THE ‘GOOD OR BAD’ ROUND-UP

by .

We’re going to play a game today.

GOOD OR BAD?

ARSENAL USE HEADHUNTERS FOR SCOUTS

Story in the Guardian said that Arsenal have activated a crack team of sporting headhunters to find themselves some on-the-ground scouts for Germany, UK, France and Spain. So, like… hiring scouts for scouts?

This might seem odd to you. Last year, Edu was championing the future of a centralized scouting system. Now he’s hiring new people. I found that weird, but I suppose you need to see people in the flesh and have connected people to find out important things like:

Is the player a total whopper?

Are they fast in the flesh?

How loud can they shout?

We sacked the last batch of scouts because they failed. Never forget that. There might be some sort of HR law that states you can’t rehire in the same position for a set amount of time, hence the wait. Who knows.

Two things that intrigue me here:

  1. We used headhunters. That’s a professional way to find talent. No more ‘how about my mate Bruno Mazziotti’ or ‘Kia knows a guy’ recruitment. This is a move in the right direction.
  2. WHY NOW. We’re about the enter the most pivotal summer of all time and we’re only now engaging the people that find players. Feels like we missed the boat there.

SCORE: GOOD

LA RAMS LOVE WHAT YOUNG COACH BRINGS TO THE PARTY

Sometimes, to truly know what Stan vibes about, you need to look to America where is Rams team are landing lovely write-ups in the WSJ about having all their talent traded or hired.

“We’ve had a lot of turnover for all the right reasons,” coach Sean McVay says. “Those are positive problems if you’re having guys leave for better opportunities.”

The Rams were a moribund franchise for years until they made the bold decision to tap Sean McVay and make him the youngest coach in modern NFL history. Four years later, he’s still the youngest coach in the league. The difference now is that his résumé includes a Super Bowl appearance and a 43-21 record.

One of the NFL’s worst teams quickly became one of the NFL’s best teams under McVay and general manager Les Snead. The idea of hiring a young and unproven coach—particularly one with a connection to McVay—became the hottest thing in football since the wildcat.

“In an era where people are looking for turnarounds, we are a turnaround,” team president Kevin Demoff says.

Rams hire a young guy. Arsenal hire a young guy.

KSE back the Rams. MAYBE they back Arsenal.

Now, before the Deputy Douche Bags of the NFL rush to tell me I’m wrong, hear me out… Arteta is supposed to be the ideas guy, he’s supposed to be part of a transformational moment, The Rams project is pretty decent.

Seems pretty clear KSE like something about this approach.

We are long way from the top, but if we have a good summer of ‘trades’, we won’t be far off next season.

SCORE: GOOD

MIKEL ARTETA GETS CRYPTIC ABOUT CHANGE

Do I create the necessary environment for a top elite team to perform at the highest level & get everybody in condition to give their best. And do I get the best of the players that I have? The maximum, whatever the level is. This is how I judge myself.’

Well Mikel, clearly not, we just shit our pants against Villareal over the two legs and we’re midtable. Something is wrong, you have to own that, and you have to fix it. Ruthless isn’t changing a squad that mostly isn’t yours… it’s making the necessary changes to the staff you hired and fucked up a year ago. The environment isn’t perfect, the keeper department has been a disaster, things need to change.

“Now it is how we evolve, there are a lot of things that had to be done and they have been done, a lot of changes to make and a lot of them have been made. Now it is time to evolve. To evolve you to have to take things so that when they are a little more settled and established, take them to the next level.”

Big changes are coming this summer. WAR CHEST STORIES ARE THERE. We have talent that we can actually sell. Arteta needs to move hard at the squad. Shift on players that are old or useless. Sign in a blend of ready-made and youth. This is his last window where he can get away with pointing at the last 10 years. The moves have to be elite.

Question is, does a man that won’t admit Xhaka at left back was a mistake have it in him to admit his backroom team might also need a bit of the non-negotibales treatment? Does a man addicted to pumping players that let him down have the guts to tell David Luiz and Kia the party is over?

We’ll see.

SCORE: BAD

AFCSorry who are the genuine Arsenal fans?

Those that follow or tow the party line blindly-I’m guessing.
A bit like following the CCP-no dissenters..

Champagne Charlie

Marc

Of course I do, on your say so naturally. Same as earlier where I apparently live in a fantasy to merely state my intention to sell Pepe and Laca.

Good thing you’re about to police such opinions and lay the land for us all. Not sure where I’d be without your expertise on the matter, you should really try and avoid getting banned so often for being a prick.

AFC Forever

The pressing created the mistake from Jorginho, which we capitalised on. ESR spoke about how they worked on that on the training ground for the Chelsea game.To hold on to that lead and defend the way we did as a team, should be praised. Arteta and the lads did very well tonight.

azed

3rd in the table since Christmas as well… couldn’t believe it, but 22 games of form has us just three off United.

Maybe and just may be we should have kept Wenger.

Remember when Wenger used to win the best team in a calendar year trophy?

What was your reaction to that?

Do you struggle in real life as much as you do on here? Do you lie to make your self look important in the real world like on here?

You have zero grasp with reality – you say your intention would be to sell Laca and Pepe. When someone asks who to and for how much you throw a tantrum because you’re a child.

I’m genuinely happy I’ll never bump into you in person at a match.

Marc

“Throw a tantrum” is how idiots like you process a disagreement. I don’t feel compelled as a fan to state who I’d sell a player to, and for how much. I shared the basic principle from a list of players who I’d sell, keep, and loan.

Marc

“Remember when Wenger used to win the best team in a calendar year trophy?”

That’s precisely the type of comment that got me binned!

Marc

Christ almighty – if no ones buying you fuck wit it doesn’t matter who you’d like to sell – you’re stuck with the player as he has a contract.

The very fact you can’t fathom that says a lot more about you than it does me.

Just watched the game and happy with the win gifted us by the Chavs, but not in the manner of the backs to the wall win with our 33% possession.

We looked like what we are a mid table club scrapping for a win against the better team even if it was not their full strength.

Haven’t read any posts yet, so apologies if I’m repeating other posters.

No question for me as I’ve wanted Arteta gone since our pre Xmas decent into uncharted territory of mid table obscurity.

See Mike losing it in post game interview… who knows what the F he is referring to and talking about… TBH, its a little hard to understand him. He gives very little insight and depth when he speaks. Its usually the obvious without sharing much more… Not a confident speaker in my opinion… Sounds like he is trying to create a seige mentality with the team… like, to get them going in the last few games… it might work who knows. Great result as this will get the chelsea fans off our backs for a few days. But an empty win, too little too late. Nothing to praise here, just got very lucky.

All these form since Christmas tables are meaningless. How many years did wenger go unbeaten in the final few months and how many of those translated to success in the next season? None.

MD-Gunner

This is slowly turning into an Arteta fanboys site, can’t believe that some here can’t see what is happening with the club. Craig Burley on ESPN-FC put is squarely without a massive rebuild nothing will happen, is the money for that available? More important who will preside over the massive rebuild or is lipstick put on the Arteta Pig?

Nelson

Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Arteta is a decent defensive coach. Beating a team who just better Real and MC is not easy. He did use the same tactics to win us the FA Cup. Arsenal fans won’t accept this type of football. It is against Arsenal DNA. But for tonight, I am just happy we won against a strong team.

Tony

Areta quote::
“Every player that we have been linked with, or we had some communication with, I haven’t seen one that was refusing to come here. [It’s] completely the opposite. Everybody is very willing to join our club.”

Of course they are all they have to do is suck up to Arteta to get far more money than they’d get at another club with zero accountability.

The comment is so late Wenger.

Guns of SF

Nelson His defensive record my be taken in context. He has made us a little better… not that much better. He sets up his team not to lose- and when we actually get scored on, it makes him and the team really up against it, since we dont really showcase attacking football. Thats why he would be perfect in Serie A. They want to firstly prevent goals, then score goals. Very similar to us. Its not our DNA. I did not want us to ever turn into this type of team. If we wanted to be a defensive texam with 10 men behind the ball, why didn’t we just hire sam alladyce or Tony pullis? It was the same bunch of twats continuously enabling Wenger when he put us on a path from top 2 to top four. Here we are again the same bunch of twats fighting for a coach who has us on a path from top 4 to top 8.

This club deserves mediocrity.

If only we had nicked a win like that against Villareal . I dont mind these kind of wins , 3points is 3points. But to win at Chelsea and then losing to Burnley and Crystal Palace is fucking atrocious. Why cant Mikel maintain those same standards .

Guns of SF

We have a legit Golden Boot winner, Pepe, Martinelli, Willian ( yea I know), all players who can score and have a track record of scoring. Why do we play in such a defensive manner, when we have players who can turn us into a decent attacking team. There is something not right… and if its not Ode or ESR trying to make a difference then I put this on Mike. Its a change of coaching philosophy from what he has shown already. 9 times out of 10, we lose that game badly. How many shots at goal did Chelsea have? How many times fir the post and cross bar get rattled?.

This bus parking is not a blue print to the future but the Arteta lovers have been energized again so let’s go.

Dissenter

When Villarreal were reduced to 10 men in the first leg of the EL semis, we still didn’t go for it.
Why?
Our manager’s mentality is derived from shriveled balls as he’s barking on the sidelines to enforce it..

Guns of SF

i dont know of any games this year, that we have been on the front foot, the entire game-
Wenger days, this was common. We dominted passes, and possession.
Now, its the opposite. Look at the Chelsea stats.

I agree Dissenter, this is not the blue print for success. its a cheap way of winning- and basically hoping for the best while parking the bus. I expect this style from teams struggling in the bottom 2-3.

Its embarrasing.

Thus win doesn’t matter. Like Tuchel said, we got lucky. A lucky fluke win isn’t something you should base your future hopes on. He had Tierney, Saka, Partey, ESR and Odegaard in his midfield and he couldn’t at least attack with any sense of frequency. We has 2 shots on target. Bonaparte may have “I’d rather have lucky generals than good ones”, but personally in the long run I would rather Arsenal have a good manager who plays entertaining football than a lucky one who plays with 10 men behind the ball. The most infuriating thing is that the few time we attacked them, we were looking like we could score. So there was no need to setup like the fort Alamo and rear guard action. A friend said maybe Odegaard hit his ceiling around the time of going to RM, which does happen with players, but he’s been here since Xmas and had to hit the ground running as well playing in Arteta’s handbrake systems. The way Arteta compensates for Odegaard is to shunt ESR to the left and thus nullifying the best part of ESR’s game. Under Arteta they simply can’t play together. If Stan wants to keep Arteta after assessing all the evidence of the last 18 months then there is nothing we can do right now.

If I were Stan or Edu I’d fire and replace Areta’s backroom staff. Clear the poor lever ‘Yes’ men out and replace them with coaches who can do what they’re paid to do.

Bergkamp would be a good start and Keown as defensive coach.

Probably not a good idea to have too many old players, so headhunt other successful coaches who have CVs that match our needs.

This would make Arteta fully transparent.

Nelson

Pierre

There are two major problem when Arteta plays this system.

– We are missing one player to do the high press. Chelsea can get through the high press easily.
– The attack is one man short. It would help if the 3 CB’s could pass the ball accurately and Auba would fight for a 50/50 ball. If not, the attack is very weak.

Mr Serge

Gonsterous

I would love it if chelsea lose all their finals but that’s what arsenal have become. We have to focus on other teams failures to feel a bit better about our own results.

Pierre

Odegaard did have few good games before his injury, but he is basically a poor man’s Ozil, he does the simple things well like control, pass and retain possession and is better defensively than Ozil(who isn’t), but he doesn’t look to have the vision or class on the ball of Ozil, which makes the decision to replace Ozil with a like for like( though not as good) as a head scratcher , especially as we are apparently still paying 250 grand a week towards Ozil’s wages..

One of many head scratchers from the manager.

WengerEagle

”Tr7 he just stated the bloody obvious how is that a good comment ?”

Yeah Red has definitely had his moments on here but that wasn’t one of them.

TR7

Serge

Yes an obvious one when looked at in isolation but I was scrawling through a lot of comments this morning about post Christmas table, doing a double over Chelsea, our record against top 6, 1-0 a great result and that’s what eventually matters blah blah blah and then I read this statement which renders all the arguments meaningless. Kind of an instantaneous feeling that this was exactly what needed to be said.

andy1886

Pierre, you did see Mari almost gift them a goal early on didn’t you?

Pretty sure we will not hear all that ‘fine margins’ guff this time when the result went our way.

James wood.

Other than a Xmas gift of a goal we where ordinary.
We had one period in the second half where we held the ball
up and down the pitch for a period finally to no end.again..

Ever time players stretch an injury is likely they all look cattled.
A massive regroup is nescessary.

Great result last night, pretty laborious performance overall but at 1-0 up away from home against a superior side, the onus is on them to break us down and they couldn’t. Not sure how much credit Arteta deserves for it mind as it was predicated mainly on luck and Chelsea’s ineptitude in front of goal rather than any sort of tactical masterclass , pretty incredible how some of the cheerleaders so brazenly had their pom-poms and flares out in defence of him and were putting up these ridiculously arbitrary stats like ‘PL table since Christmas’. You are always going to have to rely on a fair amount of luck as well if you just plonk ten men behind the ball as well as stout defending.

Perhaps losing 3-2 but actually playing progressive football and going more toe to toe with Chelsea would have been more satisfactory in regards the long term with Arteta and actually start believing in what he is trying to do.

The FA Cup win didn’t propel forward and neither will this backs to the wall Chelsea victory.

We have to see consistent progressive football to even start believing in him.

TR7

I don’t like getting in to petty arguments with fellow posters but got to say Charlie and Pedro demanded style, vision and coherence when Emery was here and said his point tally was rather meaningless in the whole scheme of things,
a bit ironical that the same duo now serves us post Christmas point table when style, vision and coherence is all missing.

Ishola70

TR7
“I don’t like getting in to petty arguments with fellow posters but got to say Charlie and Pedro demanded style”

Of course it’s hugely contradictory but as they committed so hard to Arteta early even when they see he is letting them down in regards to what they said the kind of football Arteta will play would be they feel they can’t let go.

The game reminded me of the Liverpool game towards the end of last season when Liverpool were champions and gifted Arsenal a 2-1 victory despite totally dominating the game.

Fanboys were chomping at the bit then as they are now despite this season being worse than last season

Odegaard likes to drop deep, give himself space to pass.
For a creative passer, he has below average off the ball and dynamism. He’s a budget Christian Eriksen. It’s Serie A or La Liga for him

If the process is to play like a dull backs to the wall lower table team then we could have just got in Steve Bruce as manager.

Could someone please ask Arteta or Edu what exactly the process is .

Matt

Can you call last night a great result? If it actually meant something, like we were in the hunt for the title or top four, or even Europe, that would have been a great result – shit performance, but great result. However, for me it is far too little too late. It’s a meaningless 3 points. People are saying, but we beat Chelsea who are in the champions league final and its two fingers up to their fans. I think their fans couldn’t give two shits about last night to be honest, and the reason for that is – they… Read more »

I still like Odegaard and think he can be very useful for us but yeah, not so sure I want us to drop the 40 odd million on him that Real will want.

Another year loan would be ideal, you never know with Modric signing that year long extension.

TR7

Yes I don’t quite understand the hullabaloo over Odegard being one of the hottest young talents in Europe. Looks an average player to me, someone who can play a good supporting role but can’t do much on his own.

Don’t want him on loan. Surely we can do better. Sancho is the ideal signing in my head. End product and high technical ability. Unlikely though. Otherwise would rather overpay for someone like Eze. Quality talent with room to improve.

Matt – Chelsea supporters are whinging about it. Whether it’s too little too late . It’s a double over them and two cup finals albeit different managers . We are actually becoming a right royal pain in the arse to Chelsea and I got one love that

I tell who surprised me and was a good loanee and that was Benayoun.

Odegaard won’t be sold to us, Real Madrid has made that clear. Move on. Better to play ESR in the middle of the park and see him thrive. To me a new contract for ESR is much more of a priority than bringing back Odegaard permanently. If Odegaard does come back on loan, I hope he doesn’t hinder ESR’s progress… I know we’re not at the the top of English football at the moment but we still should have our pride. I don’t want us to become the finishing school for Real Madrid who aren’t ready just yet for their… Read more »

‘If people want to revel in the ‘glory’ of last night then go right ahead. Just keep the abuse and snidey comments about not being a true supporter to yourselves as for most people, last night changes absolutely nothing.’ Exactly. TR7 has already touched upon it very well but the same people who were pillorying Emery for falling short in the EL and the race for a CL spot as well as playing dull, uninspired and directionless football are now giving Arteta a pass for it with even worse results. We won last night with 30% of the ball and… Read more »

Think Sancho is nailed on for United, hopefully not as he’s going to be a great player and is already world class.

Haven’t seen much of Eze, what’s he like?

Mr Serge

I know we were damn lucky last night and it’s papered over the cracks and I was happy last night that we won. Reality is though we are shocking and it’s been the worst season in more than 30 years for me I agree with most people on here Arteta is not the man and I am not advocating he stays one iota. I just keep coming back to this point though our board is incompetent and I don’t think they will find a top replacement at best he will be adequate and that just does not cut it for… Read more »

Tell you what though, love Smith-Rowe.

Instead of taking to heart what Arteta said about him shooting for fifteen goals he took it on the chin and is shooting to improve in that area. Two games in a row now he has put himself in those dangerous areas looking to be a difference maker.

Comes across a top lad in his interview too. Can see him becoming a massive player for us.

Dela Mere

Losing to Man City was fine margins until you dig a little deeper and find Man City switching off and Arsensl not posing a single threat to goal.

DigitalBob

We beat Chelsea away for the first time in over a decade. That alone is cause for celebration and while this season has been terrible we can take a second to enjoy this one!

Arteta set us up in our FA cup formation, backs to the wall/peak Jose formation. Not pretty but effective.

I think we’d all want the football to have come along since the FA Cup run so of course he needs to do better(if he actually can).

Mr Serge

WE Eze is very talented quick good dribbler and can find a pass

WengerEagle & TR7 Excellent posts this morning gentlemen. “Exactly. TR7 has already touched upon it very well but the same people who were pillorying Emery for falling short in the EL and the race for a CL spot as well as playing dull, uninspired and directionless football are now giving Arteta a pass for it with even worse results.” You know why that is don’t you? This place has become agenda driven. Why let a few facts get in the way when one has an agenda to push? Imagine for a moment what we could achieve as a fanbase if… Read more »
