Transfer wheels need to start turning this week

by .

I think we’re heading into a week of action.

Some teams have had shockers and lost.

Some teams have had shockers and clearly showcased their weaknesses (hello, Arsenal).

Some teams just need to make some moves.

Arsenal hasn’t done much of a job moving on the problem players this summer, but I suspect things are going to come to a head as Arteta gets real with his intentions.

Lacazette isn’t getting a new deal, so it doesn’t matter how much quality the manager thinks he has, we need to move him on before we get into a Rambo like situation. This is Arteta.

“At the moment, we haven’t started any negotiations,”

“We have a lot of things still to do in this market and at the moment we are focusing on those things.”

“He’s a player I’m really happy with. I think we’ve shown him a lot of faith since I arrived here.”

“But we cannot start any speculation. We know that any player who is under two years of their contract is always going to be talked about.”

It’s clear from the above that he’s not a priority from a contract perspective. He’s a goal scorer, he might be expensive, but he can be a difference-maker, so let’s hope someone is feeling generous. Also, let’s hope Edouard is being benched for Arsenal, not Spurs.

We need to move on some of our centre backs this week. We are stocked heavily and there is just no way any of them are getting games. Sokratis and Cal Chambers seem the most likely to be moved on, with West Ham and Fulham looking likely destinations for the Englishman. Rumours are also quite strong that Lazio is interested in Mustafi.

The two players that have been notably absent with very little movement are Matteo G and Lucas Torreira. No one wants a piece of the Frenchman, something I suspect the player didn’t expect. He must be in panic mode because he was literally the move valued teenager of all time this January, now the best he can do is a phone call from Unai Emery.

Torreira is a different story, he’s attracted a lot of average interest from Italy… but Spanish media is moving on the idea that Simeone wants to pull the trigger and make a deal happen. He’s apparently spoken to the player and the obvious deal is he leaves with Partey coming the other way. It’s a face-saving swap for the Spaniards and it leaves both parties with decent players.

The clearest issue we have in our squad though is the lack of creativity in the final third. Willian put in a duff performance against West Ham, making it quite clear that we need a real specialist in the area of unlocking deep and medium blocks. I think we’ll make it happen for Aouar, but Aulas won’t make it easy for Arsenal… but, they dind’t make it easy for Alex Lacazette back in the day.

BIG GARY NEVILLE SAID SOMETHING WE ALL AGREE WITH:

“I think Mikel Arteta is punching above his weight,” said Neville on his podcast. “He is going above and beyond the players he has. The shape and the organisation, things we have criticised Arsenal for in the past, is good.

“They are not finishing in the top four like Arsene Wenger used to get criticised for but they look like a team which is more cohesive. It has continued from the end of last season and he is doing a great job.

“I just think Mikel Arteta would love that £150 million that Frank Lampard has got this summer.”

The Nuggets are doing well at the minute, let’s see if Stan and Josh feel like they can unlock some of their cash and make this summer a Christmas miracle.

Short post today, see you in the comments!

“””””Are the same people calling Bale a great signing for the Spud’s the same people criticising Arsenal for taking Willian on a free or extending Auba’s contract?””””””

Has Bale got a 3 year contract?

Ishola70

I can’t see how recycling the ball and turning over short passes with the occasional long ball is so revered.

Surely there are midfielders around who could also do this but also give better off the ball attributes.

Leedsgunner

Honestly some of you need to step away from the Arsenal if they make you this miserable. The club literally cannot do anything right. What gives? I’ve criticised the club plenty in the past but I’ve given credit where I think it is due. Arteta has the lads playing as a team and fearless of the other big sides for the first time in forever… let’s give him a chance before we write the whole project off. Martinez wanted to go… I personally would have kept him and sold Leno but Arteta prefers the German, I’m happy to trust his… Read more »

You think the EPL title is on? This season?

Rosapirescastlesaka

I think West Ham deserve credit they were teak tough in CM in Rice and Soechuk and defensively well organised . They worked hard and with a similar system to our own shut us down , it was a good lesson for us nad hopefully one we will learn from . Mitigation circumstance for us is 1 Early in season nobody on purple patch form yet 2 Tierney was a big blow to original plan 3 thin system needs teaking for attacking option, on a front three vs a flat 5 I think you are bteer going with a No.10… Read more »

“”””For the first time in years, I feel like we have a manager who is willing to compete for the title, and not just make up the numbers.””””””

that’s what I felt too, but,

Page 1 to win a league title

Get a bloody big goalkeeper who fills the goal. And who can calm the crowd and gives reassurance to his defenders.

eg, Shilton, Allison, Seaman, Lehmann, Schmiechal, Cech etc
Martinez in time , could have won a league title for Arsenal.

Leedsgunner

I know it’s a long long long shot but mentally Arteta is not phased by Klopp, Pep or Frank… and that’s half the battle.

Our lack of depth will more than likely derail us but Arteta is this game to win… you can see it in his eyes. He means business. I hope the club back him in the transfer market.

Even for Wenger, in his last years at the club, when he spoke of winning the title, you knew he was just saying the words without really believing it himself.

Leedsgunner

*is in this game…

bacaryisgod

I can understand why so many people are miserable.

In our last 14 games, we’ve won just twice, drawn once and lost 11 times.

How Arteta’s kept his job is a mystery,

Ishola70

lol it’s not misery is it it’s just calling it as it is regarding the West Ham match and realising we need a few additions in certain areas going forward.

I mean the atmosphere about the club is unrecognisable from what it was from the start of last season so everyone should be very happy with that.

People are making way too much out of this west ham game In our last 13 games in all comps, We’ve beaten Liverpool twice, city, Chelsea, wolves, Norwich, Watford, Southampton as well as ofc West ham and Fulham. We also drew with Leicester. We lost to villa and spurs. Thats a win % of 77% across all comps, including a cup win and a mini cup win for the charity shield. You guys need to realize that no club, including the league winners plays well every game or wins every week. Even the invincibles put in some pretty drab draws… Read more »

“If people think we can sign edouard, Aouar and partey and never struggle against a poor team again you lot are in for a very rude awakening.”

Don’t worry about me, I don’t think we will sign any of them. lol

China1

For everyone’s reference if we matched our form from the last 13 games across all comps through the whole PL season we’d end up on 87 points and probably win the league.

I’m not expecting it to happen but my point is we have a lot more to be positive about right now. If we maintain our current levels without even improving we’ll be doing absolutely great quite frankly. So we struggled against west ham. It happens

bacaryisgod

Ishola70 The West Ham was awful, I agree. I think we might have come in a little over-confident and West Ham were up for it after getting turned over the week before. Because Fulham were so poor, it masked the fact that players like Gabriel and Willian still have to sync with the rest of the team. Willian and Bellerin weren’t on the same page, for example. That will improve over the next few weeks. With Tierney out, it meant our fluency on both sides was really lacking. Let’s not forget that this was effectively Leno’s first serious game back… Read more »

It’s about consistency levels and apart from the cup games there were too many draws in the EPL all round since Arteta took over.

This team still has a lot to prove and a few are getting ahead of themselves here.

The line is still that Arsenal must prove themselves to be more than a cup team this season.

bacaryisgod

Have to say that Bale coming in on loan will make our matches with them even spicier. A frontline of Kane-Son-Bale against a likely back 3 of Holding-Luiz-Gabriel is a pretty terrifying thought.

Freddie Ljungberg

https://readarsenal.com/2020/09/22/lazio-close-to-agreeing-deal-for-shkodran-mustafi/ “Calciomercato claims Lazio have identified Mustafi as a priority for the centre of their defence, with Arsenal willing to sell for around £13million. The report states that asking price could even drop to £11million.” Yes please. Just have to sell another player or 2 to afford 1 midfielder. This is the problem when you have so many ageing, underperforming and overpaid players still on the books, you have to sell 3-4 players to afford one of your targets. Was the same last summer too. Hopefully after next summer we don’t have to deal with that shit anymore and can… Read more »

However, it’ll be interesting to see how many games Bale, Kane and Son play together. They all have recent injury issues.

China1

I agree ishola I just think the mood swings way too fast here

Our current form is excellent. If we dropped quite significantly down to a 60% win record for the rest of the season and drew a good handful of games, we’d comfortably break 70 points and probably be in the CL next year

We don’t need miracles to achieve our goals this season.

Leftfootcurler

About creativity issues We had 6 shots right? On creativity issues, it was actually encouraging. In the first half, Saka and Auba made great runs in behind which Xhaka and Ceballos just didn’t take advantage of. Xhaka is gradually recovering from all the abuse he received but he is not fully recovered yet. He misplaced a pass to Saka at 2:30 mins and after that he ignored all passes to Saka BTL for a while because he was scared of losing the ball. Eventually for the first goal,he does find Saka BTL and the move goes ahead and we score.… Read more »

“saying Arsenal are a “cup team” is just lazy.”

So what term would you use to describe this team at this time?

Are you another that is getting ahead of themselves here?

And why take umbrage at that term anyway. It was a very good achievement from Arteta to land the FA Cup so early in his tenure.

The main point is that Arsenal need to show that they can improve on consistency in the league.

Bojangles

Marc

It appears to still be wrapped up in the unopened cd box.

bacaryisgod

I’m not sure it’s a good thing, but I don’t see much of a gap between us and Tottenham’s squads. There’s a lot of cancelling each other out (Kane/Auba, Lloris/Leno,and misfits Ozil/Ali).

The only player we can’t match up with is Son, assuming that Bale won’t be the same man of his peak years..Martinelli is similar in style but even if fit he needs a lot more development to get close to the Korean.

China1

Maybe this keeper is an absolute beast in all the stats we aren’t looking at… like hair growth speed, number of cream eggs he can fit in his mouth or tik tok followers

All perfectly valid criteria to judge a keeper I might add

I’ll reserve judgment for now away

Ishola70

Left Foot

When a term like cup team is mentioned that is because Arsenal have won the domestic cup most recently but have disappointed in the league for several seasons.

Until that is remedied hopefully this season that is how it currently stands.

China1

I said above if you win 60% of your league games and draw a handful you break 70 points and probably get top 4

So I’m gonna start the countdown today!

60% of 38 is 23, games we need to win! 2 down, 21 left! You heard it here first! They should employ me in the stats department

It was a mistake selling Emi. He exuded big alpha confidence which made the whole back 4 have a sense of security which we haven’t experienced since Jens. Its young in goalkeeping terms. In fact its the perfect age.

As we witnessed at Villa Park, where Martinez stayed perfectly still on his goal-line and made a magnificent save from the penalty kick on his home debut. No nerves, just class.

Three points for Villa and a significant part of his fee already paid for.

So, chances are fans are not getting into stadiums this side of Christmas. Will this push for clubs to get their own TV packages up and running ? We won’t be able to see all of Arsenal’s games via Sky and BT Sport (UK), correct me if I’m wrong. I’m sure it’s very complex with TV rights and all but we as fans want to watch all our clubs games and as discussed before, would be willing to pay for it.

Marko

Would you agree that it comes down to a difference of opinion rather than it having to be someone is right and others are wrong.

You need to direct that to the people who think Martinez is better than Leno and who think we made a mistake selling him

Marko

Three points for Villa and a significant part of his fee already paid for.

You are so fucking stupid it’s unreal. But fair enough if 3 points with him in goal represents part of his transfer fee paid for then Leno paid for himself a very long time ago. In fact I think we might owe him money…

Goobergooner

When we have a defence (including a solid midfield that opposition players can’t just stroll through) that can actually defend balls into the box and set pieces, we won’t have to be as reliant on Leno coming out off his line.

Leaving him to do what he does best, stop shots.
That is surely more important than a lot of people seem to believe at the moment.

He does need to improve around the 6 yard box but still a better defence will also make Leno look better, works both ways.

Buzzy

How can anyone argue about Martinez vs Leno situation? It’s perhaps as big a mistake as selling RVP to Utd. Here it’s not about strengthening a rival but shooting ourselves in the foot by dropping all those potential points Emi could have saved due to him being a superior keeper. One of the key aspects of being a world class keeper is the frame and height. That allows the keeper to catch the ball easily over the other players, no rocket science that. And whether it was the right or wrong decision, it’s done.

And our backline is slowly looking better on paper, we will see the influence that has on Leno when they start gelling on the pitch.

Goobergooner

I’d say there are times where Leno second guesses coming out; and subsequently flapping or punching, because he backs himself to be able to make a reflex save but doesn’t back the defender to win the aerial ball.

He can definitely improve on that. And so can our CBS.

Yeah maybe making excuses but ah well. They’ve all been made for Martinez.

Buzzy

Goobergooner

Goobergooner

Buzzy I hope so, cause it’s what we’re stuck with for the season !😂

Xhaka has improved, but he is a horrible “quarterback” style midfielder. Not good in the tackle, not mobile enough, always looking for the Hollywood pass. Doesn’t assist enough, doesn’t score and He doesn’t provide any balance there. We wouldn’t be after a DM and an AM of that prick was any good.

The Godfather

Wonder how divided that locker room is over the sake of Martinez. Really short sighted and stupid decision by Arteta and Edu. Martinez was raised and dipped in Arsenal colors and brought so much confidence and embodied the new spirit of Arteta and Arsenal. Sorry but Leno isn’t Oblack.

How many games has he actually won for Arsenal?
With Emi in goal on the run he had to close the season, I actually believed that with him we had a chance regardless of opposition.

Marko

Actually Edouard Mendy is the definition of a late bloomer. He’s only popped off the last 3 years. He seems to have been brilliant at Reims with a lot of clean sheets in ligue two and it carried over into ligue Un and then he got his move to Rennes where he continued to impress and now he’s got his move to Chelsea. His sample size with which to judge his quality is clearly far bigger than Martinez’s 10-12 games. Did Chelsea underpay for him or did we just happen to get a great deal for Emi.
