Need… a fix… of transfer news

by .

Ok, so it’s been a little slower on the feeds today.

No new players.

I feel empty and sad.

Where are my new players?

There are a few tidbits buzzing around.

Matteo G is not on the PSG wanted list now, they apparently switched things up to Hector Bellerin. I read a journo say that actually, they aren’t interested in Hector, we’ve offered him to them. Cheeky.

Back to Matteo.

It’s starting to look a little worrying for the 21-year-old ball progressor. Does his reputation precede him? Possibly. Or the market is just slow. If Cassano and Balotelli could consistently find good clubs, I’m pretty sure we’ll find a home for a young French U21 with a lot of experience under his belt.

There was an amazing story doing the rounds that Unai Emery is in for Martinez if he doesn’t seal a deal with Arsenal. Imagine wanting to go back to a coach with about as much sauce as a pack of Ryvita?

Big Ken Friar is off the board and into the PRESIDENT FOR LIFE position. Good for him. Ken Friar has been an incredible servant for Arsenal and I love him even more for allegedly 1) Being one of the first to call time on Unai Emery 2) Being the guy that wanted more oversight for Don Raul.

He exits head held high. If he was part of the siren crew, we should all be very grateful for his service. He’s played a massive role in saving Arsenal.

It’ll be very interesting to see how Arsenal shape the boardroom in his absence. It’s clear that bringing in someone like Tim Lewis added some incisive legal expertise, as well as some fan love. I wonder if they’ll continue to add more people like that? Who is our tech guy? Who is our brand expert? Would we consider an explayer for a bit of prestige? Do they need an advertising guy that ‘gets’ the internet?

I do have to say, I’d love to see Ian Wright make an appearance. He’s the true embodiment of what it is to be an Arsenal statesman. He’s the perfect representative for a younger more modern boardroom. Wrighty is cross-generational in appeal. Like, who doesn’t love him? He speaks to the players, he speaks to the fans, he embodies the class of Arsenal, but with a contemporary twist. What’s not to like about the idea?

Some may question what expertise an explayer would offer, I’m not so sure that’s a problem at board level. I think putting explayers in charge of technical positions can sometimes be problematic. AC Milan have had all sorts of issues with Maldini. They had to sack Boban. I also think Juve might run into trouble with their strong clique of salaried players who pushed Pirlo into the management role very early. United’s class of 92 might not have board seats, but they’ve certainly influenced some bang-average decision making there.

… but at board level, you need to find balance. Industry expertise can be balanced by Arsenal expertise. In Wright, you have someone that understands the culture of the club, the fans, and the city, so I think it’d be great. I am biased though.

Not sure whether Josh wants to make moves like that, but it’s a nice thought.

To change the topic… Fans will be BACK in the stadium for Sheffield United on October 3. The club is balloting who can go. It’ll be super weird, no doubt, but fuck it, at least we’ll have some people in the ground. I’m no covid expert, but the protests around America didn’t result in massive spikes. If everyone wears a mask, hopefully, we can bring more fans back into the fold.

Cagigao has spoken about Arsenal and he said what we’re all feeling.

“The club has a very good head coach & are not far from building a winning team, a lot of good groundwork has been laid. Wherever the future takes me, I will never forget my time at the club & feel privileged to have played my part”

What a superstar.

Right, that’s all I have time for today. Let’s hope Arsenal speed up the news so I can get my FIX OF TRANSFER GOODNESS.

TT “ES I would be astonished if there was any clauses in Ozil’s contract that states he has to play or at least play a number of games.” Of course there isn’t…pay him off, it’s a no win situation if he stays at the club and doesn’t play ….especially if we have a bad start to the season, which is a possibility as there is no guarantee that the quality of our football will improve against the lower sides unless we improve our creativity in the team. The last thing Arteta would need is being questioned as to why Ozil… Read more »

Ian Wright on Stan’s BoD? Love the idea but fear it’s wishful thinking.

James wood.

Arteta still in Contract talks with Maitland-Niles.

Maitland evidently does not see himself in the
full back role.?
Where would Southgate play him.?

Ian Wright would have to quit working as a pundit to be on the board. I can’t imagine a board member who’s so much in the public eye. I don’t think it’s the Kroenke style.

“Fiorentina are trying to push for a two-year loan deal with an obligation to buy, with an initial fee of £8 million being paid to Arsenal, with a future fee of around £20 million owed to the Gunner”

This is where silent Stan should cough up the owed £20m to our current kitty and then reclaim the owed £20m in 12 months time.

It’s 100% his club now after all.

James wood.

Would 100% love to see Wrighty in that job
But he’s a bit to truthful for some.?

Perhaps David O’Leary.

Champagne Charlie

Luteo

That’s his hallmark, surprised you’ve not seen how he’s very Dariano-esque in that regard. Doesn’t agree on something and it’s full tilt passive aggression totally absent of any humour, then the cherry on top is the gaslighting that he in fact is dealing with a person with issues.

Quite something really, never seen someone go from melt to moral high ground in such quick succession. Must be the Debbie gene.

andy1886

Niall Quinn is a smart guy, possibly too smart for the Kroenkes though.

I expect that Partey is a dead duck for financial reasons but we should be able to scrape up something for a half decent midfield addition.

One in the eye for the Hector haters if he does stay…

Uwot?

What about “ bonnie” Prince Charlie.Hes free now.Always thought he had the fans pulse? Or we could go out on a limb with DT & Troopz🤪

Vitima Kalua

Why has no one suggested giving Martin Keown a coaching role at Arsenal, after what he did with an average defense that took us to the champions league finals many seasons ago?
Is he past it? Or he’s controversial? Or anything?

Paul Scott

Nice post Pedz but please don’t suggest mask wearing . It was downgraded to common cold on the NHS website months ago. Cheers.

David O’Leary surely a strong candidate, but Wrighty would be a nice touch too.

I like David Seaman a lot, and I think Alan Smith is a good profile and long term ambassador of the football club.

Words on a Blog

How about Claude of AFTV fame for the Board?

He seems a reasonable and intelligent chap.

Words on a Blog

Or if Stan and Josh want proper intelligent oversight in the new Arsenal board, they could always go for Bamford, Dariano and Receding.

Uwot?

No champers. Have to disagree.Spunky seaman nice guy but thick as a plank & smudger smith is a flip flopper. Its bonnie Prince Charlie Nicholas or Nial Quinn ( experience with sunderland)Have never forgiven O’dreary after his antics at Leeds with us.Would consider Wright certainly.

Pierre

Personally, I would prefer the ban on fans attending games to continue until after the away games v city, liverpool and United.

Our job will be a whole lot easier as it has been proved that since lockdown the refs decisions have become more evenly balanced instead of favouring the home side, consequently the away team’s results have improved since lockdown.

It is natural for the refs to be influenced by the fans , they are only human after all.

Ian Wright doesn’t come across as the sharpest tool in the box. What qualifies him for such a role? What experience does he have? Reeks of clickbait on a slow news day.

Flamini should be on the board.

Ceballos doing his medical today apparently.

Just one step away now from getting Xhaka out of the starting XI, come on Edu you can do it.

I know the exact man for the job.?

Emiratesstroller

Pierre The point I made earlier today about Ozil is that the player is clearly being advised by his agent who is coincidentally a high powered lawyer and we have reached an impasse. Do we want to keep the player another 10 months? For that matter should we include him in the first team squad? Not playing Ozil as a member of the first team squad could be more problematic than some may assume particularly if the player is announcing that he is “match fit”. He could argue that not playing him when match fit is a “restraint of trade”.… Read more »

I rate Xhaka very highly.Incidentially as do all the managers who manage him.
including the Swiss National one who has just made him captain.

You clearly dont. But then again , you dont understand the dynamics of the game.
Its all about ,new players and transfer window histrionics with you.

Xhaka is staying – and he is the 1st name Arteta puts down on his team sheet.

You ll have to tell Arteta he is a c**t as well then.

I bet Guendouzi thought that the other big clubs would be clamouring for him.

If the papers are to be believed… he has been offered to PSG, Barcelona and Juve with nobody biting.

Ohhh that’s gotta hurt the old ego for the young upstart.

Hmmm… maybe Matteo you’re not as good as you and Emery thought you were…

Good shout on Alan Smith but Wrighty on the board in any boardroom? Can’t see it. I’ll be honest I don’t see it making a difference anyway honestly there’s important people at the club in important positions sure but it’s Edu and Arteta’s show now

Champagne Charlie

Freddie

It’s weird to me that you think every CM at the club has the same function or remit.

Arteta will be thankful to have midfield options for the first time at his disposal, but Partey will more than likely take the place of Ceballos with Aouar operating ahead in our “best” midfield trio.

This of course is heavily dependent on minimal acclimatisation to the league from both Partey and Aouar.

bacaryisgod

It sounds simple in a way. Ozil is on 350k a week. Not sure why we can’t pay him 250k a week to leave and he can sign a nice new spanking contract with some other team for say 150k a week He picks up a cool 2.5m extra but the downside is that he might have to actually play. We say 100k a week in salary which we all know is needed. Have a nasty feeling things aren’t that simple. Maybe there’s a loyalty clause so he gets a nice fat bonus at the end of the contract. Who… Read more »

Freddie Ljungberg

CC

Who thinks that? Name one thing Xhaka does better than Ceballos that makes him so important? He’s not better defensively, nor offensively, he’s much less mobile, can’t handle pressure and doesn’t progress play as well.

But sure, play him for some weird reason. Guess it’s because he’s been at the club for 4 years and you feel some weird loyalty to him even though he’s been largely awful.

bacaryisgod

As for a board member, I think the logical choice would be Bergkamp. Henry would obviously be an option but he’s got punditry commitments. Another option would be Sol Campbell, a little prickly perhaps but clearly like Bergkamp and Henry he’s a smart man.

Marko

Partey will more than likely take the place of Ceballos with Aouar operating ahead in our “best” midfield trio.

I predict that Ceballos assuming that he maintains some of the good form he’s shown since the restart will replace Xhaka by and large. It makes sense to me he can easily replace what Granit offers to the team and Partey will almost certainly start every game if he’s signed

bacaryisgod

damn, totally slipped my mind that Thierry snuck off to Canada to try to be a manager again.

Marko

Again not to start another Xhaka debate (God knows they’re always fun) but if we bring in two midfielders who are better than him and bring back Ceballos who has out performed him then it’s logical to think that his game time and place in the starting 11 is under threat

Marc

Freddie

I wouldn’t worry about Xhaka – once we have better options and fans are back in the ground even if Arteta won’t drop him the fans will do the job.

Left testicle

Overmars, Bergkamp, Henry and to a lesser extent Campbell.

Champagne Charlie

Freddie Look, this ridiculous leaning you’re doing on stats from the tail end of last season is dull af. I keep hearing about how Arteta changed things to nullify Xhaka when the reality is that he shoehorned an attacking midfielder into a deeper position for the first time in his career because he never had midfield options he wanted. That’s not making allowances for Xhaka, that’s making them for Ceballos so we get a functioning midfield dynamic. You’d see that if it wasn’t such a bore-fest of an agenda against Xhaka. Ceballos isn’t a better passer, he’s certainly not better… Read more »

I don’t know what Henry’s up to at the moment but all of the others are involved in a more direct / hands on role at clubs at the moment. Going onto the Board might not appeal to them.

Freddie Ljungberg

CC

Oh, it’s an agenda against Xhaka, give me a fucking break.

We’ll see when the season starts but I’m pretty sure that if we sign Partey, Xhaka will be on the bench slicing oranges, aka his best position.
Think we’ve taken this as far as we can, no need going over the same ground again.

bacaryisgod

Freddie-why waste so much energy on Xhaka. From what I could tell, he formed a decent partnership with Ceballos. If Ceballos returns and we can sign a better midfielder that Xhaka then I’ll be the first one recommending he goes to the bench.

I don’t think you’ll find too many people preferring a Xhaka-Ceballos partnership over a Partey-Ceballos partnership (even though most people are just trusting Partey is a quality player without having seen him much)

Either way, Xhaka is a decent option for us to have and he’s been generally playing well under Arteta.

To he h9nest CC, I guess that a Ceballis / Partey combo will replace Xhaka and that Aouar will be part of a mobile midfield triumvirate. If the UAE thing is credible and Ozil continues to play hardball, loan him to a Championship team, or Celtic, to help toughen him up. Good for his future. There’s always funds if Edu and Arteta look hard enough. We have a fantastic collection of contemporary grown men ready for pastures new. Fully expect multiple iterations, but I think our most consistent and solid offering will be Xhaka and Partey at a base, with Aouar ahead. I also see Ceballos operating ahead more as Aouar acclimates to the league. I’d be more confident of Partey adapting quicker given he’s more established and mature in his game. Aouar is still a talent let’s not forget, it’s asking a… Read more »

Pedro,

What does your source says about Pepe? Today, I have heard the same rumor that we are offering Pepe to any interested parties for about £40 millions.
It does kind of make sense, but I can see two issues with it. Firstly Kroenke are unlikely to sanction an immediate depreciation of £30 millions on an asset. Secondly, I can see Willian, Saka and Nelson rotating on the wing, but even with Aouar we are still short in the CAM and Wingers department even if AMN and Tierney could do a job on the wing-back role.

With all the talk of strengthening the mid, how do Willock and ESR figure?
We assume they will not step up and only be subs.

” I’ve been crystal clear on matters regarding Xhaka, and have been vindicated numerous times over.2

Well let’s get one crystal clear fact out there about Xhaka. 20 odd years making CL football we sign Xhaka and we haven’t been in it since.

Anyone who thinks who can make top 4 without a competent midfield needs to up their medication.

How much do we have outstanding on the Pepe deal? Pretty sure it’d be more than the £40 million Valentin suggested we’ve offered him to clubs for.

I agree about all our new players needing an adaptation period. I’m intrigued with how Arteta sets out to play with the new players. I’m not convinced at all he will retain those players he used out of necessity last season – but that does NOT mean he thinks they are shit. But the 32-year-old striker isn’t going to team up with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo in Andrea Pirlo’s first-team, instead Brighenti will join the club’s U23 team.

Veteran Brighenti will fill one of the quota places for over-age players and will be at least nine years older than the majority of his team-mates.

I don’t suppose ours is a proper board. We don’t even have a CEO. Typically the CEO is the conduit to, and sits on, the board. Is Vinai attending by invitation? Just a ridiculous situation.

Ex players should become a BoD just because they have passion, articulate, and look smart. What’s the individual bringing to the table? He’s part of the team (BoDs) giving direction to and setting goals for the CEO. You don’t see our lovely Adams sitting there so you?

It turns out being vindicated on a player now means that player just being a little less shit than before.

That or player being an important first team player as club deteriorates and declined.

It’s a very strange argument people are having honestly I don’t see how anyone can argue that if we bring in 3 players who are better and perform better than someone then that someone is going to see less game time than previous. Maybe I should have worded it that way instead of mentioning Xhaka by name. Oh fuck I just did it

Useroz

If we buy proper midfielders in this TW the most popular Xhara issue would sort itself out.

Once the new (hopefully two) midfielders settle in and perform more or less to expectation ,the pecking order would become clear depending who else’s around eg Guendouzi, Elneny, Torreira, Willock, ESR, Ceballos. I suspect Xhara still has a role then, until we need more funds!

I wonder where it ends though for Charlie like what’s the limit. Like someone like myself sees us signing up the likes of Partey, Aouar and Ceballos and thinks yeah his game time and starting position is going to be affected by their arrivals while charlie still sees him as instrumental. I think we’re approaching the problem from the wrong angle. We need to bring Ozil in from the cold – we should arrange a team building exercise where Ozil and Xhaka are dropped deep into Siberia for 7 days, just a pity we forget where we dropped them when it’s time to pick them up again.

Champagne Charlie

“First off it’s complete bias when you disregard stats that show Ceballos outforming Xhaka and say he’s not a better passer“ Sounds incredibly reductive and opportunistic. So Ceballos passes more and tackles more at the tail end of last season and that makes him superior in all facets? Works out lovely doesn’t it? Marc that wouldn’t work

Xhaka would put ozil on his back and carry him 6000 miles home, then fine himself and ozil 7 months salary for being 7 months late for training
