SOKRATIS SNITCHING?

by .

Bukayo Saka, you absolute beauty, rocking New Balance like peak Aaron Ramsey. The young superstar inked a new deal with New Balance and immediately leveled the brand up about 15 points. Good for him, let’s hope the new boots bring him many goals and many assists FOR ARSENAL SPECIFICALLY.

Let’s continue the news… Dino Mavropanos landed Rookie of the Month in Germany. That’s a nice accolade. No one saw his resurgence coming, bar the might Sven (gone too soon). It’ll be nice to have more centre-back options for next season. It really is imperative we don’t renew contracts of players that’ll stifle minutes of players that have high ceilings.

Talking of summer… there are reports that we’ll enter the battle for Hakimi this summer. One can dream. Think we need to be realistic which market we play in when it comes to right-backs, I have my doubts it’s for someone of his quality and price. Still, nice to be linked.

The focus this week is all about Olympiacos in the away leg. We head to the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium to take on a side that’ll likely contain Sokratis. He’s been giving them all our secrets apparently.

‘let them fuck it up themselves’

… is probably the gist.

The game plan is clear. We’ll need two goals and a clean sheet. That’ll make the return leg comfortable, and honestly, for once this season, it’d be nice to just do things the easy way. Don’t get sent off, don’t play headed through balls to the opposition, don’t pass to their strikers, and take your fucking chances.

Last season, Auba missed an absolute sitter in the last minute of extra time, and we limped out of the competition. He really needs to pull out the big guns and give us some of that Auba magic. He’s finding form of late. I loved his goal at the weekend, but we need more of that.

Each game we progress in is another chunk of change that supports a better summer in a pivotal transfer market. I think the semi-finals is more than realistic, and providing we avoid a British team, there’s a good chance we do something interesting. The worry is Spurs or United over two legs. I tend to fancy us in a final.

We have to beat the Greeks though. They’re smashing it in the league this season, sitting pretty at the top by about 400 points, so this is basically a Champions League Group Stage game. It will be a tough game. I think we’ve lost 5 of our last 10 against them. I remember one of their centre backs (Morrocan?), a bald chap, having a worldie against us when they knocked us out of the Champions League way back when. We don’t need any such reruns on Thursday.

Also key for Arsenal… we need to put on a show against Spurs who have their leg as the home fixture. That game always has a residual impact on the mood of the fans. If we win the two games, everyone is happy, we lose, and everyone goes into pitchfork mode which will make it very tough for Arteta in the ground next season.

My view on the manager is this close of season is about fan capital building. If he puts on a good show, snatches some exciting wins, and progresses in the Europa, the atmosphere next season in the ground will be sexier. If we clunk to the end of the season, it’ll be tough for him.

Let’s see what he had this week. One final trophy to player for, let’s make it simple.

Illustrator has finally made my eyes hurt so I decided to have a read. Talking about Sunday’s NLD did anyone hear the Talksport piece confirming Arsenal suffer the most in terms of ‘incorrect’ VAR decisions by 5-1? Manchester United get the best. The word on the street from ex referees and pundits is that we are the “unluckiest” PL team with “VAR decisions”. Unlucky? The absolute nailed on handball at Burnley was not “Unlucky” – it was one of the most blatant examples of a wrong decision you are likely to see. Only Kevin Friend from Leicester, hiding behind the… Read more »

We have some real clueless execs at the club but they’re not clueless enough to sack arteta before next season. The point we all come back to is the individual errors/ref decisions costing us this season. I don’t have the patience to sort through all that. Some blame arteta for these things, others don’t. Either way if u can’t make out its going to take a real bad series of decisions to lead to arteta’s sacking this season you simply have made an enemy of reality. I can’t think of a game where arteta set us up to fail, compared… Read more »

As for where I draw the line in terms of time

The league has already been tanked as have the cups apart from the EL. By any serious metric this has been a dismal season

If he wins the EL then he has truly saved the season and I’d give him another year (with some concerns remaining)

If he doesn’t win the EL then this season has been an like of wank any way you look at it and I’d sack him the day after we’re knocked out

Valentin

Lesauce, You can’t see the difference between taking responsibility for all transfer even the ones he was against it and overruled by Raul and dissing the players. Do you think that Arsenal genuinely went after Mhikitaryan or than we took the deal that ManUtd gave us? No Wenger explicitly wanted Martial and Mourinho wanted him gone but Woodward refused to let him go. Woodward also did not want to part with cash for a player he could have for free six months later. The swap was the way for both party to save face. It turns out to be a… Read more »

Always makes me laugh the way Spurs are almost spoken about favourably in the media. Thirty years since their last FA Cup win, (we won our last one 9 months ago and a tiny minority of fans aren’t happy about that on LG) and 60 years since their last league title. The fact reaching the Carabao Cup final is deemed as a successful season just about sums that club up. Even with VAR on their side this season, they are still nowhere near winning anything actually worth winning.

Mislintat made some very interesting and good points in the new interview But signing Mkhi because he could speak various languages and has talent. More like let ne help out an old buddy. Mislintat, known for his data-driven approach should have known that Mkhi is not suited to Premier league football. Sokratis for 18 mil was not a good deal. Signing a non-ball playing CB, nearing the end of his career for his “leadership qualities”. Dont quite agree with that. Auba, Leno, Mavro and Guendouzi are Sven’s good signings.2 are starters and 2 will most probably be sold for a… Read more »

Zacharse people aren’t worried about martinelli, they’re worried that inferior players who are depreciating assets and a burden on our team are on the pitch regularly whilst he is an outcast

Martinelli has contributed as many decent performances as Willian has this season. How many matches have the two guys played?

you don’t even mention the glaring issue w regards to gabriel. A long term injury. Could wind up being wilshere mach 2. I think that is exactly what arteta wantsa to avoid being aware of gabi’s style which is full forfce non stop

Zacharse Well said. In all the years I have been watching football I have never seen a Manager miss a sitter, misdirect a pass, let in a soft shot or take a foul throw. The problem with the Arteta Out crowd is they are unwilling to look at a result through a fair mind. Instead, everything is the manager’s fault andwhen the side gets a good result it is for some other reason, injuries or the other team being shit, and nothing to do with the Manager. In fact, they dress it up to be in spite of him. Until… Read more »

Afc We don’t really need talksport confirming that we are the worst affected team by Var. Its blatantly clear we always end up at the wrong side of the decisions. Last season we lost about 11+ points due to poor VAR decisions. Few of which I even remember clearly. This season again we are the team most negatively impacted by VAR. Now, I truly believe there is no conspiracy against Arsenal but definitely theres unconscious bias. I read somewhere a high no. of refs in the PL hail from the midlands and Manchester area while there are 0 refs from… Read more »

agreed. I think there’s two issues- some fans see through the lens of the dinosaur days where a career ending tackle wasn’t even carded. Then there’s the media, talksport, roy keane, jaime carragher, just plain clueless analyses buoyed by fans intense reactions to them. as ling as they exude macho ignorance they’ll be taken seriously and can say whatever they want without consequence. When has a subpar post-match analyses led to a sacking?

Uwot?

Ok china you’ve argued your points succinctly & I’ll acknowledge that there has been a lot of head scratching on Artetas team & tactical selections especially when there ARE better options. But as yet I wouldn’t hang a novice manager for that,in his first full season.A bit harsh IMO.Also from your statement you’ve effectively given him one full season( this one) to deliver the goods.Again I find that harsh.Incidentally my brother is in the same camp as you.We debate this endlessly.

AFC Forever

Captain Tierney Unconscious bias maybe but I still think there is more to it. The stats are too high for it to be a coincidence or “unlucky”. Every season we are near the top of the card table but at the bottom of fouls committed because we are given less leeway. However, my point is that referees reflect football support in Britain and for whatever reason, Arsenal are one of the teams people love to hate. I am pleased the Burnley handball decision has been called out as being inexcusable and that people have started to look at the bad… Read more »

But it’s not a glaring issue

Martinelli was cleared for around Christmas and has managed to play a few games and be useful

He isn’t injured now but can’t get anything resembling a chance

This isn’t a player who has had 50 injuries like wilshere or diaby and who is being eased back in carefully. This is a player who has now been fit for ages, his form is at worst useful and he’s being used less than ever.

It’s a very inaccurate comparison

Uwot?

AFC & captain.Spot on.There will be no changes to the PGMOL cartel until they’re held to account.Either by the Media or Prem league.Cannot see either raising these concerns until they themselves are put under pressure.

AFC Forever

Zacharse Agreed. Football analysis is very poor. What annoys me is you watch a game, like the Burnley one, and fans on here are complaining about Saka missing a sitter, Pepe missing one, the handball not being given but once the game is over attack the Manager and then say those things are ‘excuses”. As transparent as cling film. That’s the problem, some people can’t be objective because they don’t want to be, they see the same as us. The same is true of the pundits. One of my friend expected the PGMOL to be sued when they have a penalty for ManUtd after the referee blow the final whistle. Technically this is against the law of the game. I have been told that if a punter had lost his bet because of that final decision then legally he would be entitled for compensation for loss of earning for fraudulent action. I would have love to then be able to depose Mike Riley and force him to admit that yes there is bias in decision. Also like I already mentioned before, corruption is not defined by… Read more »

Most people will gladly overlook the Burnley game if we weren’t 10th in the table.

Burnley wasn’t that bad a performance but if we have to ignore the previous 26 games leaving us miles off in mid table and have to just act like that one unlucky result is the sum of where we are then I think that’s crazy. We’ve played 27 games and we’re in 10th…

AFC Forever

Uwot? PGMOL has never been accountable. When their former head honcho criticised Riley’s leadership and the appointment of referees, they closed rank. The lack of accountability is the problem. For example, a few weeks ago Mike Dean, possibly the most incompetent of a poor bunch, made two bad decisions – despite reviewing them on the pitchside monitor. Despite these clear errors that suggested he didn’t understand football or the rules, he still received his usual quota of games; he chose to take a week off himself because he had received death threats. AFC that’s the first time I’ve seen a yellow and red card proposal for refs and a relegation promotion plan

And it’s actually genius. Love it

China1

Tho as much as there is an anti arsenal bias, you really must understand none of the officials are actually capable of refereeing football anyway in terms of ability

Even when they get VAR right they usually take 3 minutes watching slow motion reruns from 12 different angles to reach a decision that your average fan watching on TV conclusively reached after just 3 replays in 20 seconds

The officials are corrupt but just as bad they are entirely hopeless professionals

If this team is progressing at 10th, emery must have been a world class manager to get us to 5th and an EL final. Arteta needs time to improve, I can give him that much but what I won’t accept is that at the beginning of the season, the expectation was to fight for top 4 but now 10th is the new top 4. Taking bad fortunes into account, we should at the very least be competing for top 6 given the quality of players we have. It wasn’t just Burnley, that was the point. The Radio was talking about all our games this season and the fact that we had a negative of 5-1 in VAR errors to correct results. In other words 5 wrong decisions to every 1 good one. They cited a number of games, including the ones mentioned Villa, Wolves, Leicester, Burnley – there were others where they found Arsenal had been wrongly dealt with by VAR. The one they found that positively favoured Arsenal correctly, was the Smith Rowe red card that VAR overturned.

China1

If you asked your typical PL ref to watch Star Wars and tell you who like sky walkers dad was after, they’d get to the end then rewind back to the start and watch it all over again before giving an answer

And you’d be just as likely to hear Han Solo as the answer 4 hours later

SpanishDave

Why should Arteta get time.
He’s got no experience, no history totally unproven.
Why should the club gamble next season and end up again in this position?
We are just treading water going nowhere.
His downfall is the way he has not moved on Xhaka when he had the chance, then gave Willian a massive wage and a three year contract to put him in front of the clubs talented youth.
His experience is seeing Pep buying his way to titles, so that’s his route

I think it’s fair to say that if a club has qualified for the champions league it is more difficult to rotate the squad than being in the europa league.. Over the past 4 seasons , Arsenal have not had the problem of managing the squad in the champions league , we have been able to play our 2nd string in the Europa and qualified for the knock out stages comfortably. The interview highlighted that Sven didn’t have the sun shining out his arse as some would have us believe, he is human after all and prone to errors in judgment
Having said that, he is more qualified for the rebuild job at Arsenal and it would’ve served us better to have him here with Edu working under him.

salparadisenyc

Sven fit the project for me, long term burn. Club ended up going short term thinking with Raul and spunked a shed load that could of utilised better. And here we are.

Nelson

I have watched two West Brom games where AMN was featured in the midfield. I still like AMN’s sudden sprint to break up a play or to recover the game defensively. For me, he is better suited to play right back or right wing. Maybe he can improve as a midfielder. Currently, his football IQ is not mature enough to play the midfield effectively. He can only make some simple passes.

Zacharse Arsenal have rebuilt for the past four seasons and we’ve been very active in each transfer window. The difference is incompetence on all levels haven’t made us see any tangible results from our so called rebuild. Exactly the point Sal

What were witnessing right now are fruits of poor decisions for the past few years. This only points at leadership failure as coaching alone is not enough to bring us back to the top
Wenger was the leader and everyone else hid under him. When he left, it has now been very clear that the Kroenkes, Gazidis, Raul and now Vinai are all bums and are not fit to lead ARSENAL to the top. We need to go back to the drawing board else we’ll keep wasting money that isn’t even enough for the rebuild

Captain Tierney Edu isn’t bad, at least the results prove it. Just like Arteta, he is quite good but still a rookie and he would do better working together with a more experienced hand. I don’t get the Edu hate. What he’s done so far has been decent.
I see us doing a lot of business this summer. I’d be spending the bulk of our money on the midfield. An upgrade on Xhaka and a replacement for Elneny who I’d sell due to him being just not good enough.
I don’t see Torriera coming back. Don’t think he ever really settled in Britain. I like Guendouzi but his attitude has to change.

Kroenkephobe

Nelson The other rather significant problem with AMN is that he won’t play where the management wants him to. If he’d taken Tets’s lead and committed himself to playing and developing at RB, I’m pretty certain he wouldn’t be chez Allardyce now and would still be with us or at a better club than wba. Var officials act like every incident has an explicitly right or wrong outcome when a solid fraction of all the ones raised to them are quite blatantly contentious and open to interpretation

That officials then spend 3 minutes putting frame by frame looking for objective answers to a question that is very obviously subjective in many cases is a complete blight on VAR and football. In other words zero common sense

There should also be a limit on how many replays a ref can watch If you can’t reach a decision in 20 seconds you can’t reach a decision full stop and the original should stand It’s the law of diminishing returns where watching one replay is good, two is better, three is typically more than sufficient. But when they’re watching 5,6,10 times frame by frame they’re seeing absolutely nothing at all that we all didn’t see by the second or at worst third replay It’s either clear or it’s not.
