TRANSFER ROUND-UP: KEEPERS ON THE AGENDA

by .

WELL GOOD MORNING! If a sign of growing old is damaging yourself doing stupid things, I fear that age is coming at me fast. I damaged my finger breaking off a piece of late night chocolate. The guilt of being a gluttonous pig was enough already, now every time I look at my thumb I’m reminded of my food crimes with a bloodied nail. Life is unfair.

ONTO FOOTBALL.

Arsenal are tracking the Ajax keeper. Inject that rumour right into my_____

What?

Oh, he’s on a doping charge that probably won’t get lifted? Ok. Cool. Well, uhhmmmm… maybe not that joke.

He’s a good keeper from what I’ve seen and I would be happy to have him as a back-up if he wasn’t banned for 3 years. The Cameroon international fits the profile, good with his feet, 25 years old, 6ft3, one year left on his deal.

Mark Irwin, who is pretty good on transfer talk reckons Mat Ryan will be signed on a perm deal this summer but is viewed only as a backup keeper. The young players seem to love him behind the scenes and he’s certainly more than capable of playing that role for us. Apparently, our interest in David Raya has cooled because Brentford has been promoted. For me, interest in him should have been cooled because the guy recommending him has a terrible rep and he also put Runarsson on our wage bill this summer.

AFCON players seem to be the hot ticket at the moment, I’m a bit worried if we do all our business with players that will exit the club for 5 weeks, we might have a problem… you would hope that is being considered.

CARLO ANCELOTTI is rumoured to be on his way back to Real Madrid. Honestly, the management nostalgia going on in Europe this year is just TOO much for me to handle. It’s a very weird decision, but it would seem the comfort of a nice guy in the dugout is tempting for an owner that is a little all over the place. Everton now the feeder club for El Classico managers? And you want to tell me they have a better league? Bitch please…

There were some leaked documents on Spanish FT over the weekend showing the signatures of major clubs in the super league. Tim Lewis signed our document and the law firm on all the docs? Clifford Chance. Just goes to show you, when it comes to business, it doesn’t matter how hard you support a team, it’s all about the pound notes. He’s spent 6 minutes with Edu and he’s already ‘contacts lawyering.’

Also, the signature. So small? IS THAT AN INDICATION THAT AT THE TIME OF SIGNING HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING WAS WRONG? I have no idea, but my cousin is actually a handwriting analyst in Australia at an elite level. Going tap her to waste some time on what we can learn here.

The England squad is getting released later on today. There are rumours that Bukayo Saka is going to be included. I mean, honestly, why wouldn’t you take a player who can drop at least 3 positions to a high standard? Part of me was hoping he’d be left out so he could rest this summer, part of me wants him to avenge the memory of Theo Walcott going to the World Cup. Good luck to him, he deserves it.

We’ll finish this post out with some Kieran Tierney propaganda.

“I listen to everything the manager tells me, word for word.

“I love working with him, he’s helped me massively.

“If you can see the differences in my game in the last 18 months or so it’s because of Mikel Arteta and what his coaching staff have been telling me to do.

“I’ve been working on their advice every day. I’m really grateful for what the gaffer’s done for me.”

“I had a meeting with the Arsenal manager and he just told me, ‘Go and express yourself with Scotland, enjoy yourself, bring energy to the team, bring energy to the camp’.

“He’s always so supportive of me, and tremendously positive. The manager always brings the best out of me.

“With regards Scotland for the Euros he also said, ‘Give everything you have, that’s how you get the best out of yourself, and it will help the team the most’.”

You can call Arteta many things, but a bad coach ain’t one of them.

A short post today, we’ll be back with MORE news tomorrow because that is what we do on the Le-Grove.co.uk.

Is Onana’s ban not just 1 year Pedro?

Good to go from February even if the appeal fails, no?

Leedsgunner

We need a young LB. Josh Doig and Lee Buchanan are both first team tested (SPL and the Championship I would suggest are a similar level) young and hungry to prove themselves at a higher level. I reckon both players could be bought for a combined fee of £10m if we wanted. It’s not only about spending a lot of money, it’s about spending money smarter. We need to buy young players on the up, not old players on the way down… that’s why for me I’m pleased we are no longer connected with Bertrand. If we aren’t buying a… Read more »

Leedsgunner

Onana ban is only 12 months…

Tom

“I had a meeting with the Arsenal manager and he just told me, ‘Go and express yourself with Scotland, enjoy yourself, bring energy to the team, bring energy to the camp’.

The most rigid and conservative coach around telling Tierney to go and express himself while playing under another is worthy of the face palm emoji.

Shades of Guardiola telling the Southampton fullback how he should’ve played during handshakes after the game.

grooveydaddy

WE

I just read that his lawyers are hoping to get his ban reduced to 8 months rather than fully overturned, meaning he couldn’t play for us until October?? if we sign.him.

Doesn’t make a lot of sense….

Leedsgunner

I want Daniel Ballard to be given a chance in the first team.

He was extremely impressive for Blackpool whilst on loan. I would love to see him nurtured and become a squad player for us this coming season… if he continues to progress in the way he has been, he could save us millions.

Leedsgunner

Mahrez and Sterling? Would you sign them? EPL proven and still a few years of 30… or is this short term thinking?

Leedsgunner

I tell a lie. Mahrez is 30. Sterling is 26. Sterling as an Odegaard alternative appeal to anyone?

Pedro

Leeds, I just don’t see how we get Sterling for under £60m?

26 is prime age. He’s world class. He’s a winner. That’d be a massive signing.

Davey

Avoid the Ajax GK – a clown although good with his feet ironically

Nelson

Looks like Ancelotti will be Real’s new coach. I wonder what he thinks about Ødegaard.

Ishola70

Davey

I always thought Onana to be a little eccentric shall we say.

Mind you Jens was the same but he had the real presence to go along with it.

Leno for his faults was one of the best shot stoppers in the league so Onana has to show more than shot stopping in his game to move the needle in respect of the Arsenal goalkeeper position.

And this looks like Leno leaving us rather than the club dumping him.

Left Testicle

Sterling? An over paid player who misses sitters for fun?

We already have one of those. No, thank you.

Kroenkephobe

Pedro Hand writing analysis hmm? Far from an exact science although Rich might disagree. 😜 Let’s just assume Mr Lewis is a handsomely paid lickspittle ’til it’s proven otherwise. He’s done very little to light up the world of football administration thus far. He makes Sir Chips look like a hyperactive octopus. Leeds I’ve not seen Buchanan but have seen Doig twice. First time impressive, second time pish as they say in Scotland. He certainly looked the part physically but made some howlers in the Scottish Cup Final. Shame we no longer have a well connected scouting network. The Onana… Read more »

I have an aunt who reads tea leaves.

Pedro

Carlo on Odegaard.

“When Florentino buys a Norwegian footballer, you simply have to accept it. He could be the best player in the world, but I don’t care because he was not a player who I asked for. That signing was to do with PR.”

Pedro

Kroenkephobe, she catches a lot of fraudsters.

Tom

Pedro, I’m not disputing whether Tierney liked it or not, I’m sure he did.
I’m merely pointing out the juxtaposition of how Arteta coaches the players – the strict, almost robotic movements under constant instructions, and his recommendations how Tierney should approach his Scotland duties.

What spin?

WengerEagle

That quote is from 6 years ago to be fair Pedro.

All it proves is that he is not a player that Ancelotti specifically asked for. And why would he? 16 years old, that is what scouts are for.

Sid

Sterling is overrated

andy1886

Sterling World Class? Really? Come on, even Pep wouldn’t claim that. Watch him at the Euros and then come back and tell me he’s World Class. Has spells where he’s good but at the top level he can’t do it. Very very average in the last World Cup. You can safely assume that it’s a ‘No’ from me for both him and Mahrez.

Pedro

Tom, I think it’s only the internet that thinks Arteta teaches players like robots. Not sure that’s how the players see it.

WengerEagle

Sterling is top drawer but he is in that weird spot of not quite being world class (top 5 in world) but better than pretty much anything below it.

He struggles against defenders that can match him for speed and outmuscle him like Reece James and Wan Bissaka.

Also doesn’t strike the ball well enough for a wannabe elite player.

Having said that, he is still massively underrated on here. Talked about like a Walcott clone when he has been one of Pep’s go to men in recent years.

Left Testicle

And he runs like a girl.

WengerEagle

*top 5 LW in world

andy1886

Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone who actually knows a bit about football on the board rather then the usual businessmen, lawyers, marketing people and accountants? In fact anyone but former footballers or managers seems to be the order of the day.

andy1886

WEagle, yet Pep it seems doesn’t want him any more? And we don’t need to collect any more forwards unless we’re getting rid of someone.

Tom

A hard no to the 30 year old Mahrez ( crazy idea), open to a Sterling deal.
The notion Arsenal are in position to turn their noses on his type of quality is weird.
Financial aspects might be unworkable though.

WengerEagle

Andy

He started in the CL Final a few days ago, there’s nothing concrete to Pep not fancying him anymore.

And even if he was sold, absolutely zero chance that he would want to come to us.

Another comment robbed by a naughty word, no idea which. Weagle Yea their haul was immense, but the allure of the journey wasn’t nearly the same as mega sides of the past. Think that’s what’s missing for me, just not giving the vibes of previous Clasico teams. Football is all about that after all, it’s what builds the desire in guys across the world. Clubs like City and PSG will nibble at that monopoly, but they’ve miles to go to touch their prestige. Really feel La Liga needs an overhaul, too easy in Spain to rip a good team to… Read more »

Pedro, are you suggesting Arteta’s constant barking from sidelines is a deep fake?

Kroenkephobe

Pedro
Ah! Fair dos. I misunderstood – I took it to be one of those psychological handwriting analysis roles, the kind of which were popular in France in the 80s and 90s.

You’d write a sample paper and they claimed accurately to predict your worth to a company. That sort of guff.

Tom

“Another comment robbed by a naughty word, no idea which.“

Tom

Champagne Charlie

Mahrez isn’t an option given his age, but Sterling would be a real high quality addition. Only issue is I don’t think he’s the profile of player we need in a side containing Auba, Pepe, Laca, Martinelli who are all end product players for the most part. Sterling is exactly that ilk, and we’ve a real lack of guile and invention from our attack which he’d do little/nothing to solve. If the situation was reversed and Mahrez was 26 then it would be a massive yes. That being said, Sterling receives far too little appreciation for what he offers –… Read more »

Charlie Yeah the Bundesliga is a joke given their second best team at the peak of their powers in Dortmund were a feeder club for Bayern. They would have probably tried to snag Reus too if he wasn’t a crock. It will always take a superhuman effort and a genius like a Klopp to come along to break up the Bayern monopoly even if only for a season with the advantages that they enjoy over everyone else. They’re run too well and efficiently to in the near future go down the path of Barca or Real and erode their advantages… Read more »

Champagne Charlie

Excuse me..

Auba has 54

WengerEagle

Agree on Sterling too Charlie on both accounts of him being massively underappreciated for what he does but at the same time not quite what we need for the massive money that he would cost on a planet that he would want to leave guaranteed trophies for us.

Sancho imo is already a better player than him and will continue to improve over the next 3 years.

Same goes for Foden.

Ray+in+LA

I believe it’s called the manager carousel

So…

Ancelotti to Real Madrid

Arteta to Everton

Zidane to Arsenal ?

Champagne Charlie

Weagle

It’s not nice to see as a neutral, Bayern became better nicking Dortmund’s jewels time and again. Now they’re aiming to get better nicking Leipzig’s best defender…..and manager 🥴

Imagine Man City won the league and then went and added VVD, Salah, and Klopp for relative modesty lmao what a load of bollocks that would be in terms of optics.

WengerEagle

Would be funny to see the Scouse mafia bitch and cry over their darling Trent being excluded from the England Euro squad.

No way Southgate takes 4 RBs surely in a 26 man squad?

Gbat

What’s this with the goalkeeping coach having a bad rep?
How many goalkeeping coaches is it now that Pedro has disliked?

Champagne Charlie

I’d much rather we aim at Sancho than Sterling if we’re venturing north of 50/60 mil. Only way Sterling becomes an option is if we’re getting mates rates because his options are so limited for an exit. Can kind of see that ringing true, because he’s not going to Liverpool or United, Chelsea are well stocked for his type, and then you’ve got him going abroad which doesn’t strike me as likely. He’s a London lad, maybe after winning the trophies he’s keen to be a leader for a side aiming to reestablish itself? Idk, but wouldn’t touch him for… Read more »

andy1886

WEagle, he did start but like the most City players didn’t do much.

Spunk, bollocks, twat, motherfucker, arsehole, bat flaps. Any more for any more?

Gbat, the keeper coach is the one who recommended Runarsson which is a sackable offence in itself. Leno doesn’t get on with him and he woudl have been part of the conversation when we let Emi go.

andy1886

That should do it.

Rich

We shouldn’t be going anywhere near Sterling We want hungry players on the way up, not players who are showing signs of regression, and who already have a full bank balance + trophy cabinet It’s one thing scoring goals when you’re surrounded by City level technicians, it’s another when you’re surrounded by Elneny, Xhaka, Guendouzi, Torreira level midfielders Sterling isn’t a particularly good finisher, he’s a Poundland Aubameyang, and all you get with big names, I’d big fees, big wages, no resale value, and big ego’s Pep is an astute decision maker, and knows when to let a player go,… Read more »

Sorry but Sterling is massively overrated. Even at city he’s only had 1 real mega season, the rest of the time he’s been good but def not world class. Not clinical enough in front of goal and more often than not makes the wrong final choice and is very guilty of overplaying it. For 30 million, then maybe. But no I’d rather keep Saka than buy Sterling

WengerEagle

Saka in, nice one.

TAA picked too, 4 RBs is nuts really with only 2 recognised strikers.

Harsh on Watkins missing out, had a better season than DCL for me.

Pierre

A couple of years ago , during Sterling’s stand out scoring season, i likened him to Martin Hayes , not in his quality but in the way he scored his goals from all kind of mis hits ( and yes i know Hayes scored quite a few pens) , and I questioned whether he could continue to score at that rate as the luck may run out. I also made the same comparison with Martinelli when he scored at an incredible rate at the start of his Arsenal career, and was slaughtered for it, although it is proving correct when… Read more »

Here’s something probably very flawed but curiously interesting… If you compare the season-long average points per game for a home side and their opponents it gives you a retroactive assessment of how likely that result was For example, for Arsenal our home ppg was 1.47 and our away ppg was 1.74 so when we were away to Fulham our ppg difference was + 0.8 [1.74 vs 0.95] — a win and when we were home to Man City our ppg difference was – 0.9 [1.47 vs 2.37] — a loss When you review the season and place limits on a… Read more »

Tom

Rich I don’t think anyone is advocating adding Sterling without a possibility of key players moving on, I know I wouldn’t. Any number of possible incoming players would need to be looked in the context of Arteta’s vision for the immediate future before one could render their approval or disapproval. Much the same like with the Odegaard/Buendia debate. Two completely different players, so if it’s one or the other, then what’s the direction the club is taking? One of the reasons I wouldn’t trust Arteta making decisions with long term consequences is because I don’t think his position is secured… Read more »

Arsenal do some really strange things

The more ridiculous the Arsenal rumour, the more inclined I am to give it credence

I think we’ll spend this summer, providing we can clear the decks

Spunking £10-£15 million p/a, and a £50-£70 million fee on Sterling, should be the last thing on our minds

And that’s why you can almost guaranteed it’s going to happen

Sean M

Onana looks like a decent goalie, very good distro.

Wish we got a GK in the mould of Emi, Mendy at Chelsea. Very commanding.

Not a big fan of the Runarsson, Ryan build of GKs

Guys you can vote for Saka as young player of the season here, literally takes a second

Nelson

The England NT has 3 GK, 10 defenders, 5 midfielders and 8 forwards.

I suspect TAA will spend more time in midfield and in the wing than defense.

Saka will play left wing back when calls upon.

WengerEagle

I mean, it is one of Foden or Mount by a mile if we’re being honest.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Saka won it though considering how our lot usually hack these online votes, lol.

Spanishdave

Apparently Arteta spent a lot of time with Sterling a few years ago and he scored more goals.
Maybe he wants to get together with Arteta again .
He’s on big bucks though so probably not on

Rich

WE

Saka has carried us at times this season, my favourite player since Cazorla

Rich

Southgate on Saka’s inclusion

“He is the role model for his generation. His talent is without doubt one of the best I’ve seen in my career. He was a certain pick from the start not just because of his versatility but his talent. Mason scores goals but we needed more on the table”

Tom

“Pedro How do you injure yourself on a piece of chocolate? You’re like a walking, talking advert for never turning into a soyboy, and eating plenty of red meat”

Nothing to do with diet, Rich.
It’s a well known fact that over exposure to air pollution caused by excessive coal burning—Pedro’s preferred source of energy to power his propaganda machine —can lead to osteoporosis and brittle fingernails.

Eduardo

Signing a banned goalie would be the most Arsenal thing since signing broke backed Kim Kallstrom

Tom

WE
The young player of the season is kinda open to interpretation a bit.
No doubt Foden is a more complete and accomplished player, Mount too probably, but Saka is 19 vs 22 and 22 respectively.

Tom

21 and 22

KT is a legend no matter which side of the fenceyoure on

Buying Sterling would be the most ridiculous waste of funds and it makes my blood boil to think there are probably people at the club even contemplating it. Once again in typical Wenger fashion of old (need a CB? buy an attacking midfielder to solve the problem) we are fixing a problem that doesn’t need fixing. We are well stocked in wide attacking players – players whose stock is continuing to rise whereas Sterling at 26 is probably wysiwyg. We need a transfer strategy overall – who makes decisions – checks and balances – and a ban on players over… Read more »

Yes the usual suspects are pining for an individualistic player with a big name from a big club while our midfield remains a dump heap.

It’s called trying to cut corners.

And of course it’s from the Wenger handbook, the second period Wenger handbook anyway.

We must forgive them though.

They are steeped in Arsene.

Champagne Charlie

Was a bit hopeful Saka wouldn’t make the cut in order to let the lad have a breather and feel invigorated ahead of the new season.

There’s lots riding on him and ESR at Arsenal, too much for my liking, and Saka needs his recovery well managed after a season of landing the most minutes at the club.

But will be a great experience for him, and he’ll grow as a player for it. Just hope star boy doesn’t start the next campaign weary legged.

Champagne Charlie
