The complexity of doing the right thing / Surviving the Covid-19 meltdown

by .

Well, things are unravelling at quite a pace. No sooner had Arsenal announced that Mikel Arteta had been downed by the cursed Covid-19, Leicester, Chelsea, Bournemouth and City also leaked that they had players and staff being isolated.

The Premier League, facing pressure from all angles eventually did the right thing and announced a suspension of the season until at least early April.

This still felt a bit fantastical, but it at least kept the season alive. Today, the reality is dawning on many that the season has a very, very low chance of seeing its logical conclusion. The UK Gov scientists, whilst pushing their odd strategy of herd immunity, have declared that they don’t think we’ll be hitting Peak-Covid-19 until the middle of June. By then, any hope of rescuing the season will be well and truly buried.

So before we jump into that, the good news is Mikel has told the virus that he is disappointed in it and it’s not living up to his exacting principles of the game.

‘Of course I am disappointed, this is not how we want to play’

He’s beating it into shape and expected to make a full recovery. It’s great to see the world of football fandom supporting his recovery tweets. Look at those numbers man, outrageous.

In Le Grove news, we had our first victim of the virus. Ernest from the comments, we all wish you and your wife the speediest of recoveries. That goes for anyone else, BIG love from this .co.uk.

So back to the Premier League.

This situation could turn into a bit of a debacle for fans, clubs and players.

Settling the League

I think we’re all fairly ok with the idea of handing Liverpool the title. It works out nicely for everyone. Obviously they won, but their fans can never obnoxiously bray about it. Firstly, they won it part-time. Secondly, they were beaten (lololol). They’ll never have full bragging rights because they didn’t finish it from a mathematically conclusive position. They’ve basically won Wembley Doubles on the technicality that the sun went down and there are no floodlights in the park… there’s also a guy in the bushes who looks like a pervert.

Imagine the song:

‘We won the league, we won the league because of Covid-niiinteeen’

The big question is what happens to the positions of the other clubs? Karen Brady has said she thinks they should be given their positions from last season.

‘Suspension or cancellation of the league was always a certainty.’

‘There is no dodging the possibility that all levels in the EFL, as well as the Premier League, will have to be cancelled and this season declared null and void because if the players can’t play the games can’t go ahead.’

This comment stands out more aggressively than a sneezer on the tube. She’s laid her stake in the ground early on. It’s very crass. But if we dig into the reality of what that would mean… it’d take Arsenal to 5th in the league and back into the Champions League.

Am I going to fight this sort of righteous thinking? Absolutely not. I kid, I kid. It’d be lunacy to dumb it down to something like that. Next years football season wouldn’t start, there’d be protests strong than Steve Bruce in that cup game, and a whole host of clubs would file legal complaints. Remember, right now 12th to 5th is only 8 points. You could literally have Everton lodging a complaint here. It might be unrealistic, but on paper, it’s far from it.

How would you decide who was relegated? 20th to 16th is currently a gap of 6 points. That is NOTHING.

Who would tell Leeds and WBA that they weren’t allowed into the Premier League next season? How do you decide the playoffs? 6th to 13th has a miserly 6 points splitting them!

It’s almost too complicated to engage with. You look at the dramz it’d cause, you wonder if there is any way they can cancel the season? Maybe they have to pick it up again. Maybe the entire football calendar globally has the chance to be resynced to something more normal. How would you feel about the season starting in January and running through the summer? I’d be down for it. Let’s fucking do it. Summer football here we come!

The money

Soooo, about the cash/money. Firstly, Arsenal are going to lose about £10m in gate receipts. Then there’s the hefty question of fan compensation. This is a force majeure, no doubt, but there are going to be a lot of fans fearing for their jobs right now, so getting a refund on a ticket they didn’t get full use out of is going to be a top, top priority.

Will football take the route of big business? The Delta CEO has given up his salary. Google are paying their contractors. Most are resisting layoffs (he says after week one). They are all keen to take a stand that keeps their businesses intact / doesn’t leave them hate figures when all this settles down. Will the club ask players to take a hit for the fans? That is a huge question. We’re not in great shape as it is financially, so how we deal with this will be interesting.

… but it gets more complicated. The TV beasts pay for sport. If the clubs don’t complete the season, the cash goes. At the minute, that looks like it could be a further £37.5m per club. That is absolutely huge if you’re any size of club, but damn, think of the small ones. How can Aston Villa absorb such a loss with money committed? Can you really ask media companies to take that on as a gesture? Will advertiser pony up to put their brands against Sky Gold Classics? I have my doubts. Every money challenge you read about has another tied to it. This is not simple.

What would be interesting is this: If TV firms ask for the money back, does that annul the contracts that have been agreed? Then does that open up an opportunity for the Premier League to take a begging bowl to Jeff Bezos or Tim Cook? That could be leverage. After all, Apple and Amazon aren’t getting into bed with content to sell ad space… they also both see the VERY long game. The rundle (recurring revenue bundle) is key to their future. Is there a better way to drive an uptick in recurring subs than Premier League football distributed through their expansive pipes? I don’t think so.

At risk staff

The final concern would be all the folk that help support Arsenal during match days. Are we doing anything for them? They don’t earn a lot as it is, but the idea that these folks have had their finances blitzed, with no other clear way to earn money is quite a nasty thought. It’s also dangerous because they are the sort of people that’ll go to work sick to pay the bills.

… challenge is this: The club is literally bleeding money if all of this goes down the pan. So again, we land in a situation where you have to look to the elite of sport and billionaires to come forward and do the right thing. If I was Josh K, I’d look at this as an opportunity to be the hero, ingratiate yourself with the fanbase, and do something that is absolutely Arsenal class. Look after those vulnerable to the shocks to the economy when times are rough.

Concluding thoughts

I think this situation is unbelievably challenging and extremely complex. I think we have to go easy on Arsenal, because however they handle this, there will be parties that are affected negatively. Regardless, I really hope we take a positive stand and lead the way on doing the right thing, especially with zero hours contract type folk… more broadly, I hope that the entire Premier League can come to a resolution that puts the safety of people first and preserves the league with integrity.

Outside that, I’m going to grab the popcorn (gloved/no sharing) and see how this plays out.

Stay safe, stay distanced, and come back often… I’ll be here daily with words and sounds. See you in the comments x

I wouldn’t have expected anything less than madness in panic buying, doesn’t make it any less senseless does it? Where I am there is an attempt to give the vulnerable and elderly the first hour of the shop opening to do what they need to do first. Quite frankly anyone who buys up 6 months worth of loo roll pushing everyone else over to do so is a prick.

Jamie

Great podcast, I like the idea of a Road to Champions League 2020 Cup for the 2 remaining CL places!

Not bald and not little and you couldn’t tear a wet paper bag apart.

It also amuses me with your reaction that I didn’t call you a cunt I said don’t be one – you of course assumed I called you one because that’s what you know you are.

Strange how you avoided the main part of the comment though.

“Where I am there is an attempt to give the vulnerable and elderly the first hour of the shop opening”

Great idea – the supermarkets should also be pushing home deliveries for those you aren’t clued up on online shopping.

Whilst I agree with your general take on people over reacting your claim of 1,000 people dying from flu on average this week is bollocks – if on average a thousand people died from flu a week we’d have 52,000 a year dead from flu.

Spanishdave

The PL has to either complete or disbanded it
The relegation teams will not accept going down and the ones coming up would loose over 100 mil.
This madness has to stop .
In England over 650 people die each year falling down the stairs lets ban staircases

Eh you either need to sober up or learn English if you want to argue with me.

“You ar3 Ali’s man syndrome.”

Marc it’s not bollocks because it’s the six month flu season statistic.October to March.
Look up the Public Health Stats page 60.

Justice for staircases I say!

OK that’d mean 26,000 dead a year from flu – we don’t get that many.

Do you really think I’m going to read the ” Public Health Stats” document at 11pm on a Saturday night?

By the way Gentlebris I may have picked up an extra packet of rice, stuff like that, one extra of this and that, enough for a few weeks if need be, not for 5 years like some people have been buying. That is in no way helpful to anyone but the shareholders of Kleenex.

@RSPC Doesn’t data from other countries suggest china’s numbers aren’t wrong or significantly wrong? Italy and Iran are possible exceptions but look at those places closer to China – HK, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. Hell China is probably the safest place now from the virus. My sister inlaw works in Shanghai. They were working from home for a month but it’s pretty much back to normal in shanghai and places outside Wuhan. Just practice logical social distancing. Does anyone know how Ernest and wife are doing? If the season is over, then whatever they decide will cause chaos and upset as this season more than any other (barring the top position) is very close from 2nd to bottom in pint difference. If you run the numbers based on the uk gov plans, they’re quite staggering To achieve the UK governments target of herd immunity through 60% of people catching it that would lead to, with a 2% death rate, around 816,000 dead in the UK. That’s twice as many brits dead as the British military and civilian deaths from world war 2 combined. But the government also mentioned 80% could catch it. That would be around 1.1million dead, considerably more than the entire combined British and British empire colonial dead from ww1. Numbers this high would mean that if you are… Read more »

685,000 worldwide die each year from seasonal flu yet we don’t see the world descend into mass hysteria, quarantine and lockdown so why now? I should have been in London today for the 9th year anniversary Syrian Revolution march but it got cancelled. The police and the health authorities said it could go ahead but my Syrian friends who organise it each year didn’t want to be responsible for anyone potentially getting ill from a large public gathering so decided to postpone it for now. I guess it was the sensible thing to do under the circumstances. The founder of… Read more »

Re football, I wonder if the least bad option, (frankly I don’t think there is anything close to a good option) might be to wait until June when the situation will be under control (assuming people start isolating more and/gov enforces it) then the remaining league fixtures could be played behind closed doors with two matches per week. I can’t remember how many games are left but it’s only about 10 right? So finished in 5 weeks. Benny 685,000 die globally out of almost 7 billion people from flu each year

800,000 would realistically die in the UK alone out of 68 million in order to achieve their target ‘herd immunity’ which is also not confirmed to even be possible yet

The comparisons with flu need to stop. Corona virus is around 20x more deadly and it’s also more contagious and harder to track and treat and we don’t have a vaccine.

Its much much worse than flu

bennydevito

China, Is it though? Is it worse than flu? It is a flu. Most people who have caught it have recovered. Neil deGrass Tyson the astro physicist thinks it’s a massive experiment to see if the public trust science and follow instructions. In October the elites had a meeting headed by Bill Gates who now works in the health and vaccine industry, and discussed the possibility of a pandemic. Then in November the first case of corona virus breaks in china. How coincidental…. They ran a simulation that predicted 65m people will die. I think it’s a test run, a… Read more »

Pedro,

My 2 biggest transfer miss regrets are Brian Laudrup and Eden Hazard.

I remember George Graham wanted him and it was reported on the back of the Star that it was a done deal but it never happened.

2nd Eden Hazard. He wanted to join us from Lille and Wenger was asked about it and was told that Hazard’s dream was to play for us. Wenger replied with “let’s make his dream happen”.

We signed Gervinho.

Those 2 aside, not re-signing Cesc Fabregas with the buy back clause. What a fuck up.

Anybody else see the irony in Johnson now relying on experts whereas when Brexit was being argued, experts were scorned by him and his cronies.

Am I being gullible?

I’m not getting into a discussion about Brexit Unai, suffice to say half the country went with Johnson on it and the other half of the country didn’t. Talk of a ‘majority of hard working brits’ doesn’t really bear scrutiny!

Just look at the fatality rates if people still harbouring thoughts that Covid is just the flu

Death toll from Covid would have been huge if similar number of people catch it like the flu.

The apparent drastic measures countries put in place are attempts to halt the spread due to Covid’ highly contagious nature so that we hopefully won’t see these tolls.

A medical report early March says that the original Covid mutates to two strains one of which is super contagious.

Whoever said Henry vs man utd yeah that was one fucking hell of a goal

Not many players can trademark a goal but I don’t think I can imagine any other player in history scoring that goal. It was the embodiment of Henry in much the same way the bergkamp Newcastle goal (best goal of all time imo) is ‘the one’ for him even more so than perhaps the one for his national team and the identical one against Leicester

Guns of Hackney

Only a few Miley’s diagnosed in my shire.

As good as those were they are still far behind the Van Basten volley and Maradona’s dribble.

Historically government used the foreigners and/or the liberals as scapegoats. However for a crisis like that usual trope does not work. So in a crisis like the COVID-19 government incompetence and complete lack of leadership and accountability is being shown up. Making things as they go along. China1

Guns my take on goal quality is probably a bit unusual, because I tend to rate the most uniquely simple goals as some of the most impressive

Like that bergkamp Newcastle goal is for me better than the Maradona run in part because it was just impossibly simple whilst also unique. There are several incredible goals where a player ran through an entire team and scored and even a carbon copy from Messi.zlatan had his own unreal equivalent when at Ajax too (unreeeeeal goal).

But bergkamps was that good whilst involving so little. That’s magic

Guns of Hackney

No one is fucking when they’re at home locked up scared about a Miley.

It’s Sky box sets and biscuits.

Guns of Hackney

China

Nice validation. I think one has to weigh up the opposition, the gravity of the game, the stage etc before judging.

Van Basten was against USSR in a final.
Maradona v England in the World Cup 1/4.

Messi goal, while similar was against pub footballers. I see kids do that in the park every day.

China1

Valentin not if the UK gov adopts a 2 child policy like China haha!

Just kidding guys, cmon!

China1

Was van basten volley the one miles out on the right by the touch line where he runs in without breaking his stride and rockets it in?

That was really unique too even after all this time

Exactly. Cross from left and MVB absolutely 100% goes for goal from almost the touch line. Truly great from an all time great.

Un
Democrats are a joke because they bring a knife to a gun fight.
A plastic knife at that, or even worse, a KFC spork at times.

Tom, says something about the British voter that while Trump feels at least some need to throw the plebs a bone or two Boris feels he can do what he wants with impunity.

FYI the Coronavirus is NOT a flu virus, it’s from the same family of viruses that cause the common cold but unlike Coronavirus don’t usually affect the lower respiratory system. So comparisons with flu are pointless.
