The hottest news off the press today is that David Luiz is going to have his extension clause activated, giving him another year, extending out his presence in an Arsenal shirt to 2022. That’s good news for a player firmly on the back 9 of his career. He had a lot to say in an interview with the Brazilian press about his exit from Chelsea.
“Every text message I was receiving, people were saying: ‘Come back, come back, come back, come back, we are here for you’.
“I give you the example of a gentleman there who is 75 years old. He was having breakfast with me at the time when he had the opportunity.
“He was texting me: ‘I am still waiting for you here to have breakfast again’.
“This kind of thing was so difficult for me, because I am someone that sees the heart as the most important thing.
“But then after that, in the professional way, I was saying: ‘It is a new moment for you. It is another big thing for you to do. Maybe if you stay in the comfort zone it is not going to be the best thing for you?’”

That’s more like it. I was VERY apprehensive about his arrival at Arsenal. We know he’s a huge character, but he also had a rep for being divisive, so it was touch and go about his intentions. Was he here because his super-agent pushed him here for one last payday? I think the answer we’ve had to that is a resounding NO WAY.
I think he’s been an immense presence at Arsenal this season. He had a very, very average start, but he was playing for a manager that had zero understanding of all the things he’d been used to… namely, building a defensive structure. Since Unai Bummery left the building, he’s grown as a leader, a mentor and a player on the pitch. My favourite part of the United game I went to was watching David Luiz fist bump some good build-out play from the back. He was celebrating a sequence of passes like we’d scored. Other highlights include how he works with the kids. Compare his attitude to how Thierry was with Adebayor on the Project Youth kids of 2007 and it’s clear… he’s here to do something.
I suspect he’s also here for the coaching job after. There’s a lot of respect for what Arteta is doing at Arsenal, I also reckon he sees the rapid ascent from an injured DM to one of the top jobs in world football. I think Luiz has a great mastery of the English language, he seems to be thoughtful, has a high social EQ and he has that presence you look for in a manager. That might translate into nothing, but you’d be foolish to bet against a player of his stature, that has played in midfield and defence, not at least landing a job as a manager at some point.
Anyway, needless to say, I’m a huge fan of the David Luiz signing and I think an extension to his deal is well deserved.

I forgot that the two played together. I think this is a move that the fans would love. I don’t think we’d even care if he was any good. Put him in charge of halftime oranges if you have to. We love Santi. Not having an idea about his intelligence, ability to transmit idea, or his vision of the game… I’d say the one thing I’d have him straight on is getting Nicolas Pepe training on that right foot. Make that his job. Give him the job title of ‘Head of Ambipedal Therapy’, what a role, everyone will have one in their staff within months. Jokes aside, I like the idea of having explayers around the camp. It’s good for the vibes. We should be growing our own coaches, taking a lead from the RB franchise books. Rumours continue to gather pace in Spanish media that Auba is going to push for a move to Barca. This whole scenario has been greatly complicated by the virus. He’ll slink into the last year of his deal before we’ve finished the season. That lowers his market value and makes the idea of Barca a lot more appealing. I hope it doesn’t happen, but with all the financial doom and gloom around the club, it’s hard to imagine we’d let £50m slip out the door… Aaron Ramsey’s Scudetto lifting hands seared in the brain.

Your “intel” has no bearing on this certain matter. It is regarding another player not called David Luiz.
David Luiz has his foot in the Arsenal door. The PSG fullback never got to that stage.
There is every possibility that now Luiz is in the club signed they being EDU/Kia were the main movers behind this new extension. Every possibility.
What this all boils down to is that there are posters that don’t really rate Luiz and others that think he is passable or ok. A mixed bag. A mixed response.

I’m saying something quite simple. I don’t believe any player is signed against the wishes of the manager, much less extended. This pov seems to be supported by the noise leaked from the club, meanwhile you have nothing to substantiate your claims outside of your own ramblings.
I don’t agree with the rubbish about Emery having no say in transfers, but I do think Arteta is a more demanding character and less of a pushover which I’d speculate does well in instances like this.
Another example of incompetency from Sanllehi, etal. Luiz is too old, makes too many mental mistakes and at this stage of his career he can only function in a “back three” which MA has shown no interest in employing as part of his tactics. There’s a pretty good chance we’re getting rid of Mustafi, PapaSok and Mavro in the next window (whenever that may be). That leaves us with Luiz as the only CB with any experience of playing extensively in the PL. Holding is injury prone and Chambers is out for a good while longer, neither has had extended runs in the team, always breaking down. Arteta doesn’t seem to fancy Holding either so maybe a decision on him will be made too. Then we have Saliba and possibly Mari. Arsenal could have cleared the decks somewhat of the current CBs including Luiz and brought in more than just Saliba but they have decided not to which is a shame because Luiz is not going to lead Arsenal to any real glory any more than Granit Xhaka is. Two scatty players for you right there.

So who do we keep for experience then if we’re shipping out Mustafi, PapaSok and Luiz? Of those 3 I’d rather we keep Luiz. I think it makes perfect sense to keep luiz for next year but if this means he will have two more years with us I’m not quite sure what the rush is to lock ourselves in with that 2 years is quite a long time in football for a player in their 30s, and with various other players expecting to come and go in that position it’s hard to say if he will be an expensive surplus going into the last year of his contract. And yeah we don’t have the luxury of replacing half the defensive players and the entire midfield in a single summer so priorities must be drawn up Replacing xhaka and ozil should be priorities n1 and n2. In the summer I suppose we will have Luiz Sokratis saliba holding chambers mustafi all as CBs (tho chamber is also RB cover) We will hopefully sell mustafi, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we pick up Mari at a net profit set against a mustafi sale. It might not be a world class list of CBs but there should be more than enough in there for us to have a decent pairing in the first team with some at worst passable cover. China, i really think it’s hard to second Guess the transfer market this summer. There is likely to be a lot of clubs in financial difficulties, particularly those with huge financial liabilities like Juventus or (ha ha) The Spuds. We need to get rid for sure but I doubt fees will be high. The flip side could be us picking up some great potential for reasonable prices if we keep our powder dry.

Pedro, if your on Android get an app called ‘Thenics’, it’s basically a bodyweight only exercise app. Teaches very basic calisthenics exercises right up to advanced and all you really need is a pull up bar and a dip bar but if your on lockdown you could probably muddle by without. Personally I don’t think that Arsenal will recruit more than 3-4 new players in this summer’s transfer window. There were already major changes to our squad at the start of season 2019-20 with recruitment of Tierney,Luiz,Saliba,Ceballos, Martinelli and Pepe PLUS promotion to first team squad of Saka, Smith-Rowe, Willock, Nelson and Nketiah. Well I think extending Liuz is a good idea and doing it now is brilliant. Luiz is the only defender we have who can 100% play from the back, you may view that his defending is a bit watery but you can’t be sure of that until you give him a good man at DM. Luis played at the very top and you can’t really tell me there were things he did fine then that he can’t do no more, basically Luiz is the same guy that an EPL winning side relied on. When I suggested 3-4 transfers I factored in that Arsenal have Mari, Soares and Ceballos on loan and one or two of these might be signed on permanent deals.
Therefore I don’t believe that Arsenal would sign more than one or two additional players.

So on the evidence of who needs to go I expect at least 2 more players on top of

Getting Tierney fit should be top of the list for him and then the hard part is keeping him fit. A 100% fit and firing Tierney will be an asset for the team offensively. Tierney has always been considered much better than Robertson, like not even close in terms of talent. Robertson has found himself a setup and manager to extract his peak, hopefully Arteta proves capable of doing that with Tierney.
On the number of transfers front…
I agree with the idea more than 2/3 transfers for the first XI can potentially disrupt the side, but this particular situation that’s fallen on every club diminishes that likelihood imo. This will be a significant downtime for clubs, and this can be a benefit for recruiters.

I’m not convinced that we will sign any of our loanees come the window, no reason to keep Soares, no reason for so many CB’s, and Ceballos will also probably return to Spain. But Saka isn’t the incumbent – that’s actually Kolas, Saka who’s done an amazing job has been parachuted into the position because of injuries.
Only a few weeks ago many on here were keen to sell Auba in the Summer because Martinelli can take over up front, that leaves Saka as LW and Tierney as LB.
Not sure I agree with that but it was something being argued – either way Auba’s not a LW anyway.

Disagree there, I find both fullbacks wildly overrated and riding the crest of good will Liverpool have conjured as a whole unit.
The system they play is brilliant for their respective strengths (attacking), but under scrutiny their defending has been found wanting – when the aura of invincibility is finally smashed they’ll be seen more realistically imo.
TAA to me is a much better player, his ability with the ball is top class whereas Robertson is more industrious and a bit less refined.

There are going to be people on normal salaries or even low paid who are going to really struggle through this.
As you say pure greed – they should be offering to stay on with zero salaries until this is over.
Actually on that note I’d really like to see all of the senior players at the club offer to forego one weeks wages in order for all of the match day staff and lower paid employees to receive a one off payment from the club. It would be revenue neutral and could see all of the staff receive a fairly decent amount of money – could easily be £1000 per person.

Robertson has a similar game to Nigel Winterburn…which makes him a very solid, dependable full back.
Trent Arnold is pure effortless class on the ball..
Peak Ozil gets in ahead of Arshavin, and Rosicky was more talented than Nasri when fully fit, imo*. I also thought the Gallas Verm partnership was stronger than Kos Verm when everyone played well.

Celtic aren’t a bad team but their stadium and fan base is always a key reason for their ground being a fortress
The place is absolutely rocking skin to Anfield on a home game in the CL. Incredible atmosphere, one of the best in club football. They can compete with anyone at home but usually get majorly undone away in knockout phases against any decent teams because their fans are the 12th and 13th man pushing a less than brilliant team on to decent heights at home
