Eddie closes in on record | Arsenal transfer round-up

by .

It is WILD that the season starts this Saturday. Fulham (A), West Ham (H), followed up by Liverpool (A) in the league, with a delightful EFL game against Leicester wedged in between. 4 games in 16 days, you can’t beat it.

One thing seems certain, we’ll not have our transfer business complete by the time the season kicks off. It’s a shame, but when you remember that Don Raul spent this summers money last season, you can’t really complain.

We’ve already managed to land ourselves some injury news. David Luiz is out of the Fulham game with a neck injury (wtf?). That leaves us with Rob Holding to pick up the centre of defence. The boy from Bolton is back in favour, even without the injury according to reports… which does seem to point to a bit of hoarding in central defence from Arteta and his staff. It’ll be very interesting to see how long it takes Gabriel and Saliba to edge their way into contention.

There’s been quite a bit of buzz about who is and is not at training at the moment. There were stories that Xhaka came in on his day off. We’ve seen Mesut and Matteo training with the first team. There’s a whole load of youngsters that have been given a chance to train with the first team. I don’t think any of it means much. I think the coach, particularly with the players that had been ostracised, is just hedging his bets for the coming season and trying to avoid drama.

Of particular interest is Matteo. The club were keen to move him on as a bit of a star. Well, that hasn’t amounted to much. Juninho of Lyon had this to say.

‘I get along very well with the (Arsenal) sports director. We spoke on the blower. Houssem Aouar is really appreciated by Arteta. There have been some discussions for Matteo Guendouzi who is also a good player. He was mentioned during the discussion, but this is not the profile we need, we were very clear. If it is like that, it does not interest us at all – it is, and we stopped.’

That’s quite adamant from a club that were strongly linked earlier in the window. Is this because they don’t like what he offers as a midfielder or more linked to his ways that are now widely known? If the problem shifting Matteo is that everyone knows he’s a bit of a whopper, then the player has two choices, he either knuckles down, or he’ll be earning less money than Neil Maupay by the time he ends his contract with Arsenal.

Hector Bellerin, our vegan club owning fashion-forward man-beast on the right… is attracting interest from Barcelona. They’re pulling 2011 transfer tactics.

‘Hey Edu, we like that socially conscious right back of yours’

‘We have no money though, is this still a possibility?’

Hopefully, we tell them no. The same goes for PSG who think that £25m is ok for a top player in his prime. If Brentford can land £28m for a striker from Villa, we can go a little harder at these fees. The price we’re rumoured to be looking for is £35m, which would be a lot better, and hopefully give us the funds to bring Hossem Aouar to the club.

There’s been very little noise around Alex Lacazette, which is surprising, but the hint may have been from the Juninho interview.

‘That is not our level in terms of contract. For the majority of these players… In January I called Alexandre Lacazette to chat a bit with him because he was having problems at Arsenal and I said to myself: “Why not do a loan for 6 months with us where you will enjoy yourself, play all the games and score the goals like you know how to? And then you go back to Arsenal or somewhere else.” But from the moment that you start looking at the level of the contract of these players, like with Juventus and Barcelona, it is not possible for us today.’

It’s reported that Mr Lacazette earns about £180k a week. There aren’t many clubs looking to shell out that sort of money combined with a big fee at the moment. So you’re in a situation where you either have to take an L on the fee, which doesn’t help our midfield dreams, or you have to hope a club like Atleti really are desperate for goals and see value.

Other players, that don’t have a profile, are literally ripping up their deals to get the Bosman. We’ve already lost Mikhi for nothing to shake off his £180k a week deal. Sokratis is playing the same game as we try and free ourselves of his £90k a week. I can’t imagine that Schalke are going to drop a massive fee for Kola who is on £120k a week. What is a club to do? We know these players are more than happy to sit on longterm deals and pick up the cheque. It’s better that you just move them on and try your hardest to sign players that can at least play to the value of their contract.

I’m half wondering if a few Arsenal players are waiting to see if they are going to be included in the squad for the opening game of the season before they decide to move. We’ll also see some panic moves when teams lose their opening two games (pray it ain’t us), when inevitable injuries mount, or clubs start to bring in fees from late spenders.

Eddie, cold as ice, 4 goals in 2 games, he now sits one goal from Franny Jeffers and Alan Shearers record. Hopefully, this is his breakout season. He needs to carry some of that swagger into the Arsenal games. It’s clear he has all the raw ingredients. He’s the fox in the box that Wenger spoke about all those years ago and he has a Bielsa workrate. I think he just needs a bit of luck to fall his way for things to click this season. Fingers crossed.

On that high note, let’s call it a day, and pray for some deals to drop. See you in the comments. x

P.S. WELL PLAYED AMN. England debutant. Hopefully the first of many.

I think we’re an attacker short with Aouar added because I’m of the view Lacazette will move.

Oh in that case then we absolutely don’t need Draxler. If your idea of us needing Draxler is him replacing a striker then I dunno what to tell you that’s pretty stupid. Thankfully though there’s links to Eduoard so the people running Arsenal have some sense

Champagne Charlie

Marko

Love that you exist on this place to tell folk how things are “pretty simple” before spilling literally just your opinion. Or how what others have to say is “stupid”, again on your say so.

Pretty blessed that you’re here to inform everyone of the status quo while the rest of us wrestle with mere opinions and musings.

“How many points relative to their 66 points of this past season?”

I don’t really think of things that way, but I guess I see both teams improving on this season by 7-9 points, finishing with somewhere between 73 and 75 points. If Chelsea don’t solve their defensive weaknesses, they could fall short of that 7-9 point improvement. If United don’t solve the problems they have when facing teams that sit deep, they could fall short of that 7-9 point improvement as well.

Would love to see Spurs really crash this season

Amen to that .
At what cost to arsenal tho ??

Chill out with the season predictions! This is Mikel first season let’s see how he handles himself. The two first games are pivotal, bad results and suddenly we in problems. Arsenal will not be in the top 4 anytime soon, so let’s get that out the way. Irrespective of who we sign top 6 or lower is more realistic if we talking about predictions. It’s all about the Cups! Arsenal Twitter don’t want to believe it buts it’s facts. Spurs, Arsenal, Everton, Leicester, Wolves and the 20/21 surprise team are in a mini league competing against each other. That’s where… Read more »

Sorry to say but our strikers are only strikers in name only. Lacazette and/or Eddie use up so much energy closing down the keeper and the opposition back 4 that I’m surprised they have any energy left to make runs into the box. Kaz is right in saying that Lacazette does a mountain of good work for the team, tackling back into midfield and basically putting himself about. Unfortunately we didn’t spend 53 million on him to be a work horse, we spent 53 million on him to score 20 + goals a season. As I can’t see our main… Read more »

Would draxler be that bad an addition ?

Serious ?

Is he injury prone.. he’s at the age to do something with his football life.

It will be tighter at the top this season.

As little as 80 points could win the league which could bring many teams , including Arsenal, into the equation, especially if we get off to a decent start.

Auba. Has to be played down the middle.

Pepe can push but for long periods of time no.

Saks martinellli will push on the left.

It is getting the want out of him

This ‘Bamford” vs “Churlish’ conversation is interesting It’s hard to predict where we finish this season, the FA cup gave the squad needed confidence in the manager. They look like they are ready to walking on burning members for him. We are definitely going into this season, with a better squad…even as it is. Adding a midfielder just makes it better. There are so many intangibles that will determine where we finish; -If we steal a march on our rivals with a very strong start [like Chelsea did last season], anything is possible -Will the banished players from last season… Read more »

Couldn’t be more splintered straddling that fence, so both United and Chelsea could improve by 7-9 points but at the same time NOT if they don’t improve their weaknesses?

Cheers for that

Who do you rate as having the best manager of the sides mentioned? We know OGS is “excellent”, how do Lamps and Arteta feature in the scale?.

Pedro

Pierre going VERY bold.

GunnerDNA

William and Pepe key to anything good Arsenal doing this season. All new signings will need months to settle, so I can’t understand how Arsenal is going to jump from 8th-4th. Jack Grealish would’ve been a good addition if he wasn’t that expensive instead of that kid coming from France. Can never go wrong with PL tested players. Most fans are of the thinking that new transfers will hit the ground running but the PL is just different. The time players get on the ball in other leagues is not afforded in the PL.

Dissenter

Once upon a time I too rated Draxler but that time is long gone. I recall seeing him play for Germany when they played the US in 2013 summer. His pace and power was breathtaking, he seemed to have the world at his feet. Once Draxler decided to warm the beach behind Di Maria and Neymar, it was clear his ambition.was limited.
I don’t want him anywhere near Arsenal. Willian can do everything we would have wanted him for.

Hd

Could not resist after being a reader for a few years. Don’t really agree with Pierre on anything but do have to agree with putting us in the mix for the league. Even if we don’t get aouar, if we get drax and partey or any decent defensive cm, we will be in the mix. That’s same formula as Leicester, great defense and a lethal striker. We can win a lot of matches with that.

Carts

Willian and Pepe either side’ of Auba definitely makes the most sense. Actually a rather exciting trio, to be honest!

3 in MF is anyone’s guess…

I’m not sure how moving to PSG from Wolfsburg can be deemed lacking ambition, not what i’d criticise him for anyway. Think stubbornness and being unwilling to see the writing on the wall is more what I’d lay at his feet.

Poor Draxler was unfortunate to join PSG under Emery though so hardly much of a surprise he lost all sense of himself playing centre half and occasionally in goal.

salparadisenyc

RSPC For me Draxler seems a back up plan to Aouar, and i’m pleased we have one if that the case although it could just be a pile of noise coming from PSG as they clearly know what were in market for. It’s all weird hypotheticals at this moment as Willian could be filling that space and Partey could be the target but i’m hoping its Aouar with more flair, and I love a bit of Joe Strummer flair. It won’t be both Aouar and Partey, unless lighting strikes. Step up people I’m going for 2021 Man City 91 Liverpool… Read more »

I’m pleasantly calm for some reason.
I think it’s the togetherness Arteta has generated in the squad and entire club that’s making me somewhat giddy. Maybe this is what you folks were calling sauce all along but it feels like there’s an X-favor with us- an intangible I can’t quite define.
We will add a quality central midfielder, probably Partey and we should be fine.
Like azed just wrote, injuries will be a key factor how far we go.

Dissenter

I dint want to poopoo Draxler too much but getting him instead of our desired targets is reminiscent of getting Mykhi just to get rid of Sanchez.
We have Willian and maybe Mesut Ozil [who has to play well to show prospective suitors he’s not done yet.] that can play his role.

Aussie+Gooner

Arsenal will not spend much more money until we get rid of the dead weight off the payroll. None of these players will be easy to shift as they are paid way too much. And: Aouar – If City are in for him, we have no chance, too expensive for us anyway Partey – doesn’t want to come, his club doesn’t want to lose him, move on Draxler – the nearly man, don’t go there unless he is very cheap or swap for Guendouzi. Martinez – must stay, pay him as much as Leno and let them battle it out… Read more »

I mean I dunno why you’re getting so menstrual about it charles you’re justifying bringing in Draxler because Lacazette might leave… which is kinda dumb. I mean you get this way when it’s a personal favorite of yours like you’ve been attacked or something. Relax it’s okay

Ernest Reed

“ I like the players they’ve signed, just not sure how convinced I am of Frank yet.” And that remains the X-Factor with Lampard, Pedro. He failed to get more out of an otherwise decent Derby team two years ago as they went hot and cold too often and, guess what – he did it again with Chelsea last season. If Lampard cant get 3rd or better this season then the common denominator will indeed be Lampard as he has been provided decent teams in his short managerial career. Bold prediction – Pep is shown the door at Man City… Read more »

The Bundesliga ain’t exactly the strongest. I recall people were gushing about Ousmane Dembélé too when he left Dortmund. Injuries aside, he couldn’t translate the same form to a stronger league.

No Thanks to Draxler.. One of Ozil’s BFF’s from the German team. Also, looking at his injury history .. knee problems, foot injuries, mysterious flu viruses, etc. Actually his injury history reads like a Diaby rap sheet.

Anyhow.. maybe 5 years ago.. but not interested in him now, for me. That ship has sailed, imo.

If we sell laca, I don’t think eddie is his replacement.
Laca scored 15 goals last season in all comp along with 4 assists.
Eddie on the other hand had 3 goals, 0 assists.
Martinelli is the obvious replacement. But because Eddie is English, we have to give him more time than a Brazilian I guess. Unless Martinelli is a LW. Then we need a new CF altogether.

Covid-19 reasons aside, we always seem to have problems or hiccups selling players at decent fees relatively to PL and other European leagues. Are we paying way above market wages?? Some mediocre players from other clubs changed hands for very decent fees. What’s wrong with outs, even if they are not top performers, nor glamorous stars… The club needs to bloody learn from this and setting player wages sensibly. It’s not only the transfer fees. He was a better player 4 years ago. It’s hard to even recall a single match where he got a load of praise for his performance spanning a good few years now

Tierney gets it on the regular. Saka got it on the regular. Even AMN started getting it. Bellerin hasn’t for yonks now

Draxler huh ? Seems to me he should only be brought if Aouar goes to City. I maybe in the minority who thinks Partey should be the utmost priority , everything else should come later. Cc Agree that there might still be a player in Draxler yet and maybe a right move and he can finally start fulfilling his potential. Arsenal tho is not a right move for him rn. He is predominantly a LW now similar to Coutinho. If he comes here He’ll have Auba, Willian and potentially Saka ahead of him in that position. The 3-4-3 format which we played towards end of last season seemed to work very well and hopefully we have beefed up our defence this summer. Clubs with bigger squads will do much better. Liverpool won’t blow teams away this time around not with that genre press with no new additions. They have played like that for two seasons now and it’s gonna catch up with them. Yes, Arteta is learning on the job.. It shows that there’s an x-factor about him.
He’s shown he can inspire a team to do big stuff with the FA cup victory and the path we took to winning it. We had to go through City and Chelsea under considerable pressure.

Lampard has no excuses now, Chelsea have spent too much to be satisfied with fourth best.
He’s lucky though, the sheer quality of elite footballers they have at the moment will beat most of the smaller teams. They have too many players who are capable of individual moments brilliance to win games. They will win the 1 vs 1 battles all over the field.

Willian who will be 35 when his deal expires. Aubameyang will be 34 and Soares will be 33? We’ve just cleared out a load of average/old players.

… and at the same time we’re looking down the back of the sofa to see if we can afford Aouar.

Inter want £35m for Eriksen. If Aouar is not possible, do people think Eriksen is worth thinking about? If we had Eriksen, we could play Willian wide left, Pepe wide right and Aubameyang through the center. What do people think?

In the last one or two years of their contracts Willian, Auba and Soares won’t be any where near the first team. Not there thought. It’s the way the club is run.

Look
Amn don’t wanna be a RB

Give him a shot at DM.
Has pace, enough game time to impose himself..

Try it out or flog him.

You say you see us finishing five points off of 4th this season. Is that what you see regardless of what we do b/t now and October 5th, or is that contingent upon our signing additional first XI players? That is, do you see the current squad finishing five points off of 4th or an improved version of the current squad doing that?

R.S.P.C.Arsenal

We’re gonna end up panic buying and selling come Oct 4 ain’t we.

HighburyLegend

If I remember correctly Aouar is interested only by a move to Juventus.
Can’t remember where I’ve read that…

@RSPC : old habits die hard!!
(especially at Arsenal)
(lol)

35 mil for 28 year old Christian Eriksen would be a terrible, terrible transfer.

Doesn’t suit us whatsoever, he’s not dynamic at all, and he’s a former Spud. Have a word.

WinOrDie

Unless Arsenal signs Aour and Partey, i don’t see how they can get into Top 4 Considering Chelsea and Man Utd are increasingly strengthening their squads both in quality and depth. Though Arteta is far a better coach than Lampard and Ole and that is a fact.

Marko

Hefty fucking no with big brass bollox to bringing in erikson

HighburyLegend

Oh and by the way, Aouar is a priority for City.

GunnerDNA

Edu needs to do his job as the TD and tell Mikel to focus on his. It’s noticeable how every major decisions happening at the Club now comes with “If Mikel didn’t intervene” it wouldn’t happened. Hopefully it ends well. Too much bakers fcuk the cake up!

“35 mil for 28 year old Christian Eriksen would be a terrible, terrible transfer.”

And he’s fuck ugly.

Uwot?

Apparently PSG still want Gwen Dozy. As do Athletico. Who also want Laca.so do Juventus who also want Bell end. Also Fiorentina have dropped out for Torreirra because Torino now want him. Napoli can’t afford Sokratis so apparently Roma now interested.Aston Villa still want Martinez.
