Impressive victory keeps the momentum going

by .

Well, you’ll take that, right?

Arsenal made 7 changes against a very good Leicester team and came out worthy victors.

It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but it was a dogged hard-fought victory with plenty of positives.

Firstly, we’re back to winn… oh, wait, we beat West Ham. Felt like a loss. We’re back to winning with purpose after a grubby blip at the weekend.

Secondly, the team put their all into a comp most don’t really care about. I know that should be mandatory, but it isn’t always in this game. I like that everyone is fired up and ready to take their chance whenever it is offered up.

I’ll stop doing this numerically now. I was extremely happy to see Eddie back on the scoresheet after scoring the ugliest goal of the season. He’s a confidence player. You know he’ll always work hard and do the dirty work, but things just haven’t happened for him in front of goal. Well, he scored against West Ham for the winner, and he did the same tonight after connecting with Bellerin’s mazy run/pass, fumbling the ball into the net from close range.

Pepe has yet to find what his true purpose is going to be in this Arteta side, but he’s giving it a go. He’s very unconentional with the way he moves the ball, but you can see there’s a player waiting to burst out at some point. He’s fast, he can breeze past people, he just struggles with his end product.  Not sure he landed the assist tonight, but his shot/cross that hit the post caused and own goal. I’m sure there’s some fancy stat you can attribute to him.

Bernd Leno showed a little more confidence. He came for a couple of looping crosses that must have been tough in the wind and rain. I’d still like his handling to be a little better. He tipped a shot into danger and he flapped a cross in the second half. It’s early days, he was out injured for a while, so it might take some time to see peak Bernd.

Kola shouldn’t keep getting games. He’s not focused nor is he good enough. He lost a runner with lazy marking and it could of cost us. I did love to David Luiz having a pop at him. In general, it was good to see him back in the side, he was having a heated mentoring session on the way to the tunnel with Saka at half time as well.

Talking of Saka, the kid is absolutely class. He put on a much better show this evening.

Last point. Matteo and Mesut. Left behind. They can’t even make the League Cup. They need to find new clubs. This is ruthless behaviour, but smart. Bring two people that don’t do what you need them to do in for a cup game, and, well, it shows you don’t care about the game. We won. Our 7th domestic cup win in a row. Can’t argue they needed to be included, can you?

Overall, that is a great win. It’s the exact sort of momentum you’ll take going into the game against Liverpool. Most of the players on the pitch put their hats in the ring for selection next Monday. That’s all you can ask.

Short one today, see you in the comments. x

I would love us to activate Parteys clause as late as possible so they dont have time to source a replacement. Anyway, its all going to drag.

We signed Party Boy and A-Hooooar yet then?

Salpar,

Have to disagree with you: a midfield two of CC and Marko just doesn’t cut it for me.

We need to guile and resourcefulness of a Bamford or a Dariano to really help Arteta push us on and properly compete in top 4 territory.

Marc

So it’s official – Arsenal fans have finally been pushed over the edge by a transfer window. The only shock is it happened after Wenger left.

Anyone notice Liverpool played with a 4-1-2-1-2 today?

I know it’s a variation of the 4-3-3 but Klopp isn’t one that has really changed since he started.

I start to worry about Saliba. Arteta sees Holding ahead of him. That says a lot.

Valentin

Saliba is better than Holding, but Saliba style of passing while better is a lot more risky than Holding. He also has a tendency to run into space with the ball maybe a lot more than usually CBs do. That leaves space behind that good counter-attacking team can exploit. That rarely happened because of his pace. But Arteta may not like the fact that he does not respect the established pattern of play. Saliba may have to change his style of play to fit into Arteta. That’s disappointing, but not necessarily a bad thing for the long term. We will… Read more »

“Arsenal Truth on Swiss Ramble report saying Arsenal will lose an estimated £109m in revenue in 2020-21.”

I assume that quote is correct and the prediction is a loss of £109m in revenue not P&L because we were losing over £20 million a season before COVID – that loss of revenue will drive the losses up to a crazy level.

Anyone who criticised the club for the salary reduction or making unfortunate redundancies should hang their heads in shame.

Small change for kronke

Emiratesstroller

Pierre & Valentin My guess is that we will continue to play a 3-4-3 formation this season. Arteta will select in starting lineup Luiz and Gabriel as two regular CBS in EPL. The remaining place at back will be selected from Holding, Mustafi [if he stays], Saliba [if he improves] and Tierney. I think that based on Arteta’s remarks Saliba needs time to settle into living in London and adapting to the demands of EPL. We should not be too hasty in making judgment about this 19 year old. I don’t think you have to worry about that (Saliba). Arteta is just being slow and cautious about integrating him. I have been consistent in my view that Arsenal will buy Partey before end of transfer window as replacement for Torreira who is 100% leaving the club. The only issue is whether Arsenal can generate in this transfer window some additional funds from outgoing players. If Arsenal generate another £10-15 million from sales I am fairly confident that the club has resources to make up difference. This will be probably a last minute job. Only 10 days left to sell Mustafi, Sokratis, Guendouzi, Torreira and Kolasinac. Can we expect to get around 60m on these players?

Bamford10

Dani Yes, he very well might like it; he might also not have any other option given that it might be some time before he has a CB pairing he is comfortable playing alone in a back four. The question is whether we are effective enough in the 343 to challenge for top four. Some here think so, but I have my doubts. We have been outshot 13 to 9 in the 22 PL matches Arteta has managed thus far, and the 343 is a relatively defensive-oriented set-up in that it gives 7 players defensive responsibilities / a defensive default… Read more »

Marko

Always with the angle Bam. But genuine question how are you on the United blogs that you frequent? More or less the same or a completely different person? Who am I kidding you can only be one way

Marc

Bamford

Right now what formation we play is actually irrelevant to whether we can compete for top 4. It doesn’t matter if we player 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 we still have a non existent midfield. Fix that and we can then talk about what formation is best or suits us.

HighburyLegend

“Can we expect to get around 60m on these players?”

Can we expect to get rid, at least, of only one of those players ? lol

Sokratis has been allowed to leave for free. Wenger signed Mustafi for 35m, so I believe we can atleast expect 12-14m for him. Some clubs are interested in Torriera, so surely he is leaving.

I agree that Holding is likely to stay in this transfer window.

However, there may be a review of Centre Backs in January with an excess of CBs once Chambers, Mustafi and Mari all match fit.

As matter stand the only defenders likely to leave are Sokratis + Kolasinac. However, that
could change if we are offered a transfer fee for one of others. Any transfer fee north of £10

Yeah, it’s just weird. Making excuses for the same failing has been and never beens year in year out like Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi etc but goes in on a 19 yo CB when he hasn’t started the first 3 games since he arrived, smh.

The difference between Saliba and Gabriel would be pretty obvious if you didn’t have an agenda I would think, 19vs 22 years old, Gabriel has a lot more experience so probably easier for him to settle in a new team.
