Thomas Partey benched you say? + Willian numbers eye-watering

by .

Mesut Ozil dropped the big interview in The Athletic. TL;DR, he wants to stay.

This isn’t new news. He loves it in London, he’s paid a fortune, no one is going to make him take a substandard playing option.

I think we should just leave it there. If we’re asking Madrid to pick up £30k of Ceballos’ wages, chances are, we’re not finding £18m to buy him out.

Question is, what does Mikel do about it?

We can’t have another season of the first question in every press conference being ‘what about Mesut?’

It’s not good for the squad, it’s not good for the project, it’s not good for Arsenal… but here we are.

The second bit of meaty news waaaaas… Kia. He spoke to TalkSport again to give us a boardroom update.

  1. He doesn’t influence Arsenal
  2. He thinks Sven is shit
  3. He hasn’t offered us a bunch of players despite journos saying he has

I can’t say it enough, it is outrageous that an agent speaks so freely about Arsenal, going to the depth of critiquing how we recruit really is drunk dad stuff. Those are the words of someone far too comfortable with his Arsenal connection. It really is unreal.

It also just shows you that words like ‘LIVERPOOL DATA STYLE’ are basically nonsense until we stop seeing his name attached to every link in the media.

More worrying, the Daily Mail is reporting that all in, Willian is going to set Arsenal back £220k a week. That feels quite a long way from ‘bargain’ and it’s exactly the sort of thing the exec team at Arsenal can’t stop doing. We’re skint and throwing that sort of mega-money at a player that will go to Qatar after Arsenal on a free.

… no wonder Kia is so confident in the media. He still calls the shots at Arsenal. It is embarrassing.

Finally, Thomas Partey benched for the Leipzig game… we wouldn’t? Surely?

Right, that’s me done, see you in the comments. x

Cech signing made sense, Youssi B saved our season, the rest, yeah, disastrous.

On the other end it is all downhill for us except for Cesc who help get Jose fired.

Personally I thought that the bulk of incoming transfer business last summer
was okay. The only concern was perhaps Luiz.

I was not critical of transfer fee for Pepe, but merely reporting that it was now
being reviewed.

Willian has come in on a Bosman so his package may include a signing on fee,
which is incorporated in his wages.

Ozil is lazy so we should sign 32 year old Willian for 3 years?

Ok.

“I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us,” Arteta told Arsenal Digital. “We have been monitoring him for the past few months, we had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions [and] he is a player that gives us a lot of versatility, he can play in three or four different positions.” This bit suggests we’re on the market still for an attacking midfielder or winger depending how Willian is viewed. Have a feeling it’s Coutinho and the likes of Aouar are going to be too difficult to pull… Read more »

ES – The signing on fee due to him being a free agent must be high but the weekly wages I would be very surprised if they were over the £100-120K per week. Which is realistic for a player with his status in the game. My only issue/questions with the deal are his contribution to the team. Will he be a positive influence on the youngsters in terms of professionalism and technical ability or will he take vital minutes away from them thus hindering development as well as produce nothing for the first team due to being a shadow of… Read more »

I think Willian might be a success. He is 32 year but is hardly injured, hardworking and has pedigree. Current form is great as well.

What I can’t stand are these hit-pieces from Kia and clearly Arsenal journo briefings to discredit an ex-colleagues.

You can buy success but you own the class. It is a question of whether you have it or you don’t.

Champagne Charlie

Edu says Willian is the first signing of a big summer for Arsenal.

“It will take time but with Willian, we’ve started a big process. We’ve identified the needs in the squad and he’s the one to start to rebalance the squad as we want to.”

So exactly what people have been hoping for then….Edu out.

I can’t believe the club is paying 850k/w to a 32 year old!! Worst signing ever.

Willian played in 36/38 games for Chelsea last season. The only game he missed through injury was the first of season. He was not picked for last game presumably because Chelsea knew then that he was leaving the club.

Despite CG’s ridiculous assertions Chelsea wanted to keep the player but were only willing to offer him a 2 year contract. The player’s performance and money were not the issue.

Stroller: “as I also pointed out the average age of our squad was the second youngest in league.”

To repeat my previous post in which I repudiated this claim (obviously you didn’t read it…) our squad is in fact the SEVENTH youngest in the league. See link below from Planet Football back in June:

https://www.planetfootball.com/quick-reads/ranking-all-20-premier-league-clubs-by-the-average-age-of-their-squad/

Now I’m not saying that we can’t afford one additional experienced head but there’s no need to make statements that are incorrect to support that.

“Arsenal expect to confirm another big-money contract soon, with the captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang likely to sign a new deal in time for next season. They will also be active in what promises to be a frantic transfer market until the window closes in October. A defender, a central midfielder and another forward are all in Arteta’s sights and, with a bulging wage bill, departures of several peripheral players are inevitable to fund help such moves.“ – Guardian

Gabriel, Partey……Zaha?

Jamie

Last week my sources told me the contract we offered 68 year old Willian was a lower financial package than he was offered at Chelsea, Miami and Barca.

“We’re not paying him a premium, though we are giving him what in all likelihood will be a dead year for choosing us over a more lucrative deal in Miami or Barcelona.”

Those clubs offered him £3.6m a week, but only over 2 years. He told Kia it was 3 years at Arsenal on less money being offered by Chelsea/Barca/Miami or no deal.

This William deal will be the exact replica when Manchester United purchased Sanchez. Sanchez used to Arsenal’s way of playing struggled badly at Old Trafford and William used to Chelsea’s way and smaller pitch will do likewise. Anyone with a soccer brain ( so not too many on here) knows that recruiting Willian will be an unmitigated and horrendously expensive disaster. Most of these news are clickbait luring traffic to earn pennies. Even Willian would be surprised if he is getting £220pw with a 3+1ywar contract when he turned 32.

This doesn’t mean it’s a good business. I remember one Wenger interview where he said a young 22y old will cost you points but he is always better than an aging 32y contributing 5extra goals a season.

You need experience to let the kids develop? Buy a 27y old ffs.

Marc

CC

When we’re being linked to a forward it could mean a CAM or second striker with Laca leaving.

Paulinho

Charlie – I’m assuming the midfielder is Partey or someone of that mould. When they say forward I’m hoping it’s actually another Willian type, that floats behind the forwards, so Coutinho, or (in our dreams) Grealish arriving to be chief-lockpicker.

I’ve criticised Lacazette but if he has movement around him to distract defenders he becomes a different player, due to having more time, and if he stays we certainly don’t need another out-and-out forward (especially with Nketiah as well).

Greasing the wheels in midfield has to be priority, then take stock again next summer.

Arsenal need to find some money to pay the release clause for Dayot Upamecano, that’s the type of business Arsenal should be doing. William, Soares, Mari and Luiz is just a re-play of the banter era under AW. Long term it would serve Arsenal FC better to add quality over quantity. If we can only afford to add one quality player do that, than stocking the team with Mustafi 2.0, Debuchy 2.0 and a player with a slightly higher ceiling than Yossi Benayoun. Hopefully if next season is disastrous Raul and Edu will be gone.

Marc

Steve

Realistic fans know it’s not going to happen overnight, all they want to see is signs that we’re moving in the right direction. There will be mistakes along the way but if the “management team” can pull off the signings we’ve been linked to or similar then I for one will be happy.

Agree re:Ceballos, needs sorting out one way or another. Do wonder the alternative if he’s to stay at Madrid, maybe then a player like Soler would be considered.

Our business will be influenced by the deals we agree for Torreira and Guendouzi for me, I think if we negotiate sales then we can afford to be more aggressive in midfield. We agree loans then it’s a bit dicey, and swaps maybe offers less scope for getting the exact names we want eg Diawara and such.

Still feel Gabriel, Partey, and Coutinho are the most likely.

GunnerDNA

Marc,

“Well we’ve been linked to Gabriel if that comes off with Saliba having joined us what more do you want”

I’m talking about facts, players linked and transfer rumors are for kids on Arsenal twitter. I want to see the Club make sensible decisions. Mari, Luiz, Soares and Willing are not the right decisions. We’re adding squad players to the 17 plus that is already at the Football Club.

Willian will not be playing on wings so Pepe is safe..one of the first things Arteta said in today’s interview was that he likes Willians abulity to make driving runs in the center and that an attacking midfielder was on his mind…that’s enough to conclude Willian will be at CAM

We are the guy in the auction that goes from a grand bid to a million.

Some cunts are making a nice killing there.

Freddie Ljungberg

Did we overpay for Pepe, probably a bit, but he was still cheaper than Zaha, who he is better and younger than and they wanted the full 80m upfront if reports are to believed. Stands to reason that it’s going to cost us more than normal when we do a back loaded deal like that.

Still waiting for the evidence that we paid 20m+ in agent fees for Pepe like Val claimed, that would be worth investigating if it was in any way believable.
