Liverpool’s week just got worse + Best AFC defender of the last 25 years?

by .

Man, celebs are NOT immune to this bastard disease. It got to Idris Elba! Cannot believe it.

With all this serious stuff in the air, I’ve been pondering whether people need elite daily Arsenal content. Is it a distraction? Am I being insensitive to the ‘real’ news?

I settled on continuing.

It is my duty.

It is your RIGHT.

I WILL NOT let you down.

ONWARDS WE MARCH TOGETHER (safe spacing though, small march, no sneezers)

So until Boris J orders a blog shut down, I’ll be hitting the content harder than Marouane Chamakh hit Vegas that time.

So what have we today?

The FA’s exChief, Greg Dyke basically told Karen Brady she’s a toilet roll hoarder and needs to sanitize her self-serving mouth. Maybe a touch more eloquently, but the warning from The Big G is that the league cannot be nullified because Leeds fans are a bunch of hooligans.

“You might even have to play behind closed doors to fulfil the contracts for the broadcasters, otherwise they are just not going to pay up, and that could mean hundreds of millions of pounds. You may even have to play three matches a week just to get them done.

“I can see if you are a Norwich fan or of a team like West Ham, you might be delighted if the season was cancelled.

“At a club like Leeds, their fans would go nuts. You can also imagine clubs taking legal action, especially the more litigious ones.”

Oof, scary.

I think we’re going to have to see how Covid-19 performs over the coming weeks before we can start worrying about next season, but what we do know, is despite my mum telling me everyone is overreacting, the reality is this is pretty fucking serious and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

You know who else isn’t leaving anytime soon?

Gary O to the D.

Liverpool came in for him – which must mean he’s the best in the world – and he told them to do one. This from David Ornstein at the well priced Athletic you should certainly sign-up for:

Impassioned pleas by technical director Edu and head coach Mikel Arteta, in particular, helped convince the former Ireland rugby union medic not to leave. The development is seen across the industry as something of a coup, given the regard in which O’Driscoll is held.

Mikel Arteta apparently convinced him with this line.

‘Gary, you do know Liverpool is like, in Liverpool? No duck pâté with your goat milk latte there, son. It’s Nescafe with a slab of PUT THAT SUN NEWSPAPER IN THE BIN’

All you need to know about the man is that we lost our manager to the disease, but no one else. That’s the sort of defending we could do with in games, take note Mikel.

Not a lot of news today… which means… yep, you guessed it, some hot press from the billionaire playboy of Africa, Aliko Dangote. Football.London has obviously been slipped a few pennies to plant a story that connects a press release about our £650m valued squad, to the African ponying up for Arsenal one day. I like this quote from what he said in Jan.

“It is a team that yes I would like to buy someday, but what I keep saying is we have $20billion worth of projects and that’s what I really want to concentrate on,”

Sounds like a builder giving you the lowdown on when he can get to relaying your drive.

Big Tony Adams has been in the press with some good and some bad noise.

The good:

“He (Mikel Arteta) is doing a great job,”

“I really like the man and his enthusiasm. I am glad he is well and recovered from the virus.

“I have been speaking for the last 10 years about recruitment at the club and I think that really needs to up it’s game.

Then the bad:

“The coach is irrelevant. (Unai) Emery was a fantastic coach but recruitment let him down.

NO TONY! You cannot say the coach is irrelevant whilst desperately trying to get back into the game as a coach. Imagine his interview.

‘So Tony, what can you offer the club?’

‘Absolutely nothing sir’

Deary me. This notion that only players matter is so tired. YES elite players can take you a long way, but so can great training, well motivated player and a powerful vision. Julian Nagelsmann to Hoffenheim from nearly getting relegated to Champions League football in a year. That is not about elite players my friends.

Right, let’s play a game today, give me your fave defender of the last 25 years… in the below format. I’ll put the best comments in a post tomorrow.

Why you love them:

These things are computer generated now. Read about moderna developing the vaccine if you get time.

@ China1 “It was worrying as hell that until a couple of days ago our approach was flying in the face of international scientific evidence and talk of 60+% of people potentially catching it was alarming as fuck.” The problem is there isn’t any international scientific evidence. It’s guesswork. The consensus could be completely wrong and we could find another huge outbreak in the months ahead before there’s a vaccine.. All we have is thinking on the subject from the WHO people and the UK’s Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Adviser. No one knows what will work and what… Read more »

If we’re discussing defenders then the no 1 is actually quite easy – not even a Bergkamp-Henry dilemma. Much as I loved Sol Campbell and Martin Keown, there is one name that towers over all since 1995 – TONY ADAMS Adams was there right at the beginning of the George Graham days and instrumental in the early Wenger regime. He was named as club captain over the likes of David O’Leary (a huge favourite of mine during the Terry Neill days) and at the time I thought it was absurd given he was at 19 and only just out of… Read more »

‘Basically they are “crowd cowards ” and the sort of people who if they opened
their stupid mouths to my face thirty years ago would be “hospitalised”.’

ES,

You a champ back in the day?

What’s your best move? A quick short one straight to the nose or a deliberately telegraphed heavy upper swing that would land properly nonetheless?

I think Tony and Pierre should show more respect then.

Champagne Charlie

Un

There’s not going to be participation into new season without a transfer window. You can have as much disruption as you like but inevitably there’s going to be a resumption of the normal practices associated with the sport, particularly the business aspects.

When that is is anyone guess, the fact it’ll return eventually isn’t. A new season with all squads having to remain as is? That’s such a daft concept.

Gentlebris

My bad, ES. I forgot parts of the movie.

Pierre is actually your ally!

Micheal

Best defender ?

For me it is Martin Keown. I never saw anyone who enjoyed defending as much as Martin Keown.
I also recall a TV interview with Alan Shearer. When asked who was the toughest defender he ever faced, Shearer did not hesitate for a second – Martin Keown.

Marc

What I find to be really loathsome about this is how the news – Sky and BBC in particular are trying to force sound bites out of politicians or “experts” that are designed to induce panic.

They really should know better.

Guns of Hackney

I watched a snail crawl across the edge of a straight razor.

Marc

“What would Jesus say?”

Would someone please get me down off this fucking cross – is a fair bet!

Marc

Hackney

Great film but I thought you’d all out “drop the bomb kill them all”

Guns of Hackney

Here we go. Religion.

Here’s the crux. Will we, as humans, learn from whatever comes from this pandemic?

The answer will be a resounding no. We are destined to kill each other until the earth is once again ruled by the animals. Oh, and plants.

Guns of Hackney

Marc

Alas, it’s gone too far now. If it was isolated to a town, I would 100% say, brick them in. But, it’s everywhere now. Too late.

Marc

It’s worse than that – Tesco’s has had Easter Eggs on sale at half price for weeks.

Tortured to death for a discount sale!

Guns of Hackney

At least she’s a positive sounding young lass.

I don’t hurt animals. I’ve got building work going on and I’m saving the spiders that are crawling out of the rubble.

Guns of Hackney

Chocolate eggs.

We’re fat enough. Also, can you imagine the health epidemic after this clears up? Obesity up 1,000,000 %.

All those home cooked pizzas and sweets being gobbled down by porky pig. Yuck.

The UK will basically be kids and fatsos with underlying health issues resulting in death anyway.

And the animals and plants.

G

Kenny sansom.. Think we got him when clive Allen who hardly played went the other way
Not sure re Tony Adams.. Great leader but saw him get ripped apart v Dean Saunders.. Van Basten though he could to most defenders

Guns of Hackney

On a lighter note. Mission Impossible 7 is on its way. The best movie franchise after Harry Potter…or Friday the 13th.

Can you imagine if Corbyn was in charge during this?

Sweet baby Jesus.

Are the hipsters still allowed to go out to bars that serve cocktails in converse trainers?

Is anyone thinking of the hipsters?

Guns, barbers are more of an issue for the hipsters than bars, I reckon!

That’s because it’s a lot nicer than what everyone used to call you back home!

Why is Boris refusing to close schools?. You guys have a mini-Trump running the show.
He will probably do it next week like he’s suffering from catatonic slowness.

Guns of Hackney

Bob

Good point. Who is going to shape those beards and fades?

Marc

Dissenter

Because the knock on effects of closing schools are huge when kids so far aren’t at risk from the virus – it’s not a case of can’t be bothered.

Up 4 grabs now

Close the schools and whose babysitting the kids, while parents and health industry nurses doctors etc are at work.

That’s right lots of grandparents who need to be around snotty kids right now.

Vladdy P

Only one of us has followed the quarantine guidelines properly, Pedro. It wasn’t you.

Marc

Un

If everyone stops going to work your kids are going to starve and that’s before the entire economy shuts down which means no NHS full stop – who’s going to provide medical services for you Mum if she falls ill with a completely unrelated issue?

People need to think this through more.

tenerife gooner

Lee Dixon ,saw his Arsenal debut. What a wimp, what is George playing at,what a waste of Money. He is so delicate ,he will never make it.WTF DO I KNOW.

Marc

tenrife

But don’t you just love it when it turns out you got one of those wrong!

Up 4 grabs now

UN

If your a doctor, nurse, anybody that works in the health industry, and bare in mind the NHS is the biggest employer in the government with millions of employees.
Who are looking after their kids when they still have to work.

People aren’t all self isolating, and this will still get spread just at a slower rate.

Marc

U4GN

There’s also another aspect to this – after a few months when everyone’s not dead people get bored and get lax with precautions “We’re all fine and Mum hasn’t seen the Grandkids in months” you then have a secondary outbreak and have to start from scratch again.

Really strict rules can only be maintained without extreme measures for so long – that’s why the medical advisors have talked about the right impact at the right time.

Up 4 grabs now

Eventually people will have to go back to work, otherwise the country grinds to a halt, and that won’t be allowed to happen.

Boris is a buffoon (great word we should use it more often)
But even he knows he doesn’t want to go down in history that brought Britain to a standstill.

By the way isn’t it amazing no one has mentioned brexit for 2 weeks now!

Up 4 grabs now

Marc,

True, it will happen you’ll get a second spike as people have relaxed and thought it passed by.
Until a working vaccine is up and running this will always be around.

Not in the numbers that weve seen over the last few weeks but it will spike again after it has calmed down.

Ad-O

PAOLO MALDINI

He’s the best, he’s cool, he has dreamy eyes, and he hates Ivan G.
Best moment is either European Cup Final ’94 or telling Ivan to GTFO of Milan.

Up 4 grabs now

UN,

I reckon it’s a big conspiracy by andrex & Kleenex to make us buy bog rolls and tissue!

No help for the self employed or people renting from private landlords, two very obvious omissions. And much of the ‘help’ for businesses is in the form of loans. Sadly typical politics, looks good on the surface but dig a little deeper and the picture isn’t so sweet.

Player: Peter Simpson
Loved this player who was Arsenal through and through, playing mostly at centre half alongside Frank McLintock. No caps as his era coincided with Bobby Moore, but a mainstay of our team in what were pretty lean years.
No particular best moment, but he did play in those Fairs Cup runs and our 2-1 FA Cup final win over Liverpool.

Can’t believe didn’t get any backing over Kenny sansom.. Second sol Campbell.. Best moment put us 1 up v Barcelona and I had him as 1st goalscorer

Valentin

I think that Steve Bould is really been underrated. He never had the charisma of Tony Adams not the dogged defending of Martin Keown, but I think he was the more complete/rounded player of the three. He could defend, but could also distribute from the back. I still remember Tony Adams scoring against Everton to get the title. Everybody was bewildered by Tony Adams galloping forward and then the volley was just pure surprise and elation at the same time. Martin Keown had the Van Nistelroy confrontation moment of madness, but Steve Bould never had any of these moment and… Read more »

In terms of our ‘best’ (that is truly world class) defender over that period sadly it’s probably Cashley (feels dirty just typing that). Major cock up letting him go.

It’s fair to say that the next biggest worry beyond the physical health of the elderly/chronically ill is the financial impact this is likely to have in the short term.

So far worldwide there have been 198 thousand cases of Corona virus with 7 thousand deaths. 82 thousand have recovered.

A pandemic is an infectious disease that has spread across multiple continents and infected a large number of the population.

From Greek, Pan meaning all and demos meaning people.

There are nearly 8 billion people on the planet.

There are 9 million people living in London alone.

198,000 infected out of 8,000,000,000.

That is NOT a large number.

This is NOT a pandemic.

The media and the governments are LYING.

Something else is going on here.

Another great post Pedro, Best Arsenal defender for me is Tony Adams for all the obvious reasons already mentioned, however the best defender after him and whose signing excited me the most was Sol Campbell. I’d always admired him at Spurs and always dreamed of us signing him. Thanks for your thoughts; I was just curious.

My belief that Covid is going to be far worse than any flu strain before it unless it can be contained by lockdown initially and when a vaccine is ready.

That’s not backed up by any data, just a gut feeling I’ve since the outbreak in China.

Be safe from Covid with your family, Benny.

Dark Hei

Benny

As long as you take precautions, I guess you are entitled to your views.

Appreciate that even though you disagree, you sing along.

Me and China1 are at ground zero when this shit happens and I can tell you, it ain’t seasonal flu but you don’t need to hear that from us.

I don’t think you need to isolate; just practise social distancing and don’t do stupid things like go to a Sterophonics concert.

Dark Hei

Tony

Covid-19 belongs to a different class of viruses different from seasonal flu.

They are in the same class as SARS and MERS.

Tony

Dark Hei That was what initially sparked my gut feeling to look into Covid-19 more when that (SARS etc) was reported early doors in Wuhan. I drew my own conclusion that this virus would become a pandemic and kill thousands globally possibly 10 of thousands with it not being inconceivable to kill 100s of thousands. My conclusion wasn’t a revelation as many more people were thinking similarly. I believe the only real way of killing the virus is for complete lockdowns where there are confirmed infected cases; entire country lock downs if absolutely necessary. Keep all flights grounded and ban… Read more »

Apart from life, death and suffering the longer this continues the more hardship and misery people are going to suffer through no fault of their own.

I feel equally sorry for those people as those who experience losing a family member or friend.

Benny – the issue is you’ll have to include the math experts at the London School of Tropical Medicine and I think it was UCH experts of lying. It certainly doesn’t suit the conservatives to piss off their self employed ( very likely to vote con ) supporters. I say this as a Labour Party member. I don’t believe that the games can be resumed normally on 4th of April. Since the TV networks are under a lot of pressure, I can see the games will be played with a closed stadium.
I wonder whether players are given the choice to stay home.

Look I’d love to see football back – I don’t mean for people to attend matches but to be played behind closed doors but players are going to get or be exposed to the virus. For the remaining matches team selections could be massively affected by players in self isolation.

Can’t see how they can even consider re starting the PL with the current mood amongst people.

Valentin

The season will not restart until mid May at the earliest even if players behind closed door. Next week, the country will enter a period of lockdown for 3~4 weeks. Mandatory isolation means players, staff will not be able to do any team training. Unless players have their own gym at home, they won’t be able to go to the gym, just running on their own in the park/garden.
