THE ‘GOOD OR BAD’ ROUND-UP

by .

We’re going to play a game today.

GOOD OR BAD?

ARSENAL USE HEADHUNTERS FOR SCOUTS

Story in the Guardian said that Arsenal have activated a crack team of sporting headhunters to find themselves some on-the-ground scouts for Germany, UK, France and Spain. So, like… hiring scouts for scouts?

This might seem odd to you. Last year, Edu was championing the future of a centralized scouting system. Now he’s hiring new people. I found that weird, but I suppose you need to see people in the flesh and have connected people to find out important things like:

Is the player a total whopper?

Are they fast in the flesh?

How loud can they shout?

We sacked the last batch of scouts because they failed. Never forget that. There might be some sort of HR law that states you can’t rehire in the same position for a set amount of time, hence the wait. Who knows.

Two things that intrigue me here:

  1. We used headhunters. That’s a professional way to find talent. No more ‘how about my mate Bruno Mazziotti’ or ‘Kia knows a guy’ recruitment. This is a move in the right direction.
  2. WHY NOW. We’re about the enter the most pivotal summer of all time and we’re only now engaging the people that find players. Feels like we missed the boat there.

SCORE: GOOD

LA RAMS LOVE WHAT YOUNG COACH BRINGS TO THE PARTY

Sometimes, to truly know what Stan vibes about, you need to look to America where is Rams team are landing lovely write-ups in the WSJ about having all their talent traded or hired.

“We’ve had a lot of turnover for all the right reasons,” coach Sean McVay says. “Those are positive problems if you’re having guys leave for better opportunities.”

The Rams were a moribund franchise for years until they made the bold decision to tap Sean McVay and make him the youngest coach in modern NFL history. Four years later, he’s still the youngest coach in the league. The difference now is that his résumé includes a Super Bowl appearance and a 43-21 record.

One of the NFL’s worst teams quickly became one of the NFL’s best teams under McVay and general manager Les Snead. The idea of hiring a young and unproven coach—particularly one with a connection to McVay—became the hottest thing in football since the wildcat.

“In an era where people are looking for turnarounds, we are a turnaround,” team president Kevin Demoff says.

Rams hire a young guy. Arsenal hire a young guy.

KSE back the Rams. MAYBE they back Arsenal.

Now, before the Deputy Douche Bags of the NFL rush to tell me I’m wrong, hear me out… Arteta is supposed to be the ideas guy, he’s supposed to be part of a transformational moment, The Rams project is pretty decent.

Seems pretty clear KSE like something about this approach.

We are long way from the top, but if we have a good summer of ‘trades’, we won’t be far off next season.

SCORE: GOOD

MIKEL ARTETA GETS CRYPTIC ABOUT CHANGE

Do I create the necessary environment for a top elite team to perform at the highest level & get everybody in condition to give their best. And do I get the best of the players that I have? The maximum, whatever the level is. This is how I judge myself.’

Well Mikel, clearly not, we just shit our pants against Villareal over the two legs and we’re midtable. Something is wrong, you have to own that, and you have to fix it. Ruthless isn’t changing a squad that mostly isn’t yours… it’s making the necessary changes to the staff you hired and fucked up a year ago. The environment isn’t perfect, the keeper department has been a disaster, things need to change.

“Now it is how we evolve, there are a lot of things that had to be done and they have been done, a lot of changes to make and a lot of them have been made. Now it is time to evolve. To evolve you to have to take things so that when they are a little more settled and established, take them to the next level.”

Big changes are coming this summer. WAR CHEST STORIES ARE THERE. We have talent that we can actually sell. Arteta needs to move hard at the squad. Shift on players that are old or useless. Sign in a blend of ready-made and youth. This is his last window where he can get away with pointing at the last 10 years. The moves have to be elite.

Question is, does a man that won’t admit Xhaka at left back was a mistake have it in him to admit his backroom team might also need a bit of the non-negotibales treatment? Does a man addicted to pumping players that let him down have the guts to tell David Luiz and Kia the party is over?

We’ll see.

Oh I am oh too aware unfortunately. Said it is what we need, not what we will get or what I expect from the summer.

We COULD raise a nice chunk of money in the summer from sales but I don’t expect us to. We’ll probably soften on Willock like we did towards AMN last summer and reject a good bid for him. Can also see us keeping and stockpiling the squad with the likes of Eddie, Nelson, Chambers, Guendouzi and Xhaka rather than do what needs to be done.

Left Testicle

He also made it clear that despite the poor performances this season, there is an ongoing project at Arsenal that needs to be completed.

“We are in the middle,” he said. “We are not at the start or at the end, it is a process that we are in.

We’re in the middle of something!

Marko
Aubamayang would score 30-40 goals next season in the Chelsea team…no problem.
Their football is designed for a top level finisher..
Werner misses at least 4/5 sitters every week, chances that Aubamayang would put away with ease.

Guaranteed that Tuchel wouldn’t ask his prolific striker to waste energy chasing lost causes.

We do not play to Aubamayang’s strengths…which is on the manager .

WengerEagle

Some interesting names there Marko although most are unproven outside of a top league.

Sketchy on Nunez given how much he has struggled in a shit league, although I do like his game. David has had a meh season.

Isak is a nice player, Sociedad will be in Europe though so will likely vastly overprice him.

Malen is probably my favourite in your list, ironically.

Marko

We’ll probably soften on Willock like we did towards AMN last summer and reject a good bid for him. It’s already begun people just have problems letting go of average players when it comes to Arsenal. Like players like AMN, Willock and Nketiah are not going to move the needle enough for us to get back to where we need to be and yet there’s potentially 45-70 million (low to high est) there that could help out with rebuilding the squad. Then you have the likes of chambers and Holding still here and we’re still waiting for them to kick… Read more »

Marc There’s no doubt that the club is haemorrhaging money But our sponsorship deals are up in 2024, and we’ll need to start renegotiating early 2023 Arsenal can’t afford to invest, KSE can’t afford not to invest Much of what we do will be depended on our ability to move players on in a difficult market, we’ve got far too many players They’d be out of their minds to let Arteta + Edu loose with the cheque book, but providing we can clear the decks, it’s what I think will happen Unless KSE plan on selling, they have to improve… Read more »

Lille will be completely dismantled. It was their business model to buy cheap players and resell them at a high value once they have performed well for the club. Trying to force the sale of Soumare led to their DoF Luis Campos leaving mid way through the season. Soumare rejected Newcastle offer and was initially ostracised to force him to accept the offer, but was eventually brought back in the squad and he has been phenomenal for them. Additionally this year, their previous owner is in financial difficulties and the new owner has already made clear that the budget will… Read more »

For young players to progress, they need to play competitive football consistently Nketiah will be sold this summer, and I think they’ll be a market for him, he’ll likely develop into a really good striker over the next couple of years, but he needs to play consistently to develop This is the way a good youth system works, he’s our 3rd/4th choice striker, he’s served a purpose in the squad, we’ll get a few quid for him, he’ll then be replaced internally by Balogun Same with Niles, he hasn’t developed because he hasn’t nailed down a position, or consistent football… Read more »

Are people still completely put off Jardim?

I know he had a shocking time of it in his last spell at Monaco but they were gutted of most of their best players. Shouldn’t completely discount the brilliant years he had at the club beforehand imo including beating us at the Emirates with a geriatric Berbatov up top.

He wouldn’t top my list but I would still like to see what he could do here.

Marko

Lost a comment there yeah WE I dunno why Arsenal fans continue with the whole wait until they do it in a proven league considering the amount of talent we miss out on with that stance while our rivals are willing to take the risk and also we’re no longer in a position to buy a proven 20-30+ goal striker

Also Nunez has 30 goals and 14 assists in the past 2 seasons at 21 I wouldn’t consider struggling

Davey

I have watched Willock closely in the last few years and he does score goals like his purple patch for the bar codes but he will never be good enough for Arsenal, he is mentioned as a box to box midfielder and this is false in the opposition box defo but he never tracks back and we need to cash in now while his value is high.

WengerEagle

Marko

You’re padding his numbers with that shite, most of those were in the Segunda division. May as well mention Raul de Tomas while you’re at it then.

He has 6 goals in the Portuguese League.

I wouldn’t say no to a player outside of a top 5 league, it just brings a much higher risk is all. For every Van Persie you get 10 Vincent Janssen’s out of Holland.

Marko

Listen in the last few years Newcastle have spent 20 million on Wilson, 40 million on Joelinton, about 15 million on Saint Maximin and 20 million on Almiron…if we could get them to pay 20-25 million for Joe Willock I would take it and run

Samesong

Release the Balogun think people will be surprised by him if given the chances

Valentin

Every club needs squad players. Willock, AMN, Nelson, Nkethia could be those squad players.

If PSG and Bayern made use of Choupo Moting (who got relegated with Stoke) as understudy of their main striker. That proves that having decent backup willing to sit on the bench is crucial for big club. If Arsenal aspires to be big club again, it needs those types of players.

Romford Pele, Gilles Grimandi were those players under Arsenal.

Marc

Strangely if we want to raise funds this summer the most productive place to sell is going to be smaller PL clubs.

Outside of Saka we don’t really have anyone good enough for the petro clubs – not that we’d want to sell him anyway. Most clubs across Europe are going to be short of money because of COVID and can’t match the wages we pay for the likes of Laca anyway whereas the likes of Burnley, Brighton and the promoted clubs will have money to spend and the likes of Willock, Nketiah, AMN etc might be attractive to them.

CG

The G ””’Lille will be completely dismantled.”””’ Not if we keep giving them for £100 000 000 for the likes of Pepe and Gabriel they won’t. (One can’t pass the ball 10 yards the other can’t use his right foot but there you go.) They have improved immeasurably since these 2 were sold. Look, credit to Willock. He has taken his chances at Newcastle brilliantly and they have played a massive part in keeping them up. His all-round performances aren’t that of an Arsenal player though, at least not to the level that we aspire to be. He has barely started for a Newcastle outfit that were in a relegation battle. What happens if the goals dry up which they are bound to? I personally think that if Newcastle offer 25m ish we should take it and run. He’ll likely go on to be a good player but it just wouldn’t be good… Read more »

Hello

WengerEagle

Still can’t believe we booted out Martinez, lol what a howler.

Valentin

WE,

What do you think will be the cost of replacing a squad player AND paying senior player wage?
Look at the overall cost, not just the shiny fee.

I made the same point when we sold Martinez that selling a good home grown GK on £20kpw for £16 millions will end up costing us money. And now everybody agrees that Martinez will likely fetch £40 millions.

Marc

Valentin

Only problem there is Martinez was no longer a squad player and if he’d stayed would’ve expect a first team salary.

WengerEagle

Valentin

Major difference there is that Martinez was one of our [very few] star performers.

Willock was a fringe player for us and contributing very little.

Valentin

Marc, We offered him more than Aston Villa, so the salary was not an issue. My point is that people assume that the squad will be filled with super star when in reality bar ManCity, players from 17-25 position in the squad are just filler. Let’s fill them with youngsters who will an attachment to the club. Also what is the point of selling HG players to replace them by players who can’t make the premiership squad because of HG quota restriction. Sokratis, Özil did not make the squad. If we sell Willock, Nelson and Nkethia we have to replace… Read more »

De Bruyne + Salah were both binned by Chelsea, before going elsewhere to develop Maddison, Grealish, Fernandes, none of these players were pulling up any trees at 21 The idea you can predict how a young player will develop with regular football, is nuts Saka is the exception, not the general rule Plenty of fans had hopes that Smith-Rowe would develop, but I’m not sure many would have predicted quite how impressive he’s been, he’s gone from Huddersfield to Arsenal Neither Saka or Smith-Rowe are at a level we need them to be yet, and they’re not supposed to be,… Read more »

Regarding Willock, why do people pretend that we are some elite European giant of a club with good midfielders. Circa £70 million accrued losses over the 3 seasons 16/17 – 18/19, £47 million loss last season that doesn’t include a major loss of income due to COVID, a loss of £90 – £100 million in match day income this season with an increased not reduced wage bill and next season will see a loss of Europa League TV / prize money and reduced season ticket revenue wiping out the savings in getting Ozil etc off the wage bill. I would be careful to assess some of the youngsters in the squad until a proper manager comes in because the last two seasons have been chaotic and tumultuous.
Players are succeeding in spite of the coaching, not because of it.

We need a proper manager. That’s why the Kroenkes are in the gutter league with the likes Mike Ashley now.
They will spend guilt money this summer on renewing the contracts of Laca and Luiz.

Nobody is scoffing at it. Willock though has been an impact sub for Newcastle, quite different to the role that ESR played for us in our bright spell at the turn of the year.

In an ideal world sure, keep him on as a squad player that can grab us a goal off the bench.

If Newcastle offer us good money for him though [ballpark of 25m], would you really turn it down? No European football so we’re going to have fuck all to spend unless we raise funds.

Rich

Terralon David Dein once said: “Get it right on the pitch, and the rest will take care of itself” It’s now a global game, the PL is the most watch league in the world, and football is the most watched sport A whole generation of kids are growing up not supporting Arsenal, we’ve benefitted massively from being an attractive proposition to players who grew up watching Arsene Wenger teams Right now we’re not winning the hearts and minds of any young kids across the globe, and KSE need to recognise this, and put it right If we want to sell… Read more »

Selling Emi , bringing in Runarsson as the number two, and having Leno wanting to leave now ( if true), should probably rank at an all time high in mismanagement of the goalkeeper position at a major club.

No hyperbole whatsoever.

Guns of Brixton- One can only hope!

Bellerin and Leno are far too inconsistent and will generate much needed funds for replacements.

Luiz and Willian were terrible signings, I suspect we will be lucky in the case of Willian to not be on the hook for the majority of his contract even if he does go.

Granit wanted out and Mikel said no, shocking stuff when you really think about it, regardless of how well he has done to not fuck up every fortnight.

raptora

I’m sure everyone is pleased that last Summer Arteta declined ~20m pounds for Maitland Niles. A pat on the back for you Mikel. Job well done.

I’m be pleasantly surprised if we got £15-£20 mill in this market

Hopefully we’ve built a business model that can deal with the malleability of football revenue

We’ve apparently got relegation clauses, would make sense to incentive the players with increased wages for European qualification

Rich

Don’t worry Tom, you’re on my list 😘

DigitalBob

Marc, yep I hear you but I think we can reasonably expect around the figure outlined by Rich for Bellerin. Leno will probably fetch around the same.

In terms of replacements good scouting makes use of that £30 -£40 million. The likes of Max Aarons or the Ajax keeper(should his ban be overturned) are probably affordable and gettable.

My worry is it will be Kepa and Alonso that join our ever growing list of Chelsea secret agents!

You’re forever projecting this idea we cant sell players for reasonable fees. WE, You keep repeating that Willock has been an impact sub for Newcastle, but that simply not true. Willock has started 8 games and came in 3 more games. He scored 5 goals for them. People get attracted by the high shinny fees and not realise that with a high fee often come also a high salary which can sometimes be a chain around the neck of the club. When you bring the overall cost per year, most Italian, Spanish clubs can’t compete for £15 millions a year player. Wenger eagle
Of course I would be tested to sell Willock for good money but we have a lot of wasters in the club, The so-called elite midfielder, Partey is no where rounded, there are parhs of his game that he can learn from Willock.

Willock has proven himself so he gets a stay of execution. I understand your point though, we don’t sell on a high like we missed out of selling Joel Campbell after the 2014 WC.

Rich

Valentin It’s basically what happened with Torreira + Guendouzi last summer, we had an oversupply of players, and an undersupply of squad places Every time we buy a player whether they’re homegrown or non homegrown, without moving one on, we weaken our negotiating position Clubs can just wait until the end of the window and either get cheap deals, or loans, and we’ll either have to accept whatever’s on offer, or go into the season with a surplus of players, and an unmanageable squad of disenfranchised players Too much competition, kills competition, because there’s only 11 places in the team,… Read more »

“Everybody wants the club to improve the squad etc but wish lists that you can’t back up with at least some idea of how you’d do it are a waste of time.“ No, you’re confusing me with one of the suits at Arsenal. I’m a fan, I can absolutely sit and outline what my intentions would generally be with the squad given an upcoming summer window. I don’t have to validate those views with details and figures because you find speculation futile. Arsenal aren’t rectifying 10 years of poor planning by not throwing money at the issue. Stan will need… Read more »

Are Saka and ESR really that good or are they part of the problem.

How nice to see you back ( not)
Can you ever muster a shred of positivity or because you know everything is that not
possible ?

Jessica Alba is insanely fine. Good call

Did Emery perform.miracles or is the team as bad as Champagne Charlie makes out.

There shouldn’t be any confusion about keeping Laca, there shouldn’t be any murking around. He needs to know by now that he is leaving by now.
There are equally gifted strikers that will luxuriate on one quarter of his wages . We need to remeber that we are not even

Danny Ings has one year left on his contract and is on 50k weekly!

Marc Sacking them both and starting again is a good shout My concern is that if we sack Arteta, Edu will replace him with a Kia special, and that’ll push us back another 2 years, we really can’t afford to get the next appointment wrong Until we start getting our squad planning, contract management, scouting, + recruitment right Then I don’t think it’ll make too much difference who our head coach is, When you breakdown some of our decision making over the last few years, it’s not hard to workout where we’ve gone horribly wrong Go and get Rangnick, Campos… Read more »

Report out today saying that Willian wants to leave. I know there’s all sorts of bullshit stories out there but one can dream

It seems so obvious so why can’t the Kroenke’s see it?

Sacking Arteta is the easiest decision you could make. No manager could perform as abysmally as Arteta.

Rich “My concern is that if we sack Arteta, Edu will replace him with a Kia special, and that’ll push us back another 2 years, we really can’t afford to get the next appointment wrong” This why you are wrong. Why is there a reticence to hire and fire … till we get it right.? Even the best DoF don’t get every managerial hire right, they are more likely to get it wrong than right which is why you assess their work as an aggregate over time, like in 5 years. Arteta hasn’t met the requirements, he ought to be… Read more »

Rich wasn’t saying don’t sack Arteta he was saying we need to sack Edu as well as letting Edu replace Arteta would be a bad move.

Bertie Mee “””CG How nice to see you back ( not) Can you ever muster a shred of positivity or because you know everything is that not possible ?””” No, not with this rabble in charge. I can only say it as I see it. (I’ll leave the fairy tales to you.) Start acting like a proper club, with proper proven persons in charge and Ill get on board again. I ll remind you it was not me, that have us in midtable, out of Europe for the first time for a quarter of a century and made us turgid… Read more »

Listen say what you want about Chelsea, they are shit and scum no doubt but TBF, they dont fuck around when it comes to being competitive like we do. Yes, they hire and fire until they get it right. All the time. No time for sentiment. Even their legend Fat Frank got canned. That mentality is what we need at the club. Too much wishy washy ness. Too much sentiment. This fake talk of being ruthless. Etc. To be the best, you need the best running your club. We do not have that at all. KSE needs to get a… Read more »
