REVVING UP POSITIVE VIBES ABOUT THE FUTURE (ONE LAST TIME)

by .

There are two ways we can behave over the next 6 months.

1.Entrenched in our views on where the football club is going and MISERABLE.

2.Positive about some of the basics that are in place and trust the plan for the summer is more January than last summer.

Too many Arsenal fans are taking direction one and it was embarrassing reading yesterday.

‘We’re gonna get spanked by 6’

If you spent the entire pre-game chat talking about how we were going to get spanked by miracle-man-Tuchel, you have absolutely no right to be bitching post-game about the performance and WIN.

Chelsea is the form team in Europe right now. That is proved out with form, that is proved out by big big results, that is proved out by the fact they are in the FA Cup final and the Champions League final. They even beat Manchester City at the weekend.

For large swathes of this season, we’ve been bad. But one real positive is we’re usually pretty decent at the planning part for games against top teams.

Yesterday, Arteta delivered a tactical masterclass and beat Chelsea the only way this squad is capable of doing so… pure shit-housery.

Was it pretty? No.

Was it effective? Absolutely.

We scored a goal because we pressured Chelsea at the back. It was a fluke, but you can’t deny goals from errors we forced aren’t part of the deal.

Then we clung on for dear life and defended like our lives depended on it despite there being nothing on the game for us that anyone cares about (get fucked with the Europa Conference).

It was a long way from protagonist football, but we have to be honest with ourselves, we are where we are in the table, and that’s because we lack the quality to go away to Chelsea for a game of tika-taka.

Arsenal hasn’t won at Stamford Bridge for a decade. That’s a big result. You take whatever you can get.

What you can’t do is sit there and whine about beating big teams in big games. It’s truly embarrassing stuff to see. Who do these fans think they are?

This season hasn’t been great, but thinking yourself above big wins isn’t on I’m afraid.

Let’s also rev up some red meat for the WE HAVEN’T IMPROVED crew.

That’s the table since Christmas day. Important if you are looking for signs that we can finish higher than 8th next season. 22 games of form indicate that we are tracking in the right direction, even if there have been some grim moments.

Third best defence in the league all season. Defensively, we’re much better. We’d be even better if we cut out the massive dumb errors. That will come as we upgrade players.

Attacking wise, we’ve been absolutely awful all season. What can we bank on here? Well, this summer, there will be upgrades all over the place. We won’t have a central midfield this bad next season. We’ll likely add someone who can deliver NOW numbers in attack. The young players are already chalking up more decisive moments and they will get better and better. Auba won’t give us a 10 goal season next year (hopefully). We’ll bin players that have been badly broken by the Arsenal machine over the last decade, mental baggage is a thing and there’s a group of seniors that need to go.

Also look at where we can make up the 9 points for the top 4 next season, because yes, there are only 9 points in it. Zero points against Wolves. Zero points against Aston Villa. Zero points against Everton. One point against Burnley. One point against Palace. Get a better midfield, start the season with creators, and move the fine margins our way and we start taking deep block teams down.

Our job next season is top 4. Since Christmas, we’ve only been outclassed by Liverpool and City. I’m not sure we’re a million miles away from anyone in the chasing pack.

Arteta needs to pick things up. He’s extremely sensitive in the media at the moment and he’s struggling with the pressure. He needs to step up and address the issues he’s helping to make worse. Did you see the Athletic ran with my keeper coach issues and Bernd Leno looking to leave? Move on that issue. The keepers have been dreadful this season. Everyone at the club knows the reasons and it makes Arteta look like a jobs for the boys manager. There needs to more self-reflection from Arteta. He’s not a rockstar, he can’t do it all by himself, and he really needs to build more know-how around him this summer. Vinai cannot allow Arteta to entrench power, he needs to clip his wings and get him back to basics.

Arsenal also needs to think about what the fuck they are doing with football leadership. Edu’s contacts game looks like it’s getting a seeing to. The scouts are being found via a headhunter service, which is excellent news, and stops him stocking the club with his mates. His disaster physio, Brazilian Bruno Mazziotti, looks like he might see the exit door despite Edu being a protector of him. The Athletic reckons Willian, Xhaka, and Bellerin will be exited. I told you months ago that was why Hector has been benched. This is all good news, the Willian stories are almost too good to be true. Again, a mate of Edu, a super agent deal from hell, one of many that should be sounding a huge fucking siren heading into another summer of big investment.

There’s clearly a deep affection between Arteta and the kids, roll with that. Old players being unhappy is telling and obvious. They don’t want to be part of a long-term rebuild at a late stage of their careers. That isn’t a jab at Arteta, it’s a BIG FAT TRUTH about Arsenal. We need to build back smart. Young kids like being coached with future proof methods. They’re getting big chances at a big club. Build on that. Grow a squad for the Champions League… and make sure that when that top 4 position lands, we have a team of 25-year-olds ready to explode. Don’t keep on accepting your captain trudging off like a brat, it’s not good for anyone.

This is a post that is glass half full, and I honestly do not care what anyone thinks about that because I cannot live in football misery for the next 6 months. If we put together a full season of how we’ve played since Christmas, we’ll be in the mix for top 4 come the end of the season. That’s what the plan is, that’s what the club is working towards, I am confident there cannot possibly be a start to the season as bad as the last.

What do YOU think?

See you in the comments.

We’re better without the ball.is all to do with Wenger no longer being at the club rather than for any other reason.

As for game control, we’re losing games which is down to the current manager.

Rich

Almunia I don’t think Arteta’s pragmatism is through choice, he’s just playing the hand he was dealt, our squad really isn’t up to much, take a couple of players out, and what left is beyond bland He hasn’t helped himself with some really unexplainable decisions either, like Willian, Runarsson, Soares, Luiz new deal, Aubameyang mega deal, which should really be mistakes that should see heads roll Last season was our first win against a traditional top 6 team since 2016, we don’t currently have a team to go away from home and go toe to toe with the better teams… Read more »

Why would Grealish join Arsenal? Even if we could afford him we can’t even offer EL football let alone the CL he’d be looking for and right now CL football won’t be on the cards for a minimum of 2 – 3 seasons.

Why do people play Football Manager on here when they can just go and play Football Manager?

Rich

Marc

Where else is he going?

Sancho to United
City have just renewed De Bruyne and have Foden
Liverpool are skint, and would need a big departure
Chelsea have Havertz + Mount

We’re one of the few clubs that can afford to sign him and pay him £10 million p/a

Apparently he has a release clause, if we can clear a few out, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it happen

Marc

Rich Liverpool are skint? They aren’t about to show combined losses of over £250 million over 5 seasons. You seem to think we’re a big club right now we’re not we pay big money for no results and our trajectory is downward. You move the goal posts on why he won’t go anywhere else and then why we can afford him. If he has a release clause why won’t the Liverpool owners pay up? ManU would find the money, City chuck money about for giggles and the Spud’s could be rolling in the cash from selling Kane. The same people… Read more »

“We’re better without the ball.is all to do with Wenger no longer being at the club rather than for any other reason.”

And despite being “better without the ball” apparently, we have conceded over a goal a game since Wenger’s departure, compared 0.95 goals conceded per game during his 20 years at the club..

But yes , we must be better without the ball because all of the media, pundits and know nothings say so.

Pierre

I’m not sure grealish would last long playing under Arteta before the famous non-negotiables are breached….

Grealish being a maverick on the pitch would find it very difficult to play within such a rigid system at Arsenal ..even Willian is struggling within the system which tells you something.

https://youtu.be/rKerbHX1sj4 I would rather have this if Odegaard is not staying. 15 mil last summer and we could have had him, and our season would look different. Selling Niles and buying him should have been the plan. Now Buendia will cost at least 30 mil. Two footed, has an eye for a pass and he is still 24. And he can play at the premier league level. I would get him. If not Matheus Pereira has impressed me too. He is also proven in the premier league. And he is devastating too. And he is in a relegated team which… Read more »

To me, the Chelsea game says nothing. It wasn’t some tactical masterclass or, as The Athletic would have it, some great display of siege mentality. It was 100% pure luck. On the flip side, we’ve had some games this season where we thoroughly deserved to win but didn’t. So, karma. The issue remains that this is a team without identity playing a ridiculously slow and uninspired brand of football. So while I don’t want to wallow in misery for the next six months, I don’t see how anything will change as long as we’ve led by the same group of… Read more »

Have we really improved against the top teams?

City – lost both ties
Liverpool – lost both ties
Spurs – won one, drew one
Utd – won one, lost one
Chelsea – won both ties
Leicester – lost both ties

Total- 12 played
Won- 4
Drew – 1
Lost – 7

The way people have been going on, it felt like we won a lot more. The only positive is the spanking has decreased, but then again we are playing slow, crab like football every game.

Pep and klopp must love arteta, guaranteed 6 points every season against arsenal.

Gonsterous

Compare that to Wenger who was known to be terrible against the top teams and it’s identical.

Wenger used to regularly beat pool, city, spurs and leicester. His boogie team was chelsea, and utd.

Only a few are likely to make it – Patino and Monlouis I have followed for quite a while. Omari Hutchinson looks very interesting – his name has been popping up on match reports and it seems there is quite a bot of Saka in him – he plays wide but has also filled in at LB!

Great Post Pedro. Beating Chelsea away is a terrific result. I think Arteta is under huge pressure. Selling players is a precarious business if they are on huge money as we’ve found before. So to my mind the future is uncertain. I dont see the club bringing in too many. They don’t have the money and why invest shedloads when you might sack the manager before Xmas. I’m enjoying seeing the young players develop.

Yeah agreed on this.

If he hasn’t looked a naural offensively on the edge of the opposition penalty area he also hasn’t looked that great defensively as the last man.

this is reality, pragmatism and sustainability, rather than negativity some may label

Partey is a poor CM, he should make DM his role. At AM, Saul was the CM.
We need a CM of the quality of Santi, Diaby, Rosiky(later years), Viera, Essien, KDB is now used as a CM by Guardiola.

If we look at artetas last few windows it doesn’t fill me with confidence. He’s had the chance to sell Lacazette, Xhaka, Bellerin, AMN fir a rough reported total of 100m. My worst nightmare is this

Bertrand on a free
Moussa Dembele
Odegaard (using up most of the budget or on some massive 5 year structured deal ala Pepe)
Cebalos permanent
Xhaka new deal
Elneny new deal
Laca new deal

DigitalBob

Danny – Your worst nightmare is far too realistic for me! Its a scary thought!

I’d also add a new deal for David Luiz to that nightmare scenario. Arteta will justify it by saying Luiz is more of a player/coach/mentor but will still play in 15+ games next season.

Also while we would all love Hakimi and Grealish these are not realistic transfers for us. As Marc said if you want to play Football Manager just play Football Manager.

Danny S

Digital Bob

I would very much doubt we will attract top targets currently, and if we did they would join fir one reason only and that’s we’d be paying more cash than anyone else.

Very good structured post which s precisely where we are as a club.
Edu is clueless and like Arteta has no experience, so being a ex footballer at the club means nothing.
So who is going to change it ? Josh!
That’s the problem the club is just bumbling along.
Pedro just constantly tries to spin things which is getting tiresome

Exactly Danny, I’d hope the fact we are using the headhunting company to find us some elite scouts are in a view to unearth those type of players, the only question is can that all realistically be done in the next few months?

The future lies with the young and vigorous – yet one-year extensions to Laca and Luiz would be wiser than letting either go for free. Laca is a natural goal scorer, useful tactically, Luiz is an inspirational figure.

The Kroenke’s are horribly letting our club rot . This is on them , I dont blame Arteta anymore , he is only doing what he is capable of . And some of their best EPL form of the season was when they were still in the Europa League before that tournament reached two legged knock out ties.

Leicester may be seen as a good side but not necessarily having a really strong overall squad.

But the arteta supporters want to have their cake and eat it too.

According to arteta fans, the players are not good enough but then again they show us a table where arsenal are 3rd.

Which is it? Players bad or Arteta underperforming?

Englands “””””””””It’s a process that takes time. There’s no magic wand.”””””””””””””””” Virtually the exact words Spurs dopey looking young manager Mason came out at the weekend after they got beat at Leeds. ( even they are copying us this with this ‘process rubbish’) There is no process, no project. Its simply a case of managing , improving and motivating your players at your disposal and upgrading quietly and efficiently as you go along. Neil Warnock recently stated – it takes just SIX WEEKS to sort out a club and get the players onside( I agree) otherwise you are winging it.… Read more »

Wow, is that table legit?

Pretty shocked

Where was that tactical genius when we needed him against Villarreal? Tactical master class my foot.

Call it for what it was.

We were lucky to get the goal, and we parked the bus in the second half.

The shameless agenda pushing on this blog is now becoming farcical.

Surely this is a process.

Arteta is overpaid, over hyped and over his head.

He needs to go!

3rd best in the Big 6 mini league is nice, but there are 20 teams in the league and we’re currently 9th best and still rocking a £240m annual wage bill.

shaun

have we used the same formation twice since the villa real game just thinking as it looks like we may have a new tinker man lol……………………..lol

Danny

3rd best in the Big 6 mini league but losing at home to Burnley, Everton, Wolves and Aston Villa slightly puts everything into perspective……

Marc

In the mini super league 6 two clubs have sacked their managers for under performing, Liverpool have had a disastrous season and ManU can’t win unless the ref gives them cheating penalties.

Stop drinking the koolaid it’s not koolaid it’s skank piss.

We would be champions of England if there was only a 2 team mini mini league consisting of Arsenal and Chelsea. In fact we would have won The Double.

See, I can do positive vibes too,.

This blog is completely unrecognisable from what it was 6 or 7 years ago. Back then Pedro was rightly holding Wenger and others to account for poor decisions, poor management and poor performances. There were no ‘since Christmas tables’ or talk of process and people were very rightly saying that top four wasn’t good enough. The biggest change of all is with Pedro. I’m not sure whether the change came through relocation to the US or through his reaching the higher echelons of the colouring in world (marketing), but if the Pedro of 7 years ago met his current self,… Read more »

As I pointed out at the start of the season, Arsenal were given an odd distribution of games against the other big 6 sides, the first 4 all being away, AAAAHHHHHA. Therefore it was always likely that our early season position was going to be skewed low and there was a likelihood that Arteta would be under pressure given our atrocious away record against big 6 teams. The four away games pre Christmas gave us only 3 points from the game at Man U, which was our first away win against the big 6 in 29 games and our first… Read more »

Chelsea will play Leicester back to back in two very important games. . Let’s us who has more sauce, Rodgers or Tuchel.

you can look at every single game now and try to be as positive as you possibly can but with Arteta there is always a standout decision where you are like what on earth is this guy trying now .it is painfully obvious for most. I think most fans are really worried about letting dumb and dumber manage the summer as that will just extend the misery with things like Saliba becoming the next Martinez

“”3rd best in the Big 6 mini league is nice, but there are 20 teams in the league and we’re currently 9th best and still rocking a £240m annual wage bill.” This. Plus, what is the point of gaining three points against the Big 6, if you are failing to build consistency and momentum from it. Three points gained from winning over Chelsea was completely made pointless by losing to Aston Villa, Wolves Everton and drawing to Burnley. Utterly pointless to construct false “leagues” like this. Serves no purpose except to obstruct and avoid reality. This is reality. For the… Read more »
