WE LOVE YOU, BUKAYO

by .

England lost on penalties. It was very sad. Bukayo Saka took the 5th, his shot was saved, it was heartbreaking to watch.

… but I’m not angry that he took it.

It takes guts to step up. A true leader takes that sort of responsibility knowing full well how the country behaves when someone misses. That’s brave. Don’t give me ‘that’s not bravery’ shit either, a penalty for England is one of the gutsiest things you can do, full stop. Not many would do it. He did, we have to look after him now.

The disgusting abuse after the game is just a standard thing in sport. It’s not just an English thing, but last night, it felt like it. What more can be said here? Some people do it from the darkness of a burner account, others are stupid enough to do it from their real one. We shouldn’t tolerate it. It’s disgusting and weak.

You can fully witness the levels of pathetic we’ve allowed into our political system when the usual suspects go from badge kissing to dim takes like ‘maybe less time on the politics’ to burn a kid that feeds hungry kids.

We shouldn’t indulge it. We should bottle the togetherness the football brought our way. We should look forward to how this experience will take us up a level for the next World Cup. I don’t need a scapegoat, getting to the final was immense, I’m extremely proud of the team, and my love for Saka just went a little deeper.

The best way to solve for the nonsense? Have fucking great season at Arsenal and show the weapons what you have. Oh, and maybe hope the whizzes at the social media company could block certain types of language aimed at athletes. If you can block a IG post because it has protected music in the background, you can block a monkey emoji on a black athlete’s post. No excuses I’m afraid.

Short one today, back tomorrow.

Completely agree with you. I live in Ireland and I can safely say that there was a lot of support for the English team. The things which unraveled post match has turned the tide from sympathy to disgust. And all the because of so called ‘fans’ who went on a rampage against Italian supporters and their own players.

Just hope Saka and co who missed the penalty are mentally strong. And also hope that the authorities grow up a pair to take action against these unruly fans.

RecycledOldSock

Saka is brave and will recover, I’m gutted for him.

What I don’t understand about the morons who do this type of thing – just about every club and certainly all the major clubs have black players who are key parts of their squads. If I say something racist about a black Spud player I’m not only abusing that player but the black players at Arsenal.

It’s so stupid and counter productive that it just doesn’t make sense.

Ashwin Gunner

Marc

It comes down to how humans think and behave. When you want to upset somebody you say the meanest thing possible, because you are sure that it will hurt and pain them deeply (Which is your intention at the first place). What better way to hurt and deeply pain a player of colour, : Racially abuse them.

It all comes down to the upbringing of an individual when he makes a choice how to hurt others. Guess Some fans need a good lesson on how to live in a multi cultural society.

Cheney10

Social Media companies can sort things fast when it hits the bottom line. Governments need to ask collectively to pressure on the companies to sort it or face penalties and strict regulation in line with other media companies .
But a word on the perpetrators…. Mindless fools!

Pedro , great post . My love for Saka went up 1000x times, The guy gave it all for his country . Give him some extra days off , some good holiday destination far from here and he’ll come back 10x stronger than this.

Ernest Reed

Damn proud of Saka, he gave his all. To those bad mouthing him, get a life that means something for a change.

Arsenal should be and is proud to have a person of Saka’s character playing for them – he will come out stronger on the other side for certain.

“who went on a rampage against Italian supporters”

Are you sure this happened or have you been sucking up fake news?

Unless there were further events overnight you are alluding to an incident before the match where fans were shown being kicked and punched because they had stormed barriers to get into the stadium to watch the match for free.

These people shown being punched and kicked were predominately English.

redbro14

I am angry that Bukayo was made to take that penalty. Where were the senior players? Instead going for a win, with Bukayo playing from the start, he was put in when the ship has almost sailed. To put a young 19 year old to take a decisive penalty was a bad decision.

Kumar

This is my first ever post although a regular reader. We love you Bukayo and hold your head high. Don’t let the morons win.

Ethiopian Gooner

The positive thing about this unfortunate experience for Buka is that it’ll tremendously help him grow up very fast mentally. He’s a very good player as it is, but to take that next step and be a world class player experiences like this could be the defining factor. It will make or break him as a player and a man, i think in this kid’s case the former will be the case. This could be a blessing in disguise for him, i really hope so atleast. He should be very much proud of himself nonetheless, i know i am!

Hitman

Prefer it if we didn’t give the dimwits any oxygen.
And focus on the football.
Saka will only get stronger.
In hindsight Southgate paid them too much respect.
Need forwards to win a fame.
Team selection was wrong. Missed opportunity.

Bigper

The online abuse is from idiots all over the world not just this country, I’m not sure what good constantly highlighting a small minority of idiots achieves? The vast majority of people were behind the team and this tournament has brought everybody together. I think we’d be better off if we focused on that positivity and celebrated what football can do, but the media love to cause division and outrage as that’s what sells.

Ishola70

Saka was always going to get some vilification and nothing is out of bounds for some idiots.

Southgate himself was hugely vilified when he missed a penalty for England when a player and when Beckham got sent off in a World Cup match there were effigies of him hung on lamp posts.

Always going to happen unfortunately.

Pedro,

Best post you have ever written, and you have written a lot of good ones.

These people are monsters, and there is something deeply problematic with our world when they can get away with this crap.

Bless you.

GoonGoonerGone

Rashford and Sancho deserve everybody’s support at Arsenal too.
Irrespective of the teams we support, our race, our religion, our culture, our language, etc. We must embrace our common humanity.
The vitriol spewed on Daka, Rashford and Sancho is evil.

Ishola70

Southgate had already choosen his penalty kick takers before the match.

Some would call it planning ahead.

That’s why he did the double sub of Rashford and Sancho it is said.

But as some have pointed out sometimes it’s about the moment itself rather than this planning.

You can have a player that is earmarked for taking a penalty but the moment itself is just not right for them.

That he had planned to have two penalty takers in the first five who were not even on the pitch for that long coming off the bench seems faulty planning.

Danish Gooner

Sir Bukayo !!!!!

DigitalBob

The problem Southgate has is if he says forget the planning, “Who wants to take one?”, and then for example those brave players that step up(Grealish) miss, the question asked will be “was that part of the penalty planning in training, Sancho, Rashford and Saka were banging them in why didn’t you follow the plan”? For me the selection is not a mistake but the order is questionable for sure. As others have said usually the best penalty taker is first or last, to have our Saka taking the last one considering it may very well be make or break… Read more »

I also have a bit of sympathy for Pickford.

I said along with others that he looked a weak point for England and that he looked nervous but he was close to being a hero for England last night.

He made a very sharp save from the initial header that saw Bonucci bundled the ball home and he made two very good saves in the penalty shoot out.

WengerEagle

Yep, to piggyback off of what others have said much more eloquently on here today, Pedro included.

There are depressingly a lot of shitty humans knocking around, some crossing the line into pure scum.

Saka will bounce back from this, kid has all of the talent in the world and now we know that he has the guts to match. Was proud of him stepping up for such a massive penalty.

WengerEagle

Agree Ishola, I have given Pickford as much shit as anyone on here but he shut us up with a great tournament and shoot-out effort.

Re. Saka

He is in good company, Mpabbe missed his 5th one too.

Southgate completely at fault.
A complete dogs dinner of management in his biggest hour.

Saka should have started the match and then subbed.

Rashford and Sancho should have been on much earlier so they could get in the game and run at their oldies and be ready for the pens.

And he completely lost it, by removing his runner ups medal.

He wont be getting another one, so accept that one with good grace.

Agree with ID verification. You should also have to provide employment details, so your employment is terminated, or ie immediate suspension before summary dismissal upon being convicted.

Social media companies simply don’t do enough, nobody can convince me they can’t do more. Henry was right. His ‘copyrighted’ post was taken down in seconds, yet racist abuse is allowed to be posted and stay in for hours?

Pickford is like so many other goalkeepers including our own Leno.

He is a very able shot stopper but lacks in many other areas.

The ID verification is necessary to make free speech responsible speech.
Right now the Facebooks, twitter and googles] are profiting from the use of multiple accounts. No one should be able more than one account on a platform.

Once you take away the anonymity, you make people own what they say. The still need to make it possible to be able to operate under a pseudonym but the social media company should still have the ID ready.

Bertie Mee

A message circulated on What’s App a couple of weeks ago abusing footballers who took the knee didn’t have the right to make political statements because ‘ you’re only fucking footballers’. Last night showed why players did this .

Yep. My point about a nominal fee was because by paying, say £1.00, you have to provide personal info including payment details. But yes, I wasn’t suggesting we make anyone richer. Yeah provide ID and employment details on social media so that totalitarian governments can take revenge on anyone daring to criticize them by taking their jobs away or even getting them killed.

Bob N16

Dissenter, could you not argue that by taking the knee it exposes those people who are triggered to boo?

I don’t mind the players being unhappy with a loser’s medal, if it motivates them to avoid them in the future and win a final, I’d take that. I don’t think the Italians minded one bit, they were too busy celebrating. Apart from anything else the players were ‘grieving’ at the end of ET!

Taking the knee is such a wasted exercise, it is nothing more than optics. People who are not interested in bringing in real changes are often involved in such meaningless virtue signalling exercises. Take the knee for another 500 years and it won’t change a thing. It is meant to full the gullible and they fall for it hook, line and sinker every time.

Marc

TR7

I think the taking the knee thing has been hijacked by Sky to an extent. The Kick it Out campaign was doing a good job – I really think we’ve seen an increase in this type of behaviour since the taking the knee thing started with lockdown also causing problems.

Ishola70

It’s like taking of the knee requires booing.

If it is wholly accepted and there is silence and approval or just plain indifference then it loses it’s significance in challenging people.
