Gabriel announced + Hector for £30m? Pfft + 2 elite midfielders on radar

by .

WELCOME, GABRIEL!

Arsenal finally announced the Brazilian defender. They kept it fresh and teased the announcement with a group chat call between Luiz and Willian.

‘Who was Guest number 3 going to be on the call?’

I thought it was going to be Kia, but that was a June gag, I should have been wiser. It was Gabriel!

The player comes with a fine reputation as a clean-tackling, ball-winning, aggressive, tall, technically gifted, POWERHOUSE defender for the ages. Yes, I said clean-tackling.

Gabriel is 6ft3, Saliba is 6ft4, and they are very unlikely to be racking up red cards like we’ve seen this season. These two signings will take a while to settle, but my word, could they be something special if they reach their full potential.

Things started to get even more exciting in the afternoon when David Ornstein let loose the rumour that PSG are chasing down Hector Bellerin for about £30m. The number seems low for a really decent right back. PSG of all clubs can’t claim poverty. I expect the full deal to be closer to £40m, not because I know anything, but because that’s the number that would allow me to emotionally accept losing a player I really, really like.

I understand that he’s not been at the races of late, but he still megged Mané at the weekend and we’ve just been through too much to let him go without a mini fight. That’d put a lot of weight on the shoulders of AMN, but hey, that’s top-flight football.

The additional story is that we’re also in talks for Aouar and Partey. That’s damp patch inducing amounts of talent right there. If we pull that off, it’s the best summer in 20 years. We’d be contending for the title 2021-22. It would be INCREDIBLE.

Anyway, there’s a small matter of being skint to deal with.

The way I’d imagine Arsenal see that panning out is hoping for the big swap deal gambit. Atleti are leaking to the press that they want the goals of Lacazette next season. We have heard plenty of rumblings that Lyon would love Matteo (remember, despite the CL heroics, they flatlined to 7th in Ligue 1). That would be a near cost-neutral wage swap-out.

IT WOULD ALSO BE AMAZING I THINK I’D DO A LITTLE DANCE IF IT HAPPENED.

I know we’re really losing our minds with speculation, but it’s clear we’d need a plan to replace the Lacazette goals if we lose the Frenchman.

Well, The Daily Record, a paper from Scotland, reckon we’re very interested in Odsonne Édouard. The 22-year-old goal machine is 6ft 2 and tantalizingly, he has a mere 2 years left on his deal. The rumour is we’re looking to ship £25m for him. I think he has huge potential and who better to learn your Premier League trade from than Auba?

I know a lot has to happen to make these moves real, but honestly, we haven’t had a summer of ‘links’ this good since that Twitter goat said we were in for Wayne Rooney.

Every link makes sense. There are no super-agents hanging around. There’s a lot of future in the deals.

I love it.

Wake me up when all the players are on the .com. Until then, I’ll see your wonderful faces in the comments section.

‘ The stuff I have to read here. So dribbling is now the essence of defining a fullback.’

Actually dribbling is one of the qualities that a top full back should have. It is not the defining essence, those words are yours to throw up a faux argument.
Good dribbling one of the things they share with wingers, which is why most full backs start out as wingers. Good dribbling is how you get out of close situations for a full back. Speed won’t count when your opposition is in your face.

salparadisenyc

Hector for me is nearly back to his best, not remotely an ideal sell but club is in the position its in. And the MF desperate for it.

Puts the £72m shelled for Pepe in perspective doesn’t it.

I don’t get how anyone can accuse Bellerin of having a soft underbelly. Criticize his performance as you please, but his personality is bold!

Yea, we definitely overpaid for Pepe but it is what it is.
More so when you consider that Liverpool are reportedly about to sign Ismaila Sarr from Watford. for £40 million.

I’m not dissing his off-field work. I can see why anyone will say he’s a strong character from what he does off-field.
My criticism is that his in-field performances doesn’t reek of ‘mentality’.
More so, that can’t be the reason you don’t sell a player, can it?

“Bellerin’ s only asset was his speed, besides that what else is he good for. He can’t dribble, has average passing ability, can’t cross the ball properly and is a sub-average defender. Now that is speed has waned, what else is left. He should have been sold when Barca came knocking 2-3 seasons ago. Time to go Hector, just in time for the Paris fashion week.” Never has more truth been spoken. I find it amazing that a lot of fans on twirra whant to keep Bellerin, AMN etc. As is, the squad is 8 people excess, 10 if our… Read more »

Yeah , I agree with Paulinho on mentality stuff. Bellerin may not always be at his best and sometimes he can be really mediocre but he has in him to raise his game at crunch times. Besides in his 5 years at Arsenal I don’t remember him committing many blunders. Kosscielney although very good overall still had many forgettable moments at Arsenal but not Bellerin. He is always 5+ out of 10. I hope we get to offload some of the others in our exit list than Bellerin but if we get 35M plus for him, we will sell I… Read more »

You’re back to regurgitating petty insults that I brushed off off-hand when Paulinho wrote. Somethings never change< do they.
Sigh.

Paulinho

“I’m dismissing the idea that ‘mentality’ is all the defense you have for Bellerin after all his time at Arsenal.”

You talk about straw-manning then proceed to do exactly the same thing.

I said mentality was his most important, not only, asset and you straw-manned you way to stupidity as result by not grasping that. He’s always been a mediocre footballer in many areas, and it’s mostly his mentality which has got him where he is,so distilling the argument down to just raw ability is as disingenuous as it is daft.

Marko

who’s one of the most versatile players in the league at the moment. We have got to stop with this garbage narrative once and for all. How is he versatile when he never gets picked for CM because he’s not trusted he only started at RB once since the restart in a game we were dogshit and he literally only starts at LWB in cup games with Tierney backing him up. He’s Gibbs 2.0 but without the necessaries to actually start LB in a back 4. But apparently he’s one of the most versatile full backs in the league. Look… Read more »

I repeatedly told you [written clearly in my post] that ‘mentality’ can’t be your defense for keeping Bellerin.
Then you extrapolated it to all the broader sports generalizations. That’s why it’s a straw argument.

What about Bellerin’s game reeks of mentality, endow me with some of your glorious illumination

I won’t hold my breath waiting for your answer.

How’s life these days?

Paulinho

“Paulinho
I repeatedly told you [written clearly in my post] that ‘mentality’ can’t be your defense for keeping Bellerin.”

It wasn’t my defence. Your evaluation of him was based on everything but mentality – which as I said, is daft and dense, considering how integral it is to his game, and indeed in general.

He not some hack of a footballer either, certainly no worse than most his contemporaries.

Chika

Dude, I don’t think anyone is saying Bellerin should be retained just because of his elite mentality. Defending his mentality is a push back against those who have termed him soft.

He (Ornstein) wrote: “Arsenal want to bring in Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey — he has a €50 million release clause — and conversations have taken place over the Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar.”

For the record, I’ve never been a fan of Bellerin. He was the consummate Wenger defender, one that we elevated too fast. For me he’s just a very presentable and likable player who relied on on,y one quality- pace. He’s wasn’t even that fast. When we played Liverpool as Anfield in August 2017, he [last covering player] lost the ball to Salah in the Liverpool half and couldn’t get anywhere near him. Salah dusted him by at least 5 yards and scored their third goal. They beat us 4-0 and Oxlade was gone the following day. I’ve seen slower player… Read more »

There is a constant debate about players who should leave and those who need to be recruited. So let’s make the process more simple. GOALKEEPER The club needs two top quality players. Funny how Bellerin’s detractors refuse to address the elephant in the room – that he’s wanted by this year’s two CL finalists as well as serial Scudetto winners Juve.

At a pinch I would suggest that they know a little more about what a good player looks like than the average Le Grove poster with their agendas.

And the idea that they haven’t watched him recently and don’t know what they are buying is hilarious.

Raulishuss

Absolute tr7. Notice sometimes in games bellerin might miscontrol or make a bad pass but it never affect him, he’s always positive and believes in his ability. Arteta has been riding a cool wave but when faces his first difficult period he’ll need personalities like hector more than even auba IMO

I’d let Bellerin go for 35 million if it’s to be reused in purchasing a central midfielder either of the two boys Partey or Aourur Bellerin is a very good player but in two years time he’s free to leave us. I can’t see him signing a new contract so for where we are at now sell him and replace with Soares and ANM. So quick recap on where we are right now as a club/fanbase. Currently we’re being strongly linked with Partey and Aouar who will likely cost upwards of 90-100 million but we (obviously) needs sales first before we can sign them. As of right now most of our outgoings seem to be loans (Holding, Kolasinac, Torreira) or released players likely no fees like Mhiktaryan possibly Sokratis and hopefully Ozil. Arsenal are unlikely to bring in BOTH Partey and Aouar in same transfer window particularly this year.

Partey should be the priority. My guess is that Arsenal will play “wait and see”

Pepe was bought for £72 million on a 5 year instalment plan.

Athletico Madrid will want payment for Partey up front as they don’t want to sell him and I am pretty sure the terms for Aouar will not be much more favourable.

salparadisenyc

I’d be shocked if we pulled both those players in this window.

Suspect we sell Laca and Bellerin maybe Torreira, loan Douzi out as his stock plummeted with whats happened. And bring in one marquee which is looking more like Aouar than Partey at moment as Atletico want the full amount.

Nobody has or wants to spend money in these Corona Virus days except the elite. Looking more like a loaners market for the rest.

People tend to forget how hard it is overcoming an injury and returning to whatever form one had before the injury. So for mental fortitude, we can give it to Bellerin for bouncing back. However lots of precedent has been set at Arsenal where we put sentimentality over reason. Cases in point: Eduardo, Ramsey, Wilshere, Diaby… We struggled to let go of these players despite prolonged poor form even after they returned from injury. Leno falls into the same category as bellerin. Both have reputations that precede them somewhat which means they’re our most valuable sellable assets. Both have adequate replacements already in the squad, and it’s up for debate wether either of them are even the best in their own positions. To me it seems like a no brainer. Bellerin and Leno sales would majority fund both Aouar and Partey deals. After that any one of torreira/Guen/ chambers could fetch between £10-£20m to make up the rest

They should do both, Cabellos is likely not a long term realistic solution. Another good season means even more transfer cost with Madrid being cnuts about it. Better to have his replacement in place this season then it doesn’t matter much if we can’t make a perm move work. Can we afford to do that is another point entirely, but that’s what we should do.
