to win the US Open and tying Sampras/Federer/Connors for the most US Opens (5) along with denying Djokovic the Calendar Slam would be perfect grounds for the GOAT debate to rumble on.

I wouldn’t call his record at Australia dismal exactly, guy has been to 5 AO Finals. Only winning 1 of those 5 is a poor return I do agree but in 2 of the 4 losses he took Djokovic (2012, seen by many as the best ever tennis match) and Federer (2017) to 5 sets.

To me his record at Wimbledon is far more bizarre than anywhere else. From 2006-2011 he won it twice, getting to 5 Finals in 5 attempts. Aged 20-25.

And after that he went out in the first week of Wimby for 5 years on the bounce losing to journeymen like Rosol, Dustin Brown, Darcis and Muller as well as young Kyrgios.

He did have that classic marathon 5 set SF vs Djokovic in 2018 at Wimbledon and made the SF the next year too before getting beaten down by Federer but weird all the same those years he struggled.

Maybe his body was wearing down and it came too soon after the French Open each year?

Lyon’s finances have been hit by the coronavirus pandemic and Aouar is now firmly up for sale with a host of clubs looking to battle Arsenal to sign him. Liverpool view Aouar as a potential replacement for Wijnaldum, United are also keeping tabs on Aouar as a potential replacement for Pogba and Sp*ds are also looking to strengthen their midfield and promised to trump AFC’s offer.

Monfils is box office, most athletic player on tour even now.

I never liked Murray but realised recently that it was never really because of him, like the England national team in football in a lot of ways. It was because of the media fawning over him every Slam and proclaiming him as one of their own (hence he’s a ‘Brit’ and not Scottish).

Listening to Sue Barker and Andrew Castle was awful at the best of times, never mind when he played.

But yeah, dry sense of humour. Doesn’t take himself too seriously. Humble, hard-working and a hell of a player in his day. Not a like to dislike about the man himself.

This..That’s the crux-he was heavily reliant on his physical fitness.

Where as Federer was the artisan-the technician, who was less reliant on physical fitness and lasted as long. The stroke master.

Djokovic for me was like a remote controlled robot.I don’t know man. Can’t dispute his record. But something’s off about him for me.

But credit where credit is due.

Khabib is a POS. Happy to benefit from the trappings of American fight culture but refuses to go along with the spirit. Total hypocrite, and his actions at the end of the MacGregor fight were an absolute disgrace. No respect.

    I travelled by Eurostar.
Usually there is a train every 35 minutes from St Pancras to Europe (Paris, Lille, Bruxelles, Amsterdam). Right there is 4 trains per day.The guy at the station said usually it is about 25,000 passengers per day. Now on a good day they 2,500. Some day they have only 400.

    The cost for the test.
    Per person:
    Pre travel COVID Test: £129
    Return COVID Test: €50 ~ £45
    Day 2 & Day 8 Test: £162

If you want a Day 2&8 with release on Day 5: £198.
I work from home, so I can self isolate, otherwise I would have taken the test that is more complete that allows to stop self isolating if your pre, day 2 and day 5 tests are negative.

How is he a POS ? what do you mean?
Conor was baiting him, his family, father and his religion including his wife. I also agree he should not have overreacted but maybe if Conor didnt talk so much personal shit this would not have happned

One of my friend’s dad used to work for the now defunct RG (Renseignement Généraux) the French interior intelligence agency and was tasked to write down reports on the people who were visit ayatollah Khomeini in his retreat in the Parisian suburbs.

As he could not speak Farsi, he was assigned an young pretty interpretor. He started to spend more time serenading her than listening to the tapes than what was said. As punishment he was send in the small town. My hometown. There was tasked to report on union and Communists activists. Officially he was attached to the police, but everybody knew he was working for the RG. Especially the people he was supposed to spy on. He lost his plum assignment, any meaningful career and his lover. But every time he was speaking about Iran and interpreters, he had a glee in his eyes.

I don’t know what you’re moaning about – getting comments deleted I get binned on a regular basis.

Just because I said Pedro’s love interest is a shit manager and terrible human being – he really is getting a touchy bastard in his old age!

    Phd2020,

    3 days!

    No I am dead serious.
As a teenager, David’s dad was the coolest man on earth.
He had a 6 pack (not a dad’s body), a hero moustache, a sport car and he was able to talk about thing that were in the news.
In my small home town, knowing about Iran and Ayatollah was unheard of. He used to drive us to our sport activities with siren blaring so we were never late. For me, He was walking on water.

Looking back, it was pathetic and cringe inducing and quite sad. A middle age man living on his big former career. His wife was regularly depressed and had to be interned twice after attempting to commit suicide. She was a head nurse in a big hospital and she left a good position to follow her husband who instead of being sorry continue to cheat on her.

    Khabib has been dominant
I was never a fan, he grapples then grinds and pounds opponents to submission
    A tad boring
    Connor’s not well rounded enough
    Should’ve stayed at featherweight

    Jon Jones is the goat
UFC’s boring with him taking a break
If he beats ngannou that should cement his legacy
