European setback

by .

Here you are, like pigs at the content trough, waiting for a delicious serving of Arsenal news.

Well, it’ll be slim pickings today because I am writing this at night because we made a podcast. This is the main course, the podcast will be the dessert… and the fact that you are willing to eat dessert at breakfast says a lot about your state of mind right now

My state of mind is shabby. I am BORED of not spending time with other people. I am DISGUSTED that I am not watching sport. I was THRILLED that football was coming back in Europe… but those hopes are getting dashed up by those meddling EU leaders.

The first to kick the legs away from the football fans was Emmanuel Macron. The handsome man who was dabbling with cougars well before the term was popularised dropped his elite pedigree points by a margin when he announced that there would be no football until at least September. That means the league is basically over. TV firms don’t want to wait around apparently, so the game is up in France. PSG talking about playing Champions League games in another country (I bet they are).

WILLIAM SALIBA COULD PLAY THIS SEASON IF THE PREM ROLLS INTO JULY.

Back to Euro football:

The French news had me tearing up in my bowl of breakfast dessert… then Germany made matters worse, with rumours swirling that an uptick in covid-19 cases, coupled with the scientific community calling the return dumb, would lead to a further delay on the return. Late May now looking more likely.

The Premier League is slightly different. The Government want the distraction, the Premier League desperately wants to fulfil its contractual obligations, and the fans are probably at the point where they don’t care much for the health implications. Not that I am saying that’s right, but look, Richard Masters just invited a new owner to the table who chopped up a critic with a bone saw… the Premier League is taking the high ground on nothing. It’s all about the pound notes my friends.

An Italian journo has fired back on the Thomas Partey denials saying that he’s up for a move and Atleti are desperate to sell players.

I really can’t be dealing with this back and forth, but the reality is we have no money. If Auba signs, that’s our meal ticket back into the market gone. Our only other big-ticket hope is Matteo, you’d have to hope that people don’t know about the bullshit behind the scenes, or that PSG are into that premium French youth vibe. You could pray that Simeone hasn’t seen Lacazette’s fitness or physicality levels.  Outside that, it’s slim pickings.

We spent this summers money last summer. Our wage bill is about £50m too high. We don’t have many players that’d sell in this climate. The bottom has fallen out of the market. Our players aren’t going to tolerate deferred wages or cuts if we’re splurging on recruits. It’s going to be a difficult summer that is unlikely to yield 26-year-olds in their prime.

I did hear that Mikel very much likes Pablo Mari. I was also told that though the Cedric Soares transfer looked very dodgy, he was actually flagged by our scouts as someone that fit the profile Mikel was looking for.

THE PROFILE: Is he on Kia’s books

Just jokes. He’s apparently the type of player we wanted. Make of that what you will. Doesn’t bode well for Hector, right?

Ok, wipe your eyes, put your headphones in and absorb my voice in your ears for the next 55 minutes. Pretend it’s an important Zoom call if your boss wants to meet.

It’s a bit of a conundrum for Arteta. He has Aubameyang, Lacazette, Ozil and Pepe who are all quality players in their own right. However I don’t think they suit the style of football that Arteta wants to play. Arteta wants to play a high energy game, with players who are intelligent in their pressing and are positionally aware, especially from his offensive and midfield players…..his experienced players do not give him the energy and pressing for his philosophy to succeed. However, if he plays an offensive line up with a choice of 4 out of Martinelli, Nketiah, Saka, Smith… Read more »

A tall and powerful full back.

I’m all for going with the young guns but no manager, novice or experienced, is going to use all youngsters week in, week out. It’s a recipe for disaster. We have to keep some experience in the squad.

Sell Auba.
Sell Lacazette.
Sell Guedenzi.

£120m. Easy.

Buy Party and see if the Upamenxho deal is actually going ahead to Bayern.

Thomas Partey appears to be the flavour of the week on Le Grove.

He is an upgrade on our midfield , that’s for sure.
I like the fact that he appears to glide over the ground when running with the ball.

Xhaka, Torreira, ceballos and Guendouzi never look comfortable travelling with the ball , I would call them plodders.

The obvious outcome would be a player
swap , Lacazette/Partey which would suit both teams as Atletico have previously shown interest in Lacazette.

Also, I would be surprised if Torreira is still around come next season

Uwot?

Arsenal are going to have to get very creative it seems.A lot of the so-called big clubs all need financing. But then so do we.Swap deals & cash looks likes it’s the way to go.Two players is my belief is what we desperately need.one as pointed out by others & Pierre is PARTEY.whatever it takes.would be a game changer for us.& another centre half.not necessarily a left footer.DISASI is the other.
Next offload whoever we can & cut the wage bill drastically.might only get shekels for them but every little helps as they say…..

During this COVIS-19 crisis, KSE didn’t show any love for the Arsenal football club. All they care is asking the club to find ways to balance the book.

Dissenter

Torriera was always just good enough. He had a fantastic take-off at Arsenal but soon petered out because he’s not suited to the game in England.
People yap about Xhaka so much, often for good reasons but they forgot about the average Uruguayan that we all bigged up because he was the first decent DMF we had in 12 years.

Pierre

Bojangles “We have to keep some experience in the squad” Experience in the defensive areas. For a manager to play the style of football he adheres to, he needs the right type of player or it will fail , similar to the failure of Emery. We brought in players like Pepe , Luiz, Ceballos in the summer who didn’t fit Emery’s philosophy , coupled that with already having Aubameyang and Ozil in the squad , it was doomed to fail. Arteta’s philosophy of pressing and energy is not so different to Emery’s but that’s where the similarities end. Arteta is… Read more »

Maybe Bellerin’s been highlighted as a player with some value and worth moving on especially after an ACL that look’s to have affected his pace.

Problem is how sales will appear on the accounts – a player valued at £30 million suddenly sold at £15 because the market has reset still causes potential issues with FFP.

Marc

Pierre

Of course it’s going to take time to get the squad in the mould that Arteta wants and the current situation isn’t going to help but who is expecting an instant fix?

As long as I can see us moving in the right direction with continual improvement I’m happy – most balanced fans thought it was going to take several years to get things back to how they should be after Wenger left – nothing has happened to change that.

What are you on about?
KSE isn’t swooping in to rescue the Denver nuggets and LA Rams. The NBA Will be cancelling the season outright so imagine the losses the Nuggets will have.
What is with people and the need for sugar daddies swooping in like knights in shinning armor?
Whatever happened to asking the yank to get his hands off our club.
What does ‘finding love’ even mean?

Dissenter, agree re Torreira.Marc.agree.Problem is going to be on valuations going forward with regards to deals. How many clubs will be accepting the so called “ New Norm” of half price valuations & not wanting to get caught with their pants down.Very tricky. As a result I fear for Arsenal in any transfer negotiations.Dont exactly have a great track record.

Mate it’s like there’s a huge click of fans who have the mentality of 5 year olds. Is Kroenke a great owner – no, has he let the club spend what it earns – yes, did I prefer the old joint ownership model – yes, did they ever fund the club – no.

Marc

Uwot

Well that’s the issue – if a large number of clubs across Europe all need to raise money desperately then prices will come down, the problem is how many clubs are going to be in a position to buy and at what point to clubs say “whilst we need the money it’s false economy to sell a player at that amount”.

“Football itself needs a restructuring. Hopefully this covid-19 is a trigger to spark off long due changes.” An interesting philosophical point. If I had a magic wand, I would defintely ban any individual or organisation from owning more than 40% of any club – not just in the England. FFP should be far more rigorously employed. Football should be owned by the fans, like the German model. The likes of Ambramovich, Middle Eastern dictators, spivs, gun-runners, war criminals and billionaires like Kroenke are involved in footbal for their own greed, personal ambition or to influence opinion about their grubby affairs.… Read more »

Pierre, For all Emery’s flaw, the mistake made in recruiting were not his. I would say that Emery’s failure helped Arsenal. Because now it is Arteta’s show instead of Raul’s show. Had Arsenal so spectacularly failed, whoever would be headcoach would have no influence on the players bought. We would still trying to play catch up with ManCity, Liverpool, Chelsea, ManUtd by going after the latest shinny player flavour of the month or offered by super agents instead of trying to build a coherent squad of players. Terraloon,

This is exactly what I spent my time fighting. Statistics is about context. Without context and proper measurement, you can make the number say white or black.

However with creative accounting, you can successfully have a company in complete financial meltdown still showing a profit. Enron was just the tip of the iceberg.

Rich

I really like Arteta, but don’t understand the wankafest and assertion that he’s the second coming of peak AW?

We got booted out of the Europa league in the round of 32, and other than the odd 20-30 minute spells in games, there’s been zero improvement.

And that’s because our squad lacks balance and anything resembling dynamism

Pierre

“Maybe arteta learned some stuff with city during emery’s tenure. I don’t think its just “if we had mikel from the start we’d be fine”.

My argument against Emery from day one was his failure to address our weaknesses, we all know what that is.
At least Arteta is trying to install some discipline into our play and wants to move away from the headless chicken philosophy that was so evident under Emery.

Man management is a vital component of which Emery struggled, Wenger thrived and Arteta is learning fast not to make the same mistakes as Emery.

Valentin

Terraloon, Your 35%RTA was a good example and proved exactly why misinterpretation can be a killer. Let’s assume that 1,000 drivers go on a journey. 70 of those are drunk while going on that journey and 35 of those 70 ended causing an accident. That means that if you are drunk you have a 50% chance of causing an accident. Meanwhile the 930 non drunk drivers have 65 accidents. Chance of causing an accident that means that: Drunk => 50% chance = 35 accidents / 70 drunk drivers Sober => 7% chance = 65 accidents / 930 sober Overall =>… Read more »

Men’s beards are dirtier than dogs, study finds
Professor Andreas Gutzeit, of Switzerland’s Hirslanden Clinic, said: ‘The researchers found a significantly higher bacterial load in specimens taken from the men’s beards compared with the dogs’ fur.’ The study found all of the bearded men, aged from 18 to 76, showed high microbial counts, but only 23 out of 30 dogs had high counts. The remainder had moderate levels.

Shave up dudes… so you can mask-up better.

Marc

Well Pierre’s finally gone round the bend.

I don’t know whether he can’t acknowledge or just doesn’t see where Arsenal were when Wenger was forced to retire. He writes as if everything was going really well, Wenger left and suddenly we were out of the CL.

Just to remind people in Wenger’s last two seasons we finished 5th and then 6th. I made a comment about some fans understanding that it was going to take several years to get things back as they should be and he sees it as an attack on Wenger.

Pierre’s had him in his sex dungeon for sometime now – that level of abuse and I don’t think Ozil will ever recover.

Ozil is the noose around our necks and the chain around our ankles.

His contract, and his performance and now his selfishness says it all.
I pray he leaves this club.

“With Arteta at the helm and Raul’s sudden willingness to hide behind somebody else means that we now have a chance”

Which Arteta are you referring to? Raul is a column in the game, MA have no creds at AFC as yet to go against RS decisions, he’s just another puppet who’s salary was within the Club budget at the time. A novice manager who couldn’t get Arsenal past Olympiakos is going to dictate terms and conditions at the Club, when the Clubs results so far without luck would be worse than the manager RS just sacked 😀

Luteo Guenreira

Upamecano is going to Bayern? Hope they decide his fee is too high, although I can’t see why they wouldn’t just pay it if they want the player.

No Saliba-Upa partnership then, was really hoping for that to work out.

Valentin

GunnersDNA, Power dynamics is not reflected in job title. Sometimes somebody has the title, but everybody knows that the real decision maker is somebody else. For years Gazidis was the CEO but Wenger was the real power. Then Wenger messing things up gave Gazidis an opening to suddenly becoming the real decision maker. Even before Wenger was sacked, he had already been sidelined and Gazidis had become the main man. Once Gazidis left, Raul power grab meant that Sven left. Everything was rosy for Don. Don’t worry about it. Upamecano-Saliba would be a Vermaelen-Koscielny Partnership and it won’t work because both are front foot defenders. We need a sweeper next to Saliba. Mari and Luiz are a sweeper defender profile.

Tom

If Arsenal had employed Arteta when Wenger departed , the transition would have been seamless. 1…..no marginalisation of Ramsey and Ozil.
2……2 out of Ramsey , cazorla or wilshere would still be at the club.

——-

Pierre,
You do realize Cazorla almost lost his foot due to club’s ( Wenger ?)negligence , and both Wilshere and Ramsey had spent more time on the treatment table than the pitch, yet two out of them three would somehow guarantee the seamless transition into whatever Arteta’s style might be?!?!.

GunnerDNA

Val,

“Power dynamics is not reflected in job title. Sometimes somebody has the title, but everybody knows that the real decision maker is somebody else”

Just a reminder Stan K is American, it’s all about business. DS is the man making all the power plays at Arsenal, nobody else. Stan K didn’t become a billionaire by been stupid. AW had certain amount of power because of a healthy profit and loss account, MA is still trying to evade the harsh reality of Arsenal not into Europe, SK and JK is aware of that. Don’t get it twisted!

Marc

Who’s DS?

Why in Europe do agents get a separate, negotiable fee, unlike in the states where agents make a straight, 10% (usually) of their clients’ earnings?

Marc

Pedro

Which just means that the agents are “lubricating” the right people at UEFA and FIFA.

So much for the hope that once we got rid of Slack Bladder we’d see some of the corruption pushed out of the game!

Spanishdave

When you ask players to subsidise Stan why wouldn’t you piss them off and leave.
So bye bye Saka.
Our club is full of fools.

Marc

dave

We’re not the only club who have looked to / have done this.

Kroenke doesn’t put anything in and he no longer takes anything out, when he was taking money out it was minimal. Arsenal has to stand on it’s own two feet. if Kroenke was taking out money and still asking for this I’d agree 100% but with people losing their jobs over this asking players who are incredibly privileged in the life they have and the money they earn is not unreasonable.

Marc

dave

I’d also point out that Saka is not looking to leave because he’s been docked some money – he’s negotiating because his contract runs out next summer. He won’t make a decision on what’s going on now it’ll be who and how much is offered on the new deal.

alex cutter

Pete thx for reply clarifying the agent situation, but I’m still missing why they use that sort of convoluted system, which seems to add an unnecessary step to the process?

Stan is very privileged too and he should set an example to them all that he is part of the club to.
The players aren’t putting anything in other than their time.
Stan gets the increased value of the asset that is being paid by the fans.
He’s made about a billion in increased asset over the past ten years.
The value is there for him to realise whenever he dicides to liquidate it.

Spanishdave

Marc
Salas agent will use this to either go because the club have asked him to save Stan.
So if the offer is poor he will go.
He has his excuse.

Marc

dave

“The value is there for him to realise whenever he dicides to liquidate it.”

Exactly, so firstly he doesn’t “earn” anything until he sells secondly with what’s going on he’d have to find a buyer who’s still interested and has the cash to buy.

My house has gone up in value considerably since I bought it but that doesn’t mean I have cash in the bank does it?

Marc

dave “Salas agent will use this to either go because the club have asked him to save Stan. So if the offer is poor he will go. He has his excuse.” But he’ll leave because the offer is poor not because of what we’ve done on the wages – that just gives him an excuse to the fans? Marc

Virgin Atlantic hostesses are bricking it because BA have announced 12,000 redundancies, Branson has asked the government for a bailout and they’ve said no because Delta Airlines who own 49% of the company have said they won’t put any money in themselves.

Right now if they were offered a 12.5% reduction in salaries with no redundancies they’d bite your hand off.
