A little less football news to chew through today, but look, I’ll put in a shift regardless because that’s the type of player I am.

Bukayo Saka scored an absolute screamer against Austria to take the game for the mighty England. The 90 was quite uninspired if I’m honest. Gareth Southgate giving minutes to everyone felt a bit weird, no one needed to see Pickford between the sticks. It was fun watching Grealish draw fouls, people just love to kick him, a bit reminiscent of our very own Jack back in the day. He’s an awesome player, it’ll be very sad when he moves to Manchester City this summer… and Arsenal fans, please stop pushing him as an option on the internet, it’s depressing. Not as depressing as reading fans thinking they are too good for Raheem Sterling. What the fuck is wrong with people?

There’s big talk that Spurs are trying to lure Mr Conte out of self-enforced retirement to have a crack at Daniel Levey’s ‘CAN YOU HELP ME WITH A TROPHY’ problem. This move isn’t as banterous as Roberto Martinez. Conte worked wonders at Chelsea in season one, before things went south. He turned Inter Milan around. His pattern tends to be, step into a mess, win something, complain about lack of signings, get fired or retire as a result of petulance.

I honestly don’t know why he’d go to Spurs. Levy isn’t exactly free with the cash and the Spurs rebuild job is a big one. We’ll see though, who thought he’d replace Poch with Mourinho? Maybe Levey will give him control over transfers? Always remember he oversaw Morata, Zappacosta, Bakayoko, Drinkwater, and Ross Barkley.

There is a tantalizing rumour in the French press via Loïc Tanzi that we’ve been talking to Luis Campos about moving to Arsenal. I think we could all agree that a move like that would be immense for the football leadership at Arsenal. No one moves a club quite like him. A hire like that seems almost a little too smart for Arsenal, so I’ll hold judgement on that. He fits the bill though. He knows how to identify value, he’s good at picking coaches, and he’s built transfer eco-systems on small budgets… and won titles.

Arsenal will head to Florida this preseason for a Florida Cup with Inter, Everton, and Millonarios. UK Arsenal fans complaining they can’t go. Can you believe that? THIS IS NOT FOR YOU, NOT EVERYTHING REVOLVES AROUND YOUR NEEDS. I’ll be jumping in a camper van and heading down. I might even do some LGTV interviews. Should be fun.

Martin Ødegaard does not know what to make of Carlo heading back to Madrid.

‘He is a coach I know and with whom I had a good relationship when he was last there.’

‘In that sense, it is positive. But beyond that, one day has passed, so I do not know too much about what he thinks about things.’

The hiring of Carlo is a control move by Perez, so you’d imagine if the President likes Martin, Martin is what he’ll see in the side next season. There is also talk that he’ll be sent back out on loan again, so we’ll see.

Kola is coming back. Schalke can’t afford. Hopefully we can bin him off like we did Mesut Ozil.

The club announced the players released.

Men’s and women’s first-team squads:
Dani Ceballos
David Luiz
Leonie Maier
Martin Odegaard
Mat Ryan

No shocks there.

Let’s finish out on a FRESH podcast. Get your ears on it. I talk with Johnny about transfers out of the club, Willy Saliba, and the moves we should be making this summer. It’s a good one. No Arteta talk.

”Why would Man United have interest in Neves?”

Lmao, Ishola basing the quality of a player on a rumour from the Manchester Evening News.

Why don’t you have a word with Fernando Santos and ask him about Neves? Think he may his finger more on the pulse than Liam Wood from the Manure News, lol.

  2. Dissenter

Rambo just pointing out the sour grapes many are deploying now.

Buendia is now a horrible championship player … so why did we bid about £30 million, if you believe all the available sources?

  3. Ishola70

    Dissenter

Why should I respect you and your opinions on Xhaka.

One week you are saying sell him and the next it’s a defence of him.

You are like a schizo on the subject.

Make up your mind and enough with the defence of him if you want him sold.

  4. Emiratesstroller

    Rambo

I like Buendia, because he can play in both AMF and RW positions.

That does not mean that I consider him good value at £30 million or necessarily an upgrade
on what we have got at Arsenal.

He has played played for Norwich mainly in Right Wing Position over past 2 seasons. Do we
rate him above Pepe and Saka in that position?

Also if we are recruiting an AMF and spending that sort of money he should be a player at a
    level above Smith-Rowe.

  5. Ishola70

    Weagle

What do you know about the Manchester Evening News? Fuck all.

It’s a well known fact that local newspapers have their finger on clubs affairs than some of the national ones.

Besides it’s more than just a local rag reporting Man United interest in Neves.

So I will ask you again.

Why do Man United have interest in signing Neves if he is just above shit level?

  6. TR7

    WE

Been here on Le Grove long enough and seen so many players touted as absolutely brilliant every transfer window only to see them flatter to deceive when they actually play for us or other PL clubs. I don’t watch much football outside Arsenal so yeah I do not always have a long list of desired players but most of these flavor of transfer window generally disappoint.

Keita, Pepe, Harvertz…. there’s a long long list. These players were praised to high heavens on the blog. In fact I don’t remember any player who lived up to his billing except half a dozen and I am talking about 10-12 years here.

  7. Batistuta

You can see where the anger on Buendia is going from. In a position which we badly need someone, can play across the front line, has league experience and from what anyone’s seen of him, looks like he’d have been perfect for us.

I’m not so enamored by Odegaard or even Aurora for that matter even if they’d be okay for us but thy don’t come with the goal scoring threat from midfield that a Buendia wild have come with and that’s where maybe the anger is for me.

Marko saying 40 million is a bit much and recommending some foreigner who’d come here and need more time to settle in and who doesn’t have anything close to the numbers the lad has is just typical let’s get a foreigner shinny name thing

    TR7

There have been a lot of failures and whoppers over the years like Morata, M’Vila, Melo, Xhaka [guilty myself there], Schneiderlin, etc but the following were also hailed on this blog before they moved to the PL:

Bruno Fernandes, Leroy Sane, Firmino, Salah, Diego Costa, Alexis Sanchez, De Bruyne, Fabinho, Van Dijk, Bernardo Silva, list goes on.

That’s just football, you can’t call them all right or even most of them right. Every club has their long list of big money flops along with the great signings.

I’d be willing to bet that the failure rate for PL to PL moves on here is no less than big money overseas ones.

  9. Useroz

Never is no Buendia type. Not an alternative.

As a replacement for Elneny, sure … if there are spare tens of millions laying around.

  10. Batistuta

Also for a club that kept talking about being ruthless this summer, we seem to have started in the same slow paced, uninspiring targets kind of summer we generally usually have, same old same old if you will.

I hope it picks up though for our own good anyway. They must know with fans back in the stadium and with the horrible season we just had, fans won’t be so patient with the team or manager anymore

  11. WengerEagle

Big money PL moves that we sought after on here included Schneiderlin, Benteke, Maguire, Drinkwater, Lukaku, Nathan Ake, Matt Doherty, Sigurdsson, Batshuayi, Moussa Sissoko, Mata.

How did they all pan out?

  12. Leftside

All the other fans I know that go to matches are very dissatisfied with Arteta. He’s not in for an easy ride with these mediocre 8th place finishes, trying to control every sequence of the game and poor performances we continually put up.

  13. Captain Tierney

    andy

Your cant really compare Odegaard and Ceballos. Ceballos only played a handful of games where he shone ( post 1st lockdown).

Odegaard had been on a constant toward and he was really good at Sociedad. Then he and ESR transformed our season.

  14. WengerEagle

    Ishola

I could give less of a fuck about what Liam Wood thinks that Ruben Neves would bring to the CM position you goofball.

I’ll ask you again, why does a gaffer who has worked intimately with him for Portugal not fancy him or give him the time of day for the NT if he is so great?

I suppose he should read more of the Manure Evening News to inform himself, would save him having to turn up to the training session to assess him.

  15. Peckobill

Reports emerging that buendia doesn’t rate the job arteta is doing at arsenal as a reason he tuned us down

  16. Ishola70

    Weagle

I have already told you that it is not just the Manchester Evening News that report Man United being interested in him.

There are even silly youtube videos proclaiming it so the interest is well known and wide.

So why would they have an interest in him?

He’s just above shite according to you.

  17. Thorough

If we lost out on Buendia because our bid was half-hearted and we preferred Odegard then there’s a problem.
How did Arteta oversee Odegard for half a season and decide hes the AM of our dreams? Sauce is pants.

  18. TR7

‘Big money PL moves that we sought after on here included Schneiderlin, Benteke, Maguire, Drinkwater, Lukaku, Nathan Ake, Matt Doherty, Sigurdsson, Batshuayi, Moussa Sissoko, Mata.’

Don’t know about others but I have never rated any one of them except Juan Mata who anyway did very well for Chelsea.

  19. Peckobill

Arteta is going to waste the transfer window chasing Odegaard to find out on the last day he’s staying in Madrid .
Most of the signs are he’s staying

  20. WengerEagle

Buying from abroad was never a problem before 2016. I didn’t see anyone complain about us bringing in Alexis Sanchez, Ozil, Cazorla, Monreal, Koscielny or Mertesacker.

Or Hleb, Rosicky, Nasri, Sagna and Arshavin.

I get the merit in buying PL proven players and do think that there should be a healthy mix but to only want PL signings like Buendia, Zaha, Neves, Bissouma, Aarons [not even PL proven] is weird.

Our ineptitude in bringing in overseas talent in the past handful of years has scared most on here into thinking that every foreign import is more likely to flop/not settle.

Vast majority of the current best PL players are overseas exports. De Bruyne, Salah, Van Dijk, Ederson, Alisson, Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, Gundogan.

  21. Captain Tierney

    WE

Its the recency bias humans have ingrained in them. Since our recent Foreign imports haven’t worked so well, its now changed the narrative to PL players or bust.

Leicester have built a top 4 challenging team buying good foreign players on the cheap

  22. WengerEagle

‘There are even silly youtube videos proclaiming it so the interest is well known and wide. So why would they have an interest in him? He’s just above shite according to you.’

So you’ve gone from a hack Man United Evening News writer to the ‘Welcome to Man United’ compilations that excited kids throw up on Youtube in anticipation at any wet rumour about said player coming to the club in validating your assessment of Neves as a top player, lol oh dear.

That Fernando Santos fella wouldn’t know would he. Liamy Wood has all the inside scoop and sauce.

  23. Mr Serge

I would go for a foreign player everytime over an average prem proven player
How many players have Leicester brought in that are poor ? 2 maybe 3

  24. China1

Dissenter ‘ How come every manager he’s had has trusted him?’

Because he is according to management in the club one of our most professional players who obviously is fully supportive of every manager he’s played under, has shown willingness to listen, takes everything seriously and is a hard worker. He’s also experienced .Managers in any profession LOVE those qualities and are often willing to sacrifice a bit of quality for a person like that because

    1) they are seen as a great example for their peers
    2) they do what you say without question
    3) they are extremely easy to manage
    4) you know what you’re going to get from them

That is why xhaka has been picked for 5 years straight. And that emphasis on the points above over actual footballing quality is *one* of the core reasons why our midfield went form being one of the best in Europe to honestly trash. With partey in and ESR etc it’s started to move forwards again last season, but he has been a mainstay on a midfield that went off a cliff in terms of quality and along with a few other factors was one of the key culprits.

  25. China1

The ‘he got picked by wenger, emery and arteta’ argument holds zero water because how did it work out for those 3 managers? 2 got sacked and the other should’ve.

  26. Mr Serge

China the reason we keep picking Xhaka is because he is better than all the other shite we have that’s a shit reason the CM needs a complete overhaul imo

  27. WengerEagle

    CT

Exactly, not to mention Citeh too.

Team is full of foreign exports in Ederson, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo, Gundogan, Rodri, De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Ferran Torres, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho.

They have also bought quality PL proven players like Sterling, Mahrez, Walker and Stones to balance it out.

It’s all about striking that balance, shouldn’t be all foreign imports or just all PL signings.

  28. Ishola70

    Weagle

The point is it’s been widely reported.

From according to you silly local rags to youtube and everything in between and above and below.

That kids decide to put up a youtube video is only evidence of how widely this interest in Neves has been reported from Man United.

But of course this doesn’t tie in with your almost complete dismissal of him does it.

Weagle there are plenty of posters on this thread today that haven’t agreed with you and your dismissal of Neves me being one of them.

You should take this on board.

  29. Useroz

”That does not mean that I consider him good value at £30 million or necessarily an upgrade on what we have got at Arsenal.

It’s not unlike saying that a certain player who showed great form for 12 games was never enough to be considered good!

Many believe the Championship is ‘tough’ , and Buendia did so very well in getting goals and assists, consistently, over a whole season… that’s not enough?

How many players have had progressively brilliant forms for 3 to 4 seasons before being linked with us, or our competitor teams for that matter?

Now with Villa likely to bag the guy, Buendia had played more in RW and may not be quite right the CAM we desperate need ?

YT clips aren’t definitive but it’s quite clear from where about Buendia got his 30+ goals and assists in 2020/21… not quite the RW unless any areas other than LW became RW!

Also who in our squad would be close?? Seriously how many goals have our midfielders scored collectively?

How many goals and assists from Ode in a half season? What may even be an optimistic projection if he stayed ext season? 10? 15 in total?

  30. Nelson

Arteta’s system is no risk ball possession.Odegaard fits his system to a T. I prefer the more direct but risky Marcelo Bielsa’s system.

  31. Positive pete

So to sum up.We did put a bid of £30 million in for Buendia BUT it was a half hearted one, purely to test the waters & were not prepared to go above that valuation or get into a bidding war with villa because we have better alternatives?.secondly, our principle target at the moment appears to be Ruben Neves.Who is NOT an alternative to Buendia but a replacement for Hacker?
Is that the jist of it? Answers on postcard please.Especially from those losing their shit at the moment.

  32. Ishola70

Xhaka does a completely different job to the rest of the midfielders in his deep position.

He is the best deep lying midfielder we have but he is the only one we have that specialises in that role at the club so yes he is the best for being the only one.

He gets picked and has been picked regularly because Wenger in his later years and Emery and then Arteta have decided to keep the deep lying midfield role in the side.

    It’s quite simple.

No deep lying midfielder role wanted in the side any longer means no Xhaka.

  33. WengerEagle

Ishola rallying the troops now haha, safety in numbers.

Whatever makes you feel better dude. Never did answer the Fernando Santos question for obvious reasons. You keep on reading the Manc Evening News to gather evidence on the quality of players.

  34. Peckobill

Neves is a slight improvement on xhaka but he neither climbs or drops us in the PL table and the sad part is what we get for xhaka and pay for neves we’d probably be 10 – 15 mill down to not move the needle an inch .

  35. Terraloon

Big money PL moves that we sought after on here included Schneiderlin, Benteke, Maguire, Drinkwater, Lukaku, Nathan Ake, Matt Doherty, Sigurdsson, Batshuayi, Moussa Sissoko, Mata. How did they all pan out?

“You keep on reading the Manc Evening News to gather evidence on the quality of players.”

And you google Ruben Neves for the last month and you will find it is more than just that local rag that is reporting Man United interest in Ruben Neves.

  37. Emiratesstroller

    Useroz

You can use the same argument to Pepe who has scored most of his goals when cutting into
    the centre.

What is interesting and not really discussed on Le Grove is the number of wingers linked with Arsenal in recent times.

Let me pose a different question, which is seldom if ever discussed on Le Grove. We know that Saka is rated one of the most versatile players at Arsenal. Is it conceivable that the
club might consider playing him in a more central role ie AMF next season?

  38. Valentin

People are confusing the symptom of our midfield problem with the root cause. Xhaka is not the cause of our problem, he is a symptom of it.

First problem, Arsenal switched to a Tiki-taka type of play. Instead of playing that powerful, quick , dominating type of football, we move to that slow ponderous, possession based style of football.

Second problem and it is related to the first. Following Cesc departure and Diaby injuries, only Cazorla was of the necessary quality to play that type of football. That style of football required very specific players, both Barcelona and Spain suffered when Iniesta and Xavi left. Messi hided Barcelona decline but eventually it showed. There are very few academies that have produced players in that mould of the required quality. World wide there are very few heirs to Iniesta, Modric.

The third problem is the fact our manager does not realise the first two or at least refuse to budge from his conviction. In fact he double down on it. ManCity can afford that level of stubbornness, Arsenal can’t.

Everybody looks at the impact Fernandes has had on ManUtd and think that one player can replicate that here. But at ManUtd, Fernandes has the freedom to push forward. Arteta has now switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation. The two central midfielders will not be allowed to push forward. So they may help release the 4 attackers further up, but they can’t have the same impact that Fernandes.

Arsenal faces a lot of low bloc teams, so it needs a pro active No10, that will create openings by his dynamism and quick passing rather than somebody who will wait for an opening and then make the pass to a behind the defense runner. That mean relinquishing sterile possession in favour of penetration and that’s ESR not Ødegaard. But that’s not the way Arteta wants to go.

  39. Frost

Not sure who needs to hear this but Ruben Neves is not an upgrade on Granit Xhaka. (Not a downgrade too tbf)

Better than Xhaka defensively, who isn’t, but is absolutely NOT a better passer than Xhaka. Considering rookie likes to build up play from deep, it is sort of an important requirement to have.

If we are prioritising defensive actions then BISSOUMA pisses all over Neves as a Xhaka replacement.

LOCATELLI is who I’d go for if I’m looking for a clear upgrade on Xhaka but hey, Price.

  40. Ishola70

Brozovic would be an ideal replacement for Xhaka.

How much is he on at Inter?

He is going into his last year at Inter.

    Throw some money at him.

    He could do a Partey.

  41. Mr Serge

I thought the kronkes where going to back us due to the ESL debacle
Kronkes out they suck our decline has been steady since they took over
Oh how i wish Fiszsman sold to usmanov and dein

  42. Ishola70

Who gives a fuck about passing all the time.

I have already asked this question to Dissenter.

Where has Xhaka’s passing got us since he arrived at the club?

  43. WengerEagle

”Neves is a slight improvement on xhaka but he neither climbs or drops us in the PL table and the sad part is what we get for xhaka and pay for neves we’d probably be 10 – 15 mill down to not move the needle an inch .”

”Not sure who needs to hear this but Ruben Neves is not an upgrade on Granit Xhaka. (Not a downgrade too tbf)”

”I would go for a foreign player everytime over an average prem proven player
How many players have Leicester brought in that are poor ? 2 maybe 3”

Would you looky here, not quite all one-way traffic on your pet Neves now is it Ishola? Since you hold the consensus of the blog opinion so dear to you.

  44. Ishola70

We suffer because we are basically a man down in central midfield with Xhaka in the side.

But some want to fixate on passing.

    Go figure.

  45. Terraloon

I know so many point toward Leicester and talk about their recruitment but despite all the plaudits their finances are a total mess. The money they owe in respect of transfers is close to 50% of their current annual turnover

Their last set of accounts showed that excluding player trading they spent 105-% of income on wages. (£158 million) If that translated to Arsenal it would mean Arsenals wage expenditure would be circa £350-£400 million

To be fair their figures didn’t take into account player trading and yes they made some decent sales , well they sold Maguire for £80 million, but they actually spent£96 million .

Leicester spend far more than many realise on transfers than many realise and yes to a degree since they won the league they have turned decent profit from selling the likes of Kante, Drinkwater, Maghrez &Chillwell they have spent quite sizeable fees on players like Silva, Slimani, Benkovic, & Ghezzal players who were bombed out in a blink of an eye

  46. Ishola70

lol Weagle pulls just one out of the hat and one that has a fixation with Xhaka’s passing.

Maybe you secretly like Xhaka’s passing as well Weagle.

His passing has been such a benefit to us hasn’t it.

  47. Dream10

We went thru a spell in Nov/Dec where we scored four goals in ten matches and won only one of those ten matches. We scored 55 goals in 38 matches. Club should be prioritising offensive productivity

After Neves, my bet is on Tapsoba or another CB coming in and a few exits with Saliba being one of them

  48. Dream10

The only player Arsenal should be signing from Wolves this summer is Pedro Neto. He has a great skill set and a high ceiling.

Saka to miss Romania match due to injury

  49. Frost

“Do we need Ruben Neves”either as an addition or a replacement?”

Doesn’t move the needle one bit as a replacement, so No. Would absolutely take him as a first choice backup to someone like LOCATELLI tho… Or someone of that ilk if he’s beyond our reach.

  50. Peckobill

Bloody hell , neves being priced at £34 mill .
It would cost us £20 mill + to have him replace xhaka to not improve us and still finish between 7th and 12th ( 7th would be arteta’s maximum effort )

  51. Dream10

Coach should have been sacked last November
It should be the first thing the club do before signing a player. Still lots of time before the window opens on Wednesday

  52. Frost

“Yeah the coach that could be on his way out by this coming December.”

Most probably, but he’s in charge of transfers this summer so a player that can pass & hit those long balls like Xhaka will sort of be an important requirement

  53. CG

This Neves- the Cedric Soares of midfielders?

In that he is coming from a mid ranking club. Bland as they come. Not going to rock the boat.
Neat and tidy. But will ultimately keep you from progressing to the upper echelons.

Mikel loves these types. (They remind him of himself as a player.)

And Edu will love him too- because no one else will want him for £30 million and he speaks the same lingo – so its an easy negotiation for him.

His speciality is buy out clauses. Negotiations with the sharks , forget it.

An imbecile of the highest order, this Edu.

  54. Frost

20Mil is alot (more like 30+ for neves) for someone who doesn’t move the needle.

Would rather pay 40-50m for someone who does.

  55. Ishola70

    Frost

“Most probably, but he’s in charge of transfers this summer so a player that can pass & hit those long balls like Xhaka will sort of be an important requirement”

So long as that player can engage central midfield for required periods as well as hitting these long balls then all good.

People are still so underestimating the handicap of having a midfielder that has to be ushered away deep who can’t engage the middle to any great extent.

Maybe they are wedded to the deep lying midfield concept.

    Who knows.

  56. Peckobill

    Dream10
Yeah I’m starting to get the feeling with us being linked with and probably end up with such average boring tat like neves or berge ,as disheartening as it is I think I’d rather we don’t spend anything ( we not getting the good targets anyway when players pick smith over arteta ) and just focus on getting players out .
The coming season is a bust anyway sticking with arteta might as well ride it out till December when he gets sacked and keep more money for a manager who knows what’s he’s doing and can hopefully attract players over the likes of villa . We going going to be lumbered with more deadwood to get rid of anyway

  57. Marko

Ruben Neves would be a perfect Xhaka replacement. Should have bought the lad (much like tielemens) when we were linked to them when they were teenagers impressing in the champions league

  58. Frost

“Bland as they come. Not going to rock the boat.
Neat and tidy. But will ultimately keep you from progressing to the upper echelons.”

Stop making sense CG. We all feel dirty when we agree with your posts on here ffs.

  59. DigitalBob

Dream10 – You and I are in agreement, Neto is the one to look at Wolves.

If Neves is coming in as Xhaka’s replacement it is an upgrade in the position so its a positive, however he is as many have suggested not the most athletic and is also prone to the odd yellow card like our own Granit.

Buendia to Aston Villa is disappointing but I suspect he was an option rather than our primary target. Arteta and Edu are probably waiting for Carlo to confirm if Ode fits into this plans before bidding the best part of £50 million for him.

  60. Ishola70

    Moving needles?

Having a player that can actually compete in central midfield will do more good for this team than you may think.

Xhaka has been at the club so long now and played so many matches that being a man down in central midfield is seen as normal.

  61. WengerEagle

‘If that translated to Arsenal it would mean Arsenals wage expenditure would be circa £350-£400 million’

Terraloon, we have spent half a BILLION since 2016 on new players and look at the state of us in that timeframe, perennially outside of the top 4 and closer to midtable in recent seasons.

Leicester have brought in a shedload from the sales of Maguire, Chilwell, Mahrez, Drinkwater, Kante to offset some of their heavy spending.

Have they gotten every purchase right, of course not. Some mares in there with Praet, Ayoze Perez, Slimani and Adrien Silva but by and large their spending has been excellent with the likes of Maddison, Tielemans, Ricardo Pereira, Soyuncu, Iheanacho, Castagne, James Justin, Ndidi and Fofana all brought in.

  62. WengerEagle

‘The only player Arsenal should be signing from Wolves this summer is Pedro Neto. He has a great skill set and a high ceiling.’

    What’s this, another Neves naysayer.

    Ishola’s head must be spinning.

  63. Marko

Marko saying 40 million is a bit much and recommending some foreigner who’d come here and need more time to settle in and who doesn’t have anything close to the numbers the lad has is just typical let’s get a foreigner shinny name thing

Ah Bati I thought you better than that. It’s not a hard concept to understand I don’t think a championship player is worth 40 million I think that in this current climate 40 million can get you better than Emi Buendia. It’s simple as that. There are literally better players than him out there. And the whole foreign players struggling in the premier league argument is so fucking stupid cause for every player that’s struggled there’s another 5 who’ve done well. Christ some of the best premier league players came from foreign leagues

  64. Pierre

    Tierney
“Odegaard had been on a constant toward and he was really good at Sociedad. Then he and ESR transformed our season.”

I think you’ll find that we were well on our way to being transformed before Odegaard arrived….a run of 5 wins and a draw from 6 games, scoring 13 and conceding 1, is confirmation of that..

  65. CG

”””””’OK I may have to rethink my Neves stand now that I know CG is in support. Fuck the stats.””””””’

    Thank you Frost,

Not a bad player this Neves. But an imaginative coach should be able too utilise AMN, Willock and Azeez from the academy for his midfield and save ALL his resources on players that ultimately make the difference:

    CENTER FORWARDS!

Only seen him once in the playoffs.Toney of Brentford. He is worth a chance.

  66. Thorough

I love Saka. He’s someone that Romford Pele will call an absolute baller. However his shooting is below average. As good as he is he would have won us more games if his finishing was better.
Partey can’t shoot to save his life even though he seems to be working on that.
Xhaka gets a screamer once in 30 games.
    Willock only scores for Newcastle.

We are the last team that should be turning our noses up at a goal scoring midfielder whose assist is also commendale.

Buendia would have fitted us like glove to the hands.
Would have made out strikers better by creating better chances.
Would have reduced creative burden on ESR.
He would have allowed Partey the chance to concentrate on shielding the defence and making us concede less.

We are fools if we don’t think Buendia was worth paying a few extra dollars for.

Arteta and Edu do not deserve their jobs, and I hope the day Tets get fired Edu isn’t spared.

  67. Ishola70

Man United’s interest in Neves is the real killer for Weagle in this one though isn’t it.

I was getting worried before Weagle that those that didn’t agree with you were heavy in numbers but there are some now that like that baller at DM like yourself to even it out slightly

  68. Dissenter

    Tapsova vs Saliba
How much better is the former

The main difference is that the latter didn’t offend the manager’s frail ego

This is just another needless solution looking for a problem to solve
This is another example of tepid leadership, someone should be telling Arteta to use the bloody tools he had at his disposal, not seeking to eff things up further.

Saliba only spent 5 months at Nice and yet he’s shortlisted for the fans team of the season
Imagine if Ode was being talked about as player of the season and yet we wanted to make his deal permanent

We need someone to keep the manager’s reality testing apparatus in check.

  69. Marko

Typical arsenal fans complain about being linked to a certain player they don’t like and watch them go quiet when he ends up at a much better club. And so it goes

  70. Sid

    Defensive
Ruben neves is better at Blocks, number of dribblers tackled
Bissouma is better at Tackles and interceptions

    Possesion
Bissouma dribble much more than Neves but his success rate is lower that would drive Diet Pep crazy.
Neves receives the ball and has more touches than Bissouma.

    Passing
Neves attempts more passes and has more progressive distance

Who is a better player depends on a managers style of football, in conclusion.

  71. Dissenter

    Wenger eagle
You know the problem with the Xhaka-is-shit crowd js their negative obsessiveness about the player means they will take a similar player, with same deficiencies and call it a victory

How come no one trusts Neves as a consistent starter anywhere.
Neves commits as many rash fouls as Xhaka because of his lack of pace.

  72. Ishola70

I think they like the Bissouma dribbling.

    Dribble, dribble, dribble.

    Not that I would complain.

At least he is another that actually competes in cenral midfield areas.

  73. WengerEagle

”Typical arsenal fans complain about being linked to a certain player they don’t like and watch them go quiet when he ends up at a much better club.”

Who is this aimed at, always with the cryptic shite aren’t you. You were beating your chest about Pepe on here all summer before we signed him, look how that turned out. Called out everyone against the Martinez to Villa sale only to go mute when he started performing really well on a weekly basis over there.

You’re in stellar company with Ishola in the Neves fan club, don’t worry.

  74. Pierre

Not sure i would call Iheanacho a success..

    £25 million
24 goals in 5 seasons (12 of those last season)…even that lazy , shot shy , good for nothing waste of space Ozil managed to score more than him …yet the oracle on Le grove thinks iheanacho is a success.

  75. WengerEagle

‘You know the problem with the Xhaka-is-shit crowd js their negative obsessiveness about the player means they will take a similar player, with same deficiencies and call it a victory’

Fuck sake Dissenter, just as we were forming a nice little alliance.

Xhaka IS shit and needs to be replaced. It just shouldn’t be with Neves.

  76. Dissenter

Bisoumq is probably the most athletic player in the league
His tackling, positioning, ground coverage and even his passing shits all over Neves
Neves takes a better free kick, I’ll give him credit for that

It doesn’t matter because we are t gonna get Bissoima. He may be too expensive for 40 million in a market for here Xhaka only fetches us 15-20 mil.
I’d go for Lokonga and let him be Partey,s prodigy

  77. Mr Serge

We are wasting time talking about neves it’s all paper talk reckon we don’t sign anyone until July
Kronkes as usual not putting their money where their mouth is so we will sell first

  78. WengerEagle

Would have thought that you of all people would understand that Iheanacho’s apps like your pet Nketiah’s is misleading due to limited minutes, guess not as I am the one saying it.

I wouldn’t call Iheanacho a success but he hasn’t been a flop either for 25m, been ok with a very good season now at 24 so might start paying them back for the investment.

So hilariously typical that you pull that one tidbit out from everything that was said though, a grown man in his Sixties playing troll. As funny as it is sad.

  79. Dissenter

Of course Xhaka need to be urgently replaced
I don’t want him to stay. He doesn’t want to stay either.

The question is whom do we replace him with?
I think we should get a younger upcoming player like Lokonga. Young, high ceiling and low wage,

  80. Peckobill

“ Xhaka IS shit and needs to be replaced. It just shouldn’t be with Neves”
In a nutshell really , puts the same strain on partey , the same hindrances

  81. Sid

Declan Rice seems more Athletic than Bissouma and Neves is a better passer statistically.

    Im telling you for free!

  82. Marko

Who is this aimed at, always with the cryptic shite aren’t you.

Arsenal fansssss. It’s a generality that gets proven time and time again. Also Neves fanclub really are you that juvenile? I think he’s a good player therefore I’m in his fanclub while I literally have mentioned Locatelli and Soumare as players I’d like signed. Why don’t you just admit that you don’t like the player and that for some reason you’re going to try to convince others they shouldn’t like him because that’s what people do around here. Again I say this happens all the time with Arsenal fans meanwhile these players end up at better clubs and we end up with the likes of Elneny and Xhaka in our midfield and argue against selling the likes of Willock and AMN. Tielemens and Neves are actually great examples cause I’m pretty sure that back in the day when they were at Porto and Anderlecht you had people arguing against them cause they’re too young and there were probably people arguing about how they were coming from a foreign league with no premier league experience…you know just the usual dumb shit Arsenal fans argue about while we struggle with shite players and don’t compete for shit.

  83. Marko

Also I’m very open minded when it comes to the midfield because I think until we get in an actual good manager in it’s pretty pointless. There’s little strategy to our targets in that area cause there’s no real style or direction in our football under this bum so why get worked up over this target or that target. Especially when Arteta will fuck it up

  84. Ishola70

Yeah Arteta is going to make this a tepid midfield anyway.

We have already heard one poster say that long passing is absolutely essential in a midfielder under Arteta.

And of course no-one is going to be the least surprised when Arteta proudly announces that he has persuaded Xhaka to stay at Arsenal yet again.

  85. Marko

Look let’s be honest here we’re in a situation that in to sort out (insert any area in the team) that we’d need to get rid of the manager. I wouldn’t trust him with a good signing or a bad one

  86. Leftside

Its a funny one cos we’ve seen what Arteta can do to our more productive players but I still would like squad improvements as we’re going to need to do well in spite of him, because it won’t be due to Arteta.

  87. WengerEagle

    Marko

Calling someone juvenile in the same post as using an ‘Arsenal fanssss’ euphemism is a good one. Are you not also an Arsenal fan btw, strange way of interacting.

Again I’m not sure who this is directed at as I too advocated for AMN to be sold and I want us to cash in on Willock’s purple scoring patch.

I’m not trying to convince anyone on Neves being average, we’re having a little something called a football debate is all. I’m not going to change someone’s opinion on him, just stating why I don’t want us to sign him. He’s 24 and has played in the league for years, he’s not some obscure kid in a foreign league captaining Porto as a teen anymore like you are making out. We all know what he is about by now so spare us this line of thought.

And as for arguing against signing talent from overseas, I’ve literally been banging the drum for that all morning in case you missed it.

  88. Positive pete

So the jist of it is some think Neves would be an upgrade on Hacker, particularly in the middle.Others think he’s almost a like for like player.slightly more mobile. That’s it.Nothing outstanding.still looking for any positives?

  89. Peckobill

    Marko
I wouldn’t trust arteta with the kids loose change to go to the ice cream van . They’d want lollies and ice cream and arteta would come back with a loaf of bread and half a dozen eggs

  90. Marko

Are you not also an Arsenal fan btw, strange way of interacting.

Yeah but I have some self awareness. Arsenal fans are often meek and idiotic and yeah I understand that

  91. Pierre

What we have seen from Bissouma at Brighton is only the tip of the iceberg..
I believe he has a lot more to his game than what he has shown so far..

He has quick feet , good pace, has good technique, plays with his head up and has a nasty side to his game.

I wanted him this time last year, now his price has doubled.
i don’t think the fans will be disappointed if we do sign him.

Partey and Bissouma would be a formidable midfield pairing in my opinion…put Willock in with them and give him the freedom to attack the box and the midfield could be dynamic.

  92. Nelson

WTF! Buendia has the same agent as Emi Martinez, and both players are close friends with their families intertwined. Now I hate Martinez.

  93. DigitalBob

Pierre – Top post. Bissouma has all the tools needed to partner Partey and revitalise this midfield.

Unfortunately the fact this deal hasn’t been done yet feels to me like he is top 4 bound. Most likely a Manchester team but maybe Liverpool.

  94. Positive pete

Pierre,.The worry there is that it seems to have gone v.quite on the Bissouma link.Though that could be a good thing behind the scenes.Depending which way you spin it.

  95. Elmo

The differences in perspective are interesting: to us fans, the Kroenkes aren’t stepping up financially to re-float a sinking club (completely aside from the angle of them having no idea at a managerial level how to oversee the club); meanwhile, over on the largest private ranch in the USA, the Kroenkes’ view will be that in the last few years they’ve extended financial largesse in Arsenal’s favour on a scale that they never thought foreseeable (£184m to restructure our stadium debt, though as a loan to Arsenal; £120m in repaying the club’s BoE Covid loan in May, though again, likely it will later emerge as a loan to the club by KSE).

What’s worrying is that we’re kind of at the point of being unsellable. The Kroenkes are now so deep in at Arsenal (probably 1.25 billions once you include share purchases and indefinite term owner loans), that unless we somehow achieved a miraculous Liverpool-style rebound where we win the PL and CL and the enterprise value goes sky-rocketing, or we weasel our way into a closed shop ESL cartel, then no potential new owner is going to be willing to both buy a heavily loss-making club from Kroenke at a price he’d be willing to sell, and fund the couple of hundred million plus needed for a rebuild. You’d pass and go for a cheaper club with a good stadium that you can build City-style, or just not bother at all and commission a new $200m super-yacht.

  96. Almuniasaynomore

Don’t know what you’re so angry about lads. I spent 20 minutes yesterday morning destroying a perfectly good song for a player who by the end of the day was signing for Villa. That’s about 19 minutes more work than our management have put into the transfer window. I won’t make that mistake again. This time I’ll try and catch the mood on Le Grove, well for some of us anyway.

    Agadoo by Black Lace
Artetedu du du what the fuck is going on?
Artetedu du du are we signing anyone?
For the left or the right anyone at all will do
Artetedu du du do you have a fucking clue?

Artetedu du du you’re going to get the sack
Artetedu du du now Pierre wants Ozil back
Emery left, that was right but then we got you two
Arsenal fans in pain, what will you fuckers do?

  97. S Asoa

Arsenal had offered 35 million in the 2nd bid for Buendia. But that player is going to Aston Vila for 33 million
Ruben Neves who was touted as Arteta top target preferred to go to Leicester.
We are not competing with the likes of Vila and the Foxes or Everton. Arteta’s irascible treatment of players, his vindictiveness has brought our stock down.
It could be argued that AFC is bigger than most, has bigger revenues, which anyway do not matter since we have much bigger expenditures.
How long will the few dodos dig their head into the litter pile and see no evil ?
A single expenditure of 5 million severance pay should do a lot to Arsenal.
And then we have the Kroenkes. But enough heartburn for a dat.

  98. englandsbest

‘Arsenal Outbid By Villa ‘ is typical of the sports media. They have this long-running story that Buendia was the main Arsenal target – was he? – and rather than admit they were wrong, they come up with an explanation that gets them off the hook.

We should bear in mind that with transfers the football press deal in self-made rumour, make-believe and outright lies, a way of selling newspapers when there’s not much else to write about.

  99. Batistuta

    Marko

You know I’m all for foreign based absolute ballers. Been banging the De Paul drum for a while now and seems he’s off to Athletico.

I did like Buendia because he’s going to contribute not just in terms of flair but he’s got very good numbers championship or not plus he was quite good the one time he played in the league.

I’m just hoping we don’t go and spend same or even more on someone like Odegaard

  100. Tom

I’m not bothered by Arsenal’s failure to sign Buendia too much but it is discouraging to see him pick Villa over Arsenal if I’m honest.
Apparently Arsenal bid 30m and Villa topped our bid with a 33m of their own to seal the deal.

It reminds me of the Alexis Sanchez transfer from Barca, where Wenger was the difference between Alexis coming to Arsenal or going to Liverpool even though Pool bid 3m more for him.

Some Arsenal fans can burry their heads in sand pretending Arsenal are an attractive destination and still a major draw under Arteta, but on the evidence available thus far players have decided to come to play under him only after offered much better financial packages than the competition
    (Partey, Willian).

Norwich would probably still have sold Buendia to Arsenal for around 30m if the player had put his foot down and said Arsenal was where he wanted to go or else , but clearly he didn’t fancy that option much did he.
Maybe someone should’ve shown him the since the Christmas table.

  101. Mr Serge

Fuck buendia he has shown his ambition by going to villa a team that finished below us even though we had our worst season in 35 years

  102. S Asoa

Newcastle are keen on taking Saliba on a loan. Arteta has his “ problem Saliba” solved. Fortunately Saliba will be illegible to play against Arsenal. So no rubbing of too much salt into an open wound there.
    #foArteta

  103. Positive pete

England’s best. It’s what I’ve been saying all along. Was he ( Buendia) the main target at this stage? Or just a limited half hearted punt? It would appear the meejah had it wrong & it’s been Neves as the current main target.

  104. Terraloon

WE the £350-£400 million would be the equivalent sum Arsenal would be spending pa in wage terms whereas it’s what £220 ish million
Again in transfer terms if I take your £500 million spent by Arsenal the £260 m spent by Leicester Pro rata is higher as a% of turnover.
Yes they have made good money from transfers out but they are spending far far more in wage and transfer fees paid than they do from all income streams

  105. S Asoa

    Tom
👍🏽 We should take our “ since Christmas table “ while negotiating to sign players.
Edu deserves to be fired for hiding this USP

  106. Pierre

One ofthe reasons I’m not overly bothered if we don’t sign Odegaard or Beundia , is that it will force Arteta’s hand and he will have to include Willock in the premier league squad for next season.

With either Smith Rowe or Willock as CAM it may be case of horses for courses on who he selects for the role.

Of course they are completely different players , Smith Rowe would play just off the striker , whilst Willock will arrive from deeper positions but both can be effective and both would be happy to drop in and out of the side as needs be…

Willock is also more than capable of playing a more disciplined role in centre midfield if required.
He has all the attributes physically, just needs to focus more on the defensive side of his game and he will be an asset to the team

  107. Jamie

    Current Arsenal Squad:

    Keepers: Leno Runarsson Ryan

Defenders: Bellerin Tierney Gab Holding Cedric Chambers Mari

    (Loan: Saliba Mav Kolasinac)

    Midfielders: Xhaka Partey Elneny

    (Loan: Guendouzi Torreira AMN Willock)

Forwards: Saka ESR Pepe Willian Nelson Martinelli

    Strikers: Laca Auba Eddie Balo

30 first-teamers on the books. Anyone upset about a lack of signings is underestimating the hot mess we’re in.

We’re out of Europe and playing a game a week next season. We need to move out half the squad. Until that happens, no sense in having any expectations of progress.

  108. Sly

    Great post @ Valentin 11:37
I was always of the impression that we needed a deep lying CM in the ilk of cesc/ cazorla to partner with partey and provide a deeper layer to creativity
Folks are talking about having a second DM alongside partey and relying on a 10, wingers and FBs to create
I would still love to see the creativity from a CM also
Any ideas on players in this category
We’ve been relying on partey to make ‘creative’ runs from deep which is not his game and haven’t been beneficial
If we can get a creative CM with good ball retentive skills, LB, RB, GK and let ESR play 10 this will be a good window
    What are the chances

How are you doing? Get the sense you’ve got the aul priorities sorted, family before football, good man. Especially now with Arsenal breaking the hearts of those who love the club, spending time on the golf course with the young lad is very wise. Liked that clip you put up,very funny, all the best humour contains truth doesn’t it? My young lad is a bit young still so I’m entertaining myself by coming on here and trying to write worse lyrics than Kroenkephobe, very little in it! If it’s a choice of laughing or crying I’ll take the former but with Arsenal it’s not always possible. One of the tricks in life is to surround yourself with people who can look on the funny side,he’s a great one for that.Anyway, nice to see you writing again,I’ve told you before but you guys who write while I sleep are amongst my favourite posters,it’s almost like the distance allows you to see more clearly. Mind yourself.

Seems we are having trouble offloading Eddie

Tabloid talk is that we are offering him to Leeds for £20 million
That’s crazy because they had him on loan and weren’t playing him so why would they spend £20 mil on him in a market filled with cheaper and more rounded prospects?

We have a booted squad of pretty poor players, with 4-5 exceptions.

Then you’re in for a really rough summer of pure frustration

Like Jamie says, our biggest issue will be clearing the decks

Let’s see how things play out first

Pre-season training doesn’t start for 5 weeks, the PL doesn’t start for 9 weeks

The Euro’s kick off on Friday night, which will hopefully distract the rumour merchants from silly season

It does not matter how excited Gooners get over new signings, Arteta is still the manager.
