… but who needs him when you have Mo Elneny back in the side banging in goals from 30 yards?

Two BIG pieces of news in football yesterday were:

Harry Maguire found guilty of assault and BRIBERY. I absolutely love all the ‘he’s a good honest boy’ pieces doing the rounds. I don’t even need to have been there to know how that scene played out.

‘Oi, speaken sie English mate? Look, let’s do a deal. Do you know who I am?’

You can imagine it… it was me when I was 19 years old, waving around 30 Euros because I’d heard the foreign police were open to it.

Shocking form from a man who really should have taken his mates to a private island. He earns £190k a week and he’s taking holidays like he’s earning £9 an hour in First Sport in Lakeside.

The second major piece of news is 33-year-old Lio Messi has told Ronald Koeman he wants out of Barca. I liked one of the Spanish papers takes on it.

‘The meeting wasn’t friendly and Koeman insisted he’d be inflexible

Can’t knock that sort of attitude.

I think it’s a great thing for Barca. Sell Messi for £150m to one of the petro-dollar clubs, get 60m off your wage bill, the rebuild with Matteo Guendouzi and Lacazette as your centrepieces.

Joking aside, who the fuck is going to pay a massive transfer fee and £70m a year? It feels like a weird threat to make of Barcelona, unless he can argue his contract is null and void because of covid… but even then, who is ponying up £70m a year? Crazy money. Let’s see if he’s truly going to stay, or he’s just kicking up a stink to show who is boss.

The third BIG piece of news is that THE Arsenal went all hype culture on us and dropped a fresh friendly with the MK DONS.

I was half in the game half out, but it was a fairly pre-seasonish performance. A lot of our big names were missing and we threw a lot of kids at the game. Odd that AMN started, not sure what that was all about. No Hector. We saw Willy Saliba in an Arsenal shirt and he looked comfortable on the ball and more than capable of dealing with the physical side of England. I think he’ll be a class act for us and suspect he’ll have a big role, though maybe not immediately.

Two early goals from Mo Elneney and Saka set nerves at ease. MK pulled one back from a stunning Rob Holding own goal. The second half saw some new faces and one of them scored. McGuiness with a bullet header into the top corner. Then Reiss finished the game off with a penalty at the end.

My guess is that Arteta is going to give the Community Shield secondary attention. The players just had an exhausting season and I would imagine Arteta understands that the most important thing he can deliver in September is a fast start. This team switches off if there’s nothing to play for, so keeping them in the mix is what he has to deliver.

Still, it must be hard. Players aren’t settled yet and there could be a lot of coming and going over the next few weeks. Far from ideal, I just hope the comings arrive earlier in the month. It’d be ideal to have our major problems solved for day one of the season… namely, a functioning midfield.

Short one today, have a good one!

Alex, You may think that the US is on the edge of something big, but As a Black French man in his 50’s living in UK, I am watching what is happening in the US with a sense of dread. Some in the new generation may be more socially aware than previous generations, but you have in equal measure the vapid, idiots watching Love Island who have no clue what is going in their country and the proud racists lunatics. Culturally the second amendment is alien to me, but I understand that it is important for some. However it takes… Read more »

“RVP was a walking highlight reel.Easily the most spectacular scorer of goals I’ve ever seen along with Henry in an Arsenal shirt.”

I always hoped he would have made a stop in America before the end. He was so charismatic, talented, well-spoken and good looking, he could have been a star here with the proper marketing.

‘He was so charismatic, talented, well-spoken and good looking, he could have been a star here with the proper marketing.’

You forgot to say ‘no homo’. 😀

Agree though, guy could have been an even bigger superstar were it not for the injuries.

Always remember hearing Henry and Bergkamp being stunned by what a 21 year old RVP was doing with the ball in training, Henry said he’d never seen technique like it. Pretty high praise considering he’d played with an abundance of world class talent including Zidane.

WengerEagle

I need to get back on the TV train, haven’t really watched a proper series since Better Call Saul and thought that tapered off after a brilliant 2-3 seasons.

Netflix docs lately have been my calling, The Last Dance was brilliant.

“You may think that the US is on the edge of something big, but As a Black French man in his 50’s living in UK, I am watching what is happening in the US with a sense of dread.” This is a perfectly legitimate reaction and concern from someone I recognize as a valuable member here. I can’t argue any of your points. The state I’m from actually allowed armed alt-right militias to occupy the governor’s mansion. You will enjoy Spartacus as much as Banshee, and there’s five seasons. I don’t count the third season of Banshee, because their budget was cut.

Warning: It’s about gladiators, so it goes without saying that there’s some cock shown, especially the first couple episodes. But the action and characters and writing are top notch, and tons of blood and sex. Like Deadwood meets 300 meets Rome (which I loved). So fucking good.

“Great posts Alex, NBA leading the way here!”

alex Never noticed that I’ll be honest. At least it was the same creator I suppose haha as opposed to Family Guy nicking The Simpsons ideas. CYE for me was amazing up until the later seasons, around season 7 with the Seinfeld crossover is where it tapered off I think. If Athletico are interested in Lacazette and don’t want to include partey in the deal, we should tell them to fuck off. That would mean the only way we would get him is by triggering his release clause and we don’t need their permission for that. Lacazette + 10 to 15 mil would be a fair swap. Otherwise wait to sell our players and trigger it and we won’t sell Lacazette to them anyway.

Just like allergic reactions, people have different sensitivity levels to electromagnetic fields. Some people can be affected by low levels.

Tony

Aussi
I can’t see how other than a very remote possibility a direct beam at the eye could affect a cornea, but I’ve found nothing to substantiate this mention.

This sums things up better:

Infrared thermometers don’t emit radiation into the brain; they sense heat emitted by the body. They pose no risk to the pineal gland, which is located deep within the brain, according to Dr. Haris Sair, director of neuroradiology at Johns Hopkins University.Jul 28, 2020

Maybe she’s just attention seeking or some other agenda that probably only makes sense to her lol

Tony

Syd could have a point regarding sensitivity levels.

Valentin

Aussie+Gooner,

Complete non-sense. Infrared thermometer do not generate radiations, they focus the radiation emitted BY the body and measure it.

The electromagnetic field generated is because it uses electricity and electronic, but it should be less than what you have in a mobile phone.

The only valid objection would be about the laser that is used as guide to see which object is being measured. If maintained for a long time it can be dangerous for the eye.

That was one of the things that I had to build decades ago as part of my engineering degree.

GoH In some respects I agree. I’ve been privileged to see all three, plus Cruyff. The fact that Messi has been playing on a carpet at the Nou Camp all this time doesn’t help his case. Same conundrum our Wenger faced.

Valentin

I really hoped that we were going to ditch the 3 at the back for a back 4 in order to density our central midfield. A 4-3-3, 4-3-2-1 or even a 4-2-3-1, but that 3-4-3 system just stop us from any attacking fluidity. It relies on pacy counter-attack by our wingers, but in possession we are toothless.

It is rendered worse by a combination of Xhaka and Elneny in central midfield. Those two against 3 Liverpool midfielders could mean another rearguard action on Saturday.

Graham62

Buzzy

Don’t worry too much.

It’s a chance to see some of the other players. Although some on here see it as a major prize, I look at it slightly differently.

Basically it’s a glorified friendly where all the proceeds are given to good causes.

If you win, that’s a bonus.

Some on here though still see it as a major trophy.

I wonder why.

Sad really.

Northbanker

If there were more supporters like you on here CG the club would be looking back over its shoulder and regressing- because at best you moan about how it was all perfect under Wenger (which it wasn’t – the last 10 years took us to the mess we’re now in) and at worst you don’t even support the club.

Samir

Valentin
Only trouble is if Luiz is starting he’s terrible in a back 4 and he’s our best CB.

Samir

Northbanker

I really don’t get what is going on with Atletico Madrid. They won’t budge on Partey and yet they apparently desperately want Lacazette and are offering us 3 players that we have (or should have) no interest in.

I still think the obvious deal is there for the grabs and it may depend partly on how Juventus move their interest on. If AM think he’s going there then….

Marko

Serious interest in Bellerin looks like we’ll be getting 40-50 million for both him and AMN which is brilliant honestly. Could replace them both for half and still have some towards a CM. My guess is that we’ll target Aarons because we’re losing a few homegrown players but I’d prefer other RB targets honestly

Graham – I agree with your comment on Bellerin to a point but losing both him and AMN in the same TW before a replacement is signed is a bit bonkers to me. We have no assurance we’re going to sign anyone. We’ve even let Osei-Tutu go on loan and he could have been cover. As it stands we only have Soares as the only recognised RB. Marko

We have no assurance we’re going to sign anyone.

You can pretty much bet your life on us bringing in a new RB if we’re letting two leave. Take it as a guarantee

Northbanker

I just think we still have so much to do getting our desired midfield targets we should have left the RB position alone. Now we’re spreading our negotiating team even thinner trying to sort this out when it seems clear it takes forever to negotiate and close a deal That may be a feature of how football is at present rather than a comment on the abilities of Edu and Huss Fahmy (who may be on his way out it seems) but it seems to be a fact of life however it arises.

Northbanker

Marko – I’m sure that will be the intention and I hope there is a deal that is already lukewarm and somehow kept out of the media. But otherwise you are simplifying a process to the extreme.

Terraloon

Signing 4 for Chelsea.

Malang Sarr on a free. That’s a good signing

Northbanker

The other possibility of course is that we pull out of whichever deal doesn’t happen first out of AMN and Bellerin

Marko

Northbank we’ve been through this for the past week since reports that AMN is leaving surfaced. People trying hard to justify keeping him arguing other areas being more important blah blah blah look it’s simple we have a meagre transfer budget we need to make sales in order to funds our targets and getting 20-25 million for AMN and 20-30 million for Bellerin is excellent business. Could easily get a new starting RB for 20-30 million who would be an upgrade on those two while still adding money to the war chest. Very smart from Arsenal

Uwot?

Nortbanker.Think Madrid are chancing their arm. They want Lacazette but also need dosh big time.so they’re trying to dump their cast offs on us instead of partey hoping we’ll bite 😂 & still get cash for Partey. No chance. As pointed out previously. The fact they’ve moved for Roca(a partey replacement )means they might have wised up & accept a part Laca swap unless they think they’ll flog Partey to Barca? Complicated hey?🤪

Uwot?

Marko-agreed.Smart moves by Arsenal so far.

Marko

Yeah the Partey transfer just looks like your run of the mill posturing by Atletico to get as much money as possible. Everything points to us still trying to sign him.

As for RB’s Atal and Emerson at Betis (signed a RB there from Brighton and we were linked to him prior to him joining Barca) are preferences but there’s honestly a lot around that could improve us. Celik, Mazaroui and Dest at Ajax, Dumfries, Montiel, Aarons is more of a prospect still. Some good options though

Captain Tierney

Marko

Dumfries is dumb with the ball. A big no.

Atal is a good attacker. Dont know about his Defensive skills.

Haven’t seen much of Dest , Mazorai , and Emerson to make judgements about them. Dest tho is attracting interest from big clubs.

Aarons would be a good signing imo. A mix of of good defense and offense.

Gonsterous

We need some midfield reinforcements. I thought that would have been the priority, instead of the willian and gabriel signing.

Can’t believe we have about 3 midfielders in the club.

Marko

Hey look don’t get me wrong between the quick turnover of the season and having to quarantine for 14 days I had hoped/thought we would have been quicker with some incomings but honestly it’s more important to get the signings right than quick for this particular club. Besides most clubs are in the same boat

Gonsterous

Just looked at son YT clips and I have tobeen say, diawara looks average. Yes, he’s got some talent and maybe potential but I would go for soumare, he looks so much more athletic and quicker than diawara. Both are CMs and will replace LT.

Karsa

A couple of thoughts.

We shouldn’t care about the result in the Community Shield. A norging game rendered even more so by the quick turnaround in seasons.

If we sell we can afford better midfield targets. It makes sense to do things this way round.

The transfer widow runs until 5th October. Yes, it would be nice to have all our signings done by the off, but this hasn’t happened previously and won’t this time round either.
