SEASON DEFINING GAME AWAITS, DO ARSENAL HAVE THE SAUCE?

by .

Arsenal takes on United in a huge game that is going to go some way to deciding the fates of both teams this season.

If United win, they’re in the title race, and this will be a big moment for them after their dismal loss to Sheffield United in the week.

If Arsenal wins, it’ll cement us as contenders for Europe. Beating Southampton was massive, but it means very little without beating United. This match also sets the tone for a very rough run of games. Leeds, Wolves, Villa, Leicester and City will define if we make the top 6. I feel more confident than I did a few weeks ago, but let’s be real, this season has been very, very hard to predict, so who knows what is coming.

The only thing we can control is how we play.

The squad is in very good shape at the moment. Big players are back in the side. Arteta has found a formula that allows us to attack with swagger without opening ourselves up to decimation. We’ve moved away from the grey clouds that have been dampening our season.

The last time we played United it was a drab affair. Arteta was high off ‘fine margins’ and we shithoused OGS with a tactical masterclass. We didn’t really create much though. The game was won on a penalty, then it all went to hell for us after.

I think the game this weekend will be different. United might have been taught a lesson by Sheff U, but make no mistake, they’ll come firing on all cylinders against us. They have a dreamy selection of attacking players to choose from. Paul Pogba is in form, Rashford, Martial, and Fernandes are always a nightmare to deal with. If we leave ourselves open, they will punish us.

The main difference this time around is we’ll have a fitter Thomas Partey available (prays). That gives us a world-class platform to build an attack from. Last time around, we used Mo Elneney to great tactical effect. Will he be used again to keep some of United’s more vibrant players quiet? Partey’s partner is going to be key.

Attack wise, we now have a plethora of talent to choose from.

If that above picture didn’t turn you on in a footballistic sense, then you are the problem.

I don’t know if Auba is going to be ready for Sunday, regardless, we have great options. ESR, Saka and Gabriel M should start. That’s a wave of energy most clubs aren’t used to seeing from Arsenal. We should really be getting at the United centre backs by stretching them with pace and fast passing.

Defensively, I’m not sure how we’ll line up. Who is our starting centre back partnership? David Luiz dropped 3 howlers in the last game and he’s not built for pacey players. Gabriel has been shaky and hasn’t landed a lot of minutes. Pablo Mari has been out. It’ll be a big decision as to who players. Hopefully, Tierney is fit, that gives is more pace, and great delivery. I’m not sure I’d fancy Cedric at leftback, regardless of his great form.

This is going to be an exciting runout. It’s a huge game for the Arteta project. The good news is we’re going into this game with a bit more confidence. There’s still something to play for. Let’s see what we have.

Finally, before I go, let’s ask how Spurs fans are feeling about Jose as their head coach?

I said last year Arsenal fans would be happier come February than Spurs fans.

Was I right? I think so. My Spurs pal messaged me this.

‘If I win the euro millions I’ll donate the lot to sacking him and his backroom team. You just know he’s going to win the Coca  Carabao league cup thing and bag himself another year. And I will take no pleasure in that.’

3 attempts at Liverpool’s goal last night. His title-winning attempt this year has landed him… 3 points ahead of our total novice overseeing a shit show of a season with a far lesser squad of players.

Whose fans are more excited right now? Which vision of football do you prefer? Would ANYONE prefer Jose in the dugout earning £15m a year complaining how shit his players are?

I did not think so.

Plenty of work to be done at Arsenal, but we’re on a better track than Spurs.

See you in the comments and please, do tell me some more about how ‘elite’ Jose still is.

P.S. CLICK THIS VIDEO BELOW. I spoke to Haider and Ciaran about the United game. Two top United fans doing Youtube video RIGHT. Enjoy… leave a little thumbs up on the video.

“Q. Is it an opinion to state that anybody with an once of intelligence, common sense, compassion and empathy could have done a better job than Trump at being US President? Some would say that’s not an opinion, it’s a FACT.“

Considering some 40% of republicans believe Trump was the best president ever they might contest your facts, Graham.
These are the same people, however ,who believe that Trump “drained the swamp”, even though 4 times more lobbyists worked in his government than in Obama’s during his eight years in office, and lobbying firms’ revenues skyrocketed in Trump’s years.

Ødegaard has been with us 5inutes, would you seriously expect him to start?

Even if ESR is injured I would expect Ødegaard to start. His only role this week would be sub for 20 minutes.

Bojanglesi

*wouldn’t expect him to start.

Arsenal Vs Tottenham 2010 on Sky.

What a player Nasri was. I forgot Gallas played for Chelsea, Arsenal and the spuds.

Chamakh still looks shit.

Denilson and Song holding midfield together.

Sagna good defender non-existent going forward.

andy1886

Radio, Nasri had a good six months and then pissed off to City. Prior to that he had his moments but was inconsistent. Bit of a tosser by all accounts. As for Gallas I wish I could forget that he played for us. Five million plus Gallas for Cole was absolute robbery. Rivals some of our recent deals (Pepe, Willian) for one of the worst.

The picture of the youth brigade needed to include Balogun….

Odds are on for a draw though

Bojanglesi “I’ve been listening to a couple of guys on YouTube (one a Norwegian who reports on football in Spain, the other, an ex Arsenal player living in Spain.) Both claim Ødegaard is excellent defensively.” I heard that too. Very weird behaviour to slag off a new signing before he’s even kicked a ball. There has been too much negativity about him on here, why not watch him first and then pass judgement? He seems a great addition but his appearances will prove that. In 2019 he began what was supposed to be a two-year stay at Real Sociedad. Madrid… Read more »

According to Ornstein, Soton want AMN on loan

If this loan is being seriously considered, I would hope we are loaning in a cover for lb. With AMN out we only have 3 full backs.

AFC Forever

Bojanglesi

Mari can play there and Chambers is back too.

Defensively we have 8:

Bellerin
Holding
Gabriel
Tierney
Mari
Chambers
Cedric
Luiz

Andy1886

Of course Mustafi can play full back. Just saying… 😮

Bojanglesi

AFC

Yeah, I’m not too keen on depending on players that “can” play in a position. Having said that AMN is a player that can play rb/lb though not a specialist in either position.

I would prefer that we loan in a lb to cover Tierney, put it that way. I think if the opportunity presents itself we will do that. There’s still a couple of days left in this window and wouldn’t be the first time Arsenal have done business on the final day.

Bojanglesi

Andy

I would love Mustafi playing full back providing it’s with another club… Liverpool?

La croqueta

Utd fan said. You know the difference between Arsenal and utd these days. Its mentality. We’re both far from where we was. We could both Argue and banter each other about a million things that has happened over the years. But utd would never take luiz, ceballos and now Odegaard on loans. Big clubs don’t scrummage around in the loan bins. The odd one here and there (tevez). Mabey An established player who is out of favour somewhere sure. But to take a rivals 21,22,23,24 year old on loan. To train them, promote them, increase their profiles and value. All… Read more »

Cezan Patel

Anybidy else notice Arteta playing ganes with the referees already ? Talking about how VAR has taken the passion out of araenal vs utd… me thinks hes hoping utd dont get one of their trademark penalties tomorrow

grooveydaddy

We’ve already played Soton twice. Why not help them take points off other rivals?

Also, would probably be the better move for increasing his value, if that’s what we’re looking to do.

Tony

Looks like Arteta has a full squad barring Auba if the press reports are to be believed. I believe Arteta has the players not to lose to Man U today. It will be all down to tactics, player selection and in-game management. 3 things that are not Arteta’s strong suit except where he has been forced into player selections through injury or suspensions. This situation also dictates tactics and in-game management. Arteta could begin to win fans back over today with a win or a hard fought draw that would set the scene/mentality for the next 6 games. Will the… Read more »

This is the type of game Diet Pep sets up extra defensively, problem is Auba is absent to strike on the counter.

Sid

If man u score 1st its unlikely we make a come back and if we do NO more calling him ‘diet pep’ atleast for 2 weeks.

HerbsArmy

Huge test of character for Arteta and Arsenal.
Every game is a must-win, but I would say this is more of a must-not-lose because of the momentum built up from the Chelsea win.
I always want to beat United, could live with a draw, but any loss would be depressing, especially against Solksjaer.

China1

La croqueta when I look at arsenal I see reality because unlike said Utd fans I’m not completely deluded Utd don’t do many loans because they have cash coming out of every part of the club which they choose (often very poorly) to blow on big name expensive signings Arsenal do loans because we don’t have the money to buy any more 70m players. I thought that was patently obvious? Utd have been co side ring going in for San go in the 100m mark which is likely more than 2x our entire transfer budget for the summer on a… Read more »

Vickingz

Expect our CBs to be caught up the field leaving spaces for man utd attackers to run behind and cause us some trouble. It’s really a problem that none of our CBs has pace in his legs

Bojanglesi

Tony

“It will be all down to tactics, player selection and in-game management.

3 things that are not Arteta’s strong suit”

Disagree with you on the tactics mate. He has Ole beat tactically

RockyRoe

What’s important in the team selection today is to select Cedric in place of bellerin as rb, if KT is fit.

Cedric has been very good last 2 games he started for us and it is important for the players to see clearly that form and work ethic trumps old chums team selection policy.

Bellerin needs to feel genuine competition for his place if he had to improve. He has been stagnant, possibly regressing the last 2 seasons.

Bojanglesi

Viking

It’s not just about pace. Positioning is just as important

Bojanglesi

Rocky

Agree with about Cedric playing but he has had 2 good games in the past 3, his game against Soton in the cup was pretty ordinary.

Bojanglesi

Tierney, Thomas and ESR are available for selection v un**ed.

Tony

“Disagree with you on the tactics mate. He has Ole beat tactically”

Winning by a penalty is handing OGS his tactical arse?

Then blowing numerous games thereafter through poor tactics, team selections and rubbish in-game management dropping us to our worst placing.

Yep, Arteta is a tactical genius with us struggling in mid table and United playing to go top.

Let’s see how this plays out Bojangles.

Bojanglesi

Some un**ed fans are not happy with Maguire. Apparently after the game he went online to post his stats for the match. Seemed to be saying, look I did my job. Not good optics from the captain

Hopefully, it caused some discontent in the dressing room.

TeeCee

The problem is, Arteta is just as likely to pick a front 3 of Laca, Pepe and Willian for the experience, Xhaka and Elneny in midfield and Luiz and Bellend in defence again and we’ll be stuffed!! I’d like to think he’ll go for youth but this is Arteta, he’s incapable, in many ways. If he had even a drop of sauce his team would be
…………………………Leno………………………
Cedric……Holding………..Gabriel………..KT
………………………..Partey……………………
Saka…………………..ESR………..Martinelli
…………………………Laca………………………….

Bojanglesi

Tony

Never mentioned genius anywhere.

I think un**ed have have a bit of good fortune this season, they’re in a false position in the league.

I haven’t made a prediction in our games since the Emery days, so won’t begin now but I’m feeling a bit confident about tonight.

Graham62

Cedric has to play ahead of Bellerin.

It’s a no brainer.

Graham62

Tom

This may be true but we all know these 40% are insular ignorant human beings.

Gonsterous

Big game tonight, we need to get 3 points to get top 4. That should be our aim because it’s still possible. We will drop points as will other teams but dropping points to teams above us, will have dire consequences.

Switch martin Odegaard for KT and I would have jizzed my pants, not to mention Leno, TP, Gabriel, and Auba and we have a very strong squad when on form.

Pepe, the jury is still out, I’m a fan of him, but he needs to prove a lot of people wrong

Graham62

Tom

Agree 100% with your opinions on Jose Mourinho.

Muppetman

Teecee at least Arteta knows you can pick pick 11 players…..

Kenyangunner

Xhaka , Pepe , AMN and Mustafi are the most often mentioned players on this blog.

Why are we giving Mustafi to Liverpool for free? I mean, they are desperare for a defender, then we can MAKE A SALE. We spent millions on “OUT OF FAVOUR” Ceballos for 2 seasons. We spent millions to bring OUT OF FAVOUR Odegaard for SIX MONTHS!!! Both of them without option to buy. We spent millions on OUT OF. I fancy at least a draw tonight.

I know MU’s away form is phenomenal and that they’ll be smarting after losing to SU but I reckon we can still get something from the game.

2-2 or 2-1 win.

Buzzy

Arteta is 100% going with a 3 at the back to block their wings right in the mid. Same strategy that he used at OT. If we’re playing 4 at the back, then get ready for a looooong night. They have serious pace on the counters.

Chris

I get the feeling that Arteta will select Pepe if he is fit.

Sometimes all it takes is a goal and a decent performance to get a players confidence going and he looked perked up during the week. He also scored in the corresponding fixture last season.

Martinelli may be useful to bring on for his energy late in the game if this is how it goes.

Foxy

I will be really worried if Bellerin is at RB as he will get skinned by Rashford that is if he is actually in position in the first place. Cedric would be better but in an ideal world an in form AMN would be best due to his greater strength.

Up 4 grabs now

Morning, game day against united and feeling quite confident for once. United need to not lose today for a club record. Since they bribed Mike Riley all those years ago to stop the invicibles hitting fifty, nothing would give me more pleasure than turning them over today. I do think we need to go for the slightly cautious approach though. No gung ho football unless we’re losing with 20 minutes to go. Would rather see big mo and Thomas in the middle despite xhaka having a couple of above average games, you know he’s getting ready to drop a usual… Read more »

Tony

We turned them over at OT albeit not comprehensively but enough to leave MU players with some doubt/confidence going into the game. We also been through a steep and painful learning curve – the type that makes you stronger from the survival fight. We’re older, wiser and more confident with more collective belief in each other on the pitch. To win we need to u up another gear with the tempo of our game and show Maguire up for what he is; bang average. Arteta has all the tools in good working order to craft a win at home today.… Read more »

Pedro Things are definitely looking up. I was clinging on there with Arteta for a while, but he’s starting to show some nouse. 3-2 arsenal for me. Also, you’re quite right about Mourihno. He’ll always divide opinion and yes, he’ can get a job done , but even when you look at his successful tenures at chelsea, inter and madrid- playing deathly dull, percentage football with squads made up of the very best money can buy, and consistently disregarding the ‘omerta’ rule of never criticising players or your employers in public, makes him an overrated, nasty little prick. Its their fucking sense of entitlement that Ferguson bought and it hasnt left. They werent always cunty, I think they got relegated in 1974. Today is a reality check of Arteta’s system assuming that we can field Tierney. Partey, Martinelli and ESR. I prefer Martinelli’s work rate than Pepe’s unpredictability. It may also come down to game management depending on whether we are leading or trailing with 25 mins to go.

Of all the managers with an elite pedigree of trophies at top clubs, Mourinho might be the only one I would flat out refuse to have come to Arsenal. I don’t care how much Amazon sanitized him in their documentary, he’s as toxic as they come and just watch his behaviour spiral now Kane is out.

bacaryisgod

Rich

Not sure if you remember, but Bale went winless in his first 24 games for Tottenham. This is such a dodgy statistic because it doesn’t account for a multitude of factors. .

The other player to watch out for is Pepe who played every minute of the matches on the 23rd and 26th. I can see him on the bench for this game.

Interesting to find out what teams he did and did not start against.

Rich that’s a really meaningless stat. Games are won by teams not individuals. As has been said there are a dozen or more factors that determine how results go. Arsenal have been trash during the whole period that mustafi has been here and any stat that implies he’s a major positive difference maker is purely coincidental because we’ve all been watching and seen how poor he has been on so many many occasions. A better question would be how would you rate all our CBs over that period? I’d be surprised if anyone even put him as high as our… Read more »

China1

It’s actually a disgrace that he has nearly got 100 appearances with the levels he has regularly showed.

It’s a testament to how poor arsenal has been run to give him this platform, especially considering we paid 35m up front for the privilege and high wages to boot

Him, xhaka, Willian, Pepe, mikki, ozil, the lot of them are just horrific wastage personified

Jamie

Glad there’s been some pushback on that meaningless Musti stat.

Northbanker

I really hope we don’t play Pepe. Yes he played better but holds on to the ball too long. Also I lost count of how many times in that Southampton game he was ball watching from a distance and barely got involved.

Bojanglesi

The only stats I find have any meaning for me is win, lose and draw.

Rich

My opinion of Mustafi is, 90% of what he does is really good

But he’s got the attention span of a goldfish, his brain farts are far too regular, and he goes to ground too often

He lacks anything resembling composure, once he’s made one mistake, he has the capacity to turn into a mental wreck

£35million poorly spent

Felt a bit sorry for him though, he’s not good enough, but some of the abuse levelled at him has been vile

AFC Little between the teams .. I’m hoping that OGS leaves Cavani, Mctominay and shaw on the bench . Mctominay gives them more bite in the middle, Cavani is a proper striker and shaw gives them better balance.. For Arsenal, we are looking like a decent well balanced side. Has to be 4-2-3-1.. Northbanker Mustafi can go from playing like prime Sol Campbell, into resembling Andre Santos at his worst, in the blink of an eye A lot of what Mustafi does is very good, and the statistics back this up. It’s his lack of concentration and composure that inhibit him from progressing into a very good centre half Which are two essential traits required at the highest level Hopefully we move Luiz on this summer, because he’s another who’s erraticism and concentration lets him down The issue with currently dropping Luiz, is that none of our other centre half’s have his passing… Read more »

Northbanker

Rich – leaving aside the liability factor (which is a huge leave) in playing Luiz, watch his passing carefully. Yes he does have the ability to play a great long pass. Many do not find their target though. But even more important, Luiz is the chief architect of crab football – I will use 90% as you like that % and say 90% of his passes are short square balls to Holding.

The bulk of his passing is to Holding every game he infects us with

Gabriel by contrast looks forward and plays forward

Leedsgunner

I hope Arteta resists the temptation to play ESR and Odegaard in the same line up. We need to more than ever man mange ESR and Saka very carefully. If we want those two to last the distance please use Odegaard to take the pressure of ESR and Pepe or Martinelli to take the pressure off Saka.

I would love a 2-0 win but I think it’s going to be a closely fought cagey encounter…. so I think a score line of something like 2-1 will be more likely.

Leedsgunner

Ideally I would love to get a million or two for selling Mustafi to Liverpool but if that’s not possible I will take Liverpool being knocked out of the Champions League, EPL title race, or the FA Cup due to Mustafi’s brain farts as compensation.

Mustafi and Özil out the same window?

Well done Edu..if he pulls it off!
