Inexcusable performance from a club heading to rock bottom fast

by .

A second dreadful day in the office for Mikel Arteta where questions will rightly be asked of his in-game management. After taking the lead against Brighton, his players managed to flunk out again and lose to 2-1 to a side that hasn’t been able to score all season.

A lot of fans are rightly looking at the subs he made late on that looked confused and woefully naive.

The themes of Arteta with this squad so far have been: 1) Fairly solid 2) Bereft of creativity 3) Poor in-game management

We saw all three of those on display today. Arsenal controlled the game against a side that is pretty good in possession, we create limited chances we should have done better with, we took the lead with a piece of exceptional skill… then we let the game go to shit.

Everyone switched off to a pre-planned corner straight out of the fantasy training ground. Then, the man that wiped out Leno early on the game scored late on when we drifted off in the 95th minute. Abysmal, distressing, very, very sad.

Was the reffing absolutely shit? Yes. But it’s not an excuse. You have price that in. This is the Premier League.

Were Brighton overly physical? Yes. But come on, this IS the Premier League. We cannot continue to moan about this and play the victims all the time, we’ve been doing it for 15 years. The character of the players was perfectly summed up when Maupay caused a horrendous injury to Leno and the only person to give him shit was… Leno, who took a moment out from excruciating pain to give him shit. Where was Auba? Where were the 8 players around the ref demanding justice? It was pathetic to watch. No fire whatsoever.

Our midfield continues to be a problem. No control, power, pace or vision. Dani Ceballos was terrible, constantly slowing the pace of the game. Matteo doesn’t know what he wants to be in life, he’s a clogged, he offered very little. When the engine of your team is that bad, you have no chance.

The season is finished, but I kind of hoped this squad would be able to give a little more than this.

There is a lot going on behind the scenes. We have players contracts that are expiring, 4 of them, and that is a problem. We cut players pay by 10%, that could be a factor. We have players who have no security around their future. Then we have Mesut Ozil, our best player, as a grey cloud again.

Outside that, nothing seems to work on the pitch. We have no balance, we lack power, the intensity of pre-covid has disappeared, there’s no creativity… and look, it’s the same with Ozil in the side, his contributions to the team recently have been as midtable as our general output.

Also, we lack leadership. It’s so apparent. No one stood up today, bar Saka. It’s a team of soft boys outside that.

So where do you go from here?

The kids aren’t good enough to go it alone.

The senior players aren’t up to it and lack character.

The blended mix of the two hasn’t worked for three managers in a row now.

It is not a good time to be heading into the transfer window with very little money to make a difference.

The rock bottom I spoke about the other day might come faster than we thought.

Here’s to another shitty weekend courtesy of Arsenal.

Have a good one, go get drunk, let’s talk next season xxx

@China, I agree. I think the fuss over formations is a huge distraction. It’s spirit, drive, teamwork etc that win you games. And we have none of it. It’s early days but I also worry that whatever Tets is practicing in Colney is simply not working. We can have the best formation in the Premiership but we will still fuck up since we’ve conceded more goals from set pieces (or was it corners?) than any other this season. Arsenal over the last 15 years or so has been typified by poor discipline, lack of strength, weak team spirit, soft management.… Read more »

For all the arguments and counters on here I only have one thing to offer: If we have no player poverty to affect Arteta’s saucy management, where everyone recognises Arteta as a rookie, then why is the rookie Lampard’s Chelsea sitting in 4th place and we are in 10th and visibly regressing as the last 2 games show? Can’t be RA’s money as we have a squad capable of just missing 3rd & 4th last season and then added Pepe, Tierney et al. Surely a head coach of Arteta’s vastly gained experience from Pep should rise above the glaring shortfalls… Read more »

I still don’t understand why refs don’t protect the keepers more? How many times have we seen it in the past where a forward goes for a ball too far away only for him to injure the keeper.

Also auba has to be up there as the worst captain we have ever had. Why can’t we get someone who stands up for the team whilst also holding them accountable when they don’t turn up?

Gonsterous

Don’t understand the people having a go at guendouzi, he’s not the best player but he is very young and inexperienced. He is a squad player that can improve.
Dani and xhaka are the useless ones, over 25 years old and still play like they are in the U18s team.

Also I hope this puts to bed the arteta and his sauce bs.

China1

Guns laca’s link up with auba on the edge of the box was decent yesterday but he rarely got involved nearer the midfield so we always looked out numbered But this is a problem very specific to arsenal this last 18 months where there is always a huge gap between midfield an attack that makes looking dangerous always such a challenge Considering how much we struggle with offensive transitions and to controlling the midfield I would play a 4-4-2 with auba and martinelli *both* as false nights dropping very deep regularly By doing that we could frequently flood the AM… Read more »

Gonsterous I actually think usually keepers get way too much protection. Yesterday Leno wasn’t, but as a rule of thumb in most games keepers randomly get given free kicks for really innocuous stuff like a striker just jumping for a ball near them

DivineSherlock

I really have sympathy for Arteta . He already inherited a poor squad and now its ravaged by injuries. 1st choice keeper gone , 1st and 2nd choice defender Mari and Luiz gone , 1st and 2nd choice midfield unavailble Xhaka and Torreria . Expecting Guendouzi to play like a midfield lynchpin ia too much . Ceballos actually plays with heart but lacks a reliable partner in midfield , often he has to pass back to his defenders. But I still want to know why the fuck Arteta is not playing Martinelli . That is one of the most baffling… Read more »

Gonsterous our previous captain told the fans to fuck off! We seem to have a recent history of problems with the captaincy which started ever since wenger devalued it and started giving it to whoever he wanted to stay. Then we had gallas… Arteta was an entirely forgettable player and captain (though not bad), we’ve had Kos who was a good player but not a leader and cried because his kids asked why we are shit lol, per was quiet and not an elite player, then we had the calamity that was the emery 5 captains including xhaka and ozil… Read more »

This day was plain and full of stain
We thought Arteta would make us better

Lets wait till summer, dont bring no drama, just blame the scammer
He is so lego, was told by pedro

China1

I’d really feel a lot better if auba leaves we literally just had no captain u til someone earns it

The captain needs to be a nailed on starter who makes the team better, fights for the team, lifts morale, keeps people focused and honest etc

Who can do that job? No evidence anyone can so far so just bin it and let them all fight for it. Pick a captain next Jan 1st or postpone if there’s still no obvious candidate

Gonsterous

China

You forgot the main role of the captain in our club. Needs to attend the coin toss, they are great at that.
Apart from the coin toss, they have literally no other role as captain.

andy1886

Epic comment over on F365 following a piece on Mesut Ozil’s situation and how the club want to get rid this summer but he’s determined to see out his contract.

This reply from Mkwazi Uzulki (I’m guessing that English may not be his first language but he nails it nonetheless):

andy1886

Oh, and Olympiakos of course.

Moray

“Village invite cockroach to feed on corpse cockroach stay till is corpse is gone. Not fault of cockroach.” Haha. True. Our mismanagement at all levels of the club is pretty much unrivalled, at least in the Premiership. We didn’t learn from Edu leaving on a free and have been through that cycle time and time again. We have to change an ingrained culture at the club. A culture of no accountability, weak mentality, sulking and laziness AT ALL LEVELS. But Arteta had Pep to learn from and become the 2nd coming of the saucy one.

Yet still doesn’t have a clue about in game management.

What people can understand is Arteta’s limitations as a head coach that comes from lack of experience. Arteta can’t learn on the job with The Arsenal; however, Arteta doesn’t seem to be able to do that either.

Very Wenger in that respect where he just keeps making the same mistakes.

Guns of Hackney

Let’s just get the season done and see what happens over the summer.

Arteta needs a full season and his own players, system and style. If it doesn’t work or shows no signs of improvement, he moves on.

Moray

I see Lampard’s thanking his owner Openly for backing the club’s financial dealings this “summer” (which on paper look excellent). This is an owner who was refused entry to the UK and had to become an Israeli – and he’s still backing the club.

We won’t get any backing and will fall further behind. I think we can probably accept now that we are at beat in the second tier of English Football. No way we can back into the TOP five for a few years.

Andy1886

Fair enough in theory Guns but Arteta is going to pretty much work with what he’s got. We’re not doing much in the TW this summer.

Moray

Tony; in Arteta’s favour, this season is gone. It doesn’t much matter now what he does. Likely as not a second and maybe further phases of the virus will fuck up next season too. If he tries to integrate the kids into the team ahead of next year, particularly considering our zero Budget for transfers in, it makes a lot of sense. Win or lose now means little. It’s about a Long term plan of building for the future, in a world where we have little In the way of competitive advantages Against our competitors. Ironically, it’s quite like Brexit… Read more »

Tony

Moray
Appreciate what you’ve posted but it concerns me that inexperience is not what our club needs, especially in rebuilding.

I was hopeful at Arteta’s appointment even though my gut said it wouldn’t work.

There is a world of difference between an assistant coach to being head coach, which history has proved time and again.

Arteta is just adding his name to the list of fallen assistant coaches who never made the grade.

Pedro,

Arteta is pandering to cliques within the team. That’s all it is.

“let’s judge Arteta next season”

That argument relies on the fact that he needs time. Fair enough, but what about the fact that he’s incapable of playing the right players, the team selection and subs. That kind of thing has nothing to do with time. It’s just a stubborn personality trait and I’m afraid that isn’t going to change no matter how much time he gets. That’s the main reason why this whole thing feels like a never ending shit storm. Arsenal made the wrong choice in hiring Arteta. Simple as that.

Redtruth

No way Emery has us on 40 points, I would say closer to 52 points had he remained in charge.

China1

I don’t agree that in game management is something you learn on the job Unless you’re trying to do some next level left field tactics, things like subs are largely quite a simple and mundane part of the game When chasing result and not playing well, make positive subs. Bring off players unlikely to make the difference and bring on those who can. Give the players enough time to impact the game etc Whilst the choice of players or an adjustment in formation requires some nuance, this is largely speaking quite a routine thing that not just manager but most… Read more »

Guns, I agree there. It the question is what do we need to do to sort out this shit show? I doubt we can afford any ins, other than Saliba. We will barely be able to offload any of our 10CBs, Ozil, Xhaka etc. Our board are useless and the management continue to make stupid and irrational decisions which cost us money. Is it fair to say that arteta had new coach bonce? And now it’s gone, the players have reverted to type?
Though that doesn’t excuse dropping certain players or playing players out of position.

Also getting Mari seems like a waste of money. Why would a south American player cost 14m? He should not be costing more than 8m.

I think he said he wanted to bring the subs on a bit earlier but there was a miscommunication or something with the officials.

That doesn’t look too good either.

Pedro

I’m sorry but Martinelli not playing is beyond stupidity and unless he has failed a drugs test, has been diagnosed with covid 19, or slept with Arteta’s wife, he should be playing.

The biggest mistake Arsenal made back in December was not getting in Ancelotti when they had the chance.

Yesterday was an unmitigated disaster against a team and club I respect and admire( my community team) and who I want to stay up. We should have been two goals up before Pepe scored.

What happened after that was a predictable embarrassment, both for the team and Arteta.

Pierre

My take on the game is that we were a little unlucky. On another day Aubameyang could have had a hat trick. Lacazette had a couple of chances and Saka hit the bar.. Brighton created next to nothing and Mustafi and Holding look a solid pairing. Aubameyang always looked dangerous coming on from the left that is why it Is his best position. Agreed, we should have won………but we didn’t.

Reflecting after yesterday’s rants….whichever way you look at it, it was shite. Saints away next with a buzzing ings and martinez in goal, that’s an L I’m afraid. Then it’s the 4 tough ones, Leno will be badly missed for those. All in all not much to get excited about.

Redtruth

Emery got sacked for far less than these set of results.
Let’s not forget Man City had lost more games than Arsenal before they played us.

Gonsterous

We conceded both goals because of bellerin, simple as.
For the corner, he went to defend the back post, when he’s a RB.
And he was absent a lot of times at rb( maybe arteta asked him to play more forward) when the opposition were attacking and guess what they scored coming in from the right side again.

We really are big trouble if he continues to play week in, week out.

I think we can forget about the xG and xGA trends crap until we need to analyse why we’re only just scraping a run wins. Let’s get a bunch of ‘undeserved’ wins first please and worry about trends later.

I also think Pedro underestimated just how mentally weak some of our players really are. Arteta isn’t a wizard.

5 years under Arsene Wenger still scares me.

We are tenth in the table. We won’t hold that position but fall lower to somewhere between the relegation places and mid table this season. This will happen because: (1) there’s nothing the team can set their sights on as a suitable target (Europa League isn’t a suitable target for Auba and a few others); (2) we can’t make the best of what we’ve got in midfield. It’s not great, but it probably includes Torreira (injured), Xhaka (injured) and maybe Ozil (away with the fairies). That gives you an energetic defensive midfielder who if instructed to protect the back line… Read more »

@Graham62 “I have a very simple take on all of this… Arteta, just like his predecessors, is trying to be too clever.” This and other things also. Isn’t it strange, that some of the same idiotic things in team selections, formations and subs, Wenger used to make towards the end of his tenure, Emery made… And now Arteta is making them? Most of these examples used to be called out on this blog with an explicit degree of accuracy and were met with copious amounts of disbelief, annoyance and distain, are now being overlooked? What does that suggest?? What does… Read more »

China1June 21, 2020 01:30:37 Wasn’t there a stat that the last time dunk scored (maybe at home) it was against arsenal all the way back in 2018?Serious question, why do we always seem to be the one to break these kinda records?Every time there’s a shit record we let teams beat them.Haven’t won in 10 games? Come play arsenal! Haven’t scored in 20 years? Come play arsenal! Not sure of the rules of the game? Come play arsenal! Had 6 pints and a packet of pork scratching a before the game? Come play arsenal! Hunchback cunt? Come play arsenal! We are… Read more »

I don’t know if the comment about Covid was meant as a joke, but there could actually be something in it. People who have had Covid struggle for some time..

BUT, I am worried that a rookie manager who is desperate to emulate his hero, Guardiola, but doesn’t really seem to have a clue about team selections is a dangerous situation for Arsenal.

He is perhaps weak. We know he has helped with coaching, vis Sterling, but does he actually have any tactical skills?

Answers on a postage stamp!

It is certainly depressing to be very concerned about an upcoming game against Southampton, a place where we have suffered some embarrassing defeats in recent years anyway. Indeed Shane Long has put a couple past us also, he is the type of busy striker who gives our static defence problems.

As others have said previously, let’s hope to see us move the ball quicker and more positively. This was something happening in Arteta’s first few games but seems to have reduced since we returned from the lockdown.

Mr J – “What does that suggest?? What does this all mean??” To me, it suggests that Arteta doesn’t know who his strongest 11 are. Injuries haven’t helped. We’ve conceded 8 goals in the last 3 games we’ve played (ok, 1 was a friendly). I never cared much for xG because we had a solid finisher in Auba. Our xGA has always been poverty, and therein lies the issue. Soft underbelly for 15 years and counting. Something about the culture at the club is rotten. Arteta won’t correct that overnight. Better to write-off this season to avoid further disappointment. Give… Read more »
