New Le Grove design drop + Slow going on the transfer front

by .

WELCOME to the NEW Le Grove design template. It’s quite embarrassing that I work in a creative job and I left it 8 years to address the weirdness of how it looked. So here we are. There are still some little bits being tidied up, but the overall objective was to give the site a minimalist feel whilst maintaining the character and bits that made it work.

  • The site has been built with mobile in mind, a whopping 83% of you visit via mobile. I’ve made the images full bleed. The site doesn’t wobble when you scroll now. The text hugs the width of your device and I used a more legible font.
  • The comments font will be made a little bigger. Again, it wasn’t broken, we’ve had 2.5m comments over 13 years, but I’ve made them hug the sides so there’s less scrolling
  • I’ve updated the Rules of the blog for 2020. This is the blog of love, let’s keep it that way. I’ve also added a submission form. If you see something you dislike… ‘JOHN TERRY IS THE BEST HUMAN’… submit the link and I’ll remove it. I don’t read every comment and they nest after 150. If you let me know something bad is going down, I’ll fix it.
  • I’ll have a new newsletter template read by Friday. Submit your e-mail address on the site to land a daily dose of Le Grove. Apologies for whatever is landing in your mailbox right now. That is me having a crack at coding.

That’s about it I think?

Now onto the good stuff. TRANSFERS!

Villa has offered close to £20m for Emi Martinez. A week out in the desert with no midfield food and suddenly, that fee looks like the tastiest fee we ever did see. I’m not sure the move is great for the keeper. Villa lacks the profile of Arsenal. It also shows him running away from a challenge. I still think he’s the better keeper, but if the choice is a good backup or a midfielder that can create and move, I’m going to want the midfielder.

David Ornstein did a transfer news drop and not much has moved. There’s a bit of panic in the air from fans worried that this is our lot for the summer. I honestly don’t think we should worry. The summer is slow because teams have had next to no time to prepare for the season. As the month powers on, expect more moves.

Though Matteo G has soiled his rep somewhat, I struggle to believe no one in Europe will take a chance on taming him. He’s on next to no money and his stats are appealing. Lacazette will find someone that needs his goals, I think Atleti looks good for him, but we’ll see. Kola will go, Sokratis will go, and I suspect Cal Chambers will find a new home.  Someone critiqued me adding Reiss onto the list, look, I just repeat what I’ve heard. I like the player, but if there’s an £18m bid for him, don’t be shocked if we say yes.

I also think it’s interesting that we’re still linked with the same two midfielders. Aouar and Partey. Might go nowhere, but my take on us not being linked to a plan be is that we’re just trying to raise the cash for those two. We have the price, we know the players are interested, we just need to sell, sell, sell.

Villa looking to sign a Brentford strikers for £28m… think we can expect to make some money on our players.

Finally, Hector Bellerin has invested in a sustainable club. I love him. He puts his money where his mouth is and his mouth is usually on something that matters. Good on him. I hope the club is a success.

Right, short post today, I’ll see you in the NEW comments! x

Think the crux of problem with Emi is many now fancy him as the #1.

For me he starts season, have to reward his form with a place in starting XI.

Guns of SF

FA CUP and Carabao Cup.
Emi deserves to keep his place. Leno has not done anything to justify keeping his place, when healthy.
Emi is the better keeper no doubt.
Wonder that Leno would fetch on the market?

Champagne Charlie

Karim
Doesn’t surprise me at all, and never saw Rennes selling him this window in a depressed market – he’s a massive fee in waiting with those suitors. He has a breakout season in the CL and he’s a clear 85 million

Sal
I don’t disagree, he starts the season in goal if he stays. But when we want midfielders and are struggling to raise funds he’s an obvious out, cannot agree with picking him ahead of Leno from a sales perspective.

Habesha Gooner

It’s too early to call Martinez is better than Leno yet. He hasn’t even played enough times at the top level yet. And some how both are around the same age. Yes he needs to get the opportunity but now isn’t the time to say he is better on the back of 15 games while there is no pressure from fans. And Leno will probably fetch between 25 to 30 mil.

Been lurking on here for over a year Pedro, never commented yet, but love the content, the amount of work and writing you do, and the new look is slick, well done. Fuck spurs x

Did you ever see Henry play?

Ridiculous comment

Pierre

Left side “Why are they mugs if they don’t rate Eddie? Your very insolent for someone who cries victim a lot Pierre” Did you see the comments aimed at Eddie during the game v liverpool, he was playing against possibly the best centre back pairing in europe and had no help whatsoever from Aubameyang or Saka who were assigned to stay wide to thwart the liverpool full backs , a tactic that worked well I must add. This is why they are mugs, as they haven’t an understanding of the game and the difficulties a striker faces. Have a look… Read more »

Draxler linked with Leeds, how the mighty have fallen. Would have loved to have had him at the Arsenal before he went to PSG and wasted his career. Such a shame for a wonderfully talented player.

Pierre

Northbanker Henry was very clever , he conserved his energy for when he needed it most …when he was on the ball. He would often be seen in the opposition half looking like he wasn’t interested , but of course he was just waiting for the likes of Vieira to win the ball to give to Bergkamp…..and then he’d make his move and come back from an offside position to pounce. If you are suggesting that Henry was wasting energy charging all over the pitch, then you are wrong . Henry was very similar to Messi in how his brain… Read more »

What about Martinez, Chambers and £20m for Grealish?

luisfelipehsr

I think that our lack of movement in the middle isn’t strategical at all, but a symptom of the total lack of ability to do combinations on the final third. We are predictable because attacks that only use the sides are predictable and the easiest to pull off. At least Tierney looks at the box before crossing, but most most of the times it’s always the touchline cross back to the middle hoping that someone hits the ball. There’s almost no movement around each other in our front 3, no wonder they barely do any pass at all to one… Read more »

Why only 20 million, why not 20p since you’re the greatest negotiator known to mankind, like Trump?

it’s just that benny wants to dump average players on Villa for their best player that saved them from relegation last season.
It’s as if he has a magic spell to cast on Villa during negotiations.

“Let’s hope Pepe learns how to beat a defense with single touches, triangulations and diagonals, instead of “brute force”.”

I know Guns of SF gave you the credit of a “good post”, but I have to say that a lot of it was gobbledegook to me.
Then again , credit from guns of sf is like the kiss of death

I’m not sure even in our wildest imagination could Pepe be accused of brute force.

And as for
“The squad building the past few years was so nonsensical and unlucky. ”

I’m not sure how that works.

Mr Serge

I for one am looking forward to the new season for the first time in 7 years Shane I can’t shout it from the stands but I am full of optimism

Good job on the new look Pedro it’s lovely

Mr Serge

Who’s Shane lol 🤣

So latest news from Italy is that in order to remove Sokratis from the wage bill, Arsenal will grant him a free release so he can sign a long term contract with De Laurentiis’s club.

After Mhkitaryan also released on a free and with Kolasinac rumoured to be leaving on loan, it looks like Arsenal may remove players from the wage bill, but will not raise any cash for it.

Valentin

Did the font just changed?
They seems to be slightly thicker.

Love the updates and looking forward to a far greater le-grove experience and a successful season. COYG!!!

Bellerins mouth is usually on something that matters lol Pedro was that line supposed to be so suggestive?

China1

Sok leaving on a free makes no sense

It’s not like we’re asking for 30m for him. Suggestions that it’s just a few mil. Meanwhile Napoli claiming poverty after they’ve already spent a small fortune this summer.

They can just smell arsenals weakness and are probing for us to bite. Free transfer to pay his wages? He’s not on 250k a week. Get serious Napoli…

China1

Pierre you think auba wouldn’t like to play CF at arsenal what absolute rubbish lol

Auba is already working his ass off on the left getting up and down and is also expected to finish off every move since he scores all our goals

Auba’s role is harder than Nketiah’s, and he’s doing a better job of it. I know it’s upsetting to hear, but it’s true

Goobergooner

Haha Marko from last post (sorry this is so late).

It’s not that our defenders are totally shit, just prone to a good error or 2. It’s just they aren’t value for money. The club’s that can pay their wages don’t want them. The club’s that want them can’t pay out a (significant) transfer fee and also pay their wages.
It’s a lose lose the old socialist wage policy based on world class wages paid to Europa level players.
Even English premium for chambers and holding won’t bring in much either.

Jamie

Since when has Özil’s manager been Joorabchian? According to the Mirror

“Agent Kia Joorabchian has blasted Arsenal for failing to give his client Mesut Ozil sufficient game time in recent seasons.”

Ashwin Gunner

We should have sold Ozil to ManU when we had the chance. But Wenger’s ship was sinking and he didn’t want to lose another player to them. He gave Ozil a big mighty deal.

But he is not the worst thing Wenger has done. We have repeatedly renewed Abou Diaby’s contract and all he did was to spend time on the treatment table.

Ashwin Gunner

Freddie

Ha ha.. it does not. He is a cheapskate.

Emiratesstroller

Valentin

Both Mkhitaryan and Sokratis are in their 30s and were in final year of contract. They were also surplus to requirement.

No-one is realistically going to pay a transfer fee on top of the huge wages being earned for such players.

Arsenal’s priority is to offload such players by any means they can and to be perfectly frank
I don’t think that Arsenal expected a transfer fee.

Frankly as I previously posted I think that Arsenal will struggle to generate fees in this transfer window, because of the high wages being paid by the club.

Pedro

Ashwin,

Great spot again! 😂😂😂

Tony

Emi has ticked all the boxes to stay as our starting keeper. All the “what ifs”, such as playing in front of stadium crowds etc is just supposition and conjecture. If Leno is back between the sticks as our No 1, teams will just exploit Leno’s poor aerial ability, which in fact greatly reduces Leno’s ability to command his box area leaving our defenders to lack confidence in the air individually and collectively. Emi’s distribution is far better than nervy Leno’s, especially paying out from the back. I appreciate we have 2 new over 6′ CBs who should help Leno… Read more »

Simple question: Has any club made a bid for Leno?

If not, why not?

Gonsterous

Funny how, after raul left, we haven’t heard a peep from kia about the club. He ran his mouth, which got raul investigated and thankfully fired.

But the downside is, none of the remaining people onboard seem to know how to sell players.

Gonsterous

Tony

Maybe because he isn’t for sale. I mean, why is no one bidding for tierney? Does that mean he’s shite?

Salman

I think it’s waiting game .. Arteta said if we need to wait for the right player we will wait .

“He IN LOVE with Aouar “ They ARE COMING

Tony

Gons
Has Emi been formally put on our transfer list?

He’s only made noises that he wants to be no 1 to stay at the club.

I believe there will be small margins for 4th, 5th & 6th places this season and Emi could be the difference to achieving Arteta’s KPI than not. Ditto AMN as a utility or tactical player for certain matches.

Gonsterous

Also when bidding for a player. Many factors come into place. Is the player important to the first team. Leno wasn’t dropped, he got injured, so yes he’s important.
Then how much did the club buy the player for previously. We played about 25m for Him
Will we take a loss to sell him. No, so that means Leno costs at least 10m more than Martinez.
Anyone want to bid 30m+ for a GK. Not many team need a GK and not many teams can afford a 30m+ GK.

Gonsterous

I can also see the reluctance to make emi the no. 1 keeper, since we invested on Leno and if he becomes a bench player, he’s value goes down. But martinez definitely earned a chance to be a contender for the no.1 spot.

Tony

Gons
Leno’s limitations are greater than Emis. He may have got injured but his command of the box and errors cost us more points than Emi has.

Leno isn’t going to improve his genetic height or his ability to snuff out crosses or not be error prone that has blighted his career in Germany and the PL.

Let’s agree to disagree and it’s time for me to train for the next 90 minutes or so.

You or I cannot affect the outcome just make our feelings/points known, which we have done.

Bad timing about the Kia comment, he just discussed the Ozil situation last night in an interview.

Pierre

I would say that unless there is more to the Kia Interview regarding Ozil, then he is talking a lot of sense. Kia ‘”The Ozil situation should have been resolved two years ago,’ he told Talksport via The Metro. ‘What is the point of a player sitting and not playing? Who gains from that? ‘The club doesn’t gain from that. The player is ageing, he doesn’t gain from that. The agent doesn’t gain from that. ‘I mean, I’m not exactly sure other than the fact the player has maybe a monetary gain from getting an income I don’t think anybody… Read more »

Of course he does, he’s forgetting that Ozil is a leach that’s not interested in playing football though. We have been trying to resolve the situation for at least a year and Ozil is refusing to move.

Unless you think we should have just given him 36m to leave last year? You probably do don’t you?

Tom

The best part of the Kia Ozil comment was him not wanting to talk about Ozil and his agent lol. Sid, Jose’s teams have always played a risk averse football even when he had some of the best midfielders available in his service. That’s the main reason he never got the Barca job even though for a while he was a clear favorite over Guardiola. Arteta ,on the other hand, is trying to make chicken salad out of chicken shit of a midfield, so your Arteta / Jose comparison is fucking dumb, and I’m telling you this for a small… Read more »

Excuses excuses, its understandable vs man c, liverpool, but not vs watford, brighton, aston villa
Arteta is a hipster Mourinho, at best simeone, all of his signings have been 90% defensive, if our midfield is so shit that should be priority or the signings would be 50% defense 50%midfield.
Diet Pep has been captured on camera at man c encouraging players to commit fouls. Its in him

Im telling you for free!

Gonsterous

We have been trying to get rid of oil ever since Wenger left. If the player doesn’t want to move, there’s nothing the club can do. We have frozen him out and he still won’t budge.

Tom

Sid, you must have me confused with Pedro.
I don’t make excuses for Arteta but state readily available facts.
We’ll see the evolution of his squad and style of play this coming season.
It’s his team now

Tactical fouls is a necessary evil and not something I have a problem with.
That’s why they have refs in the game.

Valentin

What Kia’s latest TalkSport interview really illustrate is how he is trying to increase his own prestige/visibility. I do not see what benefit at this juncture going to TalkSport can bring to his clients.
In most of his previous TalkSport interviews, He made a fool of himself and he talked about things at Arsenal that he should not have. Exposing Arsenal dirty laundry and revealing how closed to Raul he was, was definitely not smart. BTW despite all his bluster, he is still not suing the Athletic, so why should we believe a word of what he says?

Valentin

Tom, I would not go as far as saying that this is Arteta’s team yet. Apart from Gabriel and Willian who he brought, the rest were there before he joined. He is in a position where because of financial constraints and COVID-19 he can’t shape the team as much as he would like. From example it is clear he can’t bring midfielders of the quality and characteristics he wants. Also he can’t get rid of players he does not want while still extracting decent value for them. We will have to wait 2 years or at least 2 more transfer… Read more »

Tom

I can definitely see both sides of the Leno/Martinez debate…….the only thing I would add though is that quality number two can be the difference between a successful cup run and a failure.
Looking at Almunia in the CL final and his body positioning for both Barca goals still gives me nightmares.

Tom

Val
I didn’t mean it as this was his hand picked team with every player to his liking.
It is , however , his team in regards to how much time and influence he’s had over the players to execute at least partially his vision of what kinda of football he wants to play.

Sid

‘Tactical fouls is a necessary evil and not something I have a problem with.
That’s why they have refs in the game.’

It depends on the managers mindset, Pep seems to encourage players to roll and exagerate when fouled, not to commit fouls, Wenger and Klopp would not encourage it from looking from stats.

Up 4 grabs now

Morning, If martinez starts on Saturday, (and in my opinion I think he should) then him and leno battle it out across the season for the number 1 slot, unless someone comes and offers good money for leno. Martinez earned the right to stay in goal at the back end of last season. He wasn’t playing against Doncaster,Luton or Plymouth! We were playing city, Chelsea the bindippers and he was excellent. So he’s been here 10 years, mostly on loan, and for 8 out 10 of those years he had a manager who wouldn’t drop his favourites. Emery brought in… Read more »

Tom

“It depends on the managers mindset, Pep seems to encourage players to roll and exagerate when fouled, not to commit fouls, Wenger and Klopp would not encourage it from looking from stats.“

Yet, Wenger had no problem with his players appealing for throw ins and corners knowing full well the ball went off of them.

Up 4 grabs now

Unless your number one keeper gets a long term injury.
Your number two keeper doesn’t have to be top quality.

Back in the day keepers played every game, league games, cups and Europe.

Keepers dont needed to be rested, they dont have the same stresses to their bodies like outfield players do.

If we do sell leno bring in a youngish keeper or and old timer who plays 3 or 4 games max a season.
Even the bindippers and city who last season loss their keepers for a period of time were fine.

Thaatarsenalguy

Sid

“Yet, Wenger had no problem with his players appealing for throw ins and corners knowing full well the ball went off of them”

More to do with him getting senile and deteriorating eyesight, Pierre and CG are examples of problems senior citizens face.

Habesha Gooner

Oh FFS. Luiz now ruled out with a neck injury and arteta plans to keep hold of holding. No matter how you look at it that’s a lot of indecisiveness from arteta. Our midfield renovation and player sales in defense has been horrific. He needs to let go of some players.

andy1886

Lol, Sid has a very short memory. Wenger’s Arsenal were regularly hauled up in front of the FA for disciplinary hearings when he was winning titles. It got to the point where the club told him to sort it out because it was embarrassing. That was a mistake in my view, we went too far the other way and got bullied by just about every other team after that..

Freddie Ljungberg

HG

Looks like he could be out for a while and Mustafi, Chambers and Mari all still not fully fit. Hope we don’t rock up with 2 CBs we’ve been trying to get rid of in Sok and Holding a the weekend.

Just throw in Saliba and Gabriel from the start, the sooner they adapt the better. Better to do it when we have a couple of easier games.

Habesha Gooner

A transfer frenzy might be coming too. Lots of teams haven’t done enough yet in the market. I can see some English team making a bid for chambers. Elneny will find a home too. I don’t know about the rest though.

Leftside

I don’t think we’ll see much activity, all well and good wanting sales but who will want these players in addition to their salary demands? If good bids come in we’re at a point where unpopular sales will be required.

Gonsterous

Valentin

Gabriel , William, soares, mari, luiz and Chaka are all artetas signing. He had the option to reject them but he didn’t, making them players that he bought into the team.
If it’s only about buying first 11 players, then we could say emery didn’t have a lot of his players as well.

Tom

Andy, in all fairness I don’t think it was Wenger’s doing but rather the type of players he inherited and brought in initially that made Arsenal as hard nosed as they were.
Adams, Keown, Vieira, Lehmann, FL, Fabregas, Cole ….. each one had more Shithousery about them than this Arsenal squad put together bar Guendouzi.

andy1886

Tom, I’m sure that you’re right, the older players were as big an influence on how we played as Wenger was – probably a good thing as I doubt we’d have won anywhere near as much if they hadn’t been. I would have preferred that AW told the board to keep their noses out and continued in that fashion. It would certainly have put the likes of Big Sam and Pulis in their places.

Freddie Ljungberg

Luiz out up to 6 weeks. Throw Gabriel and Saliba in at the deep end, better than persisting with the other wasters.

Pierre

Fred
“Just throw in Saliba and Gabriel from the start, the sooner they adapt the better. Better to do it when we have a couple of easier games.”

Great idea , let’s start all our new players and expect them to gel.

And when they don’t, I would expect the likes of you to whinge like hell.

andy1886

We could see Tierney playing as a CB again with AMN on the left. Depends what formation MA plays for the first few games.

Graham62

Pierre

The parasite that is Mr Kia Joorabchian has to realise why this situation with Ozil has not been resolved.

It’s because of “leeches” like him that we are in this position. Advising your client to dig their heels in and putting negative thoughts into their mind that will ultimately benefit them( and Kia of course) but, at the same time, be detrimental to the club.

The problem with Ozil is it’s always all about him.

Makes me want to vomit.

Jamie

Pierre lashing out at everyone. Cheer up, lad. Watch the Ozil highlight reel on YouTube.

Pierre

Graham Actually, kia said that the situation didn’t benefit the agent. The club is at fault for the Ozil situation, firstly for giving him a ridiculous contract, meaning he was basically unsellable. 2nd for employing a manager (Emery) who would never see eye to eye with him. 3rd for demanding the players to have a cut in wages and then dropping him for questioning this decision, which was a pity as ozil/arteta had a good working relationship up until that point, and most importantly results were going very well in the league before lockdown with Ozil starting compared to post… Read more »

He let in an awful goal in the Championship final against Fulham. Does this move raise enough funds for a CM? Like Martinez, Raya is homegrown. Looks like Sokratis will be off to Napoli. Dry your tears sock boy.

I would rather give our 2 new highly talented CBs a chance instead of playing Sok and Holding that we already know isn’t good enough. Easier for CBs to adapt than a CM for example. And yes I’d like our other 2 signings to play too since they’re already adapted to the league.

I always have patience with players if the talent and application are there. What I don’t do is cling on to washed up has beens out of some warped player over club mentality so I can understand your confusion.

Is the Athletic worth paying for?

Habesha Gooner

Lots of speculation but as it stands it will be Holding and Saliba who will start. Gabriel has had like two training sessions so far. Luiz is out so may be Saliba, Holding and Tierney in a 3 man defense. It’s ridiculous that we still have 9 CBs where 8 of them won’t move this window though. It’s ridiculous.

Pierre,
Anything that benefits Ozil benefits his agent.
Ozil is not your run of the mill footballer who’s money train will pull to a screeching halt once he stops playing.
He may not be able to match his Arsenal wages ever again but his future income ,as well his considerable wealth, will always need looking after and his agent seems well positioned to have this job for as long as his advice remains fiduciary.

Pierre You are 100% correct, the club was at fault for giving him such “a ridiculous contract”. As for the “Emery” and “salary cut” scenarios, there are other things that must be taken into consideration before we start pointing the fingers at others. Something that Ozil is brilliant at. For me, as a fan and armchair critic, Ozil’s attitude has always stunk.
