Liverpool doubleheader + PLAYERS PLEASE

by .

So, anyone out here getting a little bit, you know, irritable?

I am.

WHERE ARE THE PLAYERS!

I don’t have any updated intel on what is going on. I assume that Arsenal is looking at all options whilst also wrestling with new information… like, what the hell are we going to do about the £93m we’re probably going to lose in gate receipts this season?

The Torreira and Partey rumours are turning into the summers most boring transfer saga. They want to loan Torreira, we want to sell. They want to keep Thomas Partey, we’ll do pretty much anything bar pay the buy-out clause to bring him here. My hopeful guess is that we’ll come to an agreement. I wouldn’t be shocked if we jumped in with a loan with a YOU BEST PAY UP clause for next season. That would suit the player and the club. It looks like it’ll run right up to the wire regardless.

The even more boring transfer saga of Houssem Aouar continues to drag like a piece of toilet paper on the bottom of a Gucci loafer in an Essex night club. There are some accounts saying the bid has been sent. I find that sort of chatter so boring. It reeks of opportunists pretending they’re so connected to the deal they are getting texts when the fax is sent.

‘Vinnai, remember to leak to that small French account when you’ve finished up on that bid. Not like you have anything else to be doing today’

Creativity is the most important thing we can add to the squad as we stand right now. I’d love the mobility Thomas would bring to the club, but we’re really going to struggle against organised teams this season if we go in as-is.

The grimmest rumour we’ve had to listen to is the Jorginho suggestion. As a player, in Italy, in a league that doesn’t press, he’s perfect. Putting him into our midfield next to Xhaka would be a recipe for getting utterly rolled. I really, really, really, don’t want to see him line up in our midfield this season.

That said, we are going to have to consider other options at some point. They might not be our favoured choices, but our analysts are sure to have names that we could develop that could move our creativity up a notch or two.

Let us not forget that there are still a number of players that could see sharp exits over the next 10 days.

Cal Chambers is a Prem ready defender that needs games, he was in great form before he picked up that nasty injury, and I’m sure someone will move for him.

Mustafi was our best defender over the last 6 months. If he’s available for £8m, I wouldn’t be shocked to see a club in Europe come to his rescue. Though his wages might be a bit rich. One thing is for sure, he’s a game-time kind of guy. I don’t think he’d want to do nothing for a year.

Sokratis just needs to be shown the door. What a boring saga this one has been so far. Some West Ham folk were hearing rumours Moyes has bid for him.

Matteo is far too young to sit in the U23s for an entire year. He either has to lower his standards or get on his knees and beg for redemption. I am a bit surprised no one wants to take a chance on him. But, as is true in the real world right now, businesses are far more likely to want to invest their dollars in NOW talent, than take a chance on youth. Amazing how a bad attitude has crushed his reputation so fast.

Reiss had a good game the other night, but might still want to land more guaranteed minutes. Lacazette is clearly a favourite of Arteta, but we can’t be getting into contract issues again, if a club comes knocking, I think he’ll be asked to go.

Arteta dropped a press conference that was a little light on anything particularly interesting. Liverpool twice in 4 days is going to be tough. We’re going to prepare as well as we can. Outside that, it was mostly saying he wouldn’t comment on the players at other clubs.

It’ll be very interesting to see how quick the mood turns if we’re beaten by the best team in the world. It’s weird how people don’t seem to expect that now. A nice turn of events, but there is every chance we’ll have a rough time in Anfield. However, if we can escape the Premier League game with a point, that really will be magical. No better time to go to Anfield… zero fans is a help for the team, it’s just a little rough that they are such a good squad of players with solutions for most plans.

So, let’s look forward to an interesting week ahead. GIVE US SOME PLAYERS EDU WE NEED THEM! x

The fact that Arsenal have now made an official bid for Aouar confirmed by Lyon’s President
suggests that they plan to buy the player.

My guess is that the deal will be struck around £38-40 million with add ons.

Whether Arsenal will be able to buy Partey as well is debatable. I think that much will depend on who we manage to sell and the potential offload of Torreira and Guendouzi. Also what the club plan to do with Ozil.

I think we activate Partey’s clause if we move out players for good money.

Bamford, this is an Arsenal blog and you are being criticized because you can’t help but make everything about yourself and your anti-Arsenal agenda.

You were on here throwing shade at our win over top-3 Leicester in the week. Today, you are defending the honor of Lampard and OGS.

You come here specifically to start arguments which is a breach of the spirit of the site and the rules. Sort yourself out. No one wants to read it.

A good assessment of this Arsenal squad shows we’re two good midfielders away from competing at the top – barring any injuries, especially to Tierney

A takeaway from the Man U and Chelsea games is managing defence well into added time.

Both underdogs got done after conceding corners in 95/96th mins. and didn’t clear properly. Losing a bit of focus that late in the game hurts.

VAR refs appear to reinventing the treatment of handballs in the box. These clowns or theOr head of clowns, Riley, need to come out and explain to the clubs and fans/ supporters alike how this works. Don’t even cover basic expectation management. They thought they were untouchables??

CHEN

I am confused about the people here in this site.

They complain about lack of quality midfielders in the side and complain about us linking with jorginho.

Imagine xhaka, who has only his left foot that’s functional and jorginho, only his right… fuse them and you got a santi-esque player with exceptional long passing ability lol …

Jokes aside we defo need partey to be able to play back 4… with William at 10.

Useroz

Brighton now holds the PL and possibly world record of hitting the woodwork 5 times in a game. Some achievement really.

It is far too early in the season to make a forecast as to how the season will pan out or more importantly where clubs will finish in the League. On paper I think that Arsenal have got a very strong and experienced forward line. The manager has also reorganised and recruited new players in our defence and they are more resilient than in recent years. The missing piece in jigsaw is to recruit and improve our midfield. What I do know already is that for all the expensive players recruited by both Chelsea and Man United have defences which… Read more »

Banford To follow on from Marko’s very valid point about you listing all manner of ‘Ifs and buts’ for United et al but zero for your beloved Arsenal… What happens with United if they don’t sign the players you mention, OGS doesn’t find a midfield, and they don’t particularly pick up the performance level? Where’s the top 4 hopes then? Also a hit curious why Arsenal and Arteta need to ‘find a defence’ despite being a country mile better in that regard than both United and Chelsea. Another oversight/complete ignoring of reality. When you draw up umpteen stipulations for the… Read more »

Don’t we all just hate MU. Definitely the luckiest team in the history of the EPL. As an Arsenal fan, they are the team I really despise. Forget Spuds and Chelski, it’s MU that really piss me off. Early season is always a little chaotic, even more this season than usual. I believe that liverpool will be the key to how the season pans out . City , Chelsea, United , Tottenham and Arsenal could all be in the pack chasing the title as there is an element of inconsistency in all of those teams performances.. What i will say is Liverpool have been very fortunate with injuries over the last 2 seasons, and I mean VERY fortunate. The past few seasons we have been out of the title race by Christmas or earlier.
As much as Wenger failed to win the league by fading around the March April time when the Champions league kicked back in , we were quite often in the top 3 (sometimes top) at the start of the new year.

Ultimately we failed but even being in contention would be a bonus atm.

I actually wouldn’t be surprised if arteta lots for xhaka el neny instead of Ceballos v Liverpool. It’s negative but it got the job done last time and solid midfield and defense can win us the game considering we know between auba, Laca and nketiah we will always steal a couple of goals. For me no need to worry about creativity vs Liverpool – just restrict them offensively and our attackers will feed off counter attacking scraps just fine Honestly though I’d be really happy with a draw. Pierre Its not a coincidence that Liverpool dont suffer with many injuries. They have a world class dietician ( Klopp said she is his best signing for Liverpool). + Their transfer dealings are top class and they carefully examine a player’s physical ability when signing him. Best example being the last minute U-turn on the Nabil Fekir deal. The ref in yesterday’s match at Brighton comes from Manchester!

Sid

Neutralizing Mane and TAA is key when against liverpool. If they lose those 2 they will struggle.

Their midfield is set up for winning the ball back and ours is useless with the ball so expect the same approach from last time,
hopefully Klopp hasnt figured aerial balls into our box and going for the 2nd ball will have Arsenal staining their boxers.

Captain Tierney

SpanishDave

I think the ref was pretty fair last night. He also gave a pretty soft pen to Brighton which was overruled later by VAR. (Correct decision)
+ ManU completely deserved that late pen. Maupay intentionally threw his hand to the ball like a complete idiot. And this happened before the final whistle and Var had to intervene.

That said, ManU were outrageously lucky to win last night. Brighton hit the post 5 friggin times. Trossard hit a woodwork hat-trick. And Brighton easily outperformed ManU throughout thr whole game.

Pierre

Problem with rice is he won’t come cheap and I’m not sure if he is of sufficient quality to spend 40/50 million. Elneny can do the same job as rice. What we do need is that one midfield player who will transform us , whether it will be a more experienced one like coutinho who will provide the creativity that’s missing, or Partey who could give us what we have been missing at the base of our midfield , or Jorginho to replace Xhaka Jorginho is a class above what we have in midfield atm and I for one would… Read more »

CG You have been banging the drum about the number of G/A Guendouzi has put up for a year now. And using it to berate him and compare him with other midfielders. Why aren’t you using the same metric for Rice? I smell a British bias again. Guendouzi has better numbers for ball progressions and such than Rice, and I beleive their G/A numbers will be very identical because just like Guendouzi, Rice also is pretty ineffective in the final 3rd. Captain Tierney
“Its not a coincidence that Liverpool dont suffer with many injuries.
They have a world class dietician”

Luck plays a big part in picking up injuries , one day their luck will change .

Though having the best possible back room staff is important and can reduce injuries , but a dietician can’t stop a broken leg challenge or an awkward fall or twist.of an ankle .

Sid

Elneny and Xhakalson can be the 2 holding mids for now,
What we need is a 3rd midfielder to create, penetrate, link midfield with attack whilst being good at the press.

Getting another DM/holding CM will not help our play much.

Captain Tierney

Pierre

Yes but a dietician coupled with world class physios can prevent a lot of muscular injuries.
Is it a coincidence that Pool players dont suffer as many muscular injuries and nibbles as other teams?
I think not.

Chris

I’f I recall rightly we supposedly spent the summer of 200( trying to sign Baptista as Vieira’s replacement. Lucky miss.

The game at Anfield was epic though, didn’t he score 4? Rosicky scored a stunner in front of the Kop too. Remember going into those games back then with cautious optimism and it is great to have that feeling again going into a game at Anfield. The last few years there have been complete hide behind the sofa stuff, the 5-1 in 2014 was just humiliating.

Pierre

We ( and other teams) have had to man mark jorginho to stop him dictating the game .

That tells it’s own story .

This will be an important week in our transfer business. We need to recruit at least one if not two midfielders. I have always maintained that Arsenal will have sufficient funds to buy one notwithstanding what happens in outgoing transfers. The outgoing transfers are fairly clear. Messrs Sokratis, Mustafi, Kolasinac, Torreira and Guendouzi are unwanted. Sokratis and Mustafi need to be offloaded permanently as they are in final year of contract. I’m sure City employ the very best it it doesn’t stop players like Aguero , Sane or Laporte picking up major injuries.

Good physios will help but at the end of the day, for a team to go through 2 seasons with little or no injuries to their major performers like liverpool have done , takes an enormous amount of luck.

China1

In this pandemic window I don’t think anyone would spend 30m on ox given his terrible injury record and honestly pretty mixed form. Imo we robbed Liverpool for him

He was a player who even by his mid 20s didn’t have an established position, his form was always up and down and his injury record consistently poor. Even in his mid 20s he was ‘potential life rather than a proper player. I know not everyone agrees with me but I think his great frame and powerful running when he was fit masked over what was actually a very underwhelming player.

Sid

Having injury records of a player during teenage years(from age 13) will give you a good idea of what to expect
Lifestyle is a cause of being injury prone ie childhood diet, being driven to school by schoolbus, playing on cozy playing surfaces instead of hard ground, playing with shoes instead of toughening up barefoot

Captain Tierney

Jorginho always needs a Kante like player beside him to cover his weakness. When Sarri tried playing Jorginho as the deepest lying playmaker and left out Kante or played him as a box to box he completely got rolled over. He is slower and weaker than Xhaka. He cant win headers and Xhaka is much more braver and committed in defending, even tho he is not very good at it.

Sid

You make your own luck

Im telling you for free!

Captain Tierney

Pierre

Sane, Laporte and Kun were all knee injuries and luck played its part like it always does.
I’m talking about the preventable muscle injuries, fatigue related injuries and little nibbles which can be prevented by good diet and expert physios.

Pierre

Sid “Elneny and Xhakalson can be the 2 holding mids for now, What we need is a 3rd midfielder to create, penetrate, link midfield with attack whilst being good at the press.” The system Arteta is employing at this present time doesn’t allow for a 3rd midfielder. If we played a wing back system with 2 up top, 3 in centre mid and the wing backs giving us the width, that will allow for the 3rd midfielder to create and penetrate. Emiratesstroller

Pierre

Liverpool’s strength is that they build a team/squad and unlike most other clubs are not turning over players just for the sake of it.

Offloads like Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lovren are for a reason. In the case of latter he demonstrates similar characteristics that were exposed at Arsenal namely injury prone, inconsistent and wasteful.

Arsenal’s historic success under Wenger in first four and five years was similar. He relied on
a core of experienced players totally committed to club ie Seaman, Winterburn,Bould, Keown,Adams, Parlour and Bergkamp

I’m not denying Klopp has been excellent at squad building but with injuries there is always a certain amount of luck.

At the moment, we seem to be picking up injuries in training much too regularly .

Is that bad luck or are the players trying too hard to impress the manager and pushing their body’s too hard.

Martinelli, Sokrates, Smith Rowe and Cedric are just a few that are out due to training injuries..

That is something you rarely hear from liverpool.

Mentally it is more difficult for the players who enjoy the crowd responses to raise their game.

Paulinho

“As he (Jorginho) is a player who is not afraid to demand the ball under pressure and will help us beat the press.”

He might help to an extent, but Kovacic is the one at Chelsea that really helps deal with the press, and can use the press to his and team’s advantage, bypassing with a turn and dribble before driving into space. Jorginho doesn’t do that, he needs time to turn.

Its laughable that CG considers both Willian a mercenary just because he left Chelsea. He played for them for 7 years!! He chose to leave them not because of money, but the length of

I would also remind you that he provided 3 assists in his first game against Fulham.

Ishola70

Is it Pierre that is wanting Jorginho?

You would think with the problems we have seen with Xhaka, off the ball problems that he should think otherwise.

Jorginho is no different to Xhaka in having weakness off the ball.

But I suppose it’s all about on the ball isn’t it.

Yes, Kovacic is top class. Great on the ball, quick turn and very good technique.

Declan Rice is not a great technician but he is very very quick and great at tackling and winning the ball.

Not a fan of Jorginho but will take him only as a replacement for Xhaka. Can’t have both him and Xhaka in the same side, it will be suicidal.

.Chris “””””It’s no surprise you are on his back after just one average performance.”””””””””” I was on his back before he arrived.I don’t want these types at the club. ( mercenaries on their last legs) I said he would be exposed on our bigger pitch – and that seems pretty accurate analysis. Anyway we already had a glut of wide players ,more dynamic , more interesting ,more mobile and younger than this Chelsea reject. An appalling signing and waste of scant resources. As for PEA and his 3 year whopper. It took me 5 minutes to check and find out… Read more »

Jorginho and Xhaka are about the same age. We might get a few prettier passes but it doesn’t really make sense to spend there.

Kovacic can also look after himself and is not afraid of the physical as well as having good technique so this is what makes him a very good all round midfielder.

As for registas they are good to have in a team that is dominant and are very good defensively.

The regista originated in Italy and Italian teams were mean defensively which compensates for the regista.

Stick in a regista in a team that is not dominant or mean defensively in the EPL of today and you can have problems.

That can be the only outcome if he joined.

You can’t have two registas in the same team in midfield in the EPL. You can’t have two registas in the same midfield in any league for that matter.

A total waste of time Jorginho would be.

Ishola Xhaka is not even a top class passer if we ignore his other frailities for a minute. His short passes are rarely between the lines. His long passes to wide players although good are still very predictable. He moves his body first either left or right depending on which wide player he is targeting and then takes a long good look before hitting the pass. Opposition players comfortably take their positions even before the ball lands in wide areas. I don’t know what kind of regista he is. Don Pirlo was a regista and a master of his craft.… Read more »

CG you are completely lacking in context again with your ‘facts’. You seem to have ignored the point I made about Willian putting in an outstanding performance at Spurs last season, many glowing references on this site if I recall. Clearly shows he is capable of performing on a ‘big pitch’ would you agree? Your Aubameyang criticism about no goals at big grounds ignores how we were generally a mess and unstable since his arrival, and as soon as Arteta finds the system against big teams he scored winners in semi finals and finals. That sissy even getting into where… Read more »

“Your Aubameyang criticism about no goals at big grounds”

Obviously Wembley doesn’t count then?

And all of that is without him being pressed.
