The complexity of doing the right thing / Surviving the Covid-19 meltdown

by .

Well, things are unravelling at quite a pace. No sooner had Arsenal announced that Mikel Arteta had been downed by the cursed Covid-19, Leicester, Chelsea, Bournemouth and City also leaked that they had players and staff being isolated.

The Premier League, facing pressure from all angles eventually did the right thing and announced a suspension of the season until at least early April.

This still felt a bit fantastical, but it at least kept the season alive. Today, the reality is dawning on many that the season has a very, very low chance of seeing its logical conclusion. The UK Gov scientists, whilst pushing their odd strategy of herd immunity, have declared that they don’t think we’ll be hitting Peak-Covid-19 until the middle of June. By then, any hope of rescuing the season will be well and truly buried.

So before we jump into that, the good news is Mikel has told the virus that he is disappointed in it and it’s not living up to his exacting principles of the game.

‘Of course I am disappointed, this is not how we want to play’

He’s beating it into shape and expected to make a full recovery. It’s great to see the world of football fandom supporting his recovery tweets. Look at those numbers man, outrageous.

In Le Grove news, we had our first victim of the virus. Ernest from the comments, we all wish you and your wife the speediest of recoveries. That goes for anyone else, BIG love from this .co.uk.

So back to the Premier League.

This situation could turn into a bit of a debacle for fans, clubs and players.

Settling the League

I think we’re all fairly ok with the idea of handing Liverpool the title. It works out nicely for everyone. Obviously they won, but their fans can never obnoxiously bray about it. Firstly, they won it part-time. Secondly, they were beaten (lololol). They’ll never have full bragging rights because they didn’t finish it from a mathematically conclusive position. They’ve basically won Wembley Doubles on the technicality that the sun went down and there are no floodlights in the park… there’s also a guy in the bushes who looks like a pervert.

Imagine the song:

‘We won the league, we won the league because of Covid-niiinteeen’

The big question is what happens to the positions of the other clubs? Karen Brady has said she thinks they should be given their positions from last season.

‘Suspension or cancellation of the league was always a certainty.’

‘There is no dodging the possibility that all levels in the EFL, as well as the Premier League, will have to be cancelled and this season declared null and void because if the players can’t play the games can’t go ahead.’

This comment stands out more aggressively than a sneezer on the tube. She’s laid her stake in the ground early on. It’s very crass. But if we dig into the reality of what that would mean… it’d take Arsenal to 5th in the league and back into the Champions League.

Am I going to fight this sort of righteous thinking? Absolutely not. I kid, I kid. It’d be lunacy to dumb it down to something like that. Next years football season wouldn’t start, there’d be protests strong than Steve Bruce in that cup game, and a whole host of clubs would file legal complaints. Remember, right now 12th to 5th is only 8 points. You could literally have Everton lodging a complaint here. It might be unrealistic, but on paper, it’s far from it.

How would you decide who was relegated? 20th to 16th is currently a gap of 6 points. That is NOTHING.

Who would tell Leeds and WBA that they weren’t allowed into the Premier League next season? How do you decide the playoffs? 6th to 13th has a miserly 6 points splitting them!

It’s almost too complicated to engage with. You look at the dramz it’d cause, you wonder if there is any way they can cancel the season? Maybe they have to pick it up again. Maybe the entire football calendar globally has the chance to be resynced to something more normal. How would you feel about the season starting in January and running through the summer? I’d be down for it. Let’s fucking do it. Summer football here we come!

The money

Soooo, about the cash/money. Firstly, Arsenal are going to lose about £10m in gate receipts. Then there’s the hefty question of fan compensation. This is a force majeure, no doubt, but there are going to be a lot of fans fearing for their jobs right now, so getting a refund on a ticket they didn’t get full use out of is going to be a top, top priority.

Will football take the route of big business? The Delta CEO has given up his salary. Google are paying their contractors. Most are resisting layoffs (he says after week one). They are all keen to take a stand that keeps their businesses intact / doesn’t leave them hate figures when all this settles down. Will the club ask players to take a hit for the fans? That is a huge question. We’re not in great shape as it is financially, so how we deal with this will be interesting.

… but it gets more complicated. The TV beasts pay for sport. If the clubs don’t complete the season, the cash goes. At the minute, that looks like it could be a further £37.5m per club. That is absolutely huge if you’re any size of club, but damn, think of the small ones. How can Aston Villa absorb such a loss with money committed? Can you really ask media companies to take that on as a gesture? Will advertiser pony up to put their brands against Sky Gold Classics? I have my doubts. Every money challenge you read about has another tied to it. This is not simple.

What would be interesting is this: If TV firms ask for the money back, does that annul the contracts that have been agreed? Then does that open up an opportunity for the Premier League to take a begging bowl to Jeff Bezos or Tim Cook? That could be leverage. After all, Apple and Amazon aren’t getting into bed with content to sell ad space… they also both see the VERY long game. The rundle (recurring revenue bundle) is key to their future. Is there a better way to drive an uptick in recurring subs than Premier League football distributed through their expansive pipes? I don’t think so.

At risk staff

The final concern would be all the folk that help support Arsenal during match days. Are we doing anything for them? They don’t earn a lot as it is, but the idea that these folks have had their finances blitzed, with no other clear way to earn money is quite a nasty thought. It’s also dangerous because they are the sort of people that’ll go to work sick to pay the bills.

… challenge is this: The club is literally bleeding money if all of this goes down the pan. So again, we land in a situation where you have to look to the elite of sport and billionaires to come forward and do the right thing. If I was Josh K, I’d look at this as an opportunity to be the hero, ingratiate yourself with the fanbase, and do something that is absolutely Arsenal class. Look after those vulnerable to the shocks to the economy when times are rough.

Concluding thoughts

I think this situation is unbelievably challenging and extremely complex. I think we have to go easy on Arsenal, because however they handle this, there will be parties that are affected negatively. Regardless, I really hope we take a positive stand and lead the way on doing the right thing, especially with zero hours contract type folk… more broadly, I hope that the entire Premier League can come to a resolution that puts the safety of people first and preserves the league with integrity.

Outside that, I’m going to grab the popcorn (gloved/no sharing) and see how this plays out.

Stay safe, stay distanced, and come back often… I’ll be here daily with words and sounds. See you in the comments x

Nice piece Pedro.

It’s going to be an absolute nightmare – there’s talk of having a 22 team PL next season but how can you void relegation, dismiss the playoffs and then hand Liverpool the title?

You thoughts on the PL going to Amazon or Apple also go the other way – Sky saying we’ve looked after you in a crises now you owe us.

Fuck knows how this will pan out.

TW

Impact on transfer prices could be immense with lots of good players up for low prices in a fire sale. Clubs with rich owners or strong balance sheets will make hay while mugging those who can’t afford the loss of revenue

WE NEED A PODCAST

Words on a Blog

Karen Brady really is the Queen of Crass.

Up 4 grabs now

Good post pedro,

If you think the money is tied up and clubs are committed, premier league clubs will definitely suffer, but imagine what it’s like for championship clubs, league one and two or the conference clubs.

You could easily see a number of clubs go to the wall.

Still it would be funny seeing the bindippers denied the title.

DivineSherlock

Pedro

Now would be a good time to cover all the staff of Mikel Arteta ,including Steve Round ? I dont know much about his team .

GunnerDNA

They should cancel the season. Liverpool will not report any cases because they want to win the PL.The campaign already started from Phil Thompson and Jamie Carragher. Fcuk Liverpool!

Up 4 grabs now

Dreading all season waiting for that moment the bindippers win the title and we have the next ten years of listening to their fans going on about it.

So cancel it now and deny them., Wenger’s in with UEFA or fifa he can pull a few strings, make it happen Arsene, and you can redeem your self a bit!

Jamie

Great post. What an absolute disaster.

TitsMcGee

It’s actually sad that all the panic-buying morons have most people more afraid of not being able to buy normal necessities than the actual virus itself.

CG

(Fabulous post.) I predicted financial armageddon in the game months ago. I was a lone voice. All clubs have not covered for these types of eventualities. Certainly if our Wenger was still in charge – Arsenal finances would not be as wretched as they are now and we would be in a better shape going forward. Clubs have been overspending for years on average and unsuitable players.( inc. Wenger in his late years) Eg. Pepe and Tienrey in our case. Laughably £100 000 000 there. (That’s a hell of lot of ICU beds alone there) But we are not only… Read more »

Apart from Klopp , I wont feel sorry for absoultely any person associated with Liverpool if the PL got cancelled. As much as I hate to say it hes done a fantastic job there.

TitsMcGee

If the season ends now, anoint Liverpool the champs. They deserve it. There is no way anyone was going to catch them.

It’ll be hard to listen to LFC fans but fair is fair.

Uwot?

“ I think we’re all fairly ok with the idea of handing Liverpool the title”….No way f*** ng Jose! “ not on your life.Im with Brady on this one.Any other potential solutions other than voiding the season are way too complicated & in many cases unjust. In the scousers case this doesn’t apply! Tough.shit happens.I remember the season Arsenal had to play 70 odd matches crammed into days.1980 if memory serves me right .cost us big time.F*** ng ridiculous! But we had to duck it up.included two cup finals 5 days!Didnt hear the meeja luvvies & pundits weeping for us then?

TR7

I think a fair decision will be to wait till last week of April to see if the threat of Corona subsides. If it does not, then the current league table should be considered the final league table. Winners, CL participants, teams to be relegated and promoted should all be decided as if the current league table were the final one.

Bergkamp63

Finish the season when possible (behind closed doors if necessary), take a short break/transfer window of a couple of weeks and commence new season. Do away with cup comps and international friendlies and try to catch up next year ?

The players will effectively have had their summer break now and over the coming week so should not be too fatigued ?

Uwot?

Oh yeah.& those of you promoting handing the mickey mousers the title if the league ceases straight away.might have a rethink.back to 1985 .with their( Liverpool) antics at The Heysel stadium disaster earning all English clubs a five year ban in Europe.Everton though champions couldn’t compete. How ironic if this “ title “ is denied them.im sure Everton won’t be crying.prob dancing in the streets……

I had COVID-19 a week ago, still in hospital cos of being careful but it’s nothing worse than a bad case of flu. Shape up world, I’ve had colds worse. As for Arsenal, it’s a shame,!in case of Arsenal staff, with Arteta, it’s not fatal. Arsenal fan since 68, Arteta fan since never. Great player, cannot pick a team or see out a game. Sack him now

Nelson

If the EPL games can’t be resumed by June, I would suggest the following solution:

– Stop this season completely. The new season starts normally in August.
– The current Champions League games and Europa Cup games will resume next spring.
– This aborted season has no bearing on Champions League nor Europa Cup participation. It will return to normal based on results from next season.
– The league will be increase to 23 teams. No team is demoted. There will be playoff to decide the three teams promoted.

Great.. Kronke got his excuse to spend fuck all

I’m with Brady. Would be hilarious in these dark and uncertain times but … still utterly hilarious

Rich robbins

Pedro, thanks man. We would hope that this opportunity could reenergize the franchise and brand, by leadership covering those workers and costs during this time of crisis. Ownership has a golden opportunity as you’ve said, to really get us all fully back and passionately engaged, by doing the things that use to make the Club so special. Be well

Great post btw Pedro!

Unai

Sorry to offend Un, I’m ill and tetchy but the reality is, it was already too late in January and logistically impossible to shut a global economy down in the timeframe your suggesting.

By the time we realised what was actually going in the virus was already on the rampage.

I don’t have corona btw, winter shits which is frustrating as I’d rather get corona out of the way asap… .

Pedro

At last some common sense.

Too many people on here are suddenly “experts” and adopting “blame game”

People need to be realistic and make personal decisions on how they deal with
situation and more importantly not expose others to virus.

Football should have been closed down two weeks ago in Europe when it became crystal clear what was going on.

At the moment we are now in “self preservation mode” . That is going to be very difficult to administer, because we are all reliant on others for support in
some way.

Micheal

Good post, Pedro. A ray of sensibiity in the darkening gloom.

Keep safe.

Yeah doesn’t seem like it’s going to go away in time for a bunch of millionaires to finish playing out a season does it TR7. The void/22 team for next season seems like a kinda fair outcome tbh. Maybe I dunno. One things for sure it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things whether or not the season finishes or not.

Marko

Also the downplaying of the severity of the virus is what’s gotten us to this stage. Yes by all means don’t let it turn you into a hermit but try to use common sense and be mindful of people who are at risk. Lessen the spread and wait until theres a cure. It’s all we can do. BTW, this panic buying is not insane. It’ll help to stop the virus from spreading. Normally, everybody shops once per day. Now, they may need to shop once every 15 days. People should stay in house as long as possible.

People really need to stop freaking out.

Unai

Un, are you being deliberately obtuse?

Biggest spreader is air travel, the virus lands in one destination in a freshly primed herd of travellers and is perfectly placed to spread to 10-15 other countries once its settled into it’s new home in the departure lounge.

1 person leaves infected and its spread, it really is that simple.

As the virus is highly contagious, all shutting borders does is slow the spread.

Marc

Un Concern is not buying enough food to feed 30 people for 6 months. Concern is not buying up 300 or 400 loo rolls. I’m not saying this isn’t an issue I’m saying some people are massively over reacting – the reason this is dangerous is because it starts a feedback loop that just grows exponentially and becomes self feeding. Mate that’s exactly what I’m talking about.

I’ve made a point of keeping a bit of extra food in the house in case I have to self isolate but I bought a bag of chicken breasts and a couple of tins of soup.

It’s scary what would happen in this country if a genuinely doomsday scenario happened.

Habesha Gooner

At a rate of mortality projected to be 3%, If the whole world consisting of 7.8 billion people were infected it would come around to 234 million people. Even if everyone did their best from now on and reduced the mortality rate by half It would still come to over a 100 million people That would lose their lives. It’s hypothetical but still an Insane number if everyone got infected.

My sisters mate had it and was over it I’m 48 hours said it felt like a minor cold

I love people who have stories like this as if to downplay what’s going on. It’s great that that person thought it felt like a minor cold unfortunately he could spread it to someone where that minor cold feels like drowning or worse. But anyway. I’m not all for the mass hysteria either but is it hard for people to be sensible and conscientious in this day and age? Yes because most people are stupid and ignorant.

Marc

Habesha

It’s not quite that straight forward though – it’s reckoned that the mortality rate amongst the general population is less than 1%, amongst young children it’s zero so far (and this is the most important number so I hope for everyone that remains the case) but among the elderly especially those with pre existing conditions it’s far higher.

Therefore globally in a worst case scenario countries where the age demographic is weighted to higher number of old people would see far more deaths – countries with younger populations will see less.

Marc

Marko

I’m not sure it’s an intelligence thing we just seem to live in an age where people enjoy playing the victim for attention.

No worries – we’ve talked all sorts on here before from football to music to films and have normally got on pretty well.

So I think apologies all round – no offence meant or taken.

Clean slate.

OK I’ll play so what’s the actual death count in China?

If the season is over, to be confirmed obviously, does Arteta then make it clear who’s staying and who’s going? No need to ‘fatten up’ certain players who’ll be taken to market.
Does pre-season start as soon as it’s announced that the season is over? I’d like to think that it’ll suit Arteta to get the players drilled into his way of playing. Odd for the players not to have games though.

With no Euros, players are going to get a proper rest.

Will the TW stay the same?

If it’s possible for there to be a good time to get injured, Torreira’s probably nailed it!

There’s a load of questions we can’t answer and a load of question we haven’t considered yet.

What if the league kick off is put back next season when you have a player like Auba on a year left come June?

It’s going to be near carnage. Pedro’s covered some of the implications for us re revenue – the Spud’s have a shiny new billion pound toilet seat to pay for!

Factoid
Seasonal flu in the uk last year killed about 1000 people per week during the winter and that’s with 72% of older people being vaccinated.
The journalist want to for some reason keep the fear going to sell news items.
It’s crazy, and the snowflakes in government are buying it

To make a difference to the Chinese population you’d have to kill of hundreds of millions – if the virus was that deadly it’d wipe out a third or more of the worlds population.

Don’t be a cunt seems a reasonable comment.

The league uncompleted is open for law suits If it ain’t finished.
