EDU BODYSLAMS THE TRANSFER WINDOW

by .

Wooooaaaahhhh… did I wake up FRESH from the news. I could run a marathon. I could climb a mountain. My head is so clear now Mustafi is gone I think I’m going to apply for a job at SpaceX on the rocket science team.

The German World Cup winner held us back in life, now he’s gone. Good riddance. No sentimentality here. He was a terrible, terrible signing and I am here, with you, thanking the footballing gods for lifting him from the club.

I always thought he was just a nightmare center-back, but when the rumblings came my way that he was difficult behind the scenes, it was time to exit.

Thoughts and prayers for Schalke… Christian Gross as their new manager, Kolasinac as their captain, Mustafi as their defensive rock… could you imagine a worse film poster?

So, how did we finish the window? About £600k a week better off. That’s how you do ruthless business in a pandemic.

The absolute key is to NOT put that money into a bunch of bums Kia knows this summer.

This is a semi-fresh start, obviously slightly tainted by the fact we forked out a lot of money on certain players this summer that will not provide long-term value. Those decisions were made, we now have to lie with them on a bed of nails.

We’ve cleared out underperformers on the pitch, we rid the dressing room of players that were less than helpful, and we’ve freed up cash flow so we can move for the players we want this summer.

We also did a pretty decent job of looking after the future.

Joe Willock has gone to Newcastle to help Steve Bruce out with his team’s appalling final ball. I think he’s had a bit of an identity crisis, everyone knows there’s a player there, no one knows what that player is. He couldn’t be going to a club more desperate for a spark, so let’s see what he has.

AMN, as I suspected, took a loan move to West Brom. He had 5 offers apparently. What is pointed is the fact he binned off bigger clubs. His loan move isn’t about his lack of talent, it’s about scratching a very specific itch… he wants to show Edu and Arteta he can be a midfielder at the highest level. The player is coming back to us next season, if he wasn’t, I suspect he might have tried to impress at Southampton or Leicester. What better way to show you are top tier than keeping West Brom in the Premier League? Last player to go to West Brom from Arsenal was Serge G… let’s feed AMN the same water and keep em’ crossed.

We’ve gone over the William Saliba stuff. He’s in the right place. @GrimandiTweetss, a guy who actually watches him, had this to say on where he’s at development wise (referencing his error this weekend that cost Nice the game).

As I’ve been watching him at Nice, it’s apparent his one glaring deficiency is his lack of ability to defend the high cross

His shape is often wrong, that’s why it skimmed off his head and they score

It’s not just a matter of getting games, it’s a matter of releasing the skill of defending crosses. For such a big chap, he doesn’t impose himself defending crosses in open play or at set-pieces

Half a season in France isn’t as ideal as half a season in Championship would have been, but you know what, it’s a helluva lot better than sitting on the bench.

There were some other moves. Matt Smith moved to Charlton for the remainder of the season, Swindon fans were absolutely feeeewming over this, which is great news.

I was a bit disappointed that Reiss Nelson managed to avoid a loan move again, a move to Valencia collapsed. It kind of looks like he’s blown a year on his own terms. He should have taken a loan in the Premier League. Now he’s cratered his value and no one really knows what he’s capable of. Not the sharpest advice he’s taking.

This summer is going to very interesting. Arsenal are going to be making big plans again. They’ll likely be looking to add another creative player, but the most important position they’ll address is central midfield. I think everyone is very aware of the limitations we have in midfield right now and they’ll be looking at top class options to play next to Thomas Partey. It’ll all depend on what we can do in terms of sales. Lucas Torreira and Matteo G will be high on the exit list. I suspect we’ll also be looking to whip up interest in players coming to the end of their deals, or, players that just need to find new clubs because they aren’t quite right for the future.

If we can bring in £80m, expect us to drop another Thomas Partey like move on the market and plug some gaps that are clear. Could be interesting. I just hope Edu isn’t ready with his mega contracts for older players… he needs to move on names that aren’t part of the 5-year plan and continue to trim that wage bill.

The Swiss Ramble ran the numbers that basically showed we’ve dropped £236m of wastage on talent over the last 10 years.

Our new strategy needs to start refocusing on how we have a consistent flow of transfer cash coming through the door. 26 should be the max-out age of players we sign. Really, 22-23 is the sweet spot. You can mold the players in your vision, you know they’ll only be thinking about football, and they’ll be at wage pricepoint that means you can easily sell them.

The hope is Edu and Arteta have learned the harshest of lessons this season. This window indicates that maybe that’s the truth. Youth is the way forward, there are no shortcuts to the top, if we start acknowledging that now, we’ll move forward as a club… if we don’t, we’re just burning more cash on an idea that has failed for 5 years.

Edu has done a very good job this window, but we do need to be careful that we don’t celebrate table stakes like we’re rocking the world of football innovation. De-bloating the squad, signing young talent on loan, and moving out young players to gain more experience is sharp… but we can’t forget what went before. The truth will arrive in the summer. Contracts, new signings, how we sell… BUT… this is a great start to the first non-Raul window. So praise and credit are due.

Right, Wolves tonight. We need 3 points. Auba, Saka, Mari, and Ceballos are all in contention. We might see Odegaard as well. It’s a huge game, Nuno really hasn’t managed to get his side into gear this season, but… we are always a gift to struggling managers, so who knows what will happen.

Play like we did against United and we’ll be in with a good chance of coming away with the points.

Is this the part where we blame the ref for this amateurish half hour of football?

GunnerWomble

If he’d gone for it with his feet or head and missed and collided with the striker he would probably have just got a yellow!

Lacaqualidie

No. No. No. I’ve just got another beer and Leno is off. Game over, man, game over.

Matt

So arsenal.

Zfree

Why isn’t mat Ryan on the bench? How is runnarson anywhere near the first team?

Useroz

Draw would be a kinda miracle

I really do hope it’s last we’ve seen of luiz in an Arsenal shirt. Penalty and red might be harsh tonight, but fact is he is a clusterfuck waiting to happen. In the last 2 years, how many points as he cost us.

SpanishDave

Another record for Arteta.
Double by Wolves.
It always happens to us, nobody else

Winthorpe

Poor Arteta
I really feel sorry for him

Leno homeland is prone to gaffes
He’s been very good this season bar the first 8 games

Runnarson on for Partey

It’s over

MD-Gunner

Ia that AFC playing or some street gang on the field. AFC has done from good to bad to ridiculous. Good Bye and farewell to this game.

Zimmie2652

Well, the wheels came off this bus.

Time Up

Now is all about 44 systems lol

Jaffa

Oh fuck the goalie doesn’t look confident does he

Left Testicle

SAGG,
You’re clutching at straws.

MuddyGooner

At last we get to see Runnerson in the PL.
🤦‍♂️ FFS

Elmo

That’s realistically the end of our top 6 hopes. We’ll either have to win the EL, or hope 7th qualifies (if FA and league cups both won by already qualified teams).

Vickingz

Can’t remember when these senior players stood up to be counted when it really mattered. What was leno thinking? He misjudged the trajectory of the ball? He should have just allowed a goal.

S Asoa

Somebody was asking at the start why our new GK was not on the bench !
Looks like Arteta smart ass politics has come to bite him in the arse

GunnerWomble

Down to 9 men and Partey off instead of the slower/less mobile Xhaka!

Soham

For how many games will Leno be out ?

Sly

Lol

Time Up

Goodbye top 4, keep our hope in the hard route EL

Useroz

Auba looks angry…. so should the other players

Marc

Dave

With the fixtures we’ve got coming up you can see us going on another run – just not the one we want.

How long is Matt Ryan injured for?

Vickingz

Has auba attacked with the ball yet??

Habesha Gooner

Just defend the rest of the game and wait if we ever will get a corner.

MLC

Season is over

IQ

This shows the folly of letting AMN go. He had Traore in his pocket when he played. Soares can’t cope.

Radio Raheem

When it rains it pours.

MuddyGooner

Just curious but is Matt Ryan’s real name Kim Kallstrom ?

Dissenter

The Auba sub was dim too
The lad has no fight in him
Now it’s 7 outfield players +finisher + Runnar VS Wolves

DM

Ryan (new GK) has an injury, hence Runarsson..

Jim+furnell

Waiting for the Monty Python theme to play at the end of this. John Cleese in goal anyeay.

Habesha Gooner

Subbing on auba wasn’t a good decision.

SpanishDave

Who’s in goal for our next match!
Ryan is injured ffs

roaaary

Bellerin is so bad. That guy just walked past him

Jamie

Marc disappears, we start getting results.

Marc reappears, we embarrass ourselves.

I’m not saying there’s a correlation, but there’s definitely a correlation.

TheLegendaryDB10

S Asoa

Matt Ryan has a slight injury on the right hip. No politics thete.

MidwestGun

Shit Refereeing, Luiz, missed chances, wonder strike, Brain cramps… 9 men… throw it all in a pot and stir.

andy1886

Luiz unlucky but should know better. Leno – stupid.

One chance, long ball out for Auba to get behind them.

Time Up

Only one game for Leno as it’s not violent play.

Useroz

Runnaboy saved two shots…..may be one of his better days

Vickingz

Senior players’ decision making is as bad as arteta’s

Soham

We love signing old players and injured players !

Marc

How many matches will Leno be banned for?

Dissenter

For how many games will Leno be out

One game
It’s not like he spit or head butted someone

SAGG

Left Testicle

It was a Leno mistake, but it is never a red, there wasnt a clear goal. chance.

Radio Raheem

Top 4?? Hahaha we were never in the running for that. What have you been smoking?

We can still finish top 8.

Useroz

…and people trying to smear Saliba before he practically plays for us??

Ernest Reed

So we know that Luiz is gone for three, but in retrospect it likely will be overturned, but no excuse for Leno and very costly for big games coming up. Hopefully Ryan is ready to go because otherwise any real hope of finishing near a Europa spot is in dire jeopardy.

Gazzap

The partey sub you feel is more about wanting to be at full strength for Saturday. Arteta knows this is done. No point running partey into the ground tonight.

SpanishDave

VAR officials try everything to bring us down. How was going towards the corner flag a goal scoring opportunity?

TheLegendaryDB10

Marc

Matt Ryan injury is not that badly injured according to Arsenal.com.

He will be back very soon.

Mark

How can anybody justify taking off Partey and leaving Xhaka on ??

It’s these kind of decisions that show he just plays favourites, no matter what’s happening.

Time Up

Vila are licking their lips with Run in goal.

Dissenter

We are still the team to face when you’re seeking to rebound from a poor run

Marc

Everton and Villa with 3 games in hand after tonight and the Spud’s 2.

Fucking up the FA Cup was piss poor by Arteta.

LeMassiveCoq

@Lacaqulidae. ‘Game over man, game over’

Aliens?

🙂

Ernest Reed

Going to be very interesting to hear Arteta’s words. I cant possibly see how the officiating can escape his wrath?

Samir

Fuck the europa league places.

We need to go all out for the EL.

Benjamin

Arteta sucrificed FA cup for what? 4 place? Arsenal under Arteta wont finish higher than 8, ever.

Victorious

That’s the season done for us!

Samir

People blaming Arteta is just boring.

Time Up

How’s Auba our captain and can’t even control 5 yards pass????.

Marc

DB10

Well that at least that will give us options.

Foxy

Before all us arm chair critics get too worked up about the Luiz and Leno incidents we have to realise how heavy it is raining out there and probably windy as well

Winthorpe

The Auba sub was dim too
The lad has no fight in him
Now it’s 7 outfield players +finisher + Runnar VS Wolves

Dissenter

Exactly this. Auba is a good time guy. He’s fine when you’re winning and the going is good
He’s not your back to wall, grab the game by the scruff of the neck type of guy

karim

2 shots on the woodwork
A quality goal ruled out
A comical pen conceded, let alone the red card, ten seconds after the end of additional time.
A goal from out of this world 30 secs after the restart
Leno’s comedy gold moment.

Are the Gods of football on the sauce ?

Habesha Gooner

I still think Europa league is attainable. Our quality will shine through if we keep playing like the first half. This game will happen once in a million years.

Majesticgooner

Arteta should not have taken off pepe, for some reason pepe off gave traore licence to attack, and auba is not as good as pepe on winning possession.

Gazzap

Is this the first time 2 players have been sent off with neither player having had made a foul in the match?

Mark

Gutting. I had a feeling those chances we didn’t take would come back to bite us.

Marc

“This game will happen once in a million years.”

Or 17 times a season if you have Arteta in charge!

MilanøGunner

Partey has only 1 full 90 minutes since return from injury, I dont mind him being taken off when we are down to 9

Dissenter

Leno’s error >>>>>whatever Luiz may have done

Leno should apologize to his team mates, his manager, the fan base and the United Nations after the final whistle

You don’t see that often
May have to wait for another 10 years to see another shocker like that

Ernest Reed

Sadly the lack of awareness and self discipline has reared its ugly head again. Right or wrong, they don’t make it easy on themselves.

andy1886

Amazing stat:

“Arsenal have received nine Premier League red cards under Mikel Arteta. No other club has had more than three PL sendings off since Arteta took charge of his first match at the Gunners (from Boxing Day 2019 onwards).”

SAGG

Spanish Dave

That is exactly what I think, it. is not a goal chance, so it is never a Red.

MidwestGun

Gods of football hate us Karim.. All I can figure.. You really couldn’t write this as a movie script they would be like nah.. too fake. Disgusting,

LeMassiveCoq

Anyone blaming Arteta for this is an idiot.
We were purring in the first 46.9 minutes. Then Luiz is unlucky and our super reliable keeper has a rush of shit to the brain.
How the fuck is that Artetas fault?

Danny

Leno out for 3 games, Ryan injured, so who’s are 4th goalkeeper? Can we get Lehmann again like in 2011?

Ernest Reed

Ryan is injured, Danny?

SpanishDave

Playing slow build up football in this situation is madness go for it ffs

Thorough

Luiz = Dumb Leno = Dumber Somebody should put a wager on Xhaka collecting a red card next. How people can prefer old heads whom have dissapointed over and again over young up and comers like Saliba and Guendozi I don’t understand. When we went nearly 20 games with Martinez and everybody praised him it wasn’t because he’s impossible to breach, it was because of the calmness he instilled in the defence, you hardly can catch him making rash, unforced errors. Leno does that every 10 games. It’s like he tries to remind us ‘I can be shit no matter… Read more »

Danny

How the fuck is that Artetas fault?
——————-
This one’s totally on the players not him.

Habesha Gooner

Everyone should attack. Total football is the only way to get something out of this. Everyone making attacking runs.

Victorious

Only arsenal can manage such bottle job! Rival fans taking the piss now

Season over the moment Luiz was sent off.. Just few seconds to HT

Gazzap

I think we need to stick the ball in the box. I’m surprised we’re trying to out pass wolves like that.

MilanøGunner

Leno should be out for only 1 game right?

Winthorpe

FoxyFebruary 2, 2021 19:44:32 Before all us arm chair critics get too worked up about the Luiz and Leno incidents we have to realise how heavy it is raining out there and probably windy as well Foxy What does this mean? Nobody slipped. Leno had a decision to make and he made the worst 1 of 4 available 1) read the fucking bounce 2) ok you’ve misread it, keep your hands down and try to take it on the stomach groin first and then get it away with feet, the striker may get it but it’s better than getting sent… Read more »

This game was made for AMN at left back to handle Traore as Cedric has struggled or at least offer more than Bellerins limp display . Strangely he seems to prefer to be a midfielder in a championship level club than a first choice RB for Arsenal.

Victorious

Wolves effectively just destroyed any little joy left to savor this season

How shit was the ref tho? Total wanker

karim

Mid

Sad but so freaking true. We usually do it to ourselves but tonight is quite unbelievable

MD-Gunner

Points from games against Villa & Leeds =0- New table place bottom half. What hubris in this blog and comments AFC up the table. Someone said AM coming in check, on the bench because I can’t see it on the field.

I am so fucking pissed off, it’s unreal. That game put me in a mood…..

Gazzap

Does Boly block that Auba shot with his arm? Looks a handball to me.

andy1886

Just one game ban for Leno, it’s a professional foul not violent conduct or anything.

Mb

And with this, season ends.

Winthorpe

It’s always the senior players that let us down

Auba, Luiz, Willian, leno, bellerin.
