£1.8B BID INCOMING, BUT PLENTY OF QUESTIONS TO ANSWER

by .

It’s quite a weird week to be an Arsenal fan. Personally, I’m in this football purgatory where I’m not totally detached from the season, but at the same time, not overly invested in the outcome of it.

It feels like the sort of season where it could easily go to shit… or, be a massive blowout for Arsenal as we find our footing against a bang average Villareal side.

The big talking point yesterday mainly focused on the Daniel Ek news. He’s going to fax over a £1.8b bid for Arsenal.

The Daily Mail reported that people in finance circles have had Arsenal up for sale for 2 years. I find the story deeply suspicious because if that were true, I suspect the Saudi Royal consortium that tried to buy Newcastle would have been knocking on Stan’s door. There’s simply no way Daniel Ek is the first to sniff out an opportunity for Arsenal.

You’re not a seller until you sell, anything is possible, but it just seems a bit unlikely that 1) We’d sell to Ek 2) The price would be £1.8b.

I also run into lots of questions when someone can’t afford something outright.

If he’s borrowing, the money has to be paid back. How is that happening?

If he’s buying outright, where is the infusion of cash we need for players coming from?

Outside ‘love’ and process. What is the big change that’s coming?

I mean, elite tech process at Arsenal would be a huge game-changer… but here’s something to consider. Ownership that interferes with the club is usually not a good thing. The Kroenke family do most things right. They let Arsenal spend what they earn, they don’t get involved, they empower their leaders… the problem? They are very bad talent judges.

From what I hear about Ek, he’s the empowering type… and his record proves that he’s a very good judge of what great looks like with regards to said talent.

So we’ll see, it’s an exciting rumour… I’m of the mind that what we have right now hasn’t worked for a very long time and the situation looks more and more onerous for a family that has its focus firmly in America. At some point, it might be easier just to move on from Arsenal and refocus on LA.

Right, short one today, where do you stand on Daniel Ek?

Mikel Arteta’s job at Arsenal remains safe and there is expectation that he will now be given extra funds for the next transfer window.

Captain Tierney

Just one thing important to note is that no credible journalist has reported Leno wanting out.So before we start dishing out abuse at Leno, lets not forget this is just a rumour.I personally dont like the idea of our fans hurling abuse towards Leno days before a semi final.

TT

Agree with Bob. Like to know where the money is coming from. Is he a front for few billionaires? If so I’d like to know who they are before I commit.

Captain Tierney

At this point in time I’d take any half decent owner over Kroenke.

If Kroenke is such a successful business person with net worth of 8+ billion. How can he allow Arsenal to go from top 5 team in the world to mid table mediocrity.

I really cannot understand this

Danish Gooner

Who gives a shit where the Money is Coming from as long as we get rid of this god awful American

PS

There are many questions:

Has Ek’s business model been ethical?
Has Ek treated artists fairly, and paid them appropriately?
Will his business continue to thrive, or will it be over-taken by new platforms and business models?
Has Ek diversified to stabile and enhance his income stream?
How will Ek fund the purchase?
How will he fund investment in the club’s support and playing staff?

Can’t really say that many club owners are above reproach ment for their ethics and business dealings.

Will Ek be better, worse or similar to Kroenk overall?

Danish Gooner

Ffr is complete shot too pieces with the manc City verdict.

Aaron

Ek ain’t buying squat.

Captian, because his assets are like prime real estate, the appreciate over time no matter what.

All of his teams are average over the long run except the Avalanche which like AFC was a top club before he purchased them, however after Arsene left we all see what a $h*te show it really is and is now regressing to the mean.

If I’m reading the tea leaves correctly Ek is playing a long game. He’s looking to put in place a “Ek + Fans” bid, fronted by The Legends (Henry/Viera and Bergkamp) and with the backing of the Arsenal Supporters Trust. The shape/structure/size/and any potential debt component of the bid will depend on lots of factors, a key one of which will be the Government’s review of football. Early days, but by announcing his intentions early, Ek is positioning himself to be in line with whatever the outcome of the government review into football comes up with, and aligning himself with… Read more »

Is the reality that once you add back the merkin to the bald pate and a little fuzz on the upper lip, Ek is none other than Kroenke himself, and we’re all being played in a game of PR re-branding so we shut up and start consuming again?

Is the name Ek just a coincidence, or does it really represent the initials of Enos (Stanley) Kroenke?

T

I think that if the kroenkes decide to sell it will be solely from the point of view that they believe they are more likely to lose money than increase the value of their asset. Pride is of course a factor too but I dont think for a second that Stan would allow himself to become the laughing stock of american billionaires by losing a great deal of money because of pride or principless.

‘ good judge of talent ‘ is totally secondary to the main question which is FINANCE. The interests fees collaterals for decade(s) into the future is the horizon of all this . The Kroenke , much richer , bought the club for approximate 500 mil in all ( Liverpool on comparison cost only about 300 mil ) but ,spread over few years of purchase process ( stocks, Usmanov etc) , where and how will Daniel come with 4 times as much and at what price? For perspective , The Glazers stripped Manu of a 1 billion dollars by estimate ,… Read more »

1.8 billion is nowhere near enough for a start and secondly it’s borrowed money so we get saddled with debt from the start, cannot see this an attractive move in any way. All sounds very jolly with some of the legends getting involved too many Indians comes to mind.

We are 3rd in net spend list over the last five years, the money has largely been wasted, this not the fault of the owners, be careful what you wish for.

The bid is rubbish, riddled with debt, kick into touch guy is just not wealthy enough

What do you mean the owners don’t get involved.

They were going to take us out of the EPL and with it our whole fabric as a club and heritage and history.

I can’t believe how easily the owners have been forgiven by some.

Maybe it’s from those that were not too bothered about tearing up our history as a club or even secretly supported it.

andy1886

Wattsy, generally agree however the fact that the money has been wasted IS the fault of the owners. They appoint every employee from Vinai down, if they appoint crap people (or don’t fire crap people they inherited) then it’s on them if their money is spent badly.

andy1886

Just to correct you there Ernest, United fans opposed the Glazers from the start and continued to do so even when they where winning top trophies. The leveraged buyout (immoral if not illegal) has taken over £1BN out of the club in payments to the Glazers and ineterest and fees on the loans.

Iirc he also said he is happy at Arsenal.

And that is the standard response 95% of footballers give in an interview. They are actually taught how to handle media duties and usually always try to answer such questions with vague answers.

I think Man U should forfeit the game against Liverpool for not controlling their fans — but the government and the FA are gutless at the moment when it comes to facing up to fans

and in that vein I’m concerned that ‘wayward’ action by Arsenal fans on Thursday evening could give UEFA an excuse to sanction AFC — because UEFA don’t give a rat’s about fans

I am optimistic of our chances on the pitch…it would be ironic — and part of our ‘Arsenal DNA’ — to see a decent performance nullified because of actions off the pitch

Bit fed up reading about Ek and ethics regarding recording artists. No-one is forcvcing the artists to be with Spotify, it is a free market.

And what a load of tosh from some on here about the Man United fans. We should be supporting the Man United fans in their stance against shit owners just like we have shit owners. I have little to no interest in Ek turning up and splashing cash tomorrow, I’m also not interested (overly) in how he’s buying the club. My points of interest are how he’s looking to govern the club, what he wants from the club, his track record in other businesses. Ownership dictates long term growth. Chelsea have released a statement which details plans for them to allow three elected supporter representatives to attend board meetings. They will be allowed to provide fan sentiment to be considered in all club decisions. This is a good step by them, fair play.

Would Stan ever allow this? Of course not. This is one of many reasons why Ek’s bid should be welcomed. KSE have overseen the club for a decade and we have gone completely backwards. It’s not as if their American teams are any good, all trash and have never won anything.

Ek has gotten rich by not paying royalties. A smart guy but highly suspect. I’d rather stay with the devil we know. Pedro’s post same sentiment as mine on here yesterday. Ek has about $5 bn tops =-maybe less – more than most but nowhere near enough to spend £1.8bn. – on a probable loss making asset After you translate his dollar wealth to sterling, it means the club is worth more than 50% of his net worth. The problem with the Hill-Woods and their board is that they didn’t seem to invest at crucial times which could have continued / brought success.

I’m thinking of around 72/73, and 78-80.

The first phase could have regained position and moved backup from 2nd and 3rd, and losing finalists and semi-finalists.

Investment in the late 70s could have pushed the team on from cup specialists and retained the likes of Stapleton and Brady for a year or two longer, and then obtained adequate replacements (although Terry Neill wasn’t the right one to manage such a transition)

@FB – My uderstanding is that the only people to put any additional money into Arsenal post war were Granada Media and David Dein. The reason being they bought newly issued shares whereas the other shareholders (including Fiszman) bought their holdings from other shareholders (so no money went to the club, just to the sellers). And no shareholder or director put any personal money in outside if their shareholding.

My favorite piss take was when David Pleat was caught (three times) kerb crawling while Sours manager. I have feeling that KSE wouldn’t care who they sold to, if , they decided to do so. Owning a UK asset is hugely appealing to almost all foreign investors as it’s a safe haven. Stable democracy, very flexible financial regulatory authorities etc
