New signings show focus on youth, what’s slowing the seniors?

by .

It’s starting to feel like the good old days when Wenger was in charge. We need first-team signings badly, but the club is out here bringing in teenagers. Yesterday it was Tim Akinola, today it’s Jonathan Dinzeyi from SPURS. We’ve landed a centre half for the U23s. It seems the club is keen to add low risk / high reward players to the setup next season.

I am totally game for these sorts of signings. Just because a young player leaves a club, doesn’t mean they can’t make it elsewhere. Look no further than some of the young players we’ve exited. Gnabry, Jeff, Malen, and Bennacer tells you all you need to know about how footballers develop.

The DM reckons we’re going to land Gabriel. ESPN’s James Olley is saying we have landed him as well. There’s a lot of smoke around this player. We clearly have a good relationship after we broke our transfer record with them last year. I really don’t think there’s much of a choice between Arsenal and Napoli. Do you want to be barked at by Gattuso? Or work under the tutelage of Mikel with Edu there to shoot the shit over Brazilian politics? I know where I’d be going, sorry Genaro.

The interesting part of the story is that the Italian club is going all out to bring Sokratis the other way. The Greek centre back has fallen massively out of favour with Mikel, likely because of his passing and love for on-pitch wrestling. I can’t be arsed to look, but Sokratis and Gattuso might have played at Milan together way back when. If we can move him on, that’d be great news for Arsenal considering the weight of his contract.

There’s a tantalising story doing the rounds that Champions League minted Rennes are interested in bringing David Luiz over for a couple of seasons. He’d give them a lot of experience and the slower pace of Ligue 1 would probably work really well for the 33-year-olds fitness. I like David Luiz the leader behind the scenes, but it’s hard to look past some of the problems he had last season. If you could get FA Cup Luiz week in week out, I’d be fine, but I don’t think that exists anymore and it’ll only get worse as his pace dissipates. I also don’t think he’s a bench kind of player. If he’s not playing, he’s a nuisance. Could be best for all parties if there’s a huge role for him in France.

There are many other questions fans are asking:

What are we doing about Thomas Partey?

Is there any truth in Aouar?

When will Auba sign the contract?

Are we going to be able to sell effectively?

Will we play the swap game?

One thing to note, the transfer window is open for quite a bit this season. We have until October 5th. It’ll be interesting to see if clubs wait to see what is going on with covid precautions. More fans means more money and less reason to sell. I also think it’s clear that a lot of the cash merry go round will start when the big clubs enter the fray. It’s a little slow everywhere. Champions League and Europa League hasn’t finished yet. Patience shall be the virtue of this summer.

Long and short, don’t panic yet, there’s a bit of time to warm things up. The club wanted a flying start, I suspect that recent events have tapered our speed to market, but I’m still confident we can have a very good summer.

ESPN Brazil reckon both Manchester clubs and Bayern were in for Willian. The scales were tipped our way because of Edu and London. Nice. I really hope he has a good 3 years with us.

Right, see you in the comments!

Listen to the podcast IF you have time… but know this, if you don’t have time, can we even be friends?

I think that Arsenal’s priority is beefing up the Academy programme and sending out some the more promising players in U23 for first team experience
    with other lower league clubs.

It is very rare that English Players aged 19 + rejected by other clubs are going
to make the grade. Its sounds like filling holes in our U23 squad.

  2. Goobergooner

    I’m with WE,

Thierry Henry was and still is the man, I hang my Henry away kit from when I was a kid up every game hahaha.

  3. Goobergooner

I’ll tell you what though, if we don’t sign a specialist or 2 in midfield; considering our 2 men in charge were solid midfielders in their days, I will be shocked.

  4. HighburyLegend

“It’s starting to feel like the good old days when Wenger was in charge”

This is getting better by the minutes…

  5. Dissenter

That would be smart business to offer Sokrates to Napoli
    – that will kill their interest in Gabriel
    – recoup some of the money we spend on getting the Brazilian
-free up space on the roaster for the new comer

That’s a genius chess move, maybe Edu isn’ t that bad after all.

  6. HighburyLegend

“What are we doing about Thomas Partey?” : we’re still waiting for his price to drop, the usual Arsenal way.

“Is there any truth in Aouar?” ==> Seriously ?? lol

“When will Auba sign the contract?” ==> As soon as he will see a few zeros added to his pay rise.

“Are we going to be able to sell effectively?” ==> Ffs, do you want Mustafi to stay, or not ?? Make up your f*cking mind!!

  7. izzo

I agree with Stroller those signings are for the reserves replacing those sent out on loan. I believe Medley and few others have been sent out on loans to lower league clubs.

  8. shad

The Sokratis to Naples would be so good as Dissenter and Pedro have alluded to. Same as getting rid of Luiz. Hopefully we can find a decent fee for Rob Holding and Kolasinac. I’d be willing to cull off Bellerin if AMN would play RB but that’s another topic. The backline needs major surgery, same as the creative midfield role (Willian won’t give us 2 or 3 games a week).

  9. Champagne Charlie

“CC Brazilians don’t speak Brazilian they speak Portuguese lol“

Haha I know mate, was tongue in cheek at another poster who wasn’t as aware shall we say..

  10. Danny

Jonathan Dinzeyi not good enough for The Scum.
Tim Akinola not good enough for a Championship team.
    No problem, we’ll have ’em.

  11. NJ Gooner

Good post. But you haven’t yet addressed our two goalkeepers issue. Neither will be willing to sit on the bench. There is a problem brewing and a great swap to be made there.

  12. HighburyLegend

Impossible to get rid of Mustardi, imo.

There’s no club on earth that could wants him, even for free.

  13. TallestTiz

Cone end of window, our CB options will be:

    Chambers or Mustafi

    Sokratis will be surely off

Are Right Back, one of Bellerin or Niles will be sold

  14. Tom

Mustafi is plenty good enough for some second tier club somewhere, but why would he want to leave Arsenal now in his last year when he can get way more money going someplace a year from now on a free.
Especially when Arteta doesn’t mind playing him apparently.

The keeper situation is a different story though.
Even if the club bumped Emi Martinez pay ( I think he makes one fourth of Leno’s pay) he probably wouldn’t wanna stick around as a cup keeper now and who could blame him?

  15. Tom

If Everton are serious about moving up the table at all they should probably be looking at upgrading theirs.
    Pickford is so average.

  16. Terraloon

Mari. Bad injury. Won’t be back in full training till around the time the season starts. Going nowhere

Mustafi. Bad injury, last season on current contract. Won’t be playing till after the window closes. Just can’t see any sane club signing him.

Chambers. Bad Injury. Possibly like Mari will be back in training around the time the season starts. Possible loan again I can’t see any sane club spending on him till it’s known how he has recovered.

Sokratis. If the rumours are right about his wage being circa £100k that will be a hurdle. It was said that he wants to play as opposed to being on top dollar but an agent worth their salt would want £ from Arsenal if he were to say half his wage . That said the tax rates in Italy are far lower for footballers. So yep I think he may well go.

Holding. I just don’t see him as being fast enough for the PL. His wages are circa £25 k so I think he will he gone but his fee won’t be close to £20 million

Luiz. A very interesting one. As with Chelsea don’t let the fact a new contract was signed cloud the issue. If it were Benfica I would say definitely but I think at this point in time any fee for him balanced against his experience suggests to me he will stay.

Saliaba. Will he hit the ground running?

Gabriel. Will he arrive? Will he hit the ground running.

So I think come the 6th October . Mari, Mustafi, Luiz, Chambers, Sailaba and possibly Gabriel will be at Arsenal. With potentially 3 of them not fit enough to be considered in any starting 11.
Come 16 October I would not be at all surprised to see Chambers go out in loan to an EFL club

  17. Rich

Hopefully it won’t be one ought other…

But if the options were €30mill for Ceballos, or €50mill for Partey?
I’d take Ceballos, he’s been through his customary season adaption, and at 24 is nowhere near his peak, looks like a player very much on an upward trajectory.

Improvement doesn’t have to be external, having Tierney, Ceballos and Pepe more settled, as well as the younger players a year older, can give us a big lift.

  18. DivineSherlock

As Arsenal Fans Pedro I think we know we have to wait until the transfer deadline day , as usual . Dithering. #WengerOut

  19. Luteo Guenreira

Even if it takes the entire window, if the new team in charge can finally hack off the deadwood we’ve not been able to shed for years, make moves like dumping Sokratis and bring in 2-3 impact players in defense and midfield, all in one transfer window…..the stuff of legend that seemed impossible at Arsenal for over a decade….sign me the fuck up.

If only they could do something about Ozil. I guess on the bright side you can think that by this time next year we might be able to use that salary to bring in a player that actually deserves it.

  20. MidwestGun

Funny Peds because I kind of feel the opposite…. we are being linked to numerous good players.. and now you feel we might actually have a chance to land them. We already signed a first team starter. We are being linked to multiple teams for selling many of our deadwood. That’s not the usual at all.

When Wenger was here … there would be virtual radio silence for months.. nothing going on and then … wait for it Elneny…. yeah!!! oh wait.. who the fuck is Elneny?

I mean sure Wenger would sign the next Iranian Messi or the next Polish Oliver Kahn to fill up the academy but that’s the only similarity I can see. Wenger was all about waiting for the supposed deals late in the window like Ozil. Then he would be interviewed and be like well we can’t sign too many new players to break up our mental strength. And besides there is Euro, World Cup, Olympics.. (insert international tourney) here going on.

Anyhow my point is I think I much prefer the way things are going presently with regards to transfer windows and patience. Jury still out of course on results.

  21. China1

Talk of juve wanting both laca and Bellerin

If true and if they could pay 55-60m in cash that would be golden! Not gonna happen tho

  22. Chris

Unless an offer is ridiculously good, I would keep Bellerin, I still think there is a very good player there for us, i think it is a confidence thing with him getting over his bad injury. The way he burst forward for our winner in the cup final suggests he still has pace and thrust.

  23. CG

“””CG-Lacazette most likely. Or Ozil however you want to look at it.”””

    ???… laca is a striker, ???

I would imagine there is a severe case of buyers remorse with this Willian signing already.

Especially now as Don Raul has left.

  24. HighburyLegend

“no more marque signings we’re back to bargain basement signings”

Who gives a fuck ?? We got Ze Saucy One!!

  25. MidwestGun

Fluidity of formation, different formations in attacking and defending.. Auba will move centrally as striker or Willian can also sit in behind as a midfielder or also he can play either wing on days we want to sit Pepe or Saka or Martinelli or Nelson it gives us much more interchanging and fluidity options which could help our creativity as well as keep or defensive shape. The days of both teams lining up up 4-4-2 and saying go it it boys with fixed positions is long gone. But yeah you don’t believe in tactics so… think I might be wasting my breath

  26. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

How much you think Napoli will pay for papa ?
    4 m

I bet they want him on loan
    Don’t trust Italian clubs.

  27. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

Look the two yoots booted out have been given a second chance
If there is anything in there they have two yeArs to bring it to the table .

    It’s a free bet punt.

  28. Henry

Project youth part 34. No club builds up kids like Arsenal. Walcott Ox Ramsey Wilshere Gibbs Willock Nelson the list goes on

  29. MidwestGun

I can explain “pressing” to you if you want as well. 😀

By the way I do actually think “Our Wenger” as you say would make a good International coach.. Wouldn’t have to deal with recruiting and transfers and money contracts. And he could focus on one thing.. no worries about long seasons and injuries, plus International play tends to be slower and lends itself to possession based football more. Although, he has sat out long enough now.. that ship might have sailed as well. Anyhow I could see some nation taking a chance on it. Although I doubt he wants to coach anything but what he considers a top International side. Pride and all that.

  30. Dissenter

“DissHow much you think Napoli will pay for papa ?
    4 m”

    He’s 32 going on 33.
    He’s on 95k weekly
4 million will be exceptionally grand.

  31. MidwestGun

Sure if Roberto Martinez can coach Belgium don’t see why Wenger couldn’t do Netherlands besides being 70 yrs old, that is. Since most International teams are on a 2 to 4 year cycle of development. But short term, why not. Give us all something to talk about… hahaha

  32. Victorious

I see alot of people talking about this Gabriel chap and how he could fit in with no one particularly admitting to have extensively watch him play

I’d go easy with the over hyping, I mean he could come in and absolutely beast it or become an absolute clown, no one knows.

  33. CG

“”” By the way I do actually think “Our Wenger” as you say would make a good International coach”””

    I agree.
Buy The Netherlands to win their first World Cup in Qatar if he signs up.

Like Arteta , our Wenger has the Midas Touch.

  34. Champagne charlie

Big Weng should be England manager, just so the delinquent rival fans can swallow their bullshit as he actually gets the side playing decent football.

The banterful leverage we’d have over spuds would be comical if Kane had a blinder under him haha

  35. TR7

Wenger more suitable for national team management. No transfer window, less intensity and plenty of time to build something for long term. Netherlands will be a great choice.

  36. Victorious

Who would you have preferred for them? Wenger said NO and Xavi isn’t ready

I mean not like there are jobless decent managers currently hovering the football world.

Koeman has done a fantastic work at Netherlands and he’s as decent as they come ATM

  37. Luteo Guenreira

Think it’s been brought up numerous times over the years that Wenger may have been in over his head once professional football evolved past him, but he’d likely always have been an above average international manager. Would be great to see him in the Euros or something, hope it happens for him.

  38. MidwestGun

I’m pretty well neutral.. on who I want to get through… kind of hate the oil money thing.. but I like to see great players in the final. so really I don’t care about outcome.

  39. Radio Raheem

Yeah hard to look past Mbappe and Neymar. Although, I won’t be surprised should Leipzig went through – 50:50 match.

  40. Champagne Charlie

Bayern might’ve slapped Chelsea and Barca but PSG’s frontline is levels about both of them and they’re ripe for profiting off such a high line.

They’re the better side, but no cakewalk

  41. TR7

For about 15 mins, Bayern’s defense looked very unorganzied and porous against Barca. Neymar, Mbappe and Di Maria will create many problems for Bayern defense. .

  42. Habesha Gooner

Bayern vs PSG final. I suspect Bayern will win it. They have a lot of Players in Great form. Davies, Gnabry, Kimmich, Thiago, Muller and Lewandowski all have looked at their best. But you never know in a Final. Mbappe, Neymar and Dimaria can do special things.

  43. Victorious

PSG’s frontline is levels about both of them and they’re ripe for profiting off such a high line.”

So just their frontline then, of which they possess comparable quality, Bayern has the far better midfield and defense, they play like theyre possessed and has goals all over them

Anything other than a Bayern win in the final will be a shocker

  44. TR7

Barcelona president Bartomeu: “Messi, Ter Stegen, Lenglet, Semedo, De Jong, Griezmann and Démbélé are not up for sale.”

    Semedo untouchable but not Suarez

  45. Josip Skoblar

I would put my money on a PSG win. They’re very hungry for their first CL’s win. And they have the best player on the world.

  46. Dissenter

‘Barcelona president Bartomeu: “Messi, Ter Stegen, Lenglet, Semedo, De Jong, Griezmann and Démbélé are not up for sale.”Semedo untouchable but not Suarez”

He should know that not too many will line up to get Dembele off their hands right now.

  47. andy1886

Barca doing the usual ‘not for sale’ to keep prices up. If they get decent offers they could sell any of them (bar Messi who may force his way out anyway).

  48. Captain Tierney

Fabrizio ( one of the most reliable sources around) says Arsenal have agreed a deal with Lille for around 22mil. Napoli are still in for him. Upto the player now. I personally believe our pull is much stronger with the Brazilian players , Edu and ofc the sauce Arteta.

If we can snatch Willian ahead of Bayern , ManU and City, Napoli and Gattuso shouldn’t be a problem.

  49. Dissenter

“Barca doing the usual ‘not for sale’ to keep prices up. If they get decent offers they could sell any of them (bar Messi who may force his way out anyway).”

    Decent offers?
They overpaid massively for many of them.

  50. Champagne Charlie

“So just their frontline then, of which they possess comparable quality, Bayern has the far better midfield and defense, they play like theyre possessed and has goals all over them“

Who possesses comparable quality to Neymar, Mbappe, and Di Maria?

Barcelona had numerous good opportunities against Bayern that they couldn’t capitalise on because the have no athleticism in their team whatsoever, and could be suffocated by a high press.

That’s not going to be nearly as effective against the three mentioned.

  51. Radio Raheem

You’re right. Let’s cancel leaving the EU because Man City couldn’t bury one of their 20 chances

Yep that was exactly what I meant 😄

  52. MidwestGun

One of the few times your going to see a Brazilian hug an Argentine though. On that Di Maria goal celebration. Football solving world peace. 😀

  53. CG

Nagelsman, pressing, tactics none of it matters when Mpabbe is on his A game.

What a travesty, Stan never supported AW in getting him to Arsenal

Wenger would still be here and Arsenal would have won the Champions League by now.

    That’s KSE for you.

  54. Captain Tierney

Upa with his new contract is staying with Leipzig for at least another year anyways I think. If he goes now it will only be for a top top team.
I think he will be better off spending 1 more year at Leipzig but unfortunately it will then become very difficult for us to get him given the interest he is going to generate.
    Psg need Thiago Silva replacement
    Bayern need Boateng replacement
City need a new CB(tho their interest lies in Koulabaly for now
Chelsea have the money to go for him now
    Madrid need Ramos replacement.
Barca need a new back 4

  55. Captain Tierney

Sorry for being the one to break this to you but it was reportedly Wenger’s penny pinching attitude which allowed Mbappe to slip off our hands.

  56. CG

“””””Good to see Grandpa Weng again, he’s on Bein Sports”””””””

Doesnt he look a million dollars?
    Class personified.

He will be managing a club somewhere when he is 90.

  57. Victorious

Barcelona had numerous good opportunities against Bayern that they couldn’t capitalise on because the have no athleticism in their team whatsoever”

The Bayern team like to press the opposition from their defense to attack, this is bound to create space for the opposition due to the highline the defense will likely hold, theyre bound to concede few chances but the way they suffocate the opposition in itself will ensure they always have a greater chance of out scoring the opposition, they’re totally ruthless in the regard

PSG will likely have their moments because they have some brilliant individual players to cause problems but you’ve got to fancy the Bayern team who are the over all better side to clinch the win

  58. CG

“”””CG Sorry for being the one to break this to you but it was reportedly Wenger’s penny pinching attitude which allowed Mbappe to slip off our hands.”””””

His job is to find the talent, get the players wanting to join the club etc , its Stans job to get it over the line.

    (Likewise Suarez farce.)

    Book launch ….
    October 22.
    (Our Wengers Birthday.)

  59. Champagne charlie

I never disputed that, I expect a Bayern win but they’ll be tested 10x better than what Barcelona could muster. They’re a washed up era that was truly exposed/embarrassed, PSG have very good athleticism and the best attackers in the competition for me by a distance. Hopefully makes for an entertaining cup final.

  60. karim

Just hope Lyon doesn’t get annihilated come tomorrow night, they had a great run overall this year. Wouldn’t do them justice.

  61. MidwestGun

Well I could use a consolation goal.. and then I land my 3-1 at 8/1 payoff. Then it’s drinks all around.. haha Minus taxes of course.

  62. Victorious

They were always going to be destroyed by PSG,

Athletico Madrid would have provided a sterner test, might have shithoused their way to a win or bore the fvk out of them for a draw

  63. Champagne Charlie

Di Maria has pulled the strings here, Neymar and Mbappe provide unreal moments but he’s the glue.

  64. Victorious

The naivety of the Liepzig team utterly exposed by PSG

Exactly the same reason you have to fear for Lyon, could be a long night for them if Bayern decide to turn the screw

  65. MidwestGun

Yep …it’s that last .. 999.9 million I’m short. Anymore these days 100 bucks is a large bet for me. But I will put down a twenty here and there to keep it interesting. Juice as they say.

  66. Radio Raheem

Fair enough haha. Was referring to the TV series Billions but hard to leave this watching Di Maria reprise his playing making skills I last saw at Real.

That said you’re a bit closer to that billion than I am and with your strike rate betting you’ll be there in no time.

  67. MidwestGun

Neymar has perfected the art of getting fouled. Always looks like a car crash. and then you see the replay.
