THE ‘GOOD OR BAD’ ROUND-UP

by .

We’re going to play a game today.

GOOD OR BAD?

ARSENAL USE HEADHUNTERS FOR SCOUTS

Story in the Guardian said that Arsenal have activated a crack team of sporting headhunters to find themselves some on-the-ground scouts for Germany, UK, France and Spain. So, like… hiring scouts for scouts?

This might seem odd to you. Last year, Edu was championing the future of a centralized scouting system. Now he’s hiring new people. I found that weird, but I suppose you need to see people in the flesh and have connected people to find out important things like:

Is the player a total whopper?

Are they fast in the flesh?

How loud can they shout?

We sacked the last batch of scouts because they failed. Never forget that. There might be some sort of HR law that states you can’t rehire in the same position for a set amount of time, hence the wait. Who knows.

Two things that intrigue me here:

  1. We used headhunters. That’s a professional way to find talent. No more ‘how about my mate Bruno Mazziotti’ or ‘Kia knows a guy’ recruitment. This is a move in the right direction.
  2. WHY NOW. We’re about the enter the most pivotal summer of all time and we’re only now engaging the people that find players. Feels like we missed the boat there.

SCORE: GOOD

LA RAMS LOVE WHAT YOUNG COACH BRINGS TO THE PARTY

Sometimes, to truly know what Stan vibes about, you need to look to America where is Rams team are landing lovely write-ups in the WSJ about having all their talent traded or hired.

“We’ve had a lot of turnover for all the right reasons,” coach Sean McVay says. “Those are positive problems if you’re having guys leave for better opportunities.”

The Rams were a moribund franchise for years until they made the bold decision to tap Sean McVay and make him the youngest coach in modern NFL history. Four years later, he’s still the youngest coach in the league. The difference now is that his résumé includes a Super Bowl appearance and a 43-21 record.

One of the NFL’s worst teams quickly became one of the NFL’s best teams under McVay and general manager Les Snead. The idea of hiring a young and unproven coach—particularly one with a connection to McVay—became the hottest thing in football since the wildcat.

“In an era where people are looking for turnarounds, we are a turnaround,” team president Kevin Demoff says.

Rams hire a young guy. Arsenal hire a young guy.

KSE back the Rams. MAYBE they back Arsenal.

Now, before the Deputy Douche Bags of the NFL rush to tell me I’m wrong, hear me out… Arteta is supposed to be the ideas guy, he’s supposed to be part of a transformational moment, The Rams project is pretty decent.

Seems pretty clear KSE like something about this approach.

We are long way from the top, but if we have a good summer of ‘trades’, we won’t be far off next season.

SCORE: GOOD

MIKEL ARTETA GETS CRYPTIC ABOUT CHANGE

Do I create the necessary environment for a top elite team to perform at the highest level & get everybody in condition to give their best. And do I get the best of the players that I have? The maximum, whatever the level is. This is how I judge myself.’

Well Mikel, clearly not, we just shit our pants against Villareal over the two legs and we’re midtable. Something is wrong, you have to own that, and you have to fix it. Ruthless isn’t changing a squad that mostly isn’t yours… it’s making the necessary changes to the staff you hired and fucked up a year ago. The environment isn’t perfect, the keeper department has been a disaster, things need to change.

“Now it is how we evolve, there are a lot of things that had to be done and they have been done, a lot of changes to make and a lot of them have been made. Now it is time to evolve. To evolve you to have to take things so that when they are a little more settled and established, take them to the next level.”

Big changes are coming this summer. WAR CHEST STORIES ARE THERE. We have talent that we can actually sell. Arteta needs to move hard at the squad. Shift on players that are old or useless. Sign in a blend of ready-made and youth. This is his last window where he can get away with pointing at the last 10 years. The moves have to be elite.

Question is, does a man that won’t admit Xhaka at left back was a mistake have it in him to admit his backroom team might also need a bit of the non-negotibales treatment? Does a man addicted to pumping players that let him down have the guts to tell David Luiz and Kia the party is over?

We’ll see.

Chelski’s pace could cause us real problems tomorrow, depending on who they dress. I wonder what our fearless leader will dream up for this one.

MD-Gunner

They are in a top 4 race plus they have Tuchel and Arsenal has Diet Pep, what do you think how this will end? Chelsea securing a top 4 place is where my money is on.

Tony

Wow! How Le-Grove moves in ever shorter cycles. Pedro-Pete on the rebound Arteta love affair that will only end in Pedro’s heartbreak again. Shocker!!! Welcome back Marc you’ve been missed during your hiatus. Any chance you can do some Aussi scouting while you’re out there and make some extra cash from Vinai & Edu who feel external scouting sources are going to offer better than company employed internal scouts. Marc, I did mean men’s scouting, but by all means try your hand at scouting the woman’s football first to keep your hand and other appendages in. Maybe you can drop… Read more »

I wonder if arteta made his wife wait at the alter for 30 mins before walking in to marry her to test her commitment 😂

Guns of SF

Auba vs Arteta’s non negiotables.
hmmm

China1

I don’t mind auba being punished for being late. So long as other similar or worse discrepancies are also punished accordingly.

Guns of SF

Mike has yet to get Auba firing again…. I put that on him.
This LW experiment is another notch in Mikes belt of shit…
The footall has been so ugly this season… bar moments of individual brilliance.

The issue with keeping Mike is that he is a defensive coach… someone who likes to prevent goals versus entertaining fans and scoring …

He would better suited in Italy… honestly. Should cut his teeth managing Crotone or something … not here.

China1

Yeah guns he might actually do ok at an Italian lower mid table team. That would suit him

Rambo

Pedro flipping on his opinion and writing click bait article/comments. Marc and Marko returning at the same time.

Not weird at all

Guns of SF

Pedro is infatuated with Arteta. It is like the guy breaks his heart every time and he gives him another chance anyway. He wrote a piece on why losing to bummery was sackable and now he is back to “if we aren’t firing him, we need to protect him from himself”. It is ridiculous to be honest. Arteta has failed. His football is watchable in 1 out of 10 of the games. The rest is shocking. And there are no results either. What makes people think we will do any better next season? Knowing Arsenal, we will stay with him… Read more »

Guns of SF

Yea Pedro is good at keeping us on our toes
Up and down… and I still dont know why he hates Emery so much? Dude was ok… not really hateable…

Tony

Same is happening with Arteta as happened with Emery.

There will be fall out when Arteta is finally fired and that will be our season over again as far as CL places are concerned.

Wash rinse repeat.

Arsenal being Arsenal while the world laughs at us.

Guns of SF

I can see Auba going to Chelsea…lol Tuchel attitude is markedly different to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s reaction to Aubameyang’s poor timekeeping, dropping him from Arsenal’s starting line-up for what was determined a “breach of pre-match protocols.” Aubameyang’s relationship with Arteta has appeared strained during a difficult season in which his mother fell ill and he has battled malaria but by contrast, Tuchel claims he still feels a strong bond with the Gabon international. “It was a pleasure to work with him, always a smile on his face, a very, very honest guy, bit of a crazy guy but this… Read more »

Guns of SF

An experienced coach, who knows how to work with different personalities is what makes for a good one…

MIke is so rigid in his rules and his football, it really is a reflection of who he is as a person.

Tuchel would have been great for us. Of course that ship sailed…. KSE and Edu are clueless.

China1

Habesha you’re right

And besides the few remaining sycophants, absolutely no one will be surprised when it happens and mid season we’re replacing the manager and talking of the written off season as the next guy comes in

Guns of SF

It is inevitable ….inevitable

China1

I’m quite sure people just bought into the idea of arteta rather than arteta himself

If emery had never been sacked and had continued with exactly the same performances, results etc that Arteta has the same people who are excusing artetas failures would be on here foaming at the mouth about how emery has to go

It’s less about football or arsenal and more about them

Guns of SF

China

“the idea of arteta”

what a hideous though….SMH

Habesha Gooner

China Absolutely. It will be hardly surprising when he fails. I have seen enough to know it would be surprising if he actually manages to get a tune out of the whole team for a full season. And it is not like we haven’t spent money. We would need to improve some positions like CM,CAM and RB but unless he can sign bruno Fernandez and he turns our fortunes around single handedly, then the results and performances won’t get any much better. And then in the middle of the season, we will fire him writing off another season. It is… Read more »

This whole Arteta debacle conclusively proves the existence of a large number of morons who are easily manipulated.

No wonder politicians get away with murder.

DivineSherlock

After reading this post I can conclusively say Pedro is just Kroenke’s mouthpiece. Look at every time he makes a decision and he compares it to The Rams. It looks to me that Rams just lucked out with their manager whereas we are stuck with the sauciest manager in not even London .

Guns of SF

If MIke goes to Serie A, you can call him Special Spaghetti Sauce

Leftside

Some of us were saying from the beginning the appointment of Arteta likely ends in tears for the simple fact that he had no tangible managing experience and top level football is unforgiving.

This was before anybody knew he was a megalomaniacal, arrogant, egocentric coward who picks and chooses his battles depending on “seniority” and is too big to learn from his mistakes.

Let’s hope we’re not in a position where we have to get rid of him and rush another appointment to save our season next year.

Leftside

Arsenal will be an irrelevance under Arteta. We don’t score goals, we are easy nullified and beaten at home. The substitutions and tactics make little sense and we are now firmly a midtable side.

Somehow though, after seeing enough of him to know he isn’t the answer..we will just click into gear next season right.

Kroenkephobe

Artetanaccio. Calcio da merda.

Emiratesstroller

Aubameyang may have had a poor season by his standards, but the suggestion that Arsenal made the wrong decision in offering him a new contract is ridiculous. Last season Aubameyang scored 29 goals in all competitions and replacing him would have been well beyond our transfer budget at the time. Personally I would not write off Aubameyang just yet. There have been clearly offield problems in Aubameyang’s personal life specifically the illness of his mother and the bout of malaria.. There are some people who post on here who are habitually wanting change for change sake whether it is the… Read more »

The bigger the (net) warchest, if magically available for this transfer window, the sooner the club needs to sack Edu and Arteta to avoid reaching terminal velocity in the free fall…

Btw Tuchel wouldn’t have git through first round interview… does he speak 5 languages ? ?

Emiratesstroller

It will be very interesting to see what material changes will be made to our squad this summer. I can see the club “ATTEMPTING” to offload a lot of players, but whether that will be achievable on the scale we would like to see and more importantly generating a decent transfer budget remains to be seen. The starting X1 positions which need urgent attention are RB and CMF. Both Bellerin and Ceballos will be leaving and we don’t have ready-made replacements coming through system of right quality. Then there is a debate about our goalkeeping resources. Leno has made several… Read more »

Luteo Guenreira

The comparison to McVay really is stretch, McVay had instant success for the Rams, I know Arteta won a trophy but the only real similarities are their being young and employed by the Kroenkes, other than that their backgrounds and career trajectories have been very different. The NFL is a different game, 53 man squads, loads of coaches for each position, different coordinators for each side of the ball. McVay has had success because he knows what he’s good at, and he’s left the portions he knows he lacks in to others. He sticks to big picture things and offensive… Read more »

China1, It’s exactly that. Some people have that idea of Arteta being the ideal manager, young, hip, great coach, play entertaining football, linked to Arsenal history and they can’t reconcile the reality with their dream. So they find scapegoats why it’s not his fault that he is failing miserably. Tactically he has been schooled twice by Emery, yet it is his assistant fault for not stopping from implementing brain fart tactics. Personnel wise, he keep selecting the wrong one and playing favourite, yet it is because he does not have the right players. That’s Edu’s fault. Never mind that this… Read more »

Interesting article today on Daily Telegraph sports pages. Thomas Tuchel in an interview talks about his great relationship with Aubameyang when he managed Borussia Dortmund. He rates the player very highly not just as a footballer and goalscorer, but his personality as well. He comments also on Aubameyang’s time keeping, which was well known at BD. Aubameyang was frequently late for meetings and training and they resolved the problem by giving him a quarter of hour earlier time. Tuchel went on to say that Aubameyang was an outstanding hard working trainer on the pitch. One of the main reasons that… Read more »

Not Pedro’s best post. First, the L.A Rams analogy falls apart quickly. The year before McVay arrived, the Rams went 4-12. In his first year, he lead them to an 11-5 record. In his 2nd season he lead them to a 13-3 and took them to the Super Bowl. Aside from the comment that with a few additions ‘we’re not far off’, Pedro also says that we have talent that we can actually sell. Let’s put it another way. This season was not entirely barren, it had its high-spots, such as finally ridding the Club of Ozil and his acolytes. But there is no mileage in dwelling on the past, which is, I think, Pedro’s key message. Can’t wait for the Ferguson documentary. The trailer looks amazing. I can’t help but think, if Wenger had rough results at the start of his reign and the fans turned their back on him, he would have been more determined to win trophies even in his latter years. “Chelsea have scored 6 more than us in our worst ever season. They conceded 5 against West Brom a few weeks ago. Marc

“If Arteta clears the remnants of Wenger’s mess this summer,”

Run through the bulk of the first team squad and a huge number of the players are Arteta’s. We’ve had more than enough time, spent more than enough money and signed enough players to get over Wenger’s mess – this is just another excuse as to why Arteta needs more time.

The backpass

“Ask Steve Round, he wins it every week.”

As I said Earlier its not Arteta Pedro is loyal to its the Kroenkes . Jf tomorrow they sack Arteta and Josh announces Ralph Hassenhutl as the next manager , we’ll see a puff piece on how he has improved Southampton with all the xG stats and how Danny Ings will be our marquee signing this year.

Marc

Sherlock If you think Pedro isn’t all in on Arteta then you haven’t been following what he’s been writing for the last couple of years. If he was pro Kroenke he would’ve got behind Emery, personally I think Pedro’s position on the Kroenke’s is the same as most rational fans – they’re not great owners but they’re not the worst either, they allow the club to spend what it earns. Where they have been piss poor is in recruitment in senior positions. If there was a serious alternative to them then great but I’d want reassurances that a new owner… Read more »

Should probably start getting into some regular discussions about a new manager for when Arteta gets sacked so has to have a little idea of what we might be looking at. I personally only really consider a french or German league appointment for fairly obvious reasons they tend to travel well and Portuguese as well cause technically they’re superior and they always seem to churn out some decent managers unfortunately Italians outside of one or two tend to stick with Italian clubs. Let’s drop the Kroenkes are not bad owners mantra.
They are horrible owners.

Any owner that allows an inexperienced newbie CEO, novice technical director with zero European football management and rookie egotistical manager to run a major club is a terrible owner.

Any manager that missed the 3-4 chances to fire a bad manager this season is a piss poor owner.

The Kroenkes are pretty poor managers.

Batistuta

Marko

Still is Allegri for me, no way Conte leaves Inter now and neither would Gatier if Lilie hold on to their lead.

Niko Kovac has not been too bad at Monaco too by the way, they’re a delight to watch at the moment despite that loss to Lyon

Batistuta

Gasperini and Atlanta have now scored 100 goals in successive seasons by the way, that’s absolutely incredible really.

I’d not say no to Duvan Zapata if we’re moving on Lacazette by the way

Marc

Marko

I think what we really need is to bring in an established DOF – whether that’s Overmars, Rangnick or some other and then let them bring in a manager. The new manager doesn’t have to be a name just someone a DOF can look at as being the right long term choice for what we want to do.

Dissenter

* The Kroenkes are pretty poor owners because they don’t get the culture and are running Arsenal, likes it’s an American sporting franchise whose important depends solely on its location.

Batistuta

Truth is anyone who knew what they were doing would have sacked Arteta by now but somehow we’re stuck with horrible horrible owners so basically next season could probably be a bust too cuz he’s going to get sacked by Christmas

Marc

I didn’t say they are good owners, there are elements where they are OK but as I said where they’ve been poor is in their recruitment.

If they’d have hired a real DOF and let him hire the manager etc we’d be in a decent position.

If you want seriously bad owners look at the Glazer’s, Venky’s, Hicks and Gillett or Levy and Lewis.

Galtier is joining Nice apparently. Seems a bizarre move on the face of it but he’s allegedly been offered a massive increase in salary and Nice must have a fairly ambitious project, Lille will probably sell a lot of their talent in the summer too after the title win. What do you mean by “if we are moving on Lacazette by the way”

I cannot imagine any scenario that will favor keeping Lacazette, that is if we are a serious club.
There ought not be a “maybe’ scenario, he has to be sold. He’s not been good value for that transfer fee we pain and the massive wages he earns.

It’s hilarious to see Southampton reluctant to make Danny Ings their highest paid player at 70k weekly while an Europe-less Arsenal is contemplating extending Laca’s 180k weekly deal.

Marko

Bati Conte has been linked to the sack for months apparently him and the inter board don’t get along which is incredible given how successful he is wherever he goes. And Galtier with all due respect we should be able to get from Lille if we wanted him. Zapata is like a more mobile Giroud really, Muriel for me too lightweight

You’re right that there’s nothing in the CF position coming up bar Mbappe and Haaland which is why it would have been brilliant if we had a manger that got the best out of our own star CF in Auba, we’ve always known what he’s about so would be great to work to maximizing his skill set to get him firing

Nah, Gerrard is waiting to take the big seat once Klopp’s contract ends next season I reckon.

We’ve scored less than 50 PL goals this season with Aubameyang and Lacazette our ST options. Auba has scored just 10 in the league ffs, 8 from open play.

“Talks of 5 senior players wanting to leave this summer.Leno
Hector
Luiz
Xhaka
Willian”

It does look like Leno and Bellerin want out. As for the other 3 – Luiz’s contract is up, Willian won’t get anywhere near the money he’s on at Arsenal anywhere else and remember he wants to stay in London, as for Xhaka he’s down to 2 years on his contract and 28 – it’s agent talk to get him a new deal, which he’ll get just wait for Xhaka to get a 3 year extension on £200k per week this summer.

Who’s suggesting other than Pedro (and we all know his game) is suggesting that we sack Edu but keep Arteta?

I do agree though again how much is our struggles down to the players not being good enough or the manager not having a clue. I go with the manager cause it wasn’t that long ago that Auba was winning/challenging for the golden boot in the premier league. Still open to a complete revamp though
