Liverpool’s week just got worse + Best AFC defender of the last 25 years?

by .

Man, celebs are NOT immune to this bastard disease. It got to Idris Elba! Cannot believe it.

With all this serious stuff in the air, I’ve been pondering whether people need elite daily Arsenal content. Is it a distraction? Am I being insensitive to the ‘real’ news?

I settled on continuing.

It is my duty.

It is your RIGHT.

I WILL NOT let you down.

ONWARDS WE MARCH TOGETHER (safe spacing though, small march, no sneezers)

So until Boris J orders a blog shut down, I’ll be hitting the content harder than Marouane Chamakh hit Vegas that time.

So what have we today?

The FA’s exChief, Greg Dyke basically told Karen Brady she’s a toilet roll hoarder and needs to sanitize her self-serving mouth. Maybe a touch more eloquently, but the warning from The Big G is that the league cannot be nullified because Leeds fans are a bunch of hooligans.

“You might even have to play behind closed doors to fulfil the contracts for the broadcasters, otherwise they are just not going to pay up, and that could mean hundreds of millions of pounds. You may even have to play three matches a week just to get them done.

“I can see if you are a Norwich fan or of a team like West Ham, you might be delighted if the season was cancelled.

“At a club like Leeds, their fans would go nuts. You can also imagine clubs taking legal action, especially the more litigious ones.”

Oof, scary.

I think we’re going to have to see how Covid-19 performs over the coming weeks before we can start worrying about next season, but what we do know, is despite my mum telling me everyone is overreacting, the reality is this is pretty fucking serious and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

You know who else isn’t leaving anytime soon?

Gary O to the D.

Liverpool came in for him – which must mean he’s the best in the world – and he told them to do one. This from David Ornstein at the well priced Athletic you should certainly sign-up for:

Impassioned pleas by technical director Edu and head coach Mikel Arteta, in particular, helped convince the former Ireland rugby union medic not to leave. The development is seen across the industry as something of a coup, given the regard in which O’Driscoll is held.

Mikel Arteta apparently convinced him with this line.

‘Gary, you do know Liverpool is like, in Liverpool? No duck pâté with your goat milk latte there, son. It’s Nescafe with a slab of PUT THAT SUN NEWSPAPER IN THE BIN’

All you need to know about the man is that we lost our manager to the disease, but no one else. That’s the sort of defending we could do with in games, take note Mikel.

Not a lot of news today… which means… yep, you guessed it, some hot press from the billionaire playboy of Africa, Aliko Dangote. Football.London has obviously been slipped a few pennies to plant a story that connects a press release about our £650m valued squad, to the African ponying up for Arsenal one day. I like this quote from what he said in Jan.

“It is a team that yes I would like to buy someday, but what I keep saying is we have $20billion worth of projects and that’s what I really want to concentrate on,”

Sounds like a builder giving you the lowdown on when he can get to relaying your drive.

Big Tony Adams has been in the press with some good and some bad noise.

The good:

“He (Mikel Arteta) is doing a great job,”

“I really like the man and his enthusiasm. I am glad he is well and recovered from the virus.

“I have been speaking for the last 10 years about recruitment at the club and I think that really needs to up it’s game.

Then the bad:

“The coach is irrelevant. (Unai) Emery was a fantastic coach but recruitment let him down.

NO TONY! You cannot say the coach is irrelevant whilst desperately trying to get back into the game as a coach. Imagine his interview.

‘So Tony, what can you offer the club?’

‘Absolutely nothing sir’

Deary me. This notion that only players matter is so tired. YES elite players can take you a long way, but so can great training, well motivated player and a powerful vision. Julian Nagelsmann to Hoffenheim from nearly getting relegated to Champions League football in a year. That is not about elite players my friends.

Right, let’s play a game today, give me your fave defender of the last 25 years… in the below format. I’ll put the best comments in a post tomorrow.

Need the blogging mate, keep it up!!

Has to be W Gallas after sitting in the middle of the pitch in the birmingham game in 2008 then staying on at the club after that.

Funny Adams jab Pedro, made me laugh

Pascal Cygan. So many laughs.

Name: SOL FRICKIN CAMPBELL Why I love him: anyone who doesn’t love Campbell should be sent to Siberia to perform slave Labour on a Russian railroad. He was an elite player, elite personality, total winner, leader, classy as fuck off the pitch and used to physically dominate strikers with his ridiculously hulking frame, he was also quicker than should be possible over long distances because he’d build up momentum like a freight train Fav moment: I have two. 1) him shoulder barging a Portsmouth player who was in mid air attempting an overhead clearance and the guy flew 2 meters… Read more »

My grandma always told me that sol Campbell looked exactly like my grandpa which is hilarious because my grandpa was white.

There is a tiny resemblance somehow tho

Seems the UK gov is finally turning towards logical and reasonable measures and for that I’m extremely grateful. The start may have been slow and there may be a bit more to do, but the direction is certainly good now and the overall approach makes sense It was worrying as hell that until a couple of days ago our approach was flying in the face of international scientific evidence and talk of 60+% of people potentially catching it was alarming as fuck. Thankfully the government has walked that back. No more herd immunity targets, no more mitigation measures risking lives… Read more »

I think the first thing people need to be aware of is that social distances measures take time to stop the spread The UK is still going to see an explosion in numbers because there will still be loads of people who caught it, didn’t show symptoms but spread it to their entire household (and extended family in many cases). But what happens is after a month or so, those households will have gone through that phase and will be all clear which is where the numbers will start falling quite quickly as The vast majority of transmissions are within… Read more »

Surely our best defender is Tony Adams and it not even close. I love him because he was brilliant defender but, more importantly, he was able to convince me to give football a chance. When I was kid growing up in Canada, boys played ice hockey and girls played soccer, so I did not have good opinion of football when I first arrived in London all those years ago. My first job was in a gooner pub, one of our regulars had spare ticket to Nottingham forest, and took me to see it where I learned to love football and… Read more »

Pedro, I am locked in the swamps of Jersey in semi-isolation. Your blog is all that keeps me from painting a face on my football and naming it Wilson. I’m pained to admit how many times I check each day to see if you’ve written. Keep up the good work. Now things to write about: I was surprised that you didn’t comment on the financials when they were published a few weeks ago. I am surprised that you didn’t comment on the squad’s estimated value today (apart from one line). Favourite defender (although not the best) in the Premier League… Read more »

@china, you’re spot on. It looks as though the UK gvt finally got cold feet on the idea of condemning upwards of 300,000 Tory voters to their deaths and has changed tack. Of concern now is the lack of testing, the lack of adequate equipment in hospitals and for doctors, the foothold the virus will have made while the government dithered and allowed huge events to go on and the lack of clarity over provision of support for the elderly as they look to quarantine themselves and start to order food and provisions online for the first time. So, it’s… Read more »

I was just thinking that if there’s one positive about all this is that the virus kills a much larger percentage of racist voters than non-racist ones since in every country — the older the age group the more likely they are to vote right wing.

If the pandemic killed tens of millions, which I still think it won’t, it would mean a faster shift to more progressive politics than expected.

China1

Kris V I’m not sure killing racists is a positive… If progressive politics is what you want, wouldn’t the progress line be about education, forgiveness etc rather than ‘at least the people who have opinions I don’t like are dead’ That’s the least progressive outlook you could have on all this. As well the reason the virus has been able to spread so easily is because we live in a globalized world. The kind of world many of the older generation and racists have been saying is bad for the UK all along. You’ll probably find the ring wing is… Read more »

ES I’m sure your dinner with the WHO hierarchy was both enlightening and fascinating, especially the part where WHO doctors called out Boris for his herd immunity fiasco. Also even if I could visit the UK with my wife tomorrow, I’m not sure that I would bring her specifically because I think the chances of her being on the end of some racism as a chinese going around Bristol wearing a face mask would probably be a lot higher than in any normal circumstances Another issue this virus will highlight is how the UK should be more self sufficient because our food, energy, utilities etc are so heavily tied to global trade and imports that when borders shut and trade is hurt, the UK will suffer badly. The NHS will surely get the credit it deserves after a long war on the frontline for the country

Bless the lot of the workers as they’re in for an awful few months now. In China and Italy healthcare workers had to work 6-8 hour shifts without even going to the bathroom because they were in full body hazmat suits. Complete exhaustion, adult nappies/diapers, and still thousands of chinese doctors caught the virus anyway. Many died.

Bless the NHS and good luck to every one of the healthcare workers who will be leading this effort.

Dark Hei

Lee Dixon

So consistent even Wenger couldn’t phase him out.

Fav moment when his kid cried when he had to play for country over club (if I recall correctly)

Dark Hei

And then we have this problem of a generation that goes too deep into identity politics that they no longer see the other person as an individual, merely a statistic.

China1

Does anyone else have fifa 20? Dixon’s commentary in that is jokes

I dunno why but they’ve made him really sarcastic and unnecessarily negative which always makes me laugh

The keeper will pull off an absolute worldwide and the lead commentary is giving him loads of praise and Dixon chimes in golden nuggets like flatly saying ‘well he’s a goalkeeper and that’s his job’

It’s like 70% of his script is negative or sarcastic

Name : bacary Sagna ( weirdest name ever)
Why: saw him on his debut match and thought he was going to flop even though he played a solid 7/10.
After that it’s just been one consistent performance after another.

Fav moment, was when he back kicked a ball to clear it off the goal line against a team whose name escapes me.

China1,

What’s the current response in china?

Are you guys still under quarantine?

Interested to know what happens once a lockdown is removed, does the virus just explode again as many expect it will?

Andy1886

Thanks for the post Pedders. Dyke is an idiot if he thinks that clubs are going to play three times a week behind closed doors and the one who has half the squad out isolating or ill and as a consequence gets relegated isn’t going to sue. Typical of the man who only has eyes on the money.

Best defender would be TA pipping Sol in the way that Dennis just pips TH14 as our greatest ever player.

Ustyno

Name : Bacary Sagna
Why I love him : we hardly have consistent performers but he was one of the few, calm, mature and professional
Best moments : whenever he was called up to deputise in the middle he does it without fuse and excellently,he went to man city and never heard much noise, just his game and step aside

He is not my best defender far from it but at a time where we were almost always disastrous at the back he becomes my favorite because of his consistency

China1

Sagna was a fabulous servant for arsenal! Unai we’re in a slow process of opening now. My company is letting people return to work this week having been closed since around the 24th of Jan! Even now only 1/4 of the people are allowed back, temperature taken on entry, everyone must wear a mask, canteen closed etc. next week will be another 1/4 back in and so on. No restaurants allow seating, takeaway only, shopping malls manage the number of people allowed in… Read more »

Name – Shkodran Mustafi ( Also known as Shkodran Baresi)

Why- 1)Ability to completely shut off his brain in critical moments.
2) Ability to perform as a 1-man backline after costing us a goal

Fav moment- Not one but many when he has showcased his aforementioned abilities to the full.

Thumping header against the Spuds.

Vladdy P

Don’t know if we are talking just arsenal or everywhere, but for me was Alessandro Nesta. Guy was just unbeatable whatever you tried, whether in the air or the ground and so intelligent. Him, cannavaro and Maldini in the same team was ridiculous.

Gentlebris

I thought some Aussie was talking about chloroquine yesterday, or was he having too much to drink? Surely people who feel they are showing covid-19 symptoms must have eaten some chloroquine, and if the virus disappears as that dude claims then some C rated journalists would have made a gold mine of it. Headline today should be CORONAVIRUS ARRESTED BY CHLOROQUINE. Maybe too early for all of that to have happened. There is one major question, which needs perhaps to be discussed.

Clearly the Leisure Industry [including Football] which is one of the major employers [approximately 20% in UK] is going to be in serious financial difficulty.

Can you see Kroenke holding onto ownership of Arsenal once this crisis is over? He will have enough on his plate with his sports franchises and property interests in USA.

Stroller, The retail industry was already reeling under the online assault on their bottom line. Best goal from a defender? With an honourable mention to TA’s charge downfield to net the fourth against Everton I would go for Nutty’s blaster against Wimbledon in May 1989. Absolute belter.

Sol Campbell by a country mile was Arsenals best
of the last 25 years.

Globalgunner

Favourite defender Keown, but love Lauren too. The man absolutely didnt give a fuck and would tear out your intestines rather than let you get by him….and to think we replaced him with Eboue the Coco clown a man who could nt run ten yards without falling down for no reason

Best/worst back 4 combo of the last 25 yrs:

Oleg Luzhny
Igor Stepanovs
Pascal Cygan (remember his brace at Highbury?)
Andre Santos

Squillaci and Sylvestre almost made the cut…

Tom

Paolo Maldini hands down.
Skill, pace, size , longevity and rock star looks to boot.
Not a single weakness to his game and everything he did was at an absolute top level.
He was as comfortable making a last ditch tackle as a cheeky nutmeg on an unexpected winger.
He was the best in the world during a time when Serie A was the go to destination for worlds best attacking talent.

Fair comment. My question was because he had borrowed money to buy shares in club last year and we know that he has heavy commitments in USA specifically with building new stadium.

Name: Adams.

Why you love them: The ability to resurrect his career after alcoholism, prison and age is an inspiration to millions. Not to mention all the good his Sporting Chance has done. Being the leader of THAT defence. Being captain of Arsenal.

Best moment: Everton. Obviously.

Stop referring to Dangote as “the African”, it’s weird.

He’s Nigerian. You wouldn’t call someone French, German or even British as “the European”.

It’s uncomfortable to read. I’ve noticed it before, it’s happened again so I’d like to express the discomfort it causes.

Bob N16

Guns, agree with TA. Remember being at his first home game(If memory serves!) when he matched Ian Rush for pace, thinking we’ve got a player here!

TitsMcGee

Every one of my non-Brit friends have been messaging me asking me what Boris is smoking. The “you will lose loved ones” and “herd immunity” debacle of particular interest.

Also idiots still jet-setting all over the place for leisure travel to some of the hardest hit countries because “they made these plans months ago and they don’t want to waste the 45 quid they spent on the ticket” lol

Moray

Jamie, that Senderos video is cracking. Thanks for the share.

Keown also a good call. One of the last guys you would want to play against. And should have remained our defensive coach.

O’Leary was my guy growing up, so I’m always happy to see him in the stands these days. Plus he broke Leeds.

Moray

“when he matched Ian Rush for pace”

Maybe he had his brandy bottle caught in Rush’s shorts?

Spanishdave

I always remember Sol when we played Portsmouth.
The game was going nowhere we were tippy tippy mode.
He got the ball at the halfway line bashed his way past four players and hoofed it into the net from 25 yds. Then he gave that look which said ‘ that’s the way to do it,’

Hard to believe that teams are talking transfers. There may be ZERO sport of any type for years.

Dr on radio just laid it down “viruses have thousands of years head start on us and are really good at exploiting human weakness”.

Marc

The best thing about Campbell was how his career became a serious one after he left he Spud’s and joined us. He was always a talented defender but he had to leave the shower down the road to start playing on the big stage.

Liam Brady was so good to watch, he and Bobby Moore were one offs
His goal v Spuds in that 5-2 game.

Actually, people do that all the time.

Marc

Hackney The science advisor for the times was on the radio this morning talking about the 2nd briefing after Boris’s yesterday where the government science experts were explaining the data and how decisions are being made. He said it’s genuinely frightening because once we start moving into the measure we’re now taking it’s very difficult to remove them without a vaccine in place. I don’t know why we’re talking transfers – the way things are moving I can’t see the season being played out and next season starting anywhere near a conventional start date.

andy1886

Marc, if the regulators play ball no reason why a vaccine can’t be delivered more quickly. Is the will there? The current regulations are massively weighed towards safety of those trialling new treatments. If we can relax that a bit (pay people large sums to take part if necessary) we can get this done in half the time, or sooner. Time for our ‘leaders’ to start leading.

andy I don’t think it’s that simple – what the guy was saying (and I’m quoting from memory so not my opinion) the first stage is a small scale test of a few hundred, it then takes 3 months to see if there are any side effects. Assuming that’s all OK 2nd stage is rolled out to a few thousand who are expected to come into contact with the virus to see if it works, that takes a further 6 months. 3rd stage is then mas vaccination – he said stage can be accelerated by a few months. No argument there’ll be a transfer window but will it be at the normal time? We still don’t know how the TV money situation is going to pan out and if clubs are playing behind closed doors they lose gate revenue as well.

Marc, that’s true as things stand. They can cut those periods, they are designed for being ultra cautious because drug companies don’t like being sued. Change the regulations and let governments give legal protection and that can be shorter. This is why I suggested pay volunteers huge sums for the extra risks. While that is going on drug companies can gear up for mass production. I work for a US drug company that makes flu vaccines (grown in eggs), it’s not a complicated process really.

Marc

andy I’m not saying making the vaccine is going to be the problem – it’s getting it to the stage where it can start to be manufactured on a huge scale. Saying pay people to under go testing – I’m not sure that’s the problem you still need to make sure there aren’t any serious side effects and that it actually works.
